Nigerian Banks Allegedly Employ New Tactics To Defraud Customers.

Lots of Nigerians have shared their banking experiences with Punch as to how Nigerian banks have derived several means of defrauding them of their hard earned money on a daily basis.

Amongst those that shared their experiences is Mr Francis A
gadaga and recounting his ordeal, he said he could have been a widower by now. On September 12, 2014, he rushed to an Automated Teller Machine point in his neighbourhood at Igando, a Lagos suburb, to pick some cash with which to take his ailing wife, Sandra, to the hospital. It was a tough period for the family. The N7, 850 left in his bank account would go a long way in dousing the situation if he could get access to the fund. After inserting his card into one of the ATMs and requesting to withdraw N7, 000, what followed almost left the father of two in tears.

“It was on a Sunday afternoon and we had just returned from church. when my wife started feeling feverish,” he began. “Her temperature became so high that we needed to quickly rush her to a hospital. I didn’t have any money on me at the time and so I hurried to the nearest ATM point to withdraw the little money I had in the account.

“However, to my utmost shock, I got a debit alert but did not get any money from the machine. I was so confused and tensed because I had never experienced such before and the kind of situation on ground then was a matter of life and death,” he said.

After waiting for a while to see if the cash would pop out of the machine, Agadaga left the place heartbroken and more tensed than he ever was. It took the kindness of few neighbours and friends to raise the money needed to save his wife’s life at a private clinic she was rushed to for treatment.

“It was my neighbours and friends who helped to raise N8, 000 with which I took her to the hospital where she was given injections and drugs. The next day, I went to my bank to complain and bank officials promised to reverse the debit after I had filled a form.

“I went back there after about a week later to find out why the money had not been reversed as promised. I was told their system had some technical problems, which they were trying to fix. I decided to give them some more time for the problem to be rectified. But after going there several times and being told the same thing, I left everything to God.

“Since that period till now, my N7, 000 has not been refunded. If not for my neighbours and friends who helped with some cash that day, maybe my wife could have died from that sickness,” the disgruntled young father told Punch.

Like Agadaga, Ejiro Dumuje, is still waiting for her money to be reverted back to her account four months after she was wrongly debited by an ATM in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital. Dumuje had visited the ancient city to purchase bales of Adire fabric to resell in Edo and Delta states where she shuttles frequently when she suddenly ran out of cash. She headed for the nearest ATM point to collect some money. After paying her initial request of N40, 000, the young lady decided to pick additional N5, 000 from the machine. That was where things went wrong. A debit alert was sent to her phone but the machine never paid that money. Four months on, Dumuje is still waiting after several complaints at her bank.

“I have been to my bank more than three times to complain and ask why my money has not been refunded,” she said. “The people at the customer care just try to calm me by assuring that the case was still under investigation and that a refund would be effected as soon as possible. This is the fourth month and I have not seen my money. I am tired of going to complain. If they like, they can pay and if not, I leave them to God,” the visibly enraged lady said.

Bayo Odesina was in his office in Lagos in December 2013 when he got a debit alert of N250, 000 on his phone. It was an alert for an online transaction carried out through his MasterCard in Flushing, New York, United States of America. Agitated by the development, Odesina phoned his account officer to complain about the development and followed it up by contacting his lawyers to write the bank.

The financial institution replied and asked for a three-month period to properly investigate the matter. After three months, the bank sent a letter to Odesina’s home, accusing him of negligence and carelessness for the act. According to the bank, he had compromised the Personal Identification Number of his ATM card, thereby allowing fraudsters access to it in the process. Meanwile, it was only a few days after Odesina had approached his bank to block his ATM card after it went missing. The bank simply absolved itself of any blame in the act.

Odesina’s lawyers kept writing the bank threatening to take the matter to court if their client’s money was not refunded. In response, the bank requested for more time, apparently trying to frustrate the matter. One year passed and nothing changed. Odesina, a media practitioner, wrote the bank’s corporate affairs unit, this time, introducing himself as a journalist and highlighting how much damage a publication of the matter could do to the bank’s image. That same day, he was contacted by the head of the corporate affairs unit, who strongly assured him that his money would be refunded in a few days time after talking him out of publishing the matter in the newspaper where he worked. Three days later, an alert did come on his phone. His money had been refunded after about 13 months of intense struggle.

“Their plan was to make me forget about the money,” Odesina said. “They kept using all sorts of delay tactics just to frustrate me so I could give up on the money. If it were N5, 000, maybe I would have forgotten about it, but N250, 000 is not something I could just let go like that because it was a lot of money.

“My only saving grace was that I am a journalist. “When I realised that the bank was not going to pay my money back, I contacted the people at the corporate affairs unit and made them understand what damage a news of the entire drama could do to the image of their bank. That same day they called me and pleaded with me to give them a few days and that they would pay me back my money. Three days later, I got an alert of N250, 000 on my phone. That was one year and one month after the initial incident.

