A Nigerian nurse based in Queens, New York, United States, has been arrested in the scalding death of a special-needs toddler after she submerged her in 130-degree bath water for 30 seconds.
According to Daily Mail, the licensed nurse practitioner, Oluyemisi Adebayo, 54 was arrested on Wednesday at around 7 a.m in JFK Airport just as she was about to flee the country and board a flight back home to Nigeria.
Authorities said the 54 year old nurse who was hired a day before the incident was taking care of 23-month-old Naomi Mondesire on April 21st when she prepared her for a bath.
The nurse reportedly told detectives that she tested the water with her own hand before placing Naomi in the tub, and subsequently noticed Naomi’s skin peeling off after taking her out from the bath.
Doctors however told police that Adebayo’s description of how the baby was burned was inconsistent with the nature of her injuries.
Authorities believe that Naomi was submerged up to her waist in 130-degree water for 30 seconds and the little girl died from thermal injuries to 50 per cent of her body on Monday, three days after doctors at Nassau University Medical Center carried out a surgery on her.
Naomi's mother, 32-year-old Cynthia Mondesire, said she had had two miscarriages before giving birth to Naomi - her only surviving child, prematurely at 25 weeks.
Naomi's grandmother was heartbroken and furious at the woman she had hired to look after the little girl just one day before she was scalded.
Gardite Mondesire, 54, said she returned to her apartment on Memphis Avenue in the Rosedale section of Queens at around 7.25pm Tuesday to find her tenant running around the home picking up pieces of her granddaughter's skin.
Adebayo who initially claimed she didn't know how Naomi got scalded, later admitted it was a mistake.
However, there are reports that Adebayo who has been a licensed nurse practitioner for more than 16 years, could face up to 25 years to life imprisonment if convicted.

