Maggi Noodles Withdrawn In East African Supermarket

East Africa's biggest supermarket chain has withdrawn Nestle's Maggi noodle brand from its shops in five countries, amid concerns over food safety.
Nakumatt says the noodles have been withdrawn from shops in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and South Sudan, after demands from a Kenyan consumer group.

The group was reacting to a partial ban in India, where regulators described the product as "unsafe and hazardous".

Nestle maintains that Maggi noodles are completely safe.
Maggi noodles are very popular in Kenya, and the company's seasoning cubes, which are not involved in the current controversy, are widely used in West African cuisine.

The Consumer Federation of Kenya (Cofek), which launched the complaint, says that Kenyan supermarket chains Tuskys and Naivas have also agreed to voluntarily withdraw the noodles.

Kenya's Bureau of Standards, the official government watchdog for product standards, has now issued a "verbal recall" for the noodles, according to a statement on the Cofek website.
Cofek has also asked Kenya's port authority to prevent further imports of the product.

Indian food regulators said that tests revealed high lead levels in the product, describing it as "unsafe and hazardous", leading to a ban on the product in several states.

Nestle says that since Indian regulators raised their concerns, it has tested a batch of 1,000 Maggi noodles in the country and found "lead levels.. well within the limits specified by food regulations".

  4. Lead as in LEAD? They must be joking. I hope that brand hasn't entered nigerian market. They should let us enjoy our NAFDAC certified noodles. No body wants any repeat of history. I remember when indomie caused something bad but NAFDAC rose up to correct. Who wan die?

    1. That brand was in the nigerian market in the 1990s, infact I ate maggi two minute noodles as kid, there was no indomie noodles then. I don't know why it left the nigerian market. I didn't even know it was still produced in other countries till now

I was arguing with a colleague yesterday about this.... she said Linda is better in that area and I just confirmed it myself this morning. It's very bad, people refresh the page for comments not only stories. I would appreciate if you would look into this late enabling of replies. BTW I thought there was a certain percentage requirement of lead in noodles

  17. The sooner Africans stop eating these death-sentenced processed foods from abroad whatever they may be....indomie or whatever, the better for them. Don't Africans use their brains for goodness' sake? Don't they wonder why all these diseases are always prominent in these countries more than in Africa? Don't they ask what is causing diseases such as cancer and other weird abnormalities in countries such as America? Does it need to be spelled out before Africans will get it? People continue joking with your lives and eating indomie and whatnot. You better do your research about population control. It's not just by bombing people and shooting that people die. One more thing, people abroad are scramming for natural organic foods that Africa has in abundance because to buy it there is expensive. Then Africans are scramming for processed foods that have been killing people for decades and in some cases have been linked to cancer and all sorts. Keep playing with your lives

    1. Abeg let's hear word! Are you not African? Isn't there a nicer way to communicate your point? Trust me Africans and Nigerians in particular are more health cautious than you think.
