Actor Saheed Balogun Takes A Swipe At Ex-President Jonathan For Treating Entertainers Like Children

"Goodluck Jonathan treated entertainers like school-children. The last government was hosting us (Nollywood) as if they were hosting birthday parties for kids," Yoruba actor and producer, Saheed Balogun said while taking a swipe at President Jonathan’s erstwhile government, in a recent chat with Vanguard's Potpourri.

He said the former president romanced the industry practitioners for all the wrong reasons and did not do what he ought to do for the film industry.

"For one day, they never thought it fit to beg senators and members of the House of Representatives to pass appropriate laws on piracy."

“There was a time I produced a movie, and it was pirated within days. It’s like the pirates have their own copies. We’re still looking to find who leaked it, but we don’t know yet. I lost over N15 million on that project. I’m still motivated to do more because it’s my dream. Soon, change will come to this country," he said.

“I am seizing this opportunity to beg the new senators and House members who are in the committee in charge of culture to please pass relevant bills on entertainment. That is what they are elected to do, not to be shouting and jumping fence like they did the last time.”

When asked if that is why he did not publicly support any political candidate during the last elections, He replied...

“I did, but I refused to follow any senator or House of Representatives members who want to go for re-election, and I did not encourage my colleagues to follow them as well. It is not a case of giving them another chance of four years, because I said the same thing four years ago, and they didn’t listen. I supported Governor Ajimobi of my home state, Oyo, because he transformed the state.”

    2. Anon 16:13 you are obviously the biggot with basket brain? That is not GEJ's duty that ought to be the duty of the actors guild to push it to the lawmakers to pass as a bill. He is just an olodo and just wants to talk for talking sake. GEJ has done a whole lot for them and they should be grateful to him for that.

    1. Well, to a large extent he's right. Not as if the pirates will stop instantaneously if the bill is passed, but at least there'll be a law against whoever is caught at it. Meanwhile I don't see this guy as a good actor jare.. dunno why, but to me he's just there. Maybe he's a better producer though. Ibinabo should have used her opportunity and access to Jonathan to ensure this, but now it's too late. I don't think Buhari will have time for nollywood frivolities. When BH is there to be conquered. Una doh oh.

  23. Self entitled speech from a man in a state of ennui.
    What is making you dissatisfied?
He never mentioned how the party should have been?
He should have hosted you like Neil Armstrong coming back from the moon?
He never concluded his accusatory speech. He should have told us what he wanted the president to do.

So the president of the federal republic of Nigeria should become a lobbyist? Who are the 'they' that should talk to the senate. The president or your guild? Certainly you know the executive has a different role to play. Ofcourse you know. So why drag in the parties? You were not interested but others were.

It was definitely a privilege and not your right, whatever reason it was done for. You see Obama trying 2 stick out for Jayz and Beyonce and them sticking up to him. Attending political gala and all, it's called politics. They gain from each other and everyone does it for themselves. Nothing is ever handed free.

Quit your self entitled 'they' talk. Nowhere does govt invest directly in movies. It's left for independedent entrepreneurs. Who puts his money into something that is rarely ever original, shit scripts, boring plagiarised plots + a piracy ridden industry?
Help urself by not only lobbying 2 get laws passed, but making sure the laws are well executed. Instead of blaming 'they'.

And btw, you didn't openly support any candidate? I'm sure we noticed...im sure the price of banana and groundnut changed in órè market.

  24. Nollywood should stop churning out movies in large numbers too like it's guguru and epa. That's why your movies are pirated and that's why y'all aren't taken seriously. Make quality movies and not quantity.

    1. U will watch some movies and just be regretting. Everybody is now a producer. They just accept every Tom Dick and Harry into the industry without proper scrutiny or formal training. So why won't the industry be flopped with amateurs who use their BlackBerry to record movies in their living room? Torrr
