A 13-year-old primary school pupil has been confirmed dead, while 20 others are battling for life in different hospitals in Enugu-Ezike in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, after eating at a traditional marriage ceremony last weekend.
Trouble started after the traditional marriage of Obiageli (surname witheld) when her in-laws departed to their hometown, Nrobo in Nsukka Council area. About 30 people, who ate the soup prepared for the entertainment of guests, were said to have started complaining of serious stomach upset.
Things got worse around 3 am, when many guests began stooling and vomiting blood, causing pandemonium among the villagers.
The girl, who was at the wedding, reportedly gave up the ghost before medical assistance could be sought, while others were rushed to different hospitals in Aji and Ogrute communities.
Narrating to Daily Sun Newspaper, one of the in-laws to the family of the newly married woman, Emmanuel Odo nwa Urama a.k.a Ite ego, stated that contrary to the earlier report that six people died after taking pork served in the home of the celebrant, only one person has been confirmed dead. He stated that he also ate the pork without any sign of trouble.
Odo, however, stated that three of his children who ate the soup were affected, adding that there was strong suspicion that the soup was poisoned.
He confirmed that the bride, Obiageli, returned from her husband’s home the next morning with swollen legs and other complications, but her situation was being handled with traditional and orthodox medicines.
According to him, the bride’s family has vowed to get to the root of the matter by any possible means so as to ascertain what actually happened.
Other victims who were said to be recovering in the hospital included uncle of the newly married girl, Anthony, his wife, Ijeoma and children.

ReplyDeleteVomiting blood?
ReplyDeleteThis story reminds me of a family who ate meat which had tiny drops of Sniper pesticide on it (the sniper spilled on the nylon used to wrap the meat). They vomitted & stooled blood till they were rushed to the hospital where. It was at the hospital doctors told them the cause & the lady who wrapped the meat confirmed she sprinkled Sniper prior to the time she wrapped the meat & said there's a possibility that a little must have dropped on the nylon.
Thank God they survived.
The poisioning could either be a mistake or deliberate. People cooking for a large number of people need to be very careful whilst handling food to avoid the former.
Eh ehn

Nigerians and witchcraft mentality, it is a likely case of food poisoning, not poisoned food. I believe if it was deliberately poisoned, a lot more people would be dead. For people to be hospitalized, its likely a listeria or another microorganism from the pork. With the way meat is sold in Nigeria, all in the open, with green head flies from waste to food products, am surprised we don't have more cases reported. Im sure there are though, we just have a very weak public health system and very lazy journalism. if not for blogs we wont know half the things that happen everyday in that country
ReplyDeleteThe first thing that came to my mind was Aflatoxin poisoning. It's a kind of mycotoxin (fungal toxin) produced by a fungus that grows mostly on peanuts and grains; you know Igbos consume a lot of peanut butter along with kolanuts and garden eggs at traditional wedding ceremonies.
ReplyDeleteSome of the symptoms include abdominal pain, vomiting, stooling, haemorrhaging (bleeding), convulsion, oedema (swollen bodies), coma and death.
Be careful about what you consume, especially at ceremonies, as some of these toxins are not easily destroyed by heat.