Three weeks ago, Amarachi Ejindu went to an ATM at the Akowonjo area of Lagos to withdraw some money. Though, her money was reversed back after receiving a debit alert initially for the transaction, the N65 ATM charge was not. It took a while before Ejindu noticed this and when she did, no reasonable explanation came to her mind. Why should she be charged for a transaction that was never completed or even occurred, she wondered. Why was the N65 not refunded along with the amount reversed? Who does that money go to? What does the CBN say about this? The questions kept running on her mind.

“I was really concerned about this that I had to call my bank’s customer care on the phone,” Ejindu opened. “It is a small amount but then I imagined why I should be charged for a transaction that never took place. It sounded like a rip off to me. I called the customer care people and they could not give a satisfactory explanation for this. They told me to make a formal complaint and that the matter would be looked into. I did that but they have yet to refund that money. Indeed, N65 could look like a small amount but think about how many customers would have experienced the same problem in a day and then see how much the banks could be making off people without their knowledge,” she said.

So what do you say on all these ALLEGED "scam" techniques by Nigerian banks to defraud their customers and what do you think can be done about it?

What about the enormous service charges by banks specifically the 65 naira bank charges for withdrawals made from other banks ATMs even on minute withdrawals? Shouldn't the charges only apply to valid withdrawals? Do you have any relative banking experiences to share? If yes , how did you go about it? Please share..

    1. I do not use atm no matter how small d money I am collecting is. Do u no atm pay fake money. Almost all atms in Nigeria has fake note o. Its no joke. A lot of people have had that experience. The worst is if u withdraw from an atm stand that has no bank. Most atms, their so called camera no dey work and it's deliberate. If u are given fake note and u complain the bank will turn it against u. Meanwhile the people in the bank are highly involved. Sometimes they pay fake money over the counter and u will never no. These people bringing money from bulk room must have done abracadabra. If u go back, they will turn it against u. Another one is they can transfer millions into your account and remove it in a second. It's part of a scamming syndicate. Transferring stolen money. Many back officials are thieves. Both male and female. Too many secrets. Won't expose them all sha cus sometimes they go as far as roping people in or killing a staff to cover up.

    2. How about Access bank that locked up my NGN10,000 and have refused to release it? Before I travelled out, I used to bank with Intercontinental bank. After a few years I decided I wanted to have an account in Nigeria so I would be transferring money on a regular basis, as savings and to take care of things domestically.

After my research I found out that I.C bank had now become Access bank and so I called the customer service in Lagos to reactivate my account and make enquiries on how to continue transaction with them from abroad.

After the identification process I got my account number and it was time to make transactions.

People of God it took more than 3 months for this bank to activate my soft token, whereas it took them less time to charge me for it. After the battle of activating the soft token and their useless entrust, I started transferring money to my account.

From there I would send money to my mum, cousins, blah blah blah. At a point we wanted to process visiting visa for my mum, so I transferred all the money from my account to hers save for NGN10100.00 I left there on purpose.

Fast forward to a few weeks later, their entrust was acting up and their customer service was flawed so I decided to transfer the remaining money out of my account, to enable me bank with a better organisation. For where?

This people glued my money oh, and held it tight. Access bank release my money I don't want to do again, ebe kwanu? I called and called all I kept hearing was "we will resolve it" and then they will go quiet for another 6 months.

I went on a twitter rant, they contacted me immediately via dm and we started the process all over again, to no end. I went in a twitter rant the second time, no show.

My darling SDK fam, till today my money is still stuck in Access bank and I have resolved NEVER to do any business with them. Once I land in Nigeria, the first thing I will do is to physically withdraw all the money from that bank.

That corporation is fradulent and the customer service is useless. The people at the top are detached from the business and do not know jack about banking and customer service. I am done with them and will tell anyone who cares to listen that Access bank is the WORST bank in Nigeria. If you are considering anything with them... be warned!!!

If they can hoard only NGN10100 when they sense a threat, imagine what they will do with more money. They are NOT trustworthy and everyone should avoid them, especially if you want to run a business account.

  9. Yes oo...very terrible banking situation in ds country. Banks are now the main online fraudsters... They'll deliberately debit ur acct for no reason and credit it back just to deduct COT... Deduct COT on a transfer that wasn't authorized by d customer... Automated fraud is the vogue for them now. I don't know what is been done to sanction the banks for all these... In times of emergency they act worse...mtchewwww...poor services, rude customer service... Ecobank delta campus Uniport is the worst bank you would ever use... They debit students like crazy.
They have done this like thrice to me.
The one that pained me the most was when I withdrew 4k one day I needed to pay for my course reg and 2k outta the 4 was torn... I immediately went in to complain to the man that d money the ATM paid me was bad only for the man to tell me to define bad. That so far they are concerned torn money isn't bad money.. That by CBN standard bad money is when the number or that silver lining is no longer on the money.

