FG Freezes Jonathan’s Associates’ Accounts

The anti-corruption campaign of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration appears to have taken a bigger bite as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has secretly frozen the bank accounts of former President Goodluck Jonathan’s associates.

According to punch the move by the anti-graft agency was aimed at scuttling the transfer of the alleged looted funds from the accounts for other reasons.

A member of a key transition committee of the All Progressives Congress, who spoke to one of our correspondents on condition of anonymity, on Friday, said the need had become necessary in view of the magnitude of the alleged theft of public resources by the affected persons.

The APC chieftain spoke on the heels of the condemnation of President Buhari’s ongoing probe of the last administration of the Peoples Democratic Party and recovery of funds looted by public officials.

The affected accounts belonged to....

- Keketobou Foundation, owned by former Special Adviser to Jonathan on Niger Delta and Coordinator of the Amnesty Programme, Mr. Kingsley Kuku.

- Mieka Divers Limited as well as Global West Vessels Limited reportedly owned by ex-Niger Delta warlord, Mr. Government Ekpompolo, aka Tompolo.

Further investigations also showed that one of Jonathan’s close allies, Mr. Kime Engozi’s accounts had also been flagged.
Engozi is the contractor handling the N30bn Maritime University contract at Okerenkoko in the Gbaramatu area of Delta State.

Besides, funds already approved for the commencement of the university are said to have remained frozen in a Yenagoa branch of the United Bank for Africa Plc.
The NIMASA Technical College at Okoloba, also in Delta State, is also said to be facing an uncertain future as there are fears that the institution might be scrapped.

Accounts linked to the former Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Patrick Akpobolokemi, are also said to have been frozen by the EFCC.
The source, who is now in the Presidency, said although he could not confirm if Jonathan’s recent meeting with Buhari discussed the issue, the action to ‘flag’ the said accounts might have been for security reasons.

The source also said the opposition Peoples Democratic Party was ignorant of the workings of the Federal Government, especially on security.
The source added, “This is not a matter of lobby or any politics that should be shoved aside; what is at stake is the nation’s security and nothing more.
“When the PDP says the current anti-corruption drive is selective, we continue to laugh at them because they do not seem to know what is at stake at all. If only they know, all the noise they have been making won’t be made at all.

“How many of these PDP elements know that just one individual benefitted from a single NIMASA transaction to the tune of N13bn, not to talk of about $57m he was said to have benefitted from controversial contract deals?

“Are these the things they ask us to sweep under the carpet? Certainly, we cannot because apart from the angle of the impunity and financial recklessness, does it make any sense if any responsible government allows such individuals, who had threatened war in the event that Jonathan did not win to have such huge sums in bank vaults? Such accounts must be flagged, of course.”

However, the PDP has asked President Buhari to follow the rule of law in his government’s determination to fight corruption.
The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Mr. Olisa Metuh, in an interview with punch on Saturday night, asked the President not to spare anyone, including his friends and members of the ruling APC in the crusade.

Tompolo is not under any investigations by the EFCC, but Kuku has a date to keep with the anti-graft agency in September, having gone for a knee surgery in the United States of America in July, while the former NIMASA boss has been under investigation for over month.

However, Akpobolokemi’s interaction with the EFCC has been linked to business deals by him while he held sway at NIMASA and the ex-warlord.
Sunday Punch also learnt that EFCC’s seizure of Akpobolokemi’s international passport and a N38m worth bullet-proof Toyota Landcruiser was already heightening speculations that he might be prosecuted if findings by the investigators indict him.

At least three close aides and confidants of the ex-NIMASA boss, including the current Executive Director in charge of Maritime Safety and Shipping Development, Mr. Ezekiel Bala Agaba, have been guests of the EFCC in the last ten days.

Why is the focus only in the South South. It's only Jonathan I blame...even aboki illiterate go carry us do yeye. This too shall pass. He should declare State of emergency already.

Everyday a greater scam is uncovered. Yesterday I heard frona reliable person that the sum of 1.7 billion naira cash was discovered in a house somewhere in Apo. Why this hasnt made the headlines is beyond me.
The best time to buy properties in Abj is now; people are desperately trying to sell off their ill acquired properties especially that in their names.
I cant wait for EFCC to move in on Riverpark Estate and when they do I did like to see the face of Madam Peace. We finally got hope.

