Bank Verification Number, BVN, is a CBN initiative to check fraud in the banking system by giving every customer in the Nigerian banking system a unique identification number that can be verified across all banks in Nigeria.
*Your BVN gives you a unique identity that can be verified across ALL Nigerian Banks (it is not peculiar to one Bank)
*Your Bank Accounts are protected from unauthorized access
*It reduces fraudulent activities on bank accounts
*Gives easy access to Banking operations
*Your BVN is accepted as a means of identification across ALL Nigerian Banks
*Registration in one bank covers all accounts the individual might have in all other banks
The deadline for registration is Tuesday, 30th June, 2015.
How far have you gone with your BVN registration and what challenges are you facing with it?
What happens to those in the diaspora with accounts?
Did my own but it was so stressful because of quene, kept trying for two weeks, finally did mine at another Diamond bank branch and it was so easy
ReplyDeleteI did my own a long time ago.
DeleteMadam Stella, Please help me tell ACCESS BANK that all the phone numbers they displayed in their customer call center are not working.
I am their newest customer.
I've done mine but I'm yet to receive the number. It's over a month now. I wonder why.
DeleteDid it at a diamond bank too.
Go to any diamond bank branch and give your details that's name and dob....you will get it
DeleteHello dear. Am sure u would have been given a ticket number. Just walk into any Diamond bank branches and show them your ticket number, you will be given BVN immediately
DeletePlease y'all living in disapora shud calm down oooo. CBN is working at something for you guys abroad. The last info I got ws that embassies, some foreign banks and institutions will handle it. I hvnt seen the list of d foreign banks or institutions. I guess they hvnt finalised. (from Diamond bank tho)
DeleteIf you are confused, kindly call your bank to find out whatsup other dan freting. Though, d Nigerian banks shud hv sent a mail to all customers to inform them of d alternative avenues.
I'm so lost. I have no idea what this is about. Make I go ask my bank oh!
DeleteI just went to my UBA branch and guess what,I am number 63. I was there by 6.30am ooooo. Today is Sanitation,so they will start work by 11am. I will jump the queue sha.
ReplyDeleteU're right,av done mine.
ReplyDeleteGood to knoe
ReplyDeleteAll banks have a type of account called the NRN (Non Resident Nigerians) now some Nigerians opened their accounts through this medium ie from diaspora, while we have some customers who opened their accounts in Nigeria and have relocated. Now for those whose accounts were opened as NRN, their accounts will not be restricted. All other NRN customers need to have their accounts profiled same way.
ReplyDeleteAll you need to do is provide an id, and your utility bill (notarised) or bank statement.
Well different banks have different policies but I blv this is a standard policy.
You can contact your customer care for further enquiries.
I sent an email to my bank and they said it's not possible. That I'll have to do mine when I come back to Naija. mehn! My Nigerian account is necessary oh. Don't even know what to do. BTW the bank is GTB.
DeleteFor Diamond bank, they sent a mail that those in Diaspora can do theirs at d embassy der. Some foreign banks and institutions have been designated to do the exercise for people too, I don't hv d list of d banks and inst. So ppl, pls go ask for Embassy.
DeleteThis is for Diamond bank customers. Dunno abt other banks
If u re a Diamond bank customer, please call the customer care no. 07003000000 for more info
DeleteMystique, My a/c is also with Gtb and they told me I'm exempt. You need to update ur account to nrn as someone mentioned earlier or make sure that the address on ur a/c is a foreign one. Gtb will send u some forms and ask for utilities/notarised bank statement from wherever u are. So no need to go to naija.
DeleteSo how do i get a BVN cos i live in Uk. I do not understand this at all .
ReplyDeleteChilax guys, for those abroad no ish just dnt fall victim to mails instructing u to click any link to do it online as those re fraudsters. Bvn has to b done physically as ur thumb prints re needed. Just ensure u migrate ur account to d unit of ur bank that handles customers abroad like my bank firstbank we call that unit diaspora banking. This is so they ll ve u on their data base as a customer abroad and u will b advised on how to go about it once cbn gives d directive. I repeat do not do it online, tell ur pple not to. Cos once u compromise ur online banking details such as ur token generated digits or ur password my dear OYO is ur case. Forget dat d mail came wit ur bank's logo if u click on d link it gives u another address besides any security mail or important mail from ur bank must come wut ur name on it. Pls do not be a victim of their blast
DeleteBvn is a continuous process just like sim registration. D deadline is just initial Gra Gra. Ask urself wat of doz that ll b opening accounts in future?
Deletethey should shift the date biko not everyone has done theirs. It ain't easy abeg, I've been to the bank twice but couldn't get mine done. You need to see the way pple fight over this bvn thing in banks. Make una shift date pls.
ReplyDeleteI've done mine and it didn't take long.
ReplyDeleteDespite the BVN of a thing, GTB will still ask u to come and pay N2550 to get a token for money transfer, whether local oo or international.
ReplyDeleteAbegi, make CBN go sit down jor.Who are mostly found wanting in bank fraud,is it not bank officials?
Lol. So your problem is 2k5.
DeleteYour type go like free things sha.
For crying out loud, what's 2k5 *a one time payment* for something that wld last u 4 7years.
Btw it ain't up2 2k5 it's 1k 150 or there about.
Lol @Elena.
DeleteThat's true. You'll pay once and use if for years.
But it's 2k5 though,or maybe it's just GTB.
#WhiteDiamondOut
The tokens are bought and imported..
DeleteThey are not manufactured by the bank na.lol
What's gonna happen to people that ain't in the country ? Is our money safe ? I'm tired of this bvn fingy ! How do they expect us to come home for verification when we have our business to run here ?
ReplyDeleteHmmm this rough play ,zenith bank we that dont live in Nigeria nko,is time i use my master card to with draw all my money here i no dey for this their long grammar
DeleteWhat do they expect people that are outta the country to register ? How can we come home for registration like we don't have work to do
ReplyDeleteFor those in diaspora I think their banks should create a platform for them online to do it, they will need to submit all the docs showing they live abroad and other identities showing they are Genuine
ReplyDeleteIf I hear say the banks do that!