When I was like haba u got are supposed to dispose all this bad money and stopped dem from bin in circulation (a knowledge I got from watching the movie-mad money) the ill-mannered staff told me if I bliv so why don't I destroy torn 1000n instead of coming to pay it at the bank...... I was so pissed that day ehnnn.

Not to talk of the 65n they always debit even if its ur first time of using your ATM at their bank.

    Very annoying pple.

That's how Zenith bank defrauded my sister's husband of #50,800, the heartless monkey didn't even think to at least spare the #800 change, but NO, it had to clear the account. Till today he hasn't smelled the money, the bank is blaming him, saying he used his atm card to transact an online payment with paygo or something. Someone that hasn't even activated his online banking. This happened friday midnite 'cos the thief knew nothing can be done until monday. I just thank God for them cos that's their secondary account and it was opened thru a marketer friend(?).

Anyways my experience with gtbank na small error, Gtb MTN VTU error, but i no gree them rest until they refunded my #200, dem they craze. But i still use the service sha, but them papa if them no pay me for any yeye error.

    1. I can relate.zenith bank did this to me in 2010 tho it was a first bank atm I used,i was debited 20k without receiving the money.i made a complain at both banks but I was told it's my bank that will do a reversal(zenith) so I went to my bank and I filled their form but didn't get my money back and I didn't have the time to continue visiting them.In 2012 someone made a 50 thousand naira deposit to my account and since I knew my previous balance,i budgeted the money on that account for something. On the said day,I went to the bank to make a withdrawal,i filled the slip and proceeded to the cashier but then I notice she kept checking my slip and the computer and after a few mins she said to me"please madam u don't have sufficient amount on your account for this withdrawal",my jaws dropped and I said"what? Pls come again and she repeated what she had said.I became upset because I was in a hurry and had been on the queue for a while,so I asked her," what is my balance?"when she told me I was shocked, about 50 thousand naira had been debited so I told her to please check again and she said"yes madam this is your balance”. I felt really embarrassed with everyone stirring at me like I was a fraudster or I didn't know what I was saying.I called the person who made the last deposit to confirm if she did and she said yes although, I already know this because I confirmed it the day she made the deposit.I left really upset and headed to my other bank to make a withdrawal to complete the money I had.since then I stopped banking with zenithbank.

They recently took another N1000 for maintenance of this same fraudulent card and were taking- I think - N300 or so every month for phone services/alert which I never enjoyed until I gave a customer service agent the peace of my mind. They are all rogues and I wont blame them since the head is rotten from Aso Rock.

Used to pay for nepa credits online quickteller, they'd debit my account even though the transaction failed. Will send email like a civilized person, e no work, I started calling I mean calling every hour to the point that I'd call and the banker will tell me "we have seen the complaint you lodged an hour ago" me I'll reply yes I know, how far!? Did that and in two weeks all my monies were credited. The best was when I used Pos to pay for shopping and these silly bankers debited twice for the same transaction. I was mad. Went to their bank and created a better scene, in the end they credited me twice for the same amount, so in essence I bought shopping on Gtbank expense. Mtshewwww serves them right. Now if I use pos or atm and anything goes wrong, I immediately call the bank and start complaining and ranting, take them by surprise, and everything is solved in under an hour

  39. Totally agree... I have had this experience . I made sure I used stanbic bank at shoprite ikeja ( since I banked with them). I tried to withdraw 20k out of the 23k I had in my account. You can imagine the frustration when I got the debit alert and no cash came out the machine. It has been a month now, I have called and written and they claim they are still investigating..l I won't forget!

  41. I had the same problem on 13th October 2014. I went to ATM machine in Sterling Bank Onne and wanted to withdraw N20,000, the machine debited me but no money came out. I reported the issue to Diamond Bank which is my bank in Onne, i was given a form to fill with promises of reversing it. for more than a month i did not get the money. I have gone there and filled the same form 3 times, till now I have not gotten that money. That is what Nigerian Bank are using to defraud people.

  42. i was supposed to withdraw 120k from the atm. was using fidelity bank but withdrew from GTB ATM. that should be 6 withdrawals in total right? i got 8 withdrawal alerts instead. if you are making multiple withdrawals some transactions may not pay you. anyway, i go bank complain and they were like ÿou have to indicate the transaction that didn't pay you. i sha went to different Fidelity branches and was told same thing. meanwhile, i had printed my bank statement o! this happened in june 2013

fast-forward to this yr, i was determined to get my 40k with a plan. go to 4 branches of the bank aand indicate 2 transactions each at random since they are askimg for a particular transaction. the 1st fidelity bank i went to checked my statement and said "u were paid 6 times". i started having headache o! i then asked them to print my statement. i saw 6 transactions. where the other 2 transactions come go nah? fortunately, i still have the 1st bank statement with 8 transactions. Fidelity Bank is the worst of the worst! i'm warming up for you!

  45. I have had the same situation with Ecobank Cameroon. I used my Master card in Germany but was wrongly debited. The matter is taking ages to be looked into!
I can only hope that I will recover my money
