ETCETERA Writes ''Dear Biafrans...''

Hmm .......

He starts his letter with.....

''I have been receiving a lot of mails and phone calls in recent weeks requesting that I lend my voice in support of the ongoing campaign for the sovereign state of Biafra and to also speak up against the recent shut down of Radio Biafra by National Broadcasting Commission.

I have decided to make my opinion known to those who have been bombarding me with requests to support the Biafran movement.

Yes, I believe that the Igbo have been marginalised in Nigeria right from 1970 till date. I also believe that as a people, the Igbo have every right to speak out and seek redress. I believe that no tribe or ethnic group in Nigeria deserves to be marginalised or shut out by certain quarters of government because of an incident of the past. Just like every Igbo man, I believe that Biafra was a good dream born out of a necessity at that time. It was a good dream which went horribly wrong and became a nightmare for us, the Igbo people and the whole of Nigeria from 1967 to 1970, from which I believe we have woken up.

It will be foolhardy to dream the same dream in the same way and manner without thoroughly accounting for why and how it turned into a nightmare, and factoring in the changes that have taken place in Nigeria since the 1960s.

The thought that the actualisation of the sovereign state of Biafra is in itself the solution to all the problems of Ndigbo is to display an understandable naivety about human nature and today’s politics. What we need as a people is a new vision that will encompass the lessons of the past, the changes that have taken place since the end of the civil war, the reality of present day Nigeria and demand for a system founded on justice, liberty and equality under the rule of law for Ndigbo and non Igbo as well.

I believe this new vision is attainable. They say charity begins at home and in this regard, I believe it is time for every honest and sincere Igbo man or woman, to channel his or her energy towards actualising good leadership and government in Igboland by joining the political process. It is time for every one of us to unite against corruption in our land. It is time for Ndigbo to come together to reverse this ubiquitous trend of bad leadership ravishing Igboland and put in place a system that would enable the best of us to emerge as leaders.

Great nations are ruled by their best minds and not by a band of common thieves without respect for individual liberty and democracy that do nothing but devise ingenious ways to looting the treasury and serve the vilest and most primitive of human instincts. Without this political and cultural change embedded in the concept of our future, Igboland will remain underdeveloped, and that in itself, will constitute a gargantuan problem for us in the future.

Making this necessary change in igboland will ensure that if and ever or when Nigeria collapses as a result of our collective idiocy, irresponsibility, ignorance and corruption, and the jumbo pay of politicians, Ndigbo will be better placed to build a new nation based on justice, equality, rule of law, tolerance, development and honesty. War has never been the solution to any problem. I didn’t witness the civil war but from what I saw in my recent visit to Maiduguri, Adamawa and Plateau state, I have become a disciple of dialogue as a means to resolve issues.

If Biafra will become a reality, it shouldn’t be through the barrel of a gun.

It is wrong to seek divorce by putting a gun to your spouse’s head. We should realise that a divorce from Nigeria is also possible if the Nigeria state comes to its natural end because of years of ethnic and religious prejudices, injustices, and vision-less irresponsible, corrupt leadership that failed to lay the foundation of a viable state and make the necessary social investment for its survival. This might be the natural course of events if Nigeria continues to sleep walk into disaster and neglect honest nation building. We shouldn’t continue to pursue the Biafra dream in the way and manner some people and groups are doing at the moment without regard to the present reality.

It can only undermine the whole essence of the struggle. As an Igbo man, there is nothing I want for Igbo that I do not want for other ethnic groups. There is nothing I wish for my fellow Christians that I do not wish for Muslims. We are all humans after all. We are all brothers and sisters divided by language, skin colours and religion. I believe that enlightenment is recognition of this basic facts, and that underneath our skins, flows blood of the same colour and minds that can think alike and able to overcome the prejudices which our difference try to impose on our judgment. There is nothing that can justify the killing of a fellow man.

I can only lend my voice to a vision that doesn’t entail the destruction of lives and property.

I am sorry to say that the continuous clamour for the recognition of Biafra by America may not yield much because of the selfish nature of America’s foreign policy. If there is nothing in it for America, America won’t get involved. We are a great and industrious people. For a start, won’t it be better to seek economic independence and have Nigeria and the rest of the world depend on us for something? Today, Africa has gone from car assemblage to total manufacturing.

