A Woman-led Armed Robbery Gang Attack Two Lagos Banks

A Zenith Bank official at the scene said,

“One of them entered and when he saw about N20m that we had arranged to put inside our ATMs, he shouted, ‘Area, Zico see money. See money wey we dey look for.’ He started dancing.

Led by a young lady said to be under 20, a group of robbers, numbering about 16 invaded two banks, located directly opposite the Ipakodo Police Division, at about 9am Wednesday morning.

Shattering down the rotor doors of the two banks with dynamite, they forcefully gained entrance, ordering members of staff and their customers to lie down.

They were also said to have opened fire at the police station to scare the officers, after which they proceeded with their operation.

At Zenith Bank branch in Ebute-Ipakodo in Ikorodu, Lagos, the robbers made away with about N20m said to have been arranged for loading into the ATM and also about N60m from the strong room that was ready to be taken away by a bullion van that morning.

A Zenith Bank official at the scene said,

“One of them entered and when he saw about N20m that we had arranged to put inside our ATMs, he shouted, ‘Area, Zico see money. See money wey we dey look for.’ He started dancing.

“When the lady opened the strong room, the robber that shouted in the ATM room exclaimed again, ‘Eheeeee, Area, Zico give me bags! Give me bags.   Come and see money wey we dey look for.

They packed everything in the strong room; more than N60m. We were expecting a bullion van to move the money before the incident happened.”

First Bank branch of the area was not spared either.

Satisfied with their bounty, the gunmen stormed out and challenged policemen, whose station is directly opposite the First Bank branch, to confront them.

No policeman came around, even as the robbers set three Sports Utility Vehicles which they drove to the banks, on fire, after removing their number plates.

According to an eyewitness, The policemen hid at the back of Ipakodo Grammar School for more than one hour, even the military officers were said to have taken cover.

Four persons were injured by the robbers who fled through the jetty in the area. Some hit by stray bullets and others by shattered glasses.

The head of security, Ipakodo Community Development Association, Femi Awode, said he called two police officers on the phone to no avail.

However, about 20 mins after the robbers had fled, security operatives, comprising policemen and soldiers flooded the scene in about 10 pickups, two armoured tanks and one OP MESA pickup van.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti, who visited the scene of the incident along with some military officers, said the command would get the robbers.

He said, “I am here with other service chiefs to have a joint coordinated approach to this incident. We are very positive that we are going to get to the root of the matter. Just give us time.

“The timing and conduct of the men (police officers) are also going into investigation. We are checking the operation of these jetties and the vulnerability of our waterways. Nobody died.”

According to the command’s spokesperson DSP Kenneth Nwosu, “The command will reward anybody with useful information towards the arrest of the bank robbers with N5m."

Hmmm,I am sorry to say but it looks from the writeup as if the robbers had insider tip on when the money would be ready to leave.they arrived just at the nick of time..that is suspicious. If they want to catch these thieves before the money is finished they should start investigations from ''inside''

    3. Apart from the talk of insider job, they should also confirm the missing amount now. Make one sharp bank manager no go use this opportunity thief money by claiming a total of 70million stolen when in actual fact maybe only 10million was stolen, he will now pocket the rest.

When they see gobe dem no dey wait but when invited for 2fighting you go see them quoting law. This is a disgrace on them and to think the banks were opposite a police station na wa sha

You see these ones too will be caught, they always get caught at the long run.

  15. Some people are going to lose their jobs unfortunately.
Expecting bullion van to come and evacuate as early as 8am means they closed above the branch limit. I hope they have their superior approval. So na insurance go lose.

Am tempted to agree with Stella because robbers hardly attack early in the morning unless there is information that the branch slept with lots of cash.

  21. There is always an insider in cases like this. So sorry for injured persons and I pray the culprits are brought to book. This is the second case this year I think, we need security on our water ways. Imagine it took place beside a police station such boldness because we our police personals are sissyssss. What a shame!

    1. What I don't understand is how they didn't go and lay a siege for them on all ends of the water way?? They heard the robbers made for the jetty, so they should have known they would escape through the water, why didn't they quickly correspond with officers at the other side to wait for them? Abi would they have dived under the water and not come out? If they know where all the sides of the water ends, they should have blocked them na... anyway what do I know

    Well I dont blame them

    Then u must be hallucinating.

  32. Hahaha I find d exclamation funny @see money wey we don dey find. So in all we are to believe they made away with about 80million, Lol na so!!!. D manager mustav collected bout 10million and den blamed it on d robbers cos truth be told, wen robberies happen, these banks take advantage of looting and den pinning it on d robbers, saying in all,dey made away wv this and they made away with that. So zenith banks puts up to 20m in their atm!!! Who wouldav known and yet all it takes is just a lil queue and d atm tells u it's unable to dispense catch. Still dnt belive d story above,@least some of it. How can an atm in ikorodu of all places be loaded with 20m just like that @a go.

There definitely is an insider, robbers dnt just go robbing banks without pre information.

Y do i have ds feeling dt d narrator exaggerated a little bit,not just on d money bt also on d scene dt played out. Na dem sabi sha!!!

5m for any1 dt has an info on d suspects whereabouts!!! Hahaha dt's laughable,no be naija we dey again??? Be rest assured u would be arrested as well cos ud be asked how come u knew bout dia whereabout. 5million!!! Yea right!

  33. This is so terrible! When I read the part that d police hid behind a school I laughed. Nigeria security force is just a joke. And those thieves will be killed one day. Their day of reckoning will come.

  34. Stella forget insider work, you think these guys are stupid, some of them are graduates, they must have planned well for the operation.

Bullion van comes for money either in the morning or evening, you really don't need any one to tell you that.

Am so sad at the reinforcement efforts of the police and military, came too late.

    Solution:
    - I believe banking streets should have enough surveillance cameras controlled by the police state command
    - Quick Tactical Teams made up police reinforced by military
-Take off redundant police officer at various banks
    - Staff training on security
    - funded by the Banks