Mystique abeg take it easy with your story!
Delete"Good day Sir/Madam,
We acknowledge the reciept of your mail,
The Bank Verification Number (BVN) project is an initiative aimed at improving overall security of transactions in the Nigerian Banking Industry. To ensure the benefits of this initiative are harnessed, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has stipulated a deadline of June 30, 2015 for enrolment of all banks’ customers
The CBN is yet to issue guidelines on the fresh registration of customers in Diaspora and the accounts will remain operational in the interim. For such customers who already have BVN from other banks, an online portal will soon be launched to enable validation of the number.
However customers abroad (who do not have BVNs from other banks) are advised to update your account information with the bank to enable us profile you as Non Resident Nigerian account holders as this will be the pre-requisite for the interim exemption.
Find attached the update form. Completed forms along with the bio-data page of your International passport and a notarised copy of a recent utility bill/ stamped copy of your Bank statement (within the last 3 months) stating your current residential address abroad will be sent to gtcare@gtbank.com. A bill can be notarised by a Notary Public, Nigerian Embassy, GTBank UK or a post office.
Thank you for choosing Guaranty Trust Bank.
Regards"
Shebi na GTB send me this message?
And I did as advised. Abeg take it easy with your story. Nigerians too lie!
Stellz the matter on this BVN thing is causing serious commotion in banking halls oo. Nigerians love last minute things. U need to see the queue for this BVN matter, plus the pushes nd blows that followed.
ReplyDeleteHopefully CBN works out something for diaspora customers and find a way to tie it to ur other banks; rather than you having to stil take the BVN number to them.
All the same it's a gud initiative if it wil really curb fraud. Happy Weekend Everyone!
Very Informative.
ReplyDeleteStella, please help me tell ACCESS BANK that all the phone numbers they displayed as on their customer care center is not working..
I am their newest customer.

DeleteI have not done mine.

DeleteMost nigerians just unecessarilly love given themselves stress. D bvn ish started early this year and as of wen i did mine, the banks were practically begging people to come register bt most of them were reluctant but now u need to see d queue lined up @d bank dis dire minute. Abeg i can't deal
ReplyDeleteIt's been on since last year, I got registered in November then got my card last month.
DeleteI did mine on the 16th of September last year and my BVN was sent to me on the 17th of September via sms.
DeleteRuby, liar. No bank has started giving cards. Liar
DeleteRuby, liar. No bank has started giving cards. Liar
DeleteRuby is not lying, ask your Bank for your card, have mine as well.
DeleteDon't call her a liar just cause u haven't seen the card yet. The cards are out, my friends have picked up theirs but I have not had time to go collect mine as I did it last year in a different state.
DeleteShe is» not lying I have» mY BVN card alreadY from Stanbic ibtc bank
DeleteShartap anonymous osiso!!
DeleteIf you did yours when she did,you will be in possession of your card with your number and name boldly printed on it..depending on your bank though!!
This is how people swear on things they are not sure of here.
Iphie don't mind those weaklings that hide under anonymous to spew trash. If they had done theirs at the inception, they won't be running around now for it.
DeleteAnon shut the hell up. She is not lying. The cards of those that did last year nd early this year are ready. Av got mine from Zenith. It has my name, BVN number nd thumb prints boldly in it. Pls ask ur bank for urs, pending when u did it

ReplyDeleteThey should extend it mbok.
Nawaoo, only did for one account and I need to the the number to my other banks for update. Chai I will do It sha on Monday.
ReplyDeleteI tot one bvn covers all accounts? Someone put me thru.

