Student Posing As Tinubu On Facebook To Dupe Job Seekers Arrested

A 19-year-old polytechnic student, Emmanuel Eto, has been nabbed by the Police for allegedly impersonating a former Governor of Lagos State and the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, on Facebook.

The police said the suspect was apprehended by operatives of the State Intelligence Bureau of the Lagos State Police Command, following a complaint
made by one Idowu Adeyemi that an unknown person, impersonating as Tinubu, created a Faceboook account in same name, and swindled some job seekers.

It was gathered that Eto allegedly told members of the public, through the fake Facebook account, that there were available employment opportunities in NNPC and other government agencies, and requested that interested applicants should pay the sum of N26,850, which was employment and processing charges.

The police recovered six SIM cards, 13 empty SIM card packs, six photographs of a white man, and one iPad from the suspect.

Speaking with PUNCH, Eto, who hails from Oleh in the Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State, said it was another student in the polytechnic who trained him.

“I am studying Mechanical Engineering at the polytechnic. I am in my second year. This whole thing started in January 2015. It was a colleague, Kelvin, who gave me the idea. I don’t know Tinubu and have not met him. My friend gave me the idea, and it actually worked because three job seekers paid money into my bank account.

“I also have phone numbers from the United Kingdom and the United States of America which I used to communicate with victims. It is just three persons I have duped so far,” he said.

While confirming the arrest, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Kayode Aderanti, said the command would not fail to bring all criminally minded persons to justice.

“The command will not rest on its oars to ensure that any crime committed is punished and the offenders apprehended. The suspect, who posed as a prominent Nigerian on the Facebook and other social media platforms, has confessed to the crime and investigation is ongoing,” he said.

    3. It is the people that paid him that should be arrested for their epic foolishness. C'mon..would Tinubu or any govt official take to their Facebook to recruit for jobs? And then ask u to pay into an unofficial account? I don't blame the guy, na the mumus wey pay be the problem.

  10. The police are always quick to catch and flaunt these petty thieves while the real thieves(Tinubu and co)receive awards and accolades from the system.
As young as he is all he can think of is crime.
May he be duly punished so other young thieves can learn. Though I doubt they will ever learn.

  23. It's quite a pity @ such age, he thinks fraud is a way of life & a means of livelihood? Every crime must be punished, d hustle na die but seriously thinking ou politicians are d one to blame bcs of their overblown life styles, youths look @ dem & see a role model in dem, while dey are d real thieves. (In African China's voicePoorman wey thieve Maggie we go see him face for crime fighters; while rich go dey halaa prayer modupe, poor man go dey shout anwulam ooo!)

  24. Same way one idiot contacted me on linkedin using Deziani Allison Madueke's profile (Minister of Petroleum). Dude told me that the Civil service is currently recruiting and he would like to help me get a job there. Lol. I had just two questions for him. Is the Honorable Min. of petroleum that jobless esp now with all the oil fund allegations she is presently battling with? Secondly, what's her business with civil service even if it were true that they are recruiting. Dude just went silent on me ever since. lol

In same light, another idiot contacted me sometime last year to inform me about a job offer at Shell. Dude knew my full name, address and even mother's name. Asked me to pay 60k for processing fee. Lol. I simply told him to get a life.

This stuff is becoming rampant and an immediate action needs to be taken in order to curb it. It is rather alarming that ignorant citizens keep falling victims.
