Concerning a statement made by veteran actor Wale Adenuga in an interview last week, where he asserted that the Igbos have taken over Nollywood, Nollywood Actor Emeka Ike has fired back at him.
Another succinct point made by the veteran actor which irked Emeka Ike was this..." When somebody claims he founded Nollywood, Oga Bello, and of course I, cannot be part of that. When I produced my first film in 1983, Emeka Ike and his Nollywood people were still in school.
They started their own film-making in 1992 and they are claiming that 1992 was the beginning of film-making in Nigeria”
In a fresh interview with Vanguard, Emeka Ike bares his mind and reacts to the assertions made by Wale Adenuga.
Read excerpts below....
"When they talk, they should know that the man they talk to, is a very intelligent man and not a riffraff or an idiot."
"I am properly educated, an Engineer is not a man you take for granted; I am painstaking in my decision and I am very concise in what I say."
"Let him not think it is Uhuru here. Before Wale Adenuga opened his studio, I had opened my studio at Adeniran Ogunsanya. Before he started making cinematographers, I had made several cinematographers in my office at Adeniran Ogunsanya."
"The Nollywood you know today is not the one that cropped up from Hilbert Ogungbe. Nollywood came about with the sales, marketing and multiplication of CDs. The Igbos got more involved by their investments. The Igbos did what they had to do, whether good or not, it has given us the platform."
"They provided the medium for conveying our movies to every home. After a while, the Igbo people decided to go into movie-making themselves."
"It is wrong to start saying who started Nollywood, who did this and who did that. It’s not a good way to go for a man of his pedigree. When he made his movie, nobody knew him, just like we made our movies when nobody knew us. The platform has been created by both the Yoruba and Igbo marketers in Idumota and he started making it more than even most of us that created the image that he took advantage of."
"I’m personally working towards galvanising Kannywood, Nollywood and the Yoruba movies together. We cannot be divided, we should have a central working system. For you to now start dividing, it is backward for a man of that pedigree.
He should keep making good movies which we are proud of."
"We should be responsible Nigerians not just make a way for our own juniors. If Wale Adenuga Junior will not suffer in life, what happens to other people’s Juniors?"
How come Nollywood is predominantly Igbo?
"You could be right about that but that’s not to say that’s how Nollywood should be. When he (Wale Adenuga) made his movie, it was just a one-off. Several movies were made even before he made his own, that we didn’t know about. In that same 1993, Amaechi Obi and I made a movie that never saw the light of day just like his own didn’t.
But what we are talking about is history, pedigree. How did they start packaging this whole thing for export? How did investors get involved? How did all these become a budding industry? It is not impossible that Wale Adenuga would have made an unattractive movie. Let’s stop these tribal issues," he said.
*Interview excerpts from Vanguard *
... But is it not true?
ReplyDeleteThey keep being intimidated by the igbo's.
DeleteOoooooh but who cares! We also have yoruba movies.
Where did Wale Adenuga bring Igbo into anything? He said emeka ike said he formed Bollywood in 1992. He can not be part of nollywood because he was making movies before the existence of Nollywood. Which is true. The top Nollywood movies today are Yoruba produced. The likes of kunle Afolayan, Funke Akindele and more recently AY's movies raked all the movie awards. Igbo's continue to gloat over nothing.
DeleteDude,i don't reply to blogs but u are the dumbest person I know for today though... and stop being tribalistic...u should be more educated than dat..and secondly..do your researches well..bye
DeleteOk oh! Emeka Ike actually made sense. It's not about who started first, they should all be focused on making the industry move forward.
ReplyDeleteOne thing is for sure, the igbo's are very shrewd and witty when it comes to business and investment, That's why they've taken over nollywood, because they took risk and invested in nollywood, That's why an Igbo man is the exotic car dealer of Floyd mayweather junior in LA, Mr Obi Okeke, CEO of fusion motors.
ReplyDeleteYour comment will be visible after approval
What does mayweather's car dealer have to do with nollywood???? Is it cos igbo was mentioned.
DeleteThe reference is to stress how industrous igbos can be. They are very good with marketing, branding, networking and creating multiple investors for any product. This is a gift. Na so people dey fail exam. Use your brain and think about more connections. English essay test booted....
DeleteI love the English nollywood whether they are more of the igbos or not, who cares, afterall Yorubas have their own wood. Emeka made a vital point, I still like Yoruba movies sometimes too,but I prefer English nollywood, that's the Asaba, Enugu oweri movies o,not those cinema ones, got no time for their fakeness sometimes
ReplyDeleteHahahahah Yorubawood
DeleteGosh, when would this tribal difference stop in Nigeria.
