Nigeria's Transport System:Which Way Forward?.

This mail came in yesterday and addresses perhaps something that has been overlooked for far too long.
These transport companies have no checks and balances and thus put dead cars and buses on the road, thus most times leading to fatal crashes.
The sender of this mail is so on point.
I hope President Bubu will put someone in place to check this,I really hope so!

''Dear Stella,
It is with anger and annoyance that I am sending this to you. I want to share some nasty experiences that I have had with transporters in Nigeria.

Precisely on the 14th of August this year,I left my house in kuje Abuja for ABC transport motor park in Utako to board a bus going to Ibadan.I got to the park by 7:35 am and went to the ticketing counter only to be told that there was no bus available, but the lady at the counter told me 'I will get you a space if you buy meat pie for me'.

She was asking for a tip.

Out of anger and fear of not getting a bus,I gave her 200 and pronto!I got a ticket.I paid 6000 naira. The journey was good and driver kept to speed limit and I arrived Ibadan around 4:30pm.

After the event I went for,on the 19th of August, I got to Cross country park close to Mobil fuel station and paid for a bus going to Abuja 5500 naira and the bus to transport us did not come till around 10:20 am.When it came,it was dirty, raggedy and I was skeptical about the journey at the mere sight of the bus yet I entered.

We loaded and the journey commenced but I must say that the driver refused to put on the AC and it was extremely uncomfortable. I had to ask the driver to put on the AC and he replied 'this bus no good,if AC dey on the bus no go run'.

At that point I called their customer service and reported the case and the driver who obviously heard my conversation promptly told passengers to close their windows and AC was put on.The bus continued slowly and we didn't get to lokoja till 6:05pm .The driver stopped just on the road in front of an open place and asked us to get down,go and pee and journey will continue. I protested and insisted that he stopped us at a more decent place as is the custom and threatened to call his office he grudgingly obliged and stopped at a decent eatery.

I got to giri  junction by 8:07pm after series of abuses by the driver.

This morning,my sister in-law and her young son who have been at my place for the holidays went to Peace park at kuje and boarded a bus going to Enugu .They left around 8:36 am and as I type 5:45pm they are still at 9th mile because the bus according to her was faulty and couldn't move well.

Now to the crux of the matter, why do transport company's deploy buses that are not road worthy on such distances? Is there any way we can seek redress when we are shortchanged?I feel so bad because this incidents keep happening and no one has been sanctioned .

I hope if this makes it to your blog, someone somewhere might just take action.

Ibiam Aderonke.

    1. I've done only one night journey and it was from abuja to lag. I didn't regret it.

I hardly travel but when I want to I go with GIG and I've not had any bad experience.

Most of my long distance trips are always planned so I go by air.

Travelled once to ghana by road with ABC, I really enjoyed my trip.

After all said, our transport system in this country is very bad.

June 2015 I was on my way to abj 4rm owerri na after Auchi the drive noticed a Lil fault bt couldn't pack coz it was a bushy area nd immediately we got to where houses r,he packed ndd every1 came dwn nd in d process of checking it the tyre exploded nd fire started coming out, fire extinguisher was usedd on it nd villagers had 2 bring water too. We were there 4rm 12-3pm nai I vex enta anoda motor to abj coz sending a bus 4rm lokoja to the place na anoda journey bt I commended the driver for stopping coz I knw dt if it was anoda smaller commercial bus,the driver wil say let's manage til we get to abj. ABC services r okay nd I tried chisco bt one tin I noticed is dt the jst allow passengers to enta without searching or using bomb detector on them which is very risky 4 those travelling with lux buses.

  9. With what u have said, it's obvious that the transport company are only bothered about the money not their service or how their bus is!!! Someone needs to be put in to sanction such that's if there are not taking bribe though!

  15. Some thing happened to me on my way from Edo state on the 2nd of Aug.2015. I got to ekpoma at exactly 7am but I could not get GOD is Good motor, said they have left and bcos of my precious food items I decided to join de mordem bus frm ekpoma, after much waiting we finally left at about 10am. Immediately we got to after Benin a little the driver packed to buy fuel he initially bought from ekpoma, I knew something was wrong, he later announced that the bus was faulty and we needed to go back to b Benin saying they needed to fix it. After much protest they finally gave us another bus at about 2:50pm. We got to Lagos at about 8pm and I got home 10pm..it was a horrific journey. Nva in my life will I use that bus again.

  16. They are lucky they left 8: 36 am, most times if am leaving kuje for Enugu we leave say 9:30 or 10 then get to Enugu by 6, it terrible. Peace in particular have new buses but they're in utako they use those dead ones in places like kuje, gwas, and sometimes nyanya/ maraba. You see, so since then if I want to travel I will leave for kuje for utako.

  19. See me that was contemplating going by bus to Abuja on my next trip after the horror of my last flight from Abuja.
Now you've put me in a dilemma.

The one paining me now is the tankers and trailers that we struggle with on Lagos Road everyday.
Please whoever is in charge of these roads, kindly limit these tankers and trailers to driving at night between 11pm and 5am. Enough of all these unnecessary death.
