Baby Food Suggestions.

Would you wanna share you baby food recipe on this blog with other Mothers?

I remember when i was through with weaning my first child,I was lost as to what to start feeding him and it was a really difficult time for me.

What age is your child and what are you feeding him/her?

google image

How do you balance a little babys meal to make sure it contains the needed vitamins?

This blog visitor has this to say...

''My 6month old baby prefers only breast milk and adult food. But I don't want to stuff her tender tummy with the  usual adult food available to us here in Nigeria, please mothers in the house and Nutritionists alike, what are the possible food suggestions for my baby's age?

Also, at what age should I start giving her smoothie or fruits?

As I find solution to these questions on this blog, may you  all find solution to all your questions this month of September in Jesus name. Amen. Happy new month''.

    4. Yay when weaning, u can introduce pap, to make it very healthy, I boil biscuit bone very well and use the water to make the pap, thirst really nice, u can add soya milk or baby milk to it. U can also try unripe banana porridge, in calabar we call it oto mboro. Grate the unripe banana, use ur biscuit bone water, when the water starts boiling cut little pieces of the grated banana into the water until and boil until it solidifies, add crayfish and a pinch of salt with palm oil. Babies love dis meal.

    5. Had my 12 weeks scan today, baby doing ok. So happy. It's been a very long journey to this point but I pray that it becomes easy from now on.
From miscarriage to finding out I had large fibroids and a big ovarian cyst during this pregnancy to having severe pain and ringing the ambulance last week, was admitted in hospital, they cld only give me paracetamol and codeine, had to bear the rest of the pain.
Anyways, am grateful to God and to my hubby who has been in charge of the whole house and kitchen since the last 2 months, cooking breakfast, lunch, dinner n whatever I fancy. Making amala, soups, porridge etc and cleaning up my vomit with so much energy. He even had to take time off work . God bless him so much.
And thanks to the SDK family, the posts n comments av kept alive all these while . Hoping to go back to work next week.
I pray all those seeking a child will be answered speedily this month IJN and I wish us all an event-free pregnancy. Can't wait to meet my baby!

    6. Pls wait until he is 6months before introducing solid. The baby knows his/her right that's the reason for the protest.lol

    7. For 6mnths babies you can use the normal everyday food in the market. U can give indomie without the spice in it. U take a little portion boil very soft add crayfish and a drop of palm oil. The reason palm oil is recommended in their meals from 6months is cos it's rich in vitamin A which babies need. Note that onions and seasoning cubes are not used till they are about 1. You can also give potato with butter mashed with egg York. Also boiled rice boil till soft, put in a blender blend then add back in the pot, add little salt crayfish and palm oil cook till very soft off and feed baby. Also eba or semovita with okro soup is good also. In making the soup use fresh mackerel fillet it and mash or leave like that use lots of crayfish to make the soup. Also u can give beans but for kids that young you have to wash it as if u are making moi moi, put in a pot add crayfish and oil cook till u can mash it, then switch off and serve. But all meals should be made in small portions. If your child takes pap, then you can make that and add blended crayfish or soya beans with it. For the pap the way I made mine then, was to make it the normal way then still pour it inside the pot and cook it. Before I pour it in the flask. My son did not like the crayfish in his pap so I used blended groundnut and soya beans. Just buy groundnut from the market, get the guys to wash the blender well and grind it. Take it home and put in a jar, use any time needed.
A beg I don tire, I did these stuff over 6yrs ago, but believe me I weaned with natural everyday stuff. Good luck. Just be creative in feeding kids. Then u can give freshly squeezed juice but dilute with water oh, cos of its acidic nature. Or and before I forget u can give pureed apple. Just get a clean greater and great d apple to get the puree. You can feed your baby any food @ all, just make sure it's very soft and we'll cooked.

    8. I don't have a baby yet but I have more experience in baby food. At six months, apart from breast milk you can give you baby maize or millet pap mixed with soya bean milk and can be sweeten with honey or glucose. Also if you are bouyant enough, you can get gerber rice or gerber cereal and mixed with baby formuler. Nutribom cereal is also a good cereal for your baby at six months mixed with baby formuler/milk. There are many good baby cereal in the market you can give to your baby together with pap. Hope this helps.

    9. How can you feed a 6 months old baby eba and okro?

      Delete
    10. Lol, my 6 month old loves soup. Just bring it in front of her, she will salivate. She licks all soups! I give very little eba for now.

Watch your child and give what he/she wants. They are all different.

    11. @onomebonny nice 1, you have done justice to this query but the eba I feel is a NO NO for that age, cos it's heavy and way too starchy.