ReplyDeleteI went to the Eco bank somewhere in wuse yesterday to submit my BVN, the lady in charge at the customer care unit told me to check back on Monday because they were OUT OF FORMS. Stella forms that can be PHOTOCOPIED o and all I had to do was just fill the form and waka. Just imagine. And to think I took excuse from

Why don't dey extend it tll friday, I havnt done mine yet, crowd in the bank ws too much
ReplyDeleteSorry. They will fleeze your account
DeleteOK
ReplyDeleteIts a good initiative I must say.
ReplyDeleteThe challenges: I registered at the stanbicIBTC bank in my town but after two months, I was surprised to get Sms from them to go to their Ile Ife (Osun state) branch (another state different from where I reside ) to get my no, I dint even bother to disturb myself, I just withdrew all I had with them and 'fashied' them, abeg their wahala don too much
Later registered @gtbank and got the best customer service ever!
For those in diaspora, there will always be concession now at least that was what happened when CBN did account update 4 years ago.
Yes oooo, GT bank, best customer service ever. Plus they have good initiatives which other banks copy thereafter.
DeleteGTB...best customer service?? If I hear. I beg to disagree.
DeleteYou are right about the initiative and innovation part.
Nothing like deadline Stella.
ReplyDeleteIt's gonna be an ongoing thing.
The deadline ish was becos Nigerians refused to turnup for the verification hence the threat.
But banks will definitely start asking for the VN to carry out any transaction.
End time things
DeleteHmmm,may God help us o
DeleteThank o sis Stella what happens to those in diaspora???
ReplyDeleteI av done mine o.
ReplyDeleteDid mine since February. .didn't even know it was something serious. .just went to d bank one day and dey asked if I've heard about BVN. .I said no and I was directed to where I did mine. .just heard now that it's serious and that those who have done in one bank and have an account in another has to take d BVN there for registration. .wish they told me then and now I have to go on a long queue just to register it. .
ReplyDeleteI have long registered and gotten my card. Nigerians and their last minute approach to things will make it seem like a herculean task.
ReplyDeleteI have long registered and gotten my card. Nigerians and their last minute approach to things will make it seem like a herculean task. Those in the diaspora should go to any Nigerian embassy, I am sure they will get answers there.
ReplyDeleteI've not gotten mine lah.
ReplyDeleteMy challenges were, the long queues at my bank, coupled with the fact that they were shorthanded of staff.
Just two people at the branch of Ecobank in my area.
Hopefully, by Monday, i'll be able to get mine, without wasting more than six hours of my day.
#WhiteDiamondOut
i have an account, but i live in canada presently, lots of my savings is in there, they should not tell me nonsense when i return,BVN rubbish...
ReplyDeleteNoted
ReplyDeleteMost they put dead line to do it
I haven't done mine but will sure do it on Monday but I don't believe there's anything like closure whatsoever. Nigerians and their way of playing tricks to make people turn up
ReplyDeleteNo tym for that noW,would try to do mine wen I have something to do at d banK.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm I was misinformed hence did it twice so I'm at a fix . Right now I don't have any as it stands. What do I do?
ReplyDeleteI have called my bank several times concerning this BVN registration and people in diaspora that have bank accounts. They keeo saying CBN has nit given them any directive for people living outside the country. I just jejely commot all my money from the bank with my Atm card. No time for stories abeg.
ReplyDelete666. "A form of financial verification number.."
ReplyDeleteWe have to look at this BVN thing all round.
@SHB
BVN wahala.did mine at diamond bank. eco bank is full of scrap.
ReplyDeleteDid mine since january.
ReplyDeletePls I register with eco bank I was given a number and was told they will send me msg. Since 2 months ago now I HV not receive any msg. Pls if it closes at the end of the month I'm I save or I'm I just like those that HV not done it. Because I'm in a village n eco bank is not close by. In fact can't make it to the bank this month. Pls I'm I save?
ReplyDeleteNa wa o,when u copy from naira land at least change d title.
ReplyDeleteThis Bvn is rubbish, the true fraudsters in high places will not do it. They keep using the masses to chop money. The people behind the Bvn thing have chopped their money and gone. I have seen people with same details and they have 2 different BVNs from 2 different banks. If you don't do it, nothing will happen to your accounts.
ReplyDeleteIf you are a joint signatory, and the main account holder lives outside the country, the joint signatory can register the BVN? Abi?
ReplyDeleteI guess I travelled to nga at the right time I did mine ,very easy and straight forward .
ReplyDeleteU did not post my comment cos truth is bitter. As long as u read it am ok.
ReplyDeleteI made a mistake when I registered my bvn can I correct it?
