Buhari Set To Reduce Ministeries From 42 To 19; Merge EFCC With ICPC And Scrape 50 Govt Agencies

President Muhammadu Buhari is said to have accepted the recommendation of the transition committee to slash the number of ministries from the present 42 to 19 with a view to saving cost and making them more effective and responsive to the needs of  Nigerians.

Many of the ministries have also been merged to ensure proper coordination of duties and ensure greater efficiency and service delivery.

This development comes after three weeks of consultations with international and Nigeria’s political leaders

According to Vanguard, a presidency source said that the number of  Federal Government departments and agencies had also been trimmed in line with the policy of the administration.

Effectively, it means that no fewer than 50 of the MDAs that were not backed by relevant laws might be scrapped and their staff moved into relevant departments to save cost.

The Presidency source hinted,”But the point being made is that relevant MDAs that will exist under the present administration must be those backed by laws.

“What that means is that the era of doing things the wrong way to please certain persons in positions of power is over.”

Shedding light on some of the ministries that had been merged, the official pointed out that the Ministry of Aviation and relevant agencies had been subsumed with Inland Waterways and associated agencies.

Similarly, the Ministry of Agriculture has been merged with that of Water Resources under what the  Presidency source described as the consolidation of larger ministries.

It was learnt that under the administration of Buhari, only 19 ministers and 17 ministers of state would operate as opposed to the previous arrangement where there were at least 42.

It was further gathered that some ministries would be run by senior ministers while others would be manned by junior ministers to save cost.

On the fight against corruption, the source disclosed to Vanguard that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission  (EFCC) is to be merged with the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, to tackle graft in a new way that would be prompt, fearless and decisive.

A top source also said Buhari was expected to make some key appointments this week so as to get the machinery of his administration running.

    9. Hope his thinking about the unemployment this thing is going to cause? Why do I feel like amnesty is the main reason behind the merger? Obj created loads of these agencies and it created employment that's the main thing I don't know if that's the problem we have in the country.

    10. The only thing I don't agree with is merging of the Aviation sector. That sector needs to be run in isolation of any other ministry so that they can properly effect the necessary safety measures to avoid series of air mishaps in our air wave. And also, an experienced aviation person should be in charge. And not just a figure head administrator like we had in the past. Technicality is of the essence. The two most important ministry in my opinion is the aviation and the ministry of health. These two should be run unparalleled. Anyway what do I know.. can't wait for his ministerial list.

    11. Dear sisi eko,
If there is a system in place it can and will work. Where I live, Electricity is merged with water. The bill for electricity and water comes as one. And those things work without fail. The transport authority merges road, rail, and water. The only reason their aviation is separate is because it is run as a business of the federal government. I make bold to tell you that their aviation business is the most profitable government investment. And the fastest growing in the world.
So, if we are dedicated and WILL commit to the system, it will work!

  15. It sounds like a good step in the right direction. Expectedly, the cost of running one of these merged ministries will be enormous, so he has to take great care with these appointments because if a corrupt person is appointed to head one of these ministries, a lot will be lost

    2. What they fail to realise is that most mergers lead to redundancy. If ministries are merged together a lot of people will be redundant and there will be no vacancy for new recruits . I just hope they have a plan in motion because in as much as this will cut costs it could also cause more harm than good.

  34. It's not even one month since Buhari took over. You think he can solve things over night? When Jonathan was there they didn't talk, the were all happy and satisfied with bad governance. Now we have someone working and making attempts to put things right and they expect him to do it over night. These are also people that did not vote for Buhari at all, they are now the ones making the most noise and demands. Shameless people.

  35. This is a good move dou I hope some relevant ministries and govt agencies will not disappear into oblivion..aside that,it's necessary cos most ministers of state do virtually nothing but coordinate money embezzling activities in their lil space.not to talk abt portfolios that are almost insignificant.i doubt if they have any job schedule dan waiting for monthly income and allowances #rme#

  37. Why can't people read and understand before commenting.

The article says "50 of the MDAs that were not backed by relevant laws might be scrapped and their staff moved into relevant departments to save cost." which means after scrapping some departments the staff there will be moved into the relevant departments that will remain and also save cost in the process. There might be job losses, in this case redundancy but it won't be on a massive scale if staff will be moved to relevant departments.

This is the result of things not done right from the beginning. Jonathan and his government created and left a big mess. It's simply clean up time.

  42. I'm 100% in support of the mergers. The people that will be out of jobs were not doing anything, just collecting salaries for nothing. Most ministry staff go to work when payday is near. Oshisco

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yes oh. Now we'll know those who are truly working. Most of the ministers in the past didn't know or do jack, they were just ministers for show while those who actually ran their ministry were hardly noticed or applauded.
So I quite align with the development. Let them narrow down to the necessary things and cut off all the excess avenues that people use to sign huge monies out of the treasury. The most exciting for me is that Buhari will double as the petroleum minister. If the news is anything to go by.