@viva please honey is not to be given to babies until they are 1. This is because honey can, very occasionally, contain a spore of a bacterium called clostridium botulinum. This can cause a rare form of food poisoning (botulism) in babies.

    12. I also face difficulties when I wanted to introduce solid to my baby at 6months,i started with friso gold and frisolac am she was falling sick and vomiting until I went to see a paediatrician who said my baby is saying she doesn't like what am giving her, so he asked me to prepare assorted pap ie jero , dawa , millet, groundnut and soya bean. Humm dat was d magic ooooo she loved it. And she has added weight. I also give her nan2,and cerelac, humm mm she is almost a year old now, she loves amala and ewedu soup mixed wit crayfish.

  2. I feed my 10 mth old baby Pap mixed with milo, milk and soya bean, she wasn't taking the soya bean alone with the pap so I added milo to sweeten it and that's her best food,i also give her golden morn, and then potato porridge which can be made with Irish or sweet potato, add crayfish, little palm oil, boiled deboned fish, little salt and little Maggi, she loves it so much, good luck as u try these

  4. Buy semovita, put 3spoonfulls in a boiling water, stir for few seconds, make sure the water is pretty more than the quantity of d the semovita, stir for few minutes until it's done but it must be watery, put it in ur baby's feeding bottle and add milk, I use Nan2 or Dano full creme. Serve ur baby, u will thank me later. That is my own sma gold.

    1. Madam, full cream milk isn't good for babies.. Pls stop it, their lungs isnt matured for that yet, if you can't afford SMA and the likes, I'd recommend you buy "peak baby" an infant formula. They just introduced it to the market 2 months ago and it's very nutritious. Remain blessed.

    3. You are right sweet mama, adult milk should never be given to a baby till 5yrs reason is that it causes to much protein which can not break down and at the end of d day, which can cause kidney failure in future.though I didn't know this earlier I went for a nutrition seminar and learnt a lot about wot to give kids.pls do research on the effect of adult milk on children .I'm not married yet with no kid but I've taken it upon myself to have the Iinformations at hand, knowledge no dey waste

    5. Correct! A must try. I have a 13 month old who won't take anything except frisogold he's use to and meat.

    7. Hian!!! Pls don't give people wrong info abeg. Babies do need full cream milk (4%) upto the age of 2yrs then you should switch to 2% (semi skimmed) thereafter. They have growing brains and need some of these fats and fatty acids for proper growth and IQ development. After she of 10 EVERYONE should be taking skimmed milk (1%). *omojeje*

    8. Sorry to burst ur bubble but full cream milk isn't meant for kids under 1. In fact no milk should be given to babies under 1. My brother in law did that and his child ended up with allergic reaction. The child was 8 months then. Any info you read will tell you to avoid milk until they are 1. You can use follow on milk, or better still breast milk to make your food. That was the advice from my health visitor

      Delete
    9. Correction: True, full cream milk is NOT meant for kids under 1. The rest of what I wrote is correct though. *omojeje*

    10. Every child is different. My 2nd baby reacted to every baby food in the market. He started eating solid from 3months. It was a combination of Breastfeeding and eating solid. He is now a very healthy 3 year old.
I started with Okro soup and Oat meal. Make your Okro soup with lots of Mackerel ( Titus). The Oat should be old fashioned Oats but blended to powder. Pour into cold water and make like semo. While feeding the child please flatten the morsel for easier swallowing.
I also made mashed Potatoes cooked with Carrot and Peas. Dice your potatoes and cook till almost soft, add your diced carrots, tomatoes n peas. When it's soft either blend or mash on Metal strain to puree.
      Rice and chicken purree
Moimoi n Ogi Baba. There are lots of food to wean a child with. Good luck ladies

    11. Enter your reply...thats what my baby is feeding on. he is 4month plus. I use my boy milk formula with semo. just make sure the semo is watery and well cooked, add blended crayfish. u will love the taste sef. people keeps asking if my baby is 6month

  5. For weaning i.e 6months and up,

Boiled Mashed Irish potatoes mixed with butter is good

Mackerel fish, well boiled is good.

    Frisocrem is ai.

Intro to solids such as ogbono soup and semo cut in tiny bits and rolled into a ball to feed is good.

Can't remember so much now. E don Tey I born.

Although we stopped exclusive when he was 6 months old He loved and still loves adult food too and won't take any cereal or baby food. At six months, I started giving him fruits- apples, water melon and banana, lots of fish and boiled sweet potatoes. Did I mention that he loves beans too, and I make pap with millet and ginger which he loves too with milk.

