PLEA TO DELTA STATE GOVERNMENT

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa you just got your first public memo....

''Hi Stella, please help me post this for i am depressed, upset, angry and disappointed.
The new Delta State government has decided to suspend the employment of almost 2000 staffs done by the ex governor of Delta State for reasons best known to them.

First they claimed they wanted to investigate the last employment that took place in May2015 , then it was they can't afford to pay salaries.
They have suspended us from working for the next 3months, then after that, we will know the out come of their decision.

Now my story.
We (including me) all responded to the recruitment ad posted on delta state site 2013.... I applied in January 2014, waited and waited for employment but it never came till February 2015 when the ex governor decided to grace us with the job. I had moved on to other jobs and am sure it was the same with others who applied.  I was abroad when i was called one evening saying my name was out and i needed to be in Asaba Delta state the next day.

I didn't quit my job yet o, i lied i had an emergency back home in Nigeria, flew in the next day to Lagos, flew to Asaba.

I was told i needed to stay a few days to do interview and verification of documents. I didn't have anyone to stay with, so i stayed in a hotel. Few days turned into 2weeks all in a hotel. They said i had to resume immediately and i was like how? Wont i get time to go pack my things etc. I sha travelled back, quit my GOOD PAYING JOB, packed what i could and sold the rest.

I was back to resume fully, everyone was congratulating me saying ohh government job is the best, most secured till you retire. My mother who was the main reason for me taking this job was super happy.

I rented a one bedroom apartment, managed to furnish , bought a big generator as light in Asaba is 5%..

Let me cut this story short, i have worked almost 5 months, invested my time, emotions, finances(we work without pay for 5months then you get paid in bulk), i just turned 30, thinking ok i have a new job, about to start a business, settling down should be next.

The new Governor comes in May and the 1st thing he does is suspend all of us, and now am suppose to wait 3 months for him to decide what he thinks is right.
In the meantime, what am i suppose to do, i still haven't been paid, am back to square one, back to the job hunting market, no money as i have been living off my personal savings, am stuck with a house i don't need as Asaba isn't a town of many job opportunities expect government which obviously isn't employing.

Please Delta State government, its unfair to keep us hanging for 3months, what are we suppose to do? stay at home, moved on with our lives then you are call us back again and re say you cant pay salaries.

I just want to know what the hell am suppose to do now...???????
PS. TRY AND PAY US WHAT YOU OWE
THANKS. Depressed suspended civil servant.

Please forgive my errors, typed this in tears''.

HMMMMMM!!!!

    3. Pls no one should blame Ifeanyi Okowa for this, what did Uduaghan do in Delta state? NOTHING, 8 good years and Asaba is still a village, no light, no road, no nothing and at the very end of his tenure he employed over 2000 people for who to pay them? Nd with which money? Only God in heaven will punish him and Ex Abia state governor Orji. Nne u quit ur job abroad for a state job? Not even federal, na u sabi, Biko leave my dear Okowa Alone.

    6. Queen what is special about a Federal job? How is it different from a state job? I hate when ppl always talk of Federal, Federal job! Are u sure a Federal civil servant earns more dan a state civil servant? I work as a lecturer in a state university, And I know how much my Federal counterparts of earn. I even earn more. I repeat: I earn more! Government job is Government job! Be it State or Federal.

Others might not be as lucky as u r to afford staying abroad and even having a well paid job there.... y did u return is my question? y did u quit ur former job just to come for a job u and I know has no leverage? I am seriously seriously blaming u for ur own predicament. For others who are involved, I pray and wish dis is resolved....

I am a proud Nigerian and it pains me to say this but Nigeria is not the kind of country u make that kind of sacrifice for...unless d job over there is not as well paying as his making it sound....resign a well paying job abroad for a govt job?? Wen is not as if they want to name u DG of a ministry, least of all in delta state?? I am an urhobo babe ooo Bt mehnnnn unless they want to make me a director in one of their ministries, I will not even relocate from Lagos to delta.....how much more from abroad. Now see! 13. Nwanyi asaba did u say d salary isnt more than 54k? Chineke! Wot? That's very small. Ehen I didn't know o. But guess people still want it cos of d job security and growing on d job.

