Buhari To Start Giving Primary School Pupils Free Meals

Vice-President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on Tuesday said the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration would soon commence giving primary school children free meals.

Osinbajo said the free feeding scheme was a core project of the Federal Government that would in turn yield about 1.14 million jobs and increase in food production.

Osinbajo said this at the 45th Annual Accountants Conference in Abuja.

He said the government would be investing more in the people, education and job creation.

Speaking on the topic “Repositioning Nigeria for Sustainable Development: From Rhetoric to Performance,” Osinbajo said that the multiplier effects of the introduction of the school feeding scheme would help to create 1.14 million new jobs; increase food production by up to 530,000 metric tonnes per annum, as well as attract fresh investments up to N980bn.

The Vice President said, “One of the most important interventions required in the education sector is capacity building to improve teacher quality.

“This programme is intended to drive teachers’ capacity development; boost basic education; attract talents to the teaching profession. Better educated population increases economic potential for productivity.”

“The All Progressives Congress has made a commitment to provide one-meal-a-day for all primary school students; that would create jobs in agriculture, including poultry, catering and delivery services.”

Nice initiative but i wonder for how long.
I hope there will not be a press release denying that this was part of Buhari's campaign speech.

    1. That will be good because there are lots of kids in rural areas, very timid villages that'll start going to school if they're offered free food in school, because feeding at home is luxury for this kids.
But it's not going to be easy for the government.

How healthy and hygienic would this food be? That's my own concern. But I'm happy they've agreed to start. even if they serve akpu, the next person would make it rice and the next rice and salad. And that's how improvement would come gradually.

  2. Free meal.....what about improving the quality of education and employing reasonable teachers especially in schools all around the rural parts of this country. It wouldn't make sense if pupils get to have free meals for 6yrs and come out as dullards. Na Rochas go don suggest this thing.

  21. It's not the food that is the problem..
The question is, will they be given healthy meals as in balance diet?
I trust my Nigerian people, the government may provide ten tin tomatoes and they will use just four to cook and take the remaining six home for their own selfish gain..

  22. This free food IMO is not necessary, cos hungry no dey kill person!but dat notwithstanding, this regime is trying to show u all dat we have enuf money to go round urgent issues and still handle miscellaneous like this!
....watch this space, its d beginning of our good work for a great nigeria!
    Sai Baba...

  23. I was there @ the ICAN coference when the VP reiterated that promise. He said plans have been concluded and will commence soon. 1 balanced meal (lunch) with fruits to public school children only. I pay N30k for lunch per term per child. That money is more than some people can afford as school fees sef. Do you know how many children don't have even 1 balanced meal a day? This will mean the world to them and their parents. It will also encourage parents to send their kids to school.

In the same vein he talked about training & re-training the teachers as well as improving the standard of education in those schools. To borrow the words of Temisan Okomi, one can walk & chew gum at the same time. So both projects will be implemented.

By now we should know that Buhari & Osinbajo are not clueless. They don't just dabble blindly into projects without having done their homework. These are projects and every project must go through the planning phase before implementation.

God bless Nigeria. i believe things will get better.
