A TYPE OF EPILEPSY CALLED AUTOMATISM

Good day Mrs Korkus, My name is ---------------- and a Medical doctor by profession. (This post is exclusive to your blog and please I wouldn't want my name published).

Sometime ago, there was this news that went viral about a Yoruba actress Yetunde who was caught in someones house sleeping and she was alleged to be a thief , she claimed she couldn't remember how she got there. I saw a story circulate about the same actress recently being caught stealing and was beaten up.
I quickly recalled a patient I had back in the days. His complaint was that he was driving home from work and suddenly felt the urge to stop his car. He pulled over by the roadside and that was all he remembered. Next thing regained consciousness in the church surrounded by prayer warriors (he was naked), he later learnt that after he pulled over, he got down from the car and started removing his clothes .
Afterwards, he was going thru prayer sessions and everything seemed okay until he had another episode and the people around him took pictures of his act.
After series of mental health examination a consultant Neuropsychiatrist diagnosed him of a rare presentation of  EPILEPSY called AUTOMATISM. That was the first time I have ever come across that as against the normal type where people have convulsions.
My patient was thereafter placed on appropriate medication and has never had a repeat episode since then.
People with this disorder may just get into a strangers house and start cooking, cleaning, washing stuff like they are in their house once the epilepsy starts and usually don't remember how they did all that when they regain consciousness. Infact, they can even doze off in the strangers house (deep sleep) while the person might come and meet them there. Some people exhibit milder automatic behaviours that isn't harmful.

Finally, the family and friends of Yetunde should take her to visit a NEUROPSYCHIATRIST (not a psychologist, a psychiatrist is a medical doctor with psychiatry as field of speciality) for a full mental state examination.  

She could be lynched one day in a country like ours.

AMEBO GIST - CHURCH DISTURBANCE

Dear BVs,

My street alone has four churches: Redeemed, Brotherhood of the cross and start, Celestial church and one other. The white garment church makes the most noise out of all the other churches on Sundays. They start from early morning till late afternoon so I try to go for my Mass during that time. They use trumpets and scream at the top of their voice with their loudspeakers facing the houses around them. And this is a residential neighborhood in Surulere.

I told myself that once my rent expires I would move out so from now till next year I would endure all this. When I was looking for accommodation I forgot that proximity to churches is a factor. But now I've learnt my lesson the hard way.

I'm someone who works all week but during the weekends I can't even rest because of these churches. If it is not evening service, it is choir practice. And why do they have loudspeakers outside? It is only in Nigeria that such indiscipline happens.

The worst happened this week when the white garment church started a programme that involved daily night vigils. This started since Sunday night. You can imagine my alarm when I get home from work and hear them screeching at the top of their voices. How is this even Christianity when they are inconveniencing the whole neighborhood in the name of prayers? This doesn't end till almost 7 am when I leave for work. I haven't had quality sleep since Saturday night last week because of this church. I wonder when the church members sleep and go to work if they attend daily vigils from 6 pm till almost 7am on a daily basis. Before I go crazy in this town, who knows where I can go to report them in Lagos? Also which BVs have experienced this and found a solution? Do people on the island experience this uncalled stress?