    13. Did u say 13 weeks or 13 months???? It's too early if it's 13weeks o, WHO recommends starting solids at 6 months. Some mothers start at 4 months, but the baby's digestive tract is not mature enough to process anything other than pure liquid before 6 months.

I really do hope you meant 13 months!

      Dr S.

      Delete
    14. Jesus! Did you say 13 weeks? And you already started on solids for him? That's so so wrong! Mothers pls educate yourselves on baby matters...read wide and join mother forums. Babies are not ready for solids until at least 4 months. In fact 6 months is the acceptable age but 4 months for babies who are strong enough and cannot be filled by milk alone. At 13 weeks your baby should be feeding on just breast milk or breast milk +formula if you cannot do exclusive. Pls go today on www.babycenter.com and register to be receiving weekly emails about your baby's development. Also read all the educative articles there

It should be a continuous thing. But for now I'd advise you take that baby to see a pediatrician first.
Watermelon is so cheap. 350 for a big head. Squeeze the water and give to your baby everyday. You've got apple 60naira. Pear 50naira. Pineapple (sliced) 50 Naira. Is easier o prevent some of this things than treat them.

  16. From 3 months you can start by making apple smoothie, and give her orange juice. Then from six months she start having more fruits, fish and vegetables etc. They just have to be in puree form. There is extensive knowledge on this online, so you can make google your friend, but the age to start food experimentation with kids is 3 months. Good luck

I feed him dawa and joro mixed together then add his milk I don't add milo babies don't need all those artificial sugar now.

I peel the back of an apple cut into very tiny pieces and boil for a while with very clean and boiled water then blend you may add one leaf of ugu is u like.

    Beans
I soak up a little quantity of of beans in a clean water and wash off the back then per boil the beans before cooking add very tiny red oil, enough crayfish, I add cooked and blended meat . No salt no maggi , I add vegetable cook till very soft and when it's done match .. my baby love this food. He is very healthy I don't even know when his first teeth came out, no runny stomach nothing.

    1. Every baby is different. Runny tummy while teething doesn't mean a child is unhealthy. Some babies get their first teeth as early as 3 months, others at almost one year. Some find it painless, others have sleepless nights due to the pains. Some drool, others don't. Some poop a lot, others don't.

    8. I have a 9 month old baby and recently, he won't have any of the processed baby cereals. I've since resorted to making him home made cereals and here's a few:

I mill the normal rice we eat and make it like you would with semo but in a liquidy consistency; i add any fruit of choice in pureed form to the rice cereal and then his milk and tada. .. food is ready.

I also mill the regular oatmeal and make it like u wud make ur oatmeal cereal. I love oatmeal with bananas, so I add it in pureed form and a lil cinnamon finished up with his milk and it's delish. You can also make do with apple puree or peach or even strawberries depending on what you prefer.

I do the semo vita cereal too and it's lovely and also the wheat too (i buy the raw wheat and mill by myself). Just step up with fruits and baby milk.

Apart from these, my baby eats homemade food like boiled rice, plantain, egg, he totally enjoys soups with semo/eba. Also note that at 8 months, ur baby can eat almost anything adults eat except for honey and beans without skin peeled. I think as from 9 months though, deir stomach is able to tolerate beans and oda bean meals (not so sure but I think ive read it somewhere sometime ago)

  22. Anon 17: 35, I BEG YOU OOOO, stop giving that baby pap. Una no hear 6 months exclusive. I could not do it becaus eof work, I did 4 months, then introduce formula, which is milk. please mothers stop listening to "advice" give this give that, until your baby is 6 months, breastmilk or infant formula, sma, nan, peak, just introduced theirs too.

Anon 17 : 13, abeg, how did you do it, i mean weaning. Mine baby is 15 months, na fight ooo. I read sites on weaning and most recommend gradual process. I do not breastfeed her in the day, cos am at work. I have also stopped breastfeeding her before she sleeps, when she cries, I rock or back her. but that NIGHT feeds, na fight ooo, the cry no be here oo, so i still breastfeed her in the middle of the night. I no know how i go take stop am ooo. One night I attempted not to give her, she cried oooo, so tey i was feeling sorry for her. Na that tym, i know say the breastfeeding na real bonding between mother and child.

To the foods, I give, she takes Gerber (Rice and Oats), I use Peak 123, irish potatoes and eggs, although, i will try mashing it with butter or titus fish as suggested by one BV here. She also eats rice, eba, indomie, moi moi

  23. You can give pap that is not too thick with NAN, SMA or the likes. You can also give the baby adult food but mash it first.
You can blend fruits and give the baby.
You also have the option of Cerelac, Nutrend or Friso cream.
Whatever you do, just make sure you give the baby enough milk daily.

