Two Cooks Nabbed In Lagos For Poisoning Employers' Soup

Two cooks, who are nationals of the Benin Republic, Victor Hounkpe and David Amusu, have been arrested by the police in Lagos for allegedly poisoning their employers’ meal in the Lekki area of the state which resulted in the loss of consciousness and hospitalisation of not only the couple, but also of their two security guards.

The incident happened on Wednesday, April 22, at about 5pm, when Hounkpe, who had stayed for about a month in the house, prepared vegetable soup for the family. All members of the family, including the security personnel in the compound ate the soup which was served by the cook for dinner.

Minutes later, the husband, Mr Nwogu Chinaka, reportedly developed  severe stomach ache and collapsed, while the wife, Omowunmi rushed him to a nearby hospital.

The wife, however, also became unconscious and fell at the gate of the hospital after she complaining of severe stomach pain too. The couple was treated in the same hospital.

Two security guards in the compound were brought to the hospital later in the day after Hounkpe and Amusu had fled.

The runaway cooks were later arrested by Police from the Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba.

Speaking with Punch, 34-year-old Hounkpe said he put the substance in the family’s soup to make everybody fall asleep so that valuables in the house could be easily carted away.

“I am from the Benin Republic. I came to Nigeria in 2007. I have always worked as a cook in Lagos. David was the agent who brought me to the couples’ house. He was the one who gave me the substance to put inside the soup. He told me the substance was a sleeping pill. The plan was that everyone would fall asleep.

“They wanted to steal gold and other valuables. I put the substance inside the vegetable soup. It was a powdery substance. I had worked with them for about a month. The couple did not offend us. They were to pay me N50,000 monthly. We just wanted them to sleep off. I ran to the Ogudu area after the incident to pick up another job. That was where I was arrested.”

Amusu, 33, added that the gang was about raiding the couples’ apartment when the duo became unconscious and was rushed to a hospital.

He said, “I was a former cook in the house. I was the one who brought Victor (Hounkpe). On the fateful day, when Victor finished cooking the soup, he called me to say the job had been done. But then, we learnt that the couple was rushed to a hospital after falling unconscious. So, we fled the area.”

The police added that the plan was to use Hounkpe as an insider to give free access to the robbery gang. Amusu was to lead the gang members into the compound. They added that the plan was foiled.

The CP, Aderanti, who paraded the suspects, advised residents of Lagos to always do background checks on people employed into their homes and places of work.

He said, “They have both confessed to the crime. The couple have been flown abroad for treatment. I want the public to always be careful about the people they bring into their homes. In Lagos, there is no place for criminals to hide.”

The other day I was in their surgery at one of the general hospitals, it reeked of blood and smelt like an abattoir. They were mopping blood with a mop stick. I went to check it out for a minor surgery on my hand. I was allowed access due to my 'connection'. Eventually ehn, the chief surgeon told me he had a decent practice in town. I went to do my surgery in his hospital ni o. Knowing me, he was disinfecting per second. Why couldn't he have upgraded the practice at the general hospital? Abi making those recommendations ain't part of his job description ni? It is well.

  38. I was one of the attending staff to the couple. Firstly, they didn't even know they were poisoned. She noticed the man drooling saliva and drowsy and assumed he was having a stroke and so she rushed him to hospital with a security guard to accompany her. Getting to the hospital, we noticed she was exceptionally sleepy as we were trying to get a history from her, also the security guard was seen to be deeply asleep too so we immediately figured out it was a drug poisoning and admitted them also as we were able to figure out they had all eaten the same soup prepared by the cook they had just employed. Later another security guard was brought in by our hospital administrator who had rushed over to the house with the police. We did some toxicology that revealed that they were all indeed poisoned and thank God cos it could have turned out much worse. They received all their treatment in nigeria and were discharged very hale and hearty

    1. That you have a cook doesn't mean you do not know how to cook. most women cook for their husbands themselves but let's the cook do the cooking for the people in the house, or he sets up for her, and she does the cooking. that's what my sis does. the cook is just there to assist....he never cooks what her hubby eats, well maybe make semo. ..lol

  41. Women are getting lazy. My neighbour is a housewife and has a cook, driver, nanny and housemaid. Iv never seen her enter kitchen before, and she's supposed to be a housewife. There is nothing wrong is having help, but it isn't healthy to have so many strangers living in ur house. Having grown men living in ur house in not just appropriate. you will invite pedophiles, mama water, all sorts. So many kids are being abused by so called cooks and houseboys and dey neva tell dere parents. You don't really know we'r deyv been or we'r dere coming from. Having just one person, preferably a matured older lady isn't bad. we need to stop inviting problems into our homes.

  44. why is it dat anytime smthn happens in naija, the victim usually a woman is easily blamed. u get raped, dey wld say why did u wear short skirt to visit a man. Ur husband cheats e.g Toke, its bcos she doesn't sit at home. Now the victim in dis case, the wife is being blamed. Why cant she cook ???
Do u realize even a wicked relative stayn with you can do dis, even ur nanny(a fellow woman) can do this. Naija we blame the woman for evrythn. Why don't we put blame on the evil ppl who committing dese crimes.
You can cook ur stew urself, and this can still happen.
Yes it's good to cook ur own food daily, but a lot of career women cant just do it all. You leave home at d crack of dawn and don't get home till very late. Some are in Abuja today,p/Harcourt tomorrow. This is 2015 women are not built for kitchen alone.
You think Ngozi okonjo or Late Dora Akunyili will be home 24/7 or a Bank MD or media mogul like Mo Abudu to serve dere hubbys meal 24/7. Why don't you wait till you get to dat level in ur career and think its possible.
The free time I have a wld rather use it monitoring dese helps and spending quality time with my family, monitoring kids school work dan taking the 3hrs to cook.
Each to his own, pls lets stop the BLAME GAME. It can happen to anyone, just make sure you investigate and PRAY abt any cook, nanny, driver ur employing.

    1. God bless you, why can't she cook for her husband? Very laughable.

Not everyone is a full time house wife, some people leave their homes as early as 5.30am and get home late.
Some women run very busy schedules and aren't available to cook everyday.

She may be sick, just had an operation, it could be anything.

When i was working in Lekki, some of my colleagues were coming from Ikorodu!!
What should they do? A few of them were the breadwinners.Should they resign? Then the same society will blame them for not adding value to their home.

I remember a particular one whose husband was a pastor, she was the breadwinner and it was her monthly salary that completed their property and sustained the family.
Resigning was no option though she lived in Ikorodu.

A number of people around me have cooks, helps, drivers and nannies, it is no big deal.

Your house girl could poison the food even if you cooked it yourself, your security guard or driver could set you up, your relative could set you up.

The question is how careful can one be??
