Omosalewa Bilkiss Osomo's NYSC Experience With 'The Igbo People'

This writeup should open your eyes to STOP JUDGING A BOOK BY ITS COVER!

''Dear Stella,
Good day. I would like to share a Narrative. Though, not seeking advice as most narratives portray; It's a post I wrote to enlighten BVs and friends alike on the need to steer clear of judging people based on their tribe... And of course, to also show appreciation. It's titled: The "Igbo People".

The thought of the "Igbo people" and how they scared me to because of "their pride and wickedness" was all I had in mind when I saw my posting letter and found Abia state boldly written on it. I began to shiver, whilst strategizing on how to call those "aunts" and "uncles" I hadn't called in a while to help with my instant redeployment. On a second thought however, I decided to give it a try, bearing in mind the effort of the NYSC scheme to merge the gap between disparate regions.

My name is Omosalewa Bilkiss Osomo; a Yoruba girl with limited number of Igbo friends prior to NYSC, but this is me repeating the cliche in caps lock "NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER".

After spending a year at the Umuahia LGA of Abia state as a corps member, while travelling to other states within the east to douse my inquisitons, I am boldly able to say the Igbo people that I once feared as a result of listening to stories from unexposed people, can be extremely nice, tolerating, caring and like other tribes, respectful. You shouldn't judge an entire tribe, race or religion based on individual errors.

I spent the entire NYSC period in a FREE, well furnished and comfortable house; thanks to an "Igbo person" Mr Nnamdi Ezeigbo, the CEO of SLOT systems limited, whose mother cannot imagine collecting money from corps members before giving them accommodation. Like she always said, "I no need your money, wetin I wan use am do? My family dey different states, people fit help them too".

I spent the entire NYSC year (had my POP on the 2nd of July) learning the Igbo language, thanks to the very accommodating and friendly indigenes of the state. I also spent it baking cakes, thus making more money; thanks to the support from the indigenes.

No doubt, there is always that "bad egg" in every organization. The "Igbo people" cannot and MUST NOT be characterised by those individuals. Judge an individual by their character, and spare judging the whole tribe. I just want to say, The "Igbo people" are great people too!!!

Thanks and God bless as you share. For reference purpose, please find attached a few pictures of myself and my flatmates. Will also be willing to answer any of your questions.

Thanks ma'am''.

Beautiful writeup, thank you for sending this in..thank you!

    2. I'm Igbo, I grew up in PH, tertiary education in Delta, served in Yoruba land and married a Yoruba lady. As you can imagine, I've seen the good and bad in several tribes and I believe that human beings are essentially the same. They may come flavoured by tribe, accent, culture, wealth, education etc, but we are the same. An arrogant bastard will remain an arrogant bastard wether he is rich, poor, educated, illiterate, Igbo, Hausa or Yoruba. However, the way he is seen by you (and what you are willing to tolerate/excuse) will vary depending on if you are biased towards rich people, Yorubas, Igbos etc. An unbiased person sees people for what they are.

Omoselawa Bilkiss is obviously an unbiased person by nature because a biased Yoruba person could have had the same experience that she had on arrival at Abia but would have perceived things differently, which in turn (plus her attitude) will have resulted in a whole different experience for her.

Actually I've spent all my life in the west, and it baffles me when I hear the yoruba's saying igbo are wicked and heat humans. But That's not true, the igbo are very friendly people and very accomodating. When you stay in igbo land, they don't stress you like the yoruba's does in terms of omo ni ile things, etc. That doesn't mean the yoruba's aren't Good. They're Good people also.