This woman cooked this baby alive...I wanted to ignore this story but i just couldnt....why are people so wicked?why submerge a baby inside boiling water?
She should be locked up and the keys thrown away.
Did dis woman do dis on purpose.......... Cuz i dont see any reason y she will want to hurt d baby..... Abi she dey mad..... She shud face her warrant
ReplyDeleteOf course she should be locked up for a very long time.
DeleteI'm sure she forgot to test the water temperature before putting the child in it; wicked soul.
Rip little one.
Click my name for all your celebration cakes and cupcakes, cheers
The nurse did not wake up that day to kill.
DeleteI believe this was a honest mistake.
My prayers to baby's family
And the Nigerian nurse.
May the soul of the baby rest in peace.
*an honest*
DeleteIf she didn't do it on purpose, then the witches in her village were really after her. How can a nurse with 16 yrs working experience intentionally roast a child in hot water?? This is purely unbelievable. Something went terribly wrong somewhere.
DeleteExcuse me? OK let's play out the scenario here.
DeleteFirst, let's assume it was an error. The kind of hot water that could damaged the baby's skin to this extent, must have been showing some vapour of steam. Meaning this nanny should have SEEN it was very hot without having to use her hands to feel the water first.
Second scenario.. could she have done this on purpose? No, I don't think so. Motive? None. She's been in practice for so long to jeopardise her licence. Her job I'm sure is her livelihood. It must have been a careless mistake. She wasn't paying attention. But proving this may be difficult because she tried to elope
But for 30 seconds? Even she couldn't have left her hands in the hot water for that long. Didn't the baby scream within the first 2seconds of dipping him in? Why wait 10 or 30 seconds??
This is what makes her case rather peculiar. It's strange. Mistakes are instantaneously reverted within the first few seconds. Especially when it involves reflex, movement of the body and reaction to shock. Hmmm... She's on a long thing.
May God console the mother and nan
I think she put d baby in first, den opened d tap, and left 2 pick a call,d cry of d baby brot her back! It was 2 late!!!...dats d only xplanation I ve!!!
DeleteMama sudiq!!!
I just can't with this story today. How cld she be so careless with her job and another human life? A fragile one for that matter. And on top of that trying to run away to Nigeria? I bet she was distracted, maybe on her phone gossiping. I tell you, I don't trust some African nurses. They don't do it for the passion but for the overtime money involved. I just don't understand how this cld have happened.
ReplyDeleteUr guess is a clear picture offf what might have transpired. Negligence... Phone gossip nothing else
DeleteYou don't know no shit, how many africans in the diaspora are nurses, and practicing because they are passionate about their jobs? Abi na passion carry you go dey search for greener pastures abroad? If you are passionate , you should be on mercy ship, or in one remote village giving treatments for free. Itk like you.
DeleteMy thoughts exactly. She must have been distracted her mind wasn't on the job.
DeleteIdnt think she did it on purpose, negligence and carelessness
DeleteThank u. Its phone gossip . Stay away from ur phones
DeleteSweet Jesus!!
ReplyDeleteHow wicked can the heart of Man be?
Well for me I don't think it was intentional could just be a careless act.she probably left the baby in the bathtub and didn't test the water.and went attending to something else before she came back the damage has been done, probably the baby been crying she didn't care coz she felt she was returning soon and probably thought was just the usual baby bathing cry, coz it was 30seconds, she ran out of fear coz she knew what was up for her.
DeleteThis is wickedness. For the babys skin to be peeling off the water must have been very very hot. Thank God she was caught . God protect our children from harm from care givers.
ReplyDeleteSo sad! Whether distracted or not, there's no excuse for murder! She killed an innocent baby so she must pay! What a waste smh
DeleteRip to the lil baby
Na waa o. Woman why na? Rip little one. Take heart mother and granny
ReplyDeleteNa all these midwives wey dey claim experienced, even for naija here most of those women if u c d water dem dey use bath pikin eeeh, r.i.p little one
ReplyDeleteGod have mercy!
ReplyDeleteSHE PROBABLY DIDNT INTEND TO 'COOK' THE BABY. SHE WAS SIMPLY NEGLIGENT AND DID NOT PAY ATTENDTION TO WHAT SHE WAS DOING OR TEST THE WATER TO SEE HOW HOT IT WAS. LEARNT SHE WAS ARRESTED AT THE AIRPORT WHILE ATTEMPTING TO FLEE..... WOULDNT WANT TO BE HER RIGHT NOW.....
ReplyDeleteBia dis calabar geh! So u no read whr dem say she test the water! Anyways what does a common calabar know!? So I will pardon u
DeleteShe could be lying cos her story has been inconsistent. You didn't need to insult calabar ppl cos you were not there. With a name like maddie you must be mad
Delete@ Maddie: Based on your response you are clearly a very ugly person. A bigot with a cave man mentality. Crawl back into the cave bcos today's global village has no place for the likes of you. Got it?
DeleteThis is heartbreaking. This was just begining to enjoy a normal life after all the struggkes since birth, now this?
ReplyDeleteI don't know what went wrong here. Negligence? Wickedness? I really don't believe the nurse did this on purpose but how can one explain that?
RIP little one. May God comfort the mother (oh dear woman! ) grandmother and all the family members.
The heart of man is desperately wicked. What could have warranted this despicable action from the nurse. To think that she should protect lives but decided to kill an innocent child is heart breaking.
ReplyDeleteSign of end of time
ReplyDeleteAnother yoruba woman

I don't get it,what could have prompt her to submerged the little girl in a boiling water or is she mentally unstable
ReplyDeleteThis is scary
ReplyDeleteI tell you
DeletePathetic
DeleteKai! If a 54yrs old woman can do this to a toddler then the world indeed is coming to an end... after reading the story I was trying to imagine in my sub-conscious how the lil baby will be crying and shouting from the burns! oooo goodness lord! This woman shud not be spared biko! She shud be put to death by stoning!
ReplyDeleteBaby cannot cry out.
DeleteShe has a tracheostomy.
~Tube for breathing from the throat area~
Oh really? Didn't notice that the baby cannot cry out.. before I made my earlier submission. But still, she should have seen the heat. The water that ripped apart the baby's skin must have been very hot and highly noticeable when close to the bowl.
DeleteThe heart of man is desperately wicked. What could have warranted this despicable action from the nurse. To think that she should protect lives but decided to kill an innocent child is heart breaking.
ReplyDeleteJesus nwoke Awka.
ReplyDeleteWhat did i just read?
Iren B,U no go kill person for this blog. kedu ka isi mara na Jesus bu onye Awka

