Banks Around The World Begin Closing Accounts Of Nigerians.

WTF!!!

BellaNaija reports that banks around the world have began closing accounts held by Nigerians.
If you may recall, in May 2015, news filtered through social media that accounts of Nigerians in the UAE specifically in Dubai had been closed.

At the time, no official reason was given, however sources at the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) disclosed that this was as a result of Dubai’s efforts to curb money laundering.

A growing Nigerians with accounts in the United Kingdom, United States and Canada have reported their accounts being closed without any clear explanation from the banks. Many have received letters stating that the banks have decided to close their accounts as they reserve the right to do so based on bank/client agreements. Letter packages have included cheques amounting to the closing balance and/or instructions on how to retrieve their cash.
While there is no clear and official reason for this exercise, sources have revealed that this is as a result of ongoing anti-money laundering discussions between the Nigeria’s Buhari-led government and their international counterparts.

In addition, countries around the world are clamping down on banks which aid money laundering by imposing huge fines and penalties. Therefore, the banks are working overtime to “clean up their acts”. In June 2015, it was revealed that HSBC paid over $43million in Geneva to settle a money laundering case.
Please note that based on information received so far, while no clear pattern for account closing selection has been revealed; Affected parties have excluded those who have a clear and defined source of the funds in the account.

For example, work permit holders with salaries remitted into their accounts or  current students with fees and reasonable pocket money paid into their accounts have not been affected so far.

However, Nigerians who transfer money from their Nigerian accounts to foreign accounts, students with unexplained large balances and Nigerians who made cash deposits into their accounts abroad have been affected so far.

If you have a foreign account, you are encouraged you to check the status as soon as possible and continue to monitor your accounts as this is an ongoing exercise.

    1. In developed countries if they see large amounts in ur account dts strange or they NEVER TAXED from ur income, its a problem. They cant trace d source of ur wealth - in their minds ur either a thief, money launderer or a tax evader. Theyll start investigating you. Its d fastest way to catch criminals & has bn happenin for decades, maybe it just started in dubai.

And then u now say u made d money in another country. Wahala. Pple dont realize tinubus problem wt d US authourities was a tax evasion problem. Not a drug one. When they couldnt link him to any crime, they asked him to turn in d money to them so they cld acquit him of tax evasion. I dont know how pple think d govt collects money in exchange for dropping drug charges. Uncle sam must get paid. No be joke. Pay up or be imprisoned.
When i was an undergrad student in d UK my dad sent a large amnt of money into my account wt HSBC cos we were preparing for a wedding. The bank called me immediately cos they never saw dt kinda amount in my account since it was opened. And they knew i was an intl student cos i opened d acct wt a student visa. Im sure d naija passport didnt help. After i explained, they actually called my skool to confirm d source of my tuition payments, spoke to my dads banker in d US and his fellowship board who confirmed he was a doctor b4 they even called my dad advising him on d best way to transfer money across hsbc - in order to reduce transfer charges. Yimu.

But all these are insignificant in stopping d major thieves. Theres a reason pple store their billions in swiss banks.

    2. Bisola you are very correct. Even when u go to a car lot and u want to pay cash down, you'lld be scrutinized to your knickers. Say a car is as low as £20,000 and u wanna pay cash, be rest assured that you'lld be visited the next day by the police, that is if they don't reach u before u leave the dealers place. This is in saner climes where there's accountability... not in Nigeria where they carry monies in huge "Ghana must go" bags with so much impunity and without anyone batting an eye lid. No questions asked because everyone wants to have a cut of whatever the transaction you are doing. Some would even remind you its a crime to carry too much cash, but are willing to shush if u give them something. So the cycle continues. Thank God sanity is resuming our corrupt systems.

  20. It's a good news, it can only happen to those who could not defend their source of income. Closing of accounts was happening in the UK during last election, a friend who work with private investigating firm told me about it. He even yabbed me as our people as being wicked with all the poverty in the land, people steal millions of ££ daily that are being closed with banks.
When those accounts are closed, the owners don't even go back to the banks to claim or ask questions, some even stop visiting the countries to avoid being arrested and prosecuted. If the Arab countries and western world stop encouraging their looting none will siphon our money offshore. All they could do is invest their loot in our country afterwards, we collect it back from them through the judicial system.
We really need to have a good judicial system that work, a lot of things need to change in our messed up country and last administration made things even worst.

    3. That is ehn, but the non acceptance/transaction of/with dollars affected a lot of people o. Especially the holiday makers during the summer. I was affected too...greatly so.. as we had to find means of exchanging money here and there at all cost. The mallams became 'god of the rings" in their black market. Even using your card abroad would be stopped after a few transactions. Not unusual though, but with little or no cash in hand it was a nightmare. I know the number of people that suffered to get money across to pay for their kids' school fees abroad.. it wasn't easy this time. People were embarrassed at the airport etc. But I guess it's for the betterment of the entire nation. So make we manage the inconveniences for now.

  38. Why 'ld d European country's nd America banks in d 1st place receive dis money on behalf of dia Nigerian clients without proper check of d source of dis monies / funds. It luks lyk a thief stealing smetin nd giving u 2 kip 4 him nd afta holding in trust 4 him 4 yrs u re nw turning around 2 raise suspicion. All d monies dat Abacha nd his cronies stole nd stached in dia country re dey saying dey were nt aware all along dat dose monies were laundered monies?. Let dem continue 2 fool demselves. I only blame our leaders nd politicians who launderl monies dat re suppose 2 b used 2 develop Nigeria 2 dese European countries who dnt value dem nd who use dis monies 2 develop dia countries. Sista SDK close ur eyes nd imagine if sy 3/4 of d total country monies dat were laundered abroad is in Nigeria banks. Imagine d amount of credit facilities dat 'll b available 2 d Nigerians mass who 'll b niding funds 2 set up dia own business. May God hlp our beloved country called Nigeria nd heart d heart of our politicians.

    1. Interesting enough, it's not as if the Europeans or the Americans are totally devoid of corruption themselves. They love money as much as these people we discuss here, just that it's not as much. They love foreigners to bring monies to invest in their countries. They solicit for investors and look the other way even if the source of their money is questionable, they don't wanna know.

This is only happening NOW because of the corruption mantra Buhari keeps emphasizing as he meets with their leaders. We the Nigerian people especially, have helped boost their economy in time past, either tru looted funds or otherwise. For ex, Look at how much monies was recovered from Abacha's foreign account, what happened to the interest it accrued over the years?? They didn't declare that one o.

It's been so from time immemorial for Nigerians to own the very best of properties in the UK especially. Little wonder some of our folks have houses that have been fully paid for and not on mortgage. I'm talking the days of the 70s to 80s when it was visa free for Nigerians to travel to the UK. Quite frankly though, most of those who acquired properties then were mostly those who used their hard earned monies. Whilst the rest were military dictators. Just that things have changed.