ReplyDeleteEmeka abeg comot for road...make I pass.....hop u hv paid ur house rent. ...
ReplyDeleteLol is he owing house rent ?
DeleteU don chop today?
DeleteHe has,,,have u paid ur blog rent?
DeleteHe has,,,have u paid ur blog rent?
DeleteEmeka Ike is so right... both Yolly, kanny and nolly, all d wood na same...
ReplyDeleteIrrelevant talk....
ReplyDeleteI use to watch nollywood as a teenager, then I grew up
ReplyDeleteAm just disappointed with the nonsense this agbaya called Wale spewed....
ReplyDeleteWhy are Yorubas so jealous of Igbos??...this is exactly what I see everyday in this Lagos with their nonsense juju wey no dey get me...
You see why am screaming for Biafra!!!...
Oh God make it happen!!!!...
Stella, you swallowed my comment on that desperate Nmasinachi post...no wahala...
They used to hide their jealousy before but now they no longer do. I think the oba gave dem dat confidence.
DeleteQueen u hate Yorubas yet ur daddy in the lord is from Akoko Arigidi (Ondo state).. Oga ooo
DeleteNa wa ooooo!!! Ibos and Yorubas keep fighting everyday!!!
DeleteSmtcheeeww nonsense!
Well said emeka, all this ofe mmanu ppl will never make a full statement without mention the igbos. Who God has bless no man can curse.
ReplyDeleteWell said, emeka
ReplyDeleteIgbos started it and credit should be given to them.
ReplyDeleteNollywood + Artists = Igbos.
what is the head or tail of this story?? onto the next abeg....
ReplyDeleteOk well said! Yoruba's can't make a sentence without mentioning Igbo ppl's name. Its in dia blood. Leave dem, keeping silence would av been a better option here.
ReplyDeleteBut truth be told Nollywood originated from the English /igbo sphere of movie making.
ReplyDeleteHmmm it is well. In other news madam Stella when are you gonna do business post 4 upcoming business people like me o am bored and want 2 start earning something 4rm my hand jare.
ReplyDeleteKemikane, if u really wanna start earning money. Send me a mail. It may not be big initially but it's a good start. Hope u reside in lag tho.
DeleteEmeka u spoke well..I dunno why yorubas like talking about igbos..If their sentence did not start and end with mentioning igbos, then they wonr make sense..They see us as threat. Is it not cowardice? Igbos are hardworking..We make money out of nothing..Yorubas were busy doing stage play but igbos came and brought out d business side of movie making which gave birth to Nollywood..They should deal with it and stop making hell of noise..Why wont igbos dominate nollywood when our brothers are d ones investing their billions into it? Make dem shift for one side with their amala and ewedu stuffed brains....mtcheeeeeew!
ReplyDeleteKikikikik.Y evuls na.... but I don't why the we tend to have tribalism the order of the day especially the yorubas
DeleteYour good friend okija wife is Yoruba ooo lol and you call her amala and ewedu stuffed brain lmaoooooo
DeleteI think both misunderstood themselves. And both are actually right. I think what the Wale man is saying is that the Yorubas started off with stage dramas..which u rightly mentioned. But the ibos amplified it into home video, which is Emeka's point. So both of them are right. I don't see the need for tribal war on this. After all, everybody is making money from it. And I don't think the monies made has hausa, igbo or yoruba inscribed on it. Money is money. They should let it rest I beg
DeleteBut Na wa ooo!!!!
DeleteIf Ibo and Yoruba war start now, who I wan folow????
Eyyyy!!!!
Okija wife u go follow us Na, Abi u no love Pa Chiboy again?
DeleteBwahahahahahahaha.....
Emeka ike has a point sha.
Anon 14:33..Holy ghost fire...I shout..Back to sender..Its u and ur entire generation dat will witness bad thing..Terrible thing will continue to trail u in Jesus name..Amen! I jump u pass..Fool!
DeleteOkija wife u must follow ur husband cos its for better or worse..Hahahahaha.
DeleteSisi Eko..U made a good point..but yorubas are always in d habit ot overflogging issues as long as Igbos are involved..I dont know why.
DeleteSDK post my reply to that anonymous Wey say something bad go happen to chizoba Na!!!
DeleteWhich kind tin be this??? Seems I go still leave your blog for you make you chop!
Smtcheeeww!