Oh well, motive or not, she'll do time.
#WhiteDiamondOut
Lord. I can kill this woman with my bare hands
ReplyDeleteOMG!!!!how true is this.
ReplyDeleteWickedness
ReplyDeleteMost people enter medical field for the money involved (especially in abroad), not for passion for the job and the sick.
ReplyDeleteWas it deliberate or mistake? Only God knows

ReplyDeleteI'm sure she is not a prayerful person and finally the evil powers of her father's house don get am.
DeleteVery true .. Dey don turn americana forget say bad belle ppl dey wait am for house..... May dey nt get us in Jesus Name
DeleteI call this wicked mistake!!! She claimed to have tested the temp of the water with her hand, and it did not scald her? A 54 year old woman cannot differentiate between warm and hot?
ReplyDeleteDid the baby not let out a cry of pain immediately she put her inside the tub? It was deliberate jor! Why run away? When the tap is turned to hot and the water is running into the closed tub, it will be getting cooler, because the steam is getting off, and no hot water in bathrooms is that hot, that it can scald a body so bad, that the skin will be falling off, to the extent of picking pieces of the flesh from the floor and it will cause internal thermal burns, unless she boiled water in a kettle and poured into the tub!!! She should be well interrogated!!
Rest in peace little angel in the hands of your creator.
Daycare centers still remain the best. I personally don't like in-house creches or nannies.
Nitty Gritty.
I just watched the video trending in fb how a nurse beat a new born baby because she was crying, the baby is in critical condition, she was arrested. I couldn't finish watching because I was in tears and so angry. What has happened to humanity???
DeleteOMG
ReplyDeleteOoh my God poor baby.
ReplyDeleteHow could a 54 year old woman be so careless with a baby?
R.I.P little Angel.
Nawa ooo
ReplyDeleteBut why are this people disgracing our country na
Thank you german juice, because she is yoruba, some igbo people will come out with tribalistic comments. This could have happened to anybody of any tribe and nationality. May we pray that none of us finds ourselves in such a costly mistake for whatever reasons.
ReplyDeleteanon 17:56,costly mistake ke,costly intention ni
DeleteWhat a terrible thing to do.Maybe she forgot to test the water or deliberately killed the child, only God knows. In any case she was too careless.RIP to the poor soul.May God comfort the mother.

ReplyDeleteShut up my friend. You must be an Eliza nurse. Nurses don't talk the way you do. What honest mistake? Can someone please remind me the boiling point of water? How can she not know how scalding that water is? May God save her soul.
DeleteGo sit on a dick or eat pussy fool. Why did she run? Oloriburuku
DeleteThere r two sides t ds story: the nurse's side n d baby's side--- only if d dead kud talk. Poor Naomi! Rip lil one. She muist b a wicked somborry. Let her face d law mbok.
ReplyDeleteI know this woman in New York, she is a friend to my Aunt. Shady, jazz, manipulative and wicked. Years ago she made somebody close to her go to jail, the person promised that she must suffer the same fate. You guys can't even imagine the extent of her jazzy ways... I only feel sorry for the baby who died.
ReplyDeleteChoi na wa. Things we hear.
DeletePeople! No need to incorporate the filthy talk or nationality/ethnic group bashing. The baby wasn't submerged in hot water because the nurse is Nigerian. She has given mixed accounts of what happened. We know based on the reports, she held the child in the water for at least 30 second, that's a long time to be in hot water. Bathing a child usually involve a washcloth and soap. This would mean the nurse's hand was in the water for the same amount of time. How is it she has no burns. What was her intent in just holding the baby and half submerging her in the water? Jail is a good place for her right now. I' sorry to know that child suffered as she did. I pray that her parents/family will be comforted by god's grace.

ReplyDeleteThis is wickedness
ReplyDeleteDid u say a nurse practitioner? I doubt if she is really one cos a nurse practitioner's job is not to give bath to baby. Nurse practitioners job is similar to that of a Doctor, infact that is what many hospitals and clinics in the state use now but many people do not. I am guessing the woman is more like nursing aide who is hired as a home health aide.