I am proud that I am alive to witness this history, that a Nigerian made car can actually be better that the Toyotas and Hondas of this world, and it is all due to the ingenuity of an Igbo man. Ndigbo, this can be a place to start.
Igbo kwenu!!

  9. He has made some salient points. It's better to achieve goals without bloodshed. The typical nature of the US is to provide weapons for both warring parties and foster animosity. Then after the war, they get in and divide the spoils among themselves. Just like the Nigerian Police, the US is NOT your friend.

  10. Excellent writeup. Today I totally agree with him. Only those who did not witness or heart wrenching stories about the war are those that are clamoring for biafra.

honestly that massob or whatever needs to be quenched. They are to be blamed for fanning the embers of hatred in the illiterate igbo boys back home. These people have no idea what warfare is all about. Where have you seen a secession with war? We haven't fully recovered from the first one, y'all are clamoring for another. Without the south south states how do you want to operate your republic? As a land locked nation? In the midst of your "enemies"?

That aside, an average igbo man hates his fellow igbo. I've been cheated countless times by my so called brothers. Once they notice you are igbo it gives them the"right" to rip you of without remorse.
There are so many things wrong with us. Fix that first before allowing some uneducated money thieving idiots to send us 2 centuries back.

My dad fought in the war. He's such a great man. whenever he talks about the civil war i still see that sadness in his eyes. Abeg most of us are not ready to become refugees in our own country. Wait oh! Who do you think will lead us successfully? Peter obi? Rochas? Lmao! We don't have anything close to Ojukwu in our generation. Just a bunch of beer parlor generals. You want to instigate a war that isn't in place, while the war against humanity underneath your nose is not important enough for u to buy ammunition for? Isn't that a bit selfish? If that energy is joined with that of the army, wouldn't Boko haram be a thing of the past by now.. as this same energy you exude will put them to permanent extinction. Just saying oh Linda!!!

This write up made sense. Looks like the backlash from the "why men cheat" article got to him. Lol

Sometimes I wish Nigeria could split but, that's no solution really. Oil producing regions are mostly minorities and there would still be marginalisation.

The Nigerian economy needs to be diversified, period.
We need a serious boost on sustainable agriculture and solid mineral mining for home use as well as export.

Power supply and security has to be seriously improved on so as to encourage FDI in the country; the man power is obviously not a problem cos both skilled and unskilled labour is abundantly available.

The country needs revamping abeg. So many resources just going to waste. Nigerians are sitting on the banks of the river Niger and yet washing the soap off their eyes with spittle. Very sad.

Instead of them to build shopping mall in their states and develop their states, they build businesses in other states and develop other states, why is this? why can't they develop their own land.
It is because of their hatred of one another, their greed and their hypocrisy, they think they can survive in biafra, they will just kill themselves like dogs.
They open their mouths shamelessly to say they develop different places except their own land, they think its an achievement not to develop their own land.
One thing I know is that they can develop anywhere they want to develop but when it comes down to the nitty gritty, they cannot carry another mans land on their head back to their village or to biafra.
We will see who will have the last laugh, igbo people had better start developing their dirty smelling land and villages and get the hell out of Nigeria. Sore losers

  32. Yes an Ijebu man can marry an Ilesha person. A Yoruba person marries for love. It is only a Yoruba man that you will see marry Igbo, Hausa, Benin, Rivers, Oyinbo, Caribbean, Indian, American, Sierra Leon, Calabar, Togolese, you name the tribe and nationality, if a Yoruba man loves a woman he will marry her.

DO NOT BRING YORUBA PEOPLE INTO YOUR WOES. They don't give a damn about your issues, fight your bloody battles on your own. That was how they started the biafran war with their own hands by killing Hausa leaders and when the Hausa's decided to take revenge on them they tried to drag Yoruba people into it and when Yoruba people refused to join them in their foolishness and senselessness, they said Yoruba people betrayed them, hence their massive hatred for the Yoruba's till today.

Dem go look for Hausa trouble and instead of them to face Hausa and die alone, dem want make Yoruba die with them.

Yoruba man get sense he will not die for problems created by another tribe. Face your problems on your own, na by force?

Did u see dem kill for their right??? Of course not!