      Delete
    14. What me I'm even thinking is the long term benefit of being a civil servant. I can't really blame the poster for quitting her job abroad to take the job. Not everyone who has access to live and work abroad want to spend the rest of their lives there. It's never an easy decision to make. I've had to make the same decision a few years back, the only difference is that I didn't come home to work for the govt but myself.
That said, it's another thing to be retained as a civil servant for many years, and another hassle to get ur salary intact monthly, then the biggest issue is after retirement, will they pay your gratuity or retirement funds?
So really, one has to give it a critical thought. Everyday we read about pensioners who die while waiting for their allowance without luck. Frustration every where, after dedicating your entire life to civil service. But maybe the new government will change all that and it'll be a thing of joy once again to be a civil servant.

I know many civil servants who do not rely on their salary. Most of them have side jobs and the flexibility of their job allows them to make extra income and travel at will. Which is why there are ghost workers.
Some are also living very large because they cut corners and operate side deals within the ministry. This is what makes the job attractive, not because the pay is good. It is only the smart ones therein that make it big as civil servants, hence, those who see and envy them also want to work with the government.
Poster just try to look for another job, because waiting for them will be waiting for hunger to kill u o.

  16. Na wao poster, what kind of job do u have to quit to come and take a state job? All the money u spent on logistics would have started u a good business if the intention was to relocate. Truth be told, many people will still loose their jobs with the way Nigeria is going. If u still have anything left just gather urself together and find something else to do. Naija is tight now, I don't even encourage anyone waiting for a government job this time around bcos it may never happen, going by the financial situation in the country.

The fraud that trailed the emergence of the suspended employees is appalling. So many persons applied for the job but while they were patiently waiting for the written test and interview, names were published by the state civil service after collecting monies ranging from 800k-1.5million naira.

Dear poster, I feel your pain but the prayer of other hurt citizens was answered by the action of Okowa. Kindly meet Dr Teshola or Mr Charles for a refund if you parted with any cash prior to your appointment.

Anyhoo, I'm of the opinion that the civil service makes one redundant. To each his own

    6. Isn't this the same thing going on in Edo State now? They are doing mass recruitment for civil servants. I saw it on TV, where a bunch of people were filling forms and waiting to be interviewed. I think this occurred after the supposed strike that happened. Perhaps they want to fill the slots of the aggrieved workers. Someone should check it out.

I hardly pray for politicians to win elections but I did bc I believed that for Dr Chris Kwakpovwe to include it as a prayer point, then you must be a good man. Pls, don't increase the suffering of the people. Get some fiscal advisers to suggest best ways to tackle this issue. Retrenching them after 5 months and without pay will be heartlessness on your part. At worst, pay them for the months of work they have put in

Poster, you have to find somethjng else in the meantime. Look around you. Start small. There must be something you can be doing ATM. Opportunities abound.

    2. But what if the government realised that they cannot afford to keep these many staff with monthly pay, isn't it better to downsize their workforce and religiously pay those retained? Can't u see the crisis ongoing in some states now, the problem is that they keep more staff than is needed and it's affecting the state government account. Esp those states that do not generate their own money but rely on the fed govt. Little job with excess staff strength. Doesn't make sense

I lost my dad and my mom was all alone, so taking the job was me killing two birds with one stone. No one foresees things like this happening. I made friends with people who even quit there bank jobs for this. And unfortunately its government policy to get paid after four months of working, and they can't be sued because our employment contract states we are on probation for 2years before permanent employment. And trust me I tot it was destiny, imagine applying for a job over 2yrs and suddenly your called to resume. I assumed it was a sign to relocate back to Nigeria but I guessed wrong...lol . 33. Dear stella, permit me to say the poster lied in this post.
They got the job in April, most were still doing their biometrics and data capturing when the new government came in. Those posted to my office ( ministry of works) were still carrying their files around and none had been approved.

