Presidency Abolishes Office Of The First Lady

The presidency has said that official portfolio was yet to be assigned to Aisha, the wife of president Muhammadu Buhari, overruling what  hitherto was known as “First Lady’s office”. Apparently renaming it “Office of the Wife of the President”, the presidency however stated that Mrs. Buhari would, for now, be saddled with women and youth related issues in the country.

The Presidency was reacting to allegations in some Nigerian media that the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari has moved into the First Lady’s office in the Aso Villa describing the allegation as totally false and fictitious. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu said that even though there was absolutely nothing wrong with Mrs. Buhari making use of the office space reserved for the First Lady, she had not done so in her capacity.

Shehu stated that under president Buhari, the office shall be completely different from what obtained in the past, saying that the era of the First Ladies issuing oil wells and licenses was gone.

“President Buhari promised that there would be a clear difference between the role played by his wife during his tenure and that played by many previous First Ladies. “All that ostentation, ubiquitousness and arrogance we have come to expect from the office are over and done with.  Change has come.

“The ideal platform from which she will be useful to Nigeria’s women and children is still being thought out.  Once this has been concluded on, Mrs. Buhari’s role will become clearer to all Nigerians. There will be nothing shady or hidden about it. There will be no access to public funds. It will be purely private and voluntary”, he said.

The presidential spokesman recalled that the time Mrs. Buhari had to make use of the office was at the beginning of the present administration.

He added that the meeting during which she hosted the wives of governors was held in a section of the Villa’s banquet hall, not in the First Lady’s office. “Her only visit to that office was at the point of the take-over of the Villa by the incoming administration.

“Out of respect to Mrs. Buhari, the Sierra-Leonian First Lady, Mrs. SiaKoroma recently surrendered her position of head of Africa’s First Ladies to Mrs. Buhari, inviting her to take up the same seat which Mrs. Jonathan hurriedly handed over a few weeks to the handover of her husband’s government to President Buhari. Again, all these things are currently under consideration and no decision has been arrived at presently,” Shehu said.

    3. .....but why are you Igbos so aggrieved. I noticed somethings yesterday on etc's write up, you all supported him because you do not like Buhari. Why do I have the feeling your tribe is praying for him to fail? Do you know if he fails it affects your tribe also? Please stop being biased and start seeing the good in this administration. Personally I am not from Buhari's tribe or religious affiliation but I am already seeing so much positive difference already just few months in to his rule.
Do yourselves a favour, purge your system of this hate for his tribe and religion after that assess him you will realise he aint so bad after all. Pray for your President to overcome the challenges in this country, it will be to our benefit not his alone.

  13. I don't see any importance of that office.

The word, 'ostentation ' was rightly used.

    Indiscriminate waste of money.

It would really be a breath of fresh air, if there's nothing like, 'office of the first lady'.

We have more important problems in Nigeria, than the First Lady hosting and being hosted by the 36 governors' wives, every month.

  15. If the only change is in the title ascribed to who is chopping the funds then please let's hear word. If she is in the office, doing the same thing as previous first ladies then she might as well stop disturbing our peace. If she chooses not to be pompous or behave rudely like Mama peace then that's a personal choice not a change agenda.

  18. What's the difference between the two offices? It won't be funded with taxpayers money at the federal level but I know the governors will be fallen head over heels to fund it; so that they will be in her good books and that of the president. Or is she going to be the minister of women and youth affairs. The ppl font want to keep to their campaing talk. We don't need any office for now. You have told the world that Nigeria is broke. Buhari don't add to our suffering I beg.

  30. Not only Muslim women, women in general. She can use her capacity as the wife of the president to achieve a lot. The good thing is that there wouldn't be any financial waste, as she won't have access to funds or be included in the yearly budget. So anything she does outside of the use of/waste of funds is welcome

  31. Anybody thinking that PMB,s wife will not have office funded by Govt is on a long thing.I have learnt to take Buhari's Campaign promises with a pinch of salt cos I have discovered with some current events that most of d condenminations and promises were made out of desperation for Power.
