Cardinal Okogie Says Yoruba Traditional Rulers Deceived Jonathan During Election

A former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Anthony Cardinal Okogie, has disclosed how some monarchs from the SouthWest region deceived former president Goodluck Jonathan during the 2015 presidential election campaigns.

Speaking with Punch recently, the cleric said “Did you see the photograph I saw; you saw him in the midst of obas; you saw the way they pointed their sticks (at him). If you are a Yoruba man, do they (monarchs) pray with that kind of thing? No way! ‘You want prayer? We will give you prayer’”.

According to him, religious leaders should be blamed for the role they played in Jonathan’s defeat, saying they didn’t warn him of what lied ahead of him like he (Okogie) did.

“This means they were deceptive. I am not ready to do that kind of thing. If it is the last bullet, I will rather die and meet my God. This is one thing that is wrong with this nation: we have many people that are ready to do anything because of money. They don’t think about their neighbour”.

    1. It was an open secret na. He led himself to be misled! He himself should be blamed!
The present state of the nation shows how previous governments, especially the immediate past administration has failed Nigerians woefully.
That has always been my argument with people who cry marginalisation as if foreigners have been governing them since 1999.
The last administration capitalised on our diversity to impoverished us along ethnicity, sectarian and political lines.
While the youth who are at the receiving end kept & still keep on fighting themselves on social media, on the streets & in beer parlours, these rulers kept on amassing wealth for their generations yet unborn at the expense of the poor Nigerians.

Stella I grew up in P.H with the fear that Yoruba people are not to be trusted, growing up my big sis was working with Nafcon then she told us that immediately she started working some people called her to be careful with the yoruba people aroun,if she really want to work for a long time in the company but she ignored those warming.According her the most gentle and innocent friend she pally with was the one that stabbed her, guess what she is from yoruba...my dear since then I fear yoruba tribe like I fear snake.

    6. I have immeasurable respect for Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie. I grew up knowing him as my god father.. and on this one, I can't but align with him. He's very brash and fearless. He commands a lot of respect and people revere his opinion. The aura I drew from him as a child has not changed. (I digress)

Like Ghanaman rightly said, it's an open secret that Jonathan allowed himself be swayed and misled. However, Jonathan isn't the first president that had selfish people around him. They've always been there. But the difference with his administration and the reason they penetrated conspicuously was becos he (GEJ) also couldn't use his discretion.

All over the world where u have powerful leaders, you'll always find selfish servants around them. But a wise leader would know how to handle such self serving individuals without offending anyone.

It's one thing to be advised to do something, and another for you to filter through the advise given you so to know which would resolve ur immediate crisis. The wisdom is what was lacking in Jonathan.. and not only the Obas took advantage of him.. everyone did. Including school children and road side musicians. He was a misguided well of fortune that every Tom Dick and Harry drew from.

Everyone else except himself benefited from his indiscriminate disposition.

    1. But what the Obas did wasn't wrong, if u asked me. It was Jonathan that sought their attention and asked to be blessed by them. Obas should be non partisan...and as such, should be open to receive any leader no matter his political party affiliation.
He wanted to garner their support for him and he got it. As with tradition, they pointed their staff of office towards him while they prayed for him. Same way a pastor will hold his bible towards u to pray. So nothing extraordinary about the act up there. But because some Nigerians are bias, they misinterpreted the whole act and turned it against the Obas, saying that they were bribed.
Didn't Oba Adetona openly admonish Jonathan?? People have forgotten that o.

They also said the same when GEJ visited the top pastors too. And it makes me wonder, whether people expected them to refuse Jonathan entry to their territory, or to refuse him prayers. As it is now, any public person who is approached by the president would be seen as his supporter even when the person is not interested in politics. Men of God are in trouble now cos they'll be judged by whom they choose to pray for. We need to be objective sometimes though. I just tire

  15. Lol. If there is one thing I have come to understand about the Yoruba race, its the fact that the word "NO" doesnt exist in their lexicon hence the accusation in some quarters that they are dishonest.
The best thing for a foreigner to do is to acquire this knowledge and never again will you be disappointed by a Yoruba man. Diplomacy never had a better practitioner :D

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. You are politically incorrect my dear. When the 'NO" is non existent in their lexicon, as u put it...it means that they are telling u that they want to remain politically neutral. As giving any affirmative answer would mean that they align with a certain political party. So yes, diplomacy is activated to avoid being misconstrued. Albeit, they are still being castigated even with their 'fear" of stating the big 'NO'. Ahaha lol. Free them abeg

  24. Ever since i've bn reading the blog, this is the only man that is speaking the truth about Nigeria and her citizens. It's all about money, everything is about money. The moral justification in Nigeria is money. The way money is worshipped in Nigeria, wow..... no wonder the bible says yu can not serve 2 masters. The respected pipu in the society are the ones with money, weather it was stolen or otherwise. Money is now the yardage all the way. I feel sorry for the generation behind. What we are failing to realise is that, that kind of attitude, behaviour thinking, justification, aspirations for money is just a time bomb Nigeria is sitting on. No wonder the saying " the love of money is the root of all evil". That's why evil is flying around, walking around, running around, crawling around, in fact everything around in Nigeria. The amount of churches, mosques etc. Every friday night, Nigeria is number one nation when it comes to pipu attending vigils. But the bible says God can not be mocked. We need to go back to the basic. We need to start teaching the right things and re prioritised our visions, our aims, our objectives. At least if not for dis generation, for generations behind. Religion is now money making machine playing on pipu's vulnerability. dodo_36@live.com

  25. Nigerians went out to vote for who they wanted to vote for and the person won the elections. What has prayers or non prayers from traditional chiefs and oba's have to do with him being voted out by Nigerians who were tired of his government. I thought GEJ is a Christian so what is he looking for prayers from traditional rulers for.
All he needed to do was pray to his God and govern his country honestly and competently that is all that is required, not prayers from traditional rulers. People always looking for excuses and who to blame. Instead of the cardinal to blame GEJ for not being faithful to his God, not surrounding himself by thieves and not robbing the country blind, he is blaming traditional rulers who pointed sticks at him. Stupidity at it's highest.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yorubas wanted GEJ out because he was ruing the country. Obasanjo and a lot of people warned him on what will happen but GEJ thought because he was president he can do as he pleases by bribing people during elections and going from Church to Mosque to traditional rulers to pray for him, even the people closest to him were all deceiving him. They all took his money and swore for him. You think traditional rulers are stupid to pray for him and bless him when he is robbing and destroying the country. They would have been very foolish to do that and they are not foolish, he went to them, they did not go to him. We all saw how during the elections instead of him to campaign and state his intentions he was acting like a prostitute going from babalawo to church etc.

Call it betrayal or whatever you want. The next time someone steals from you, pray for him and bless him for stealing from you.