I get it the poster's point, yes they were asked to leave nut it was for certain reasons which we all approve
    1. The past government had smuggled in 4 different sets of newly recruited staff.
There's no advert, no interview, you just wake up one morning, get to the office and see people with appointment letters coming to your desk.
    2. the last recruitment was done to fix Uduaghan's aids into the system. ( poster, deny this and may fire consume you for lying)
    3. The appointment was bought with money! Some paid as much as 750,000 and others close to 1 million naira..
    4. As a result of point 3 above, people from across the niger ( Anambra and Enugu states) paid and their names were included in the list.

I say this boldly because I live in Asaba, we all know the true story.
Ifeanyi Okowa says he had to let them go to investigate the stories behind their appointment and also because Delta State treasury is EMPTY!!!!
In His words " Why will you employ more hands when there is little or nothing left to pay those already in the system"?

    I rest my case.
    Kindly forgive my typos.

People who applied following the legal procedure didn't even knw when names where published. I think I knw d poster, she did her m.sc in UK and refused coming back until d mom arranged her 2 become a special adviser 2 one of d commissioners with intentions that b4 d commissioners tenure is over dey'll switch her 2 state civil service and YES! 34. poster it is sad when you are at the receiving end of any predicament.....sadly some people were cheated for you to get your job....alot of these govt jobs do not follow due process and that's the gospel truth.....anyone who has worked in the civil service will tell you its not strange to collect your 1st salary after 3 months of starting work and that's because of the bureaucracy in the system...it is only in parastatals that the trend is reduced or non existent.....the civil service of then is not the same now and that talk of job security is long gone because politics has now so influenced the way things are done....i work with a federal parastatal and work security was a reason i joined the service about 13 years ago but in this time retrenchment or down sizing has taken place like 4 times in that period....so where is the job security? if your job was not gotten through the back door i.e u paid to be employed, did not do interview and given letter cos of who u know etc then be ready for any eventuality....i however pray you don't loose out entirely...God help you

  35. Poster you should have a explained for people well what you mean by well paying job abroad. I know if you really have a good job you wont bother coming back but you wouldnt want to explain things well for people back there at home, me too I am abroad too and I have your type of 'well paying job' of which at the end of the month the salary in naira equivalent is like 200k. I a not married neither do I have a girlfriend, also I dont drink, I dont have a car, I use the public bus but could you believe I dont save up to 30k per month. I would like to ask SDKers is this a well paying job?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. So what do you do with the 200k?

      Delete
    2. The money is recycled into the system. He'll pay his bills and will be taxed accordingly. Thereafter, whatever is left is not enough to sustain him, talk less of having a lot to save.
People abroad who hold a good paying job usually think that they are "balling" ...not until they realize that after so many years of work, they have little or nothing to show for the hard work. Even those who tend to verge into medical practice where it is considered the highest paying field, you'll just realise that the 'mansion" u pay to live in, that u hardly sleep in it for 5days straight in a month, because u are always at work and doing overtime to get more money. So what time do u have to enjoy the luxury u pay for??
I can't tell u how many of my family and friends have been in this situation, that they've had to leave the so called good paying job to relocate to Nigeria. At least to start a business with monies saved, and then enjoy it... while u can have maids do ur chores and wait around on u.
Living abroad is overrated and isn't that perfect as many have been saying on this thread. You have to check and balance the downside of it too.. You may think u have the best job in a country that provides job security.. but do u have a life outside that job? Do you have enough money saved? That's the problem

    3. Lol... God will Bless you for this comment. I keep telling people in Nigeria, 'who no go no go know'. The urge to come here... I school in the UK and I am counting my days down to go back to Nigeria. I work my complete 20 hours per week and so at the end of the month, I get equivalent 200K. What do I do? A lot of plate washing and cleaning, that's what most of my friends here do. Luckily, we don't pay heavy tax as students. I just do this to maintain myself, not because my father didn't give me money, but I love hustling and I am a proud earner too. Anyway, to the matter, this 'well paying job' make una no mind the poster o, it is only well paying when converted to naira. Those who pay heavy tax and bills can't save nada at the end of the month....any job that made this poster leave abroad to Nigeria is either cleaning toilet, washing plates or cleaning and caring for the elderly, anything within the line.Take it from me. ............silence

