Kano State Set To Implement Anti-Divorce Law

Kano state Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on Friday said the state government would enact a law that will address increasing divorce rate in the state.

According to The Nation reports, he made the assertion while meeting with some agencies, including Hisbah guards, vigilance groups, Vehicle Inspection Officers and civil society organisations at Coronation Hall, Kano Government House, yesterday.

Ganduje directed the state Hisbah Board to discuss the issue with Islamic scholars and other contemporary Islamic students with a view to advising government on how the law would be implemented in Islamic perspective and how to implement it.

The governor, who described the increase in divorce rate in the state as worrisome, noted that government would take appropriate action to stop the menace.

Anti divorce?Forcing people who dont want to be together anymore to be together?Thats wrong!
He should look for a way to encourage those willing to stay married or rather he should get busy with developing his state....my two cents!

  2. If the law is implemented, it will be favorable to only the Islamic men cause they can get married to as many women they please.
Islamic laws always favour their men...smh.
Btw, I thought Nigeria is a secular state. Why then should laws be implemented with Islamic views?

    1. Olodo contradicting herself. How will an anti-divorce law be of benefit to men who want to marry many wives? Also, the Islamic law only allows a man to have four wives at a time.
Dear Stella, if you live among northerners, you will know they take divorce with so much levity. Some get divorced for silly reasons and in the end, the children are affected. Some men who already have four wives will divorce some or all just to have a taste of a new woman even though the same Islam that has permitted them to marry more than one makes it obligatory on them to treat the women fairly with the fear of God. Some even get married with the intention of getting divorced soon which contradicts Islam. I believe their government is trying to reduce the number of street children contributing to the degradation of their society because of parents who don't have the common sense of holding their homes together and bring up upright citizens.

    1. Well the anti-divorce law is a double edged sword in the senses that people who are forced to marry each other cannot break free which is bad. Another negative factor is the fact that loyal spouses cannot break free from partners who cheat without remorse and this puts their life in danger as cheating spouses can import an STD into the family.

A positive fact is that such a law can keep families together because of the children; its important that families remain intact because broken families lead to broken children who eventually lead to a broken society.

People who want to marry must will be forced to take their commitment seriously before they say 'I do'.

  13. Is this the most important problembin kano for him to tackle. If he passes anti-divorce law, then he needs to pass an anti wife-killing law because if a man is tired of his wife and you say they shouldn't separate, one day he'll kill her. All these agenda-less "comechop" politicians.

  14. Talk about being clueless in this day and age. How about expanding anti-poverty programs with viable, sustainable benefits for the peope, especially, women? This is part of what happens when you start marrying off ten year old girls at a time they should be developing their economic potential thru education and skills acquisition. Sooner than later, the girl-brides grow up and want more from their lives while many of their aged mallams cannot handle the changes. Everything considered, how does Kano State intend to force marriage down the throat of an adult partner who wants out?

  15. Hausa people and the way they bring Islam into matters, I want to see how they ld implement the law "in an Islamic perspective" when there are clear provisions for divorce in Islam. May God help us all

  16. I dont think anti-divorce laws means forcing them to be together, but may be stiff laws that'll discourage divorce and force intending divorcees to work on their marriage rather than opting for the easy way out. Till then...

  19. Why won't there be alarming rate of divorce. When their women where hijab from head to toe and only shows bleached/ pan caked faces. Having k legs, bow legs, smelling pussies, rashes skins, three or more colours etc. their men don't see what they will enjoy in their ladies until they are married. So if you marry a lady that uses hijab from head to toe and has k legs with Olympus breast and you didn't know all this until you are married how won't you divorce her?
