Dear Editor,
A dismissed soldier, Emmanuel Ojo-Giwa, is appealing to President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene and order his reinstatement into the Nigerian Army after five years.
Emmanuel Ojo-Giwa |
Mr. Ojo-Giwa, who was serving at the Ordinance Headquarters, Abati Barracks, Ojuelegba, Lagos, was dismissed from the Nigerian Army on January 28, 2010 for allegedly using the battery of a generating set in a retired General’s
residence located at NO 19, Ikoyi Crescent to start his vehicle which broke down.
He was one of the few soldiers manning the gate of the residence of Y.M Yaduma, a retired Major General, before he was summarily dismissed from service.
He was subsequently punished by the authority of the Nigerian Army which later set up a board of inquiry to look into the matter.
Before the panel of inquiry started its sitting, Mr. Ojo-Giwa, who was about to be promoted to the rank of corporal, was denied the promotion as part of the punishment for the offence he committed.
He was later dismissed from the Nigerian Army.
While speaking with journalists in Lagos, Mr. Ojo- Giwa begged President Buhari to save his soul from hunger, saying he had been begging for assistance from people in order to survive.
He said his wife, Efe, divorced him a year after his ordeal began, adding, “Life has not been okay for me since I was dismissed from service. I have been going to meet my brothers and sisters to help with my daily needs; They are tired of helping me further.
“Please, help me beg President Buhari to render assistance for me to go back to me duty post. I wrote a letter to President Goodluck Jonathan but to no avail.”
Mr. Ojo- Giwa had tried to get redress through the court but has been unsuccessful.
He, through his lawyer, Yemi Adetoyinbo, on April 25, 2012, approached the court to seek redress over his client’s unceremonious dismissal.
Mr. Adetoyinbo prayed the court to reinstate his client, saying his dismissal did not follow due process.
The court, after the hearing form both parties, summoned the Nigerian army, then under the leadership of Azubuike Ihejerika, to appear before it over the matter.
Justice Stella Okeke, who later retired before the case was handed over to Justice Momoh Sanni.
But Justice Sanni later dismissed the case for ‘lack of merit’.

No you are not wrong. Sacking him was just an abuse of position. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. What is inside a car battery? Granted, he should have asked for permission before using his superior's item but an outright sack is too much. And d wife divorced him immediately?! Na wa for marriages these days. What happened to for better for worse?
ReplyDeleteHope she won't carry her two left legs and crawl back if he gets reinstated oh?
Why wont she come back? That baba twins that ran away nko when Ambode intervained into the matter did he not use his two left legs to come back? Poverty is a loner oooooo.
DeleteWhat he did was a crime! But sacking him was way toomuch a punishment.
ReplyDeleteHe was punished and his promotion was denied him. That's good. Why sack him?
ReplyDeleteThis is a clear case of injustices. I pray his plead will be attended to.

Sacking him was too much except there's more to this that he hasn't mentioned.
ReplyDeleteSoldiers have a code of conduct different from the rest of the citizenry , he must have flouted one of the big ones. Their ogas are revered so what he did must be seen as gross.
ReplyDeleteYes@Anony.
DeleteWhat civilians see as nothing is a big crime in the military.
For instance, plugging your phones on the systems to charge is just a normal thing, but in an organisation,it can earn one a query or sack.
Whatever ! Dat Maj.Gen. Yadamu or what? Is he a saint? Ordinary battery for God's sake. If dz guy is guilty as charged he wouldn't b here begging 4 help. Dz Generals and their intolerance. Giwa I think it's better Yu go to Femi Falana, he ll assist you, meanwhile hand everything to God. Hakuna Matata!
ReplyDeleteBut this is unfair
ReplyDeleteEeya, they should forgive him oo before he will behave like the sacked journalist that killed the cameraman n the reporter Fr US
ReplyDeleteI pity d poor man
ReplyDeleteRules are rules. You break the rules you get sacked, end of story. Stop begging and go and look for another job. We have to put a stop to begging, self pity and playing the victim in Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteWetin I wan talk dey my bele! I dey vex for oppressors calling themselves big men!
ReplyDeleteI don't pity u at all. All this poor people always like doing the wrong thing. Poverty has a way of affecting reasoning. Lol. Oga bubu pls look into the Matter. Just common battery. Haba.

ReplyDeleteArmy and their rules. Dey r too strict jor
ReplyDeleteIt's called gross insubordination! Y should d soldier have the effontery to that? He knows the rules, Pls he should stop playing victim here! Make he berra go look for another work. Anyways I trust Buhari sha, he won't listen!
ReplyDeleteGross indiscipline... before u know it he will drive ogas car or sleep on ogas bed.. he should learn from this. Even Buhari might have done worse to him in his time. He has to look for another job though I pray they have mercy and reinstate him.