  37. poster sad what your going through but as a civil servant who have been in the system a while alot of these recent recruitment have been very questionable. In my parastatal the same thing happened and their suspension was even for 6 months..you sit in the office everyday and you see people come to resume that they have been employed, nobody heard when they were interviewed or knew when names were shortlisted... you work in a place and you cant even invite your own people to compete for a vacant position.... when you check they are either a brother, sister, inlaw or son/ daughter to someone in govt.nothing wrong in helping your people when in power but let the recruitment process be open for all who are privy to that vacant position compete and the best people chosen..job security in the civil service is not like before because of too much govt interference..wish you all the best but if your recruitment was not properly done is it bad for the governor to want to clean up the system? i will not judge you because if you are at the receiving end not getting the job cos you knew nobody you will be happy the system is being sanitized but on the other hand if you are employed and your job is taken from you you cant be happy..i can only just wish you the best and pray Gods will be done in your life....

  40. Beats me how you left a job abroad for a state govt job. except it was an odd job you were unto abroad like a janitor or waitress that is even sometimes preferable to the so called "government job" or do u by abroad mean Niger republic or Somalia?

  41. First off, Poster, I am sorry for what you have to go through. That said, I'd like to begin by stating that we all know how State-owned jobs are gotten in Delta state -- I'm a Deltan, so I know. And in the last few years, particularly under Uduaghan's reign, it was all backyard-business.

Now, don't get me wrong, I am not condemning anyone here. if you got the connection, then use it. I'm just clarifying things here.

Now as to the matter of Okowa asking newly employed workers to go on a three-month break while they do some 'checking', he is on his right. He probably wants to check irregularities and those without them, shouldn't worry.
Besides, I heard, from a good source, that dear Uduaghan left teh coffers empty as he strolled out fo the Government house.
If he did indeed, how then can Okowa handle the wages of workers? My younger sister received her May salary on the 16th of June.

My point, Poster, is there is fire on the mountain in Delta state and it wasn't Okowa who set it... the question is, will he be able to put it out?

I hope something better comes your way. Free advice, if you ever make it out of this country, don't come back. It's a mini hell-hole.

  44. Even governor Uduaghan suspended the whole exercise when the news came that people paid 1.5 million naira. Pay your 1.5 mill, come and collect your appointment letter after 3 days. As such, there was no list of those employed because they were still in the process of pay and collect when they were busted! Uduaghan hurriedly tried to force in people last minute after more than a year the advert was placed. He just sprung us that surprise of a list of 1800 people short listed for interview! As for the others, I pity them because they had worked for a little more than a year, collecting salaries, although they were smuggled in with no advert placed, no interview done!

  45. You shouldn't have left your job abroad to pick up an appointment in Nigeria, but now what's the way forward? I think while waiting for the three months, get a part time job that can foot your bills. All the best.

  46. You left your GOOD JOB abroad to come take a government in Nigeria that your parents organised for you bah?!

Stella, let us who know the truth break-it-down for you. The new governor suspended the entire thing (AND HE WAS RIGHT TO DO SO) because the recruitment process was greatly flawed. We applied and were told we will be contacted for the next stage (written test). My sister, next thing we know, people have been shortlisted for the jobs! When did the test hold? When did the interview hold? It was shocking and devastating for hundreds of people.

I don't mean to come across as mean but girl, the wind don blow. Sorry your a** wasn't well covered!

  47. Stella you be among the Uduaghan haters. I send informations to you to correct some of these things you refuse to publish. I work in the commission and live in Asaba. I am going to resend the two parts again. Asaba development and the employment issues.