  27. Start with puréed fruit mixed with either breast milk or formula bcos baby wldnt like anything lumpy. Meal consistency should be like a creamy mash
Steam peeled apples and pears till soft. In a Blender add breast milk or formula and blend till its smooth. Serve warm
-Puree ripe banana with breast milk or formula till smooth
-Plain apple sauce (which is steamed apples blended with water)
-Carrot puree: Boil/steam carrots and blend with water till smooth
    - You can blend your regular oatmeal in dry blender till smooth and prepare with water or milk for baby
-Mash the yolk of a hard boiled egg and feed

Then add more items. Baby's sense of taste is acute so no need to add maggi or salt
    - Wash the skin off beans and cook as beans porridge with a pressure pot till the beans in melted. Use palm oil sparingly and lots of crayfish. Use ur wooden spoon to completely mash it.
-Yam porridge. Make sure yam is cooked for easy mashing. Little oil, plenty crayfish, undetectable salt
-Most babies like plain okro soup because of its drawy consistency. Use smoked fish. Be sure to remove all skin and bones before you flake the fish. Feed soup alone or with tiny balls of swallow
-Make a tomato stew for your baby. Boil the chicken or fish for stock till it's very soft, remove bones and skin and blend to make it into small pieces. The stew shldnt have detectable pepper and no need for random spices. Serve the stew with rice, soft boiled yam, boiled potato or boiled plantain. Remember to mash the yam/potato/plantain till baby is used to lumpy food
Try to avoid processed or bottled food as much as you can. I know indomie is usually an easy choice but fresh is best. In between meals give carrot sticks, garden egg slices, orange, watermelon or mango slice, tangerine, fruit in homemade yoghurt (let me know if u need the how-to), minced pineapple or minced mixed fruit. The baby might not be able to swallow the fibre but they'll have a good time sucking the fruit and playing with it.
Be sure to give baby lots of water to avoid constipation. Introduce new foods one at a time and watch for food intolerance like extreme gas, vomiting, rashes or allergic reactions. Stop the food if u notice any adverse reaction.

  28. For cereal you can blend the dry local tuwon rice then use a fine sieve to sieve it and store in the freezer. Instead of the regular corn, blend and sieve popping corn. Then a combo of soyabeans, dawa and wheat too can be milled and blended. Make milled baby food like pap and add any kinda baby milk you want to balance it. Mashed potatoes with peas and a little butter plus deboned fish is a must-try too..

  36. As a mother we have to keep discovering ways to ensure our babies are well fed. After weaning my baby I introduced follow up formula no 2 and always fed her with various nestle baby food and other products,it got dawn on me dat even as an adult I wouldn't want to keep eating same tin all d time. I had to think of what I can feed her and ensure she is getting all the nutrient based on the fact that she is even a fussy eater. Here are some list of food mothers can try for babies 6+. N.B all the food needs to be cooked and blended or use a food masher to grind to your taste. Potato puree, vegetable puree, home made rice puree with chicken, apple puree, avocado and banana puree, avocado and cottage cheese puree, yogurt. Pics attached sha. And you can always buy baby puddlings Hope it helps

  38. Nice post stella.

One can try irish potato boiled till very soft and mashed then add baby's milk.

Also banana and apple boiled and puréed then add baby's milk.

Crayfish can be added to the Irish potato and milk mix.

Six months is an ideal time to introduce soups, very healthy they need the oil.

I've heard orange juice is not too good till the child is 1 year cos of its high acidic content. Apple, banana, strawberry, pear is great.

  41. So many wrong ideas here...first exclusive breastfeeding should be done for the first six months..at 6 month start from fruit juice and increase gradually to fruit purée@ 7 months egg yolk @8 months biscuits @ 9months add family food one at a time(to watch out for allergy) also remember don't use so much spices and pepper..golden morn is for adult babies >2yrs..

  43. Hello poster, if your baby at 6 months wants adult food, you can start giving him. As a matter of fact, when you go to general hospital, they recommend you start giving them food from 6 months. Some children don't take cereals at all but will take adult food, give him/her. My baby is 15 months old and has refused to take any other food that Nutrend. Why I have a friend whose baby is the same age but refused to take cereal and she take only adult food. When I say adult food I mean amala, semo, poundo yam, rice, beans, yam and her favourite is semo.
So study your baby, discover what he/she likes and feed him ith it. Don't force him/her to take what he/she does not want.