You say igbos look for Hausa troubles???? You are just a big fool for that. The igbos go about their normal businesses without looking for trouble. They've got mouth but they are never violent.

By the way, in response to part of what he said; I have a about 3 family members who are Igbo men and the married Yoruba women, so not all Igbo men will allow tribal sentiments stand in the way of their love but the ones with bad and hateful attitudes are giving the entire tribe a bad name. We should be able to put our salient points across or even agree to disagree without spewing so much hate abeg. I'm also mixed-tribe by the way.

  33. Well written article, am very happy young Igbo's see things in different way now. No need dwelling in the past like our folks did, such sentiments has never helped us and will never help us. We can remember our fallen "HEROS" but should channel our energy into loving one another more unlike what we see between Anambra state and Imo and other states with their marriage/relationship of inconvenience. Igbo leaders seeking for their selfish agitation should not drag the youths into it, am not fighting for NO ONE because life is too sweet for anyone to fall under the barrel of bullet for unnecessary war.
When the drum of war starts, same so called igbo elites will ship their families to Europe/America leaving the poor/vulnerable to be killed and maimed unnecessarily by Nigeria solders.
Enough with the Biafra and Ndigbo topic .

    2. Just out of curiosity, how does one leave a country? Do you send a request to the federal government or do you have several people sign a petition and then present it to the president? How exactly do you attain the extraction (or whatever it's called) of yourself from your current country? Also, have you made the necessary requests or applications and was it denied? If it was, where's the proof or documentation of denial and what were the reasons listed for denial? I'm so sorry, but I'm just very curious about all these things because I've been hearing for the longest time; Igbos saying " we want to leave but they won't let us" etc, and some other peeps saying "leave already now! You people just keep threaghtening to leave but you still sit there" etc. and some of the Igbos seem really embittered about not being allowed to leave but I actually haven't seen or heard any steps being carried towards achieving that. Also, if Igbos were to leave, can't they just sign something and start that way? I hear a lot of things about starting a war, this and that; must there be war for them to leave and start their own country? I mean, Czechoslovakia was a country that decided to break and become Czech and Slovak (not sure if a war was what got them there) but "some" Igbos who want to leave even already have their name (Biafra), can't they achieve that amicably without war? And finally, is all this hard to attain because not all Igbos actually want to split from Nigeria, is that the real issue there? (I'm asking this because I know a whole lot if Igbo peeps who are actually not interested in it in any way, shape or form while others are interested in certain aspects of things but not all). There seems to be a lot of threats, counter threats and warmongering, is that the only way forward or are some people just bloodthirsty and want to shed blood including innocent bloods of their own people at all cost? Please advice, because I was just pondering on these questions. I know I don't know too much about a lot of things and I'm just seeking people's knowledge and take on things.Thank you.

  37. Doris thanks for your comment, IGBO people are the most tribalistic tribe in Nigeria and they have no shame. They want to start another war and are constantly blaming Yoruba people for their issues because they cannot face the Hausa man who dealt with them during the Biafran war.

If you ask them what the Yoruba people ever did to them, they cannot give any definite or concrete answer because they have been brainwashed over the years by their older generation that put them in their present predicament.
They want to bring Yoruba people down with them but Yoruba people are not followers and they have their own plans for their own people which does not include war, tribalism, hatred and bloodshed.
Yoruba people refuse to be their allies against the Hausa's and other tribes in Nigeria and it still pains them till today. Yoruba people are lovers and not fighters, they are not tribalistic and are not full of hate.

The whole of Nigeria and the world can finally see the kind of people they are, they are constantly spreading hate and trying to start a war in Nigeria by trying to turn other tribes against Yoruba people. I'm happy that people from other tribes are peaceful people, intelligent and can see through their hatred and charade. IGBO PEOPLE YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN.

    1. Patrick have the Yorubas not been crying for their Oduduwa kingdom and true Federalism. That is what Nigeria needs not what we have right now. Why must you force a group of people thatvdon't want to belong to a country where they feel marginalised to stay. It is akin to enslavement. Why don't you listen to their pleas objectively instead of with a biased mind. If not for the oil do you still think that this country would be one or would have been divided by now. Lastly what is so wrong and difficult about secession. They did it in the former Soviet Union, in Great Britain when the Irish seceeded and i am sure that Scotland will very soon too.