For all those shallow BVs that associate
    Yorubas with Dirtyness and Obesity
    Ibos with shady Businesses
    Edos with Prostitution
    Hausas with Illiteracy
    Urhobos(men) with Laziness
Calabars with promiscuity /Menial Jobs. Etc
True such traits may be there but it would be foolish to rope all in when you've not had time Judge them personally.
Every tribe has the good and the bad, we should learn to accommodate and accept all irrespective of their Tribe and what they are known for.
The Hausa's that people so fear are the most honest and truthful people you would ever deal with, I've seen yoruba's that are Bad ass Cooks! Urhobo men that are Caring and hardworking..
I only expect such statements like those above from illiterates.

  37. I told my landlord here who charges high rent yet harasses the tenants that it's not fair to treat corpers like this. I told him if everybody fit carry house for head I will simply pick up my father's house to come and serve. I told him that there are two corpers living free of charge in my father's house in the village. This story is not strange to me, u know why? Most igbo men have big houses they built in their various villages that are empty till Christmas and other festivities. Who do you think end up occupying some rooms in these houses? Strangers, corpers, passerby, people in transit.
I can't remember the last time we didn't have a corper living in our villa house.
It's a pity when I hear people claim igbos are heartless. I simply read, laugh and continue stirring the food on fire I am cooking to feed my friendly neighbours from other ethnic groups.

FYI, I have never seen a tribe that likes their language more than yorubas

    3. Some posts here are borne out of sheer hatred and ignorance of the Igbo. I served in Ibadan. Nobody spoke English for me even when they knew i was Igbo. Even here in Lagos, no matter the level of education, Yoruba and Hausa people speak their languages in their offices. It is only the Igbo man that will speak English to another igbo man even when he knows he is igbo. However whenever two Igbo people speak igbo, other tribes get jittery. Why?

My landlord, a yoruba went to secondary school yet anytime i want to see him, he insists i come with an interpreter. i was surprised the day i saw him in the bank speaking good English. I do not bear any grudges against him. May be he likes and is proud of his language. It is the same with an Hausa man. You hardly hear them speak English when they are together and they dont care whether you understand them or not. In fact they are more at home with you when you speak Hausa.

Therefore it sad when somebody goes to Igbo land to serve and he is complaining that they speak igbo to him when they know he is not Igbo. The french do it, the Germans do it too. So what's the hell about the igbo man speaking Igbo in his own land. Sad, very sad.

      I'm Igbo and proud.

  57. In my opinion all the three major tribes in Naija are as bigoted as each other. As far as I am concerned the most accommodating people in Naija are the minorities. They are the glue that hold us together.

  63. Igbos are actually very nice people. Just respect them, and they will reciprocate such. I have had great experiences with Igbo people.

  65. Why?

  67. This was an uplifting, refreshing and unifying read. We need more of these types of stories and experiences if Naija is to really remain one, united nation particularly among the youths.

  68. we associate tribes with certain things because they are in the majority who practice or allow those things....

-yorubas are truly dirty...most of them still use poos in their houses.. baby mama syndrome is more encouraged...not because they are more promiscuous but cos they tolerate it more. adultery is more rampant with them and they do it more openly. they do more rituals for money.

    - igbos are very money conscious and borderline greedy....drug traffickers, fake products, cultist...Igbo girls are very money conscious and do more runs...baby mamas are not common cos their society accepts it less and most Igbo men will not marry you.. they always feel they are wiser than any other tribe.

-hausas/muslims pretenders, hypocrites who drink, womanise etc but make others believe they are holier....all they do is pursue contracts. they love to build systems where the poor will continue to be poor and subservient to the rich....

-calabar people are very promiscuous....men and women, fetish too...marine spirit drives their promiscuity...if the women take care of their men and its all natural like they make the world believe how come their men are also promiscuous?

-edo and prostitution....they are a majority....go to Italy and Europe they make up most of the prostitutes and runs girls....go to Benin and confirm...they are also fetish..i have no apologies to anyone cos I lived in London for years and know this fact....that said I have Benin friends who are not prostitutes or fetish....

in all the above am talking of percentage and not saying its 100% but when something is common amongst a group of people who can you blame...

    curse me and die.......bye