    1. Before commenting you need to know how efcc operates... They don't wait for you to be tried before freezing your account. Once your name is brought to them for any complaint, first thing they do is obtain warrants and go to the bank and ask them to freeze your account while investigation is on going.. I know this because I know those who it affected and they were normal business men having issues and trying to resolve things not politicians...

Am beginning to think that after their meetings, someone has the responsibility of tipping off the press. It happens all over the world.

I pray the universities in question are completed by this government. Please do not keep that project hanging. Delta could use an additional university.

In other news,Guatelamelan President Pèrez is cooling his heels in a Prison.

  14. 13Billion and $57M no wonder Tomoplo and co were acting like lords in the Niger delta. Just imagine how many youths such figure will change their lives. That amount will create at least 100,000 entrepreneurs, 2790entrepreneurs from each state of the federation. With such human investment in the system, in the next 10years Nigeria will become Japan/Germany of Africa through manufacturing. But of-course the past government of Goodluck Jonathan failed to do anything productive with our money. He preferred to waste our fund with people who committed crimes against humanity (Killing & kidnapping),people who deserve to be in jail.
I think, its time PMB government start building new jail house or renovate the old prisons before they inaugurate special court for them. Am tired of reading stolen billions in £$€ daily not even millions in naira. After reading all this evidence, we still have some call Jonathan their hero? May God never let you have hero/hero's that will loot your destinies away again in your lives.
Even the poor/broke ass/ jobless once among us are asking why accounts are frozen, witch hunting bla bla. Why won't accounts be frozen? Is normal during investigation of crime in every sane society.
Accounts were frozen because investigation so far prove they were looted fund through over inflated contracts and funds diversion. Accounts were flagged to avoid withdrawal or diversion of fund before the authorities starts prosecution. Someone with $57million who has no company 7 years ago that employed 5workers or 10million naira in their company's account now have millions of dollars in their accounts and you guys still call it with witchhunting? Please borrow some brain. What most of you that comment here daily should release is that the crime of these few have one way or the other affected you and me. No sane government will see all thats happening and close their eyes. If PMB fail us, next government will surely investigate his government so its not about PDP/individuals/tribe is all about doing the right thing. Former government had the opportunity to investigate Yar Adua men and families but they failed to do so, billions stolen by them can't be traced after 7years because money has exchanged hands severally in the past years.
Nigerians of all tribes support the current government, if you are not happy with the government, i advise you to join Syria refugees in Europe. You will surely be granted asylum is a good opportunity. You can return back after PMB government leave office, the politicians some of you support are doing so why not you.

Jona government truly dealt with Nigeria if it wasn't rescued by PMB, Nigeria will be Somalia by now. America saw the amount of impunity and fraud in the system, that's the reason they were in support of our change in leadership.

    1. Can you shut your throat and not attribute every opposition or criticism of the Buhari administration to the Igbo people? Must we generalise? I don't owe you an explanation but I am a staunch supporter of Buhari. I have been since he started contesting years back and I'm Igbo. Anything done under the rule of law is fine by me even if it affects those close to me. The long and short of it is that you should get over your hatred or is it stereotyping?

To the blog visitors listed above, my response is specifically to you as I concur with your school of thought on the issue of corruption in Nigeria and your line of arguments so far.

Fellow BVs we must not forget that Nigerians have been abused and brutalised by incompetent and fraudulent leaders and the country itself raped of its resources for so long. Consequently. it is more than likely that most Nigerians have developed the "stockholm Syndrome"-Stockholm syndrome, or capture-bonding, is a psychological phenomenon in which hostages express empathy and sympathy and have positive feelings toward their captors, sometimes to the point of defending and identifying with the captors. .

As explained above, they have become so used to not having any basic human rights and basic necessities of life that any attempt to change the status quo is immediately viewed with suspicion along the line of ethnic witch hunt.

On this blog alone, how many times have we read about people working without getting paid for months on end, people unable to access good medical care, graduates of several years still seeking employment, people trading sexual favours for basic things such as school fees, rent, etc, parents that are unable to fend for their children, pastors financially and sexually exploiting their congregation, children being molested, extra judicial killings by our armed forces that are meant to protect the masses, accident victims dying because of lack of emergency health care services, politicians travelling abroad for treatment despite claiming to build world class hospitals, politicians who patronise health care services and educational facilities in the West because they don't have faith in the non-existent infrastructures in Nigeria.

Well said Anon 09.42 poverty of the mind indeed.