    6. Patrick you say igbos are hateful? The tone with which you typed your comment shows that you are worse than us if that be the case. The major reason why igbos point hands at yorubas is cos of awolowo. He was the master mind behind starvation and payment of 20 pounds to every igbo man despite the millions they had. The pain of that event is the long standing contempt for yorubas. Most of us have let go. It's people like you that keep opening those wounds by talking out of your anus. You are yoruba. You know nothing about the war except the amala and ewedu restaurant discussions your fathers had about it, so pls just keep your big mouth shut.

  38. Nice writeup. Igbos don't need to secede to make an impact on their zone.

If they can only come together and harness their industrious nature, they can become a great region.

They are just too individualistic. Everyman wanting to prove his superiority over the other.

Aba and many other places could be improved and developed to be powerful technological and economic hub within West Africa and the world beyond.

Tackling Corruption and lack of visionary leadership will go long way in making them formidable again. Not necessarily how many indegenes they have at the centre.

There is no need for war.

Watch Naij the history of Nigeria here https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLD2GU7aNBQ7FLrxj57U7ZdJPBjQFmsQ3q to educate yourself on how the Igbos looked for the trouble of Hausas which ultimately lead to them killing igbos like rats during the biafran war. Your people killed their Hausa leaders. Even after an agreement was reached with Ojukwu, trust Igbo man he thought he was smarter than everybody else and backed out of the agreement thinking he could plan a successful coup against Nigeria but he failed and ran away out of the country like a coward leaving his people to die like rats.

Umuada now borrow Yoruba culture called aso ebi, they spray money, they tie gele like Yoruba, they use Yoruba music and instruments gan gan and others in their music to make it sound better at their traditional weddings. After they have borrowed the Yoruba aso ebi culture, then they will turn around and abuse Yoruba's for wearing aso ebi when they are not even wearing it at the event they are referring to. Igbo people should fucking face their culture and stop borrowing and sticking their noses in other tribes culture, shameless people.

  55. Then take your grievances up with Awolowo or his descendants if you must, not Yoruba people. What you said Awolowo did has made Igbo people hateful of all Yorubas which is a fact. You cannot blame an entire tribe for the actions of one man, especially when there are more tribes and different cultures within that tribe. Igbo people are tribalistic, Yoruba people are not fact.

  56. Then don't start a war, that is why it is called war, I have never heard of a war where people give their enemies food during a war. That is what you call a very good strategy during a war so don't blame Awolowo, blame Ojukwu who started the war. War is not for the weak and faint hearted.

  59. Oh so Igbo's hate Yoruba because they did not give them food during the Biafra war, does that make sense during a war?. Igbo's carried weapons and started killing Nigerians of other tribes, the other tribes defended themselves, and while defending themselves from the war Igbo's started, Igbo's also expected them to give them food.

Unbelievable, you can imagine how these Igbo people think. Why did they not stock pile food when they knew they were going to start a war, it shows you how foolish and dumb they are. They expected Yoruba people to give them food from their farms or they expected Hausa people that they always insult of not contributing anything to Nigeria to give them beef, donate cows and all the other foods produced in the North that is transported and sold all over Nigeria to them.

Hausa man will drive trailer all the way from the North transporting food to be sold all over Nigeria so we see food to eat, they will sleep in these trailers on the road for days, bad roads that have no street light and they say Hausa does not contribute to Nigeria.

Then they expected these tribes that they took up arms against to give them food during a war they started, just like they did not vote for Buhari but they were the first people to produce a list of demands.

Anyway, I'm expecting them to start Biafra war 2 and be expecting Yoruba people to give them Shawama and Ice cream. Biafrans oya start composing your food list.

  61. anon 01:08 you are right it should be a thing of pride but not when the tribe copying and borrowing from the Yoruba tribe say they hate Yorubas, and constantly insult the culture they copy and borrow from. If Igbos hate the Yoruba tribe, then they should have absolutely nothing to do with copying or borrowing from the Yoruba culture. This is the hypocrisy people have a problem with. I think that is the point that anon 17:52 is trying to make here. Yoruba people don't understand and hate hypocrisy. Yorubas are proud of their culture and they stick to it, they don't need to copy and borrow from the Igbo tribe. Culture is culture, stick to your culture.