@chizzy and chyAda........no be pa Chiboy own dey do me sef! Na my children ooooo, dey cant speak any Ibo ooo, but they rap Yoruba like say no tomorrow!!!
DeleteHausa movies too dey sell
DeleteWe should all work together. Bring every tribe under one umbrella and continue to churn out good movies with interesting story lines and huge investment. By that way we can be globally recognised more in term of productions and finest and interesting story to tell.
ReplyDeleteExactly
DeleteOkay
ReplyDelete#GODWIN
Please Emeke Ike, for my sake when next you are interviewed, just go straight to the point.
ReplyDeleteMtchewwww!!!!!
ReplyDeleteGOD BLESS NIGERIA.
I am truly tired of all these tribal comments and divisions!
ReplyDeleteAs in ehn, see this small matter they want to turn into an issue again. So much aggression in the air. Point is we are entertained by all of them. Tribe or not..

Delete@Anon 14:13...but Bariya is married n responsible na. Haba. Easy.
Somto is correct.I went for one course on filmography and the man wanted to fuck me meanwhile he collected all his fees.its true.
DeleteWell said Emaka Ike, it is high time this yoruba people stop with the Tribalism. They can not keep blaming the Igbo's for being successful and having the drive to succeed and excel in their chosen careers.
ReplyDeleteNo one stopped the Yorubas from achieving as well.... Stop hating Igbo's Biko! (Btw I am not Ibgo) just truth has to be said!
I think instead of this plenty talk he should have just replied Wale by saying, "anything an Igbo man touches, he excels".
ReplyDeleteEmeka Ike is right, I remember the days of Mike Orihedimma and Uwaezuoke
ReplyDeleteThe IGBOS are hardworking people though,We are one Nigeria.am tired of all these tribal talk
ReplyDeleteWell said Emeka; u sounded so intelligence. Sense no b by d number of degrees one has. Ur responses shows d@ ur skl fees wasn't a waste. The yorubas always amaze me; upon how well read n traveled dey are, dey always feel inferior wen it coms t issues dats connects dem t an igbo man. Tribalistic peeps! Mschew! Wen 2 or 3 yoruba peeps are gathered dem will b blowing dia dialect not minding those arnd dem who r non yorubas but as sooon as an igbo man stats a conversation wt a fellow igbo man. Their faces wud turn pink n dey say "awon omo yIBO ti beere ni yen" ("these ibo people don sta again"). Abeg dia matter tire me Jare, d oda time it's dat one d@ calls himsef Kunle Afolayan. Let dem take a chill biko, d sky is large enof t contain as many birds dat can fly.
ReplyDeleteLol. Tribal issues will never stop in naija. An enlightened homo_sapien like wale uttering such hog-wash out of his buccal cavity? Ike now talking like the matured? Which way Nigeria. My comment has never been posted,i hope it does this timem
ReplyDeleteNollywood! nollywood!! nollywood!!!......well guess they r people who actually watch it cos i dont....#and no one should give me a tale about supporting my people...country..blah blah blah....until they can make me sit on d edge of my sit with suspense like hollwood does.....until they can make me stay awake all night cos of a movie or even forget food or wish that planned date could be postponed....until they can put their all..whether yoruba or igbo into making a good movie and not just money......something original and not churning out something that can pass for a movie will i be interested enough to spend my money on it.....they should also give new faces a chance cos d posters i see are almost d same set of people.....i an watch movies for a whole night....or read a book..am a night owl...i work best at night..*widegrin*......but if u want me to sleep within d hour, take my books and put a nigerian film......#people making noise over nothing.

ReplyDeleteMr "pencil in the hands of the creator". Most of ur casts are Yorubas. Slow ur horses!
ReplyDeleteIt's Hubert Ogunde not "Hilbert Ogungbe". His dramas/cinemas were so scary, yet so real. However, they were Yoruba movies with only Yoruba casts. #didntaffectviewership#
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteMight I add that Yorubas had their own home video industry.
ReplyDeleteThey had their own target audience and they made their money.
I vividly remember the days of Amin Orun, ashewo to re Mecca and co,yemi my lover.
I watched all this on home video so it's wrong to say Yorubas used to act only on the stage. They made their films for commercial purposes and some were even shown in the cinema during holidays or festive periods.

There had been home videos made in yoruba way before this nomenclature known as nollywood, alade aromire and others have been making home videos sold by NEK video links at idumota since the late 80*s,..i am sure emeka dum ike was still in primary school back then, instead of him to seek for proper knowledge about his industry,he is busy spewing rubbish
