Protesters Storm National Assembly, Demand Death Penalty For Corruption

Some protesters, tagged Voice of the Voiceless, stormed the National Assembly on Wednesday and demanded a legislation that would prescribe death penalty as punishment for corruption in the country just like Indonesia, China and others.

According to them,  there was no way Nigeria would made progress if corruption in public office was not brought under serious control.

In addition, the group wrote separate letters to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara.

In the letter to the House, which was signed by the National Coordinator of the group, Mr. Oliver Ezeala, the protesters wrote,

“Corruption, as we are all aware of, has eaten so deep into the fabric of this great nation and we are strongly advocating the death penalty to anybody who is found guilty of corrupt practices, no matter how highly-placed such an individual is in the society.

“Nigeria has tried every other measure of deterrent but to no avail.

“We want this great nation to toe the path of countries such as Indonesia, Singapore, China and other world powers who have achieved so much developmental strides as a result of their zero tolerance for corruption.”

“We believe that he will fight this our common hydra-headed enemy to a complete standstill,” the letter added.

    1. Yinmu. Even if the law is passed...they won't follow suit. The one passed that a murderer should be murdered is having little or no effect, much more sentencing a corrupt person to death. They won't even investigate the said corruption, so the death penalty is story for the gods. Have they finished convicting the cases pending? Abeg let's request for a more realistic punishment. Even jail term isn't given to them...na to come die go work? Yinmu again

    2. Na real ki la gbe ki le ju.
They should propose a more reasonable punishment, say 25 years imprisonment with no option of fine.

Most countries have abolished the death penalty for a number of reasons.Though in rare circumstances, the death sentence is just ideal.

  8. Yes oh Stella death penalty, if only it wud be applied to these corrupt politicians it wud be cool, am sure our country wud be a better nation, imagine our senators allocate such huge amount of money to just wardrope allowance while minimum wage is 18000, who re we deceiving, will they even allow their sons and daughters work in the civil service commission? That's a big NO, so why don't they make the civil service commission earn like oil workers.

Most of them earning much as politicians just have school cert, then they pay masters degree peanut, this country sucks, wonder when the change we desire wud come

  11. people should be careful on what they say, the group advocating for death penalty on corrupt practices i know u mean well for the country but the suggestion is a harsh one. Nigerians were all condenming Indonesia for execuing Okwudili Uyatanze & co and people are now advocating for adoption of death penalty as a means of reducing corrupt practices? It is a no no for me please, there are many ways to kill a rat, death penalty my foot!!!

  14. In full support, if you don't want to die, don't risk it. The fear of being executed will set some people straight, while the hard-hardened ones would continue. But the law will definitely send a message that the war against corruption is serious. We need to cleanse this country of this menace. Every other measure had failed, why not this?

  15. Penalty for corruption should be kirikiri not death plzzzz.I can't support that.

  16. Why are we so barbaric and animal like? Instead of demanding for functioning infrastructures, e.g excellent education sector, health care system, transportaiton system, building of agricultural industries, e.t.c implementation of basic amenities in all 36 states e.g 24hr electricity, fresh, clean water running through pipes (ikogosi spring is still there for goodness sake), the request is for death penalty?. How does that request show any iota of developmental progress?

In terms of reference, I think the west got it right, are right and are still right! We can learn more than a thing or two from them.

We need to get into the habit of listing out all the individual issues instead of clothing it all with the corruption veil.

  24. I'm wondering how Buhari is going to fight corruption when he is surrounded by very corrupt people. He is just 1 against 1,000. I'm sure that by now, he is seeing the enormity of the corruption he set out to fight. I hope he is not overwhelmed yet.

This voice of the voiceless sef, how many of them are innocent in their little capacity? Some of them are forming fight corruption because they don't have the power and the means. The small voice they have, they are already demanding death penalty. They should focus on ways to make the government pay attention to what is most crucial to them- come up with a healthcare plan/proposal, come up with one or two critical infrastructure projects and ask the government to fund etc. then protest when they don't

  25. That's too much.send them to jail instead
