The Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has again declared that Nigeria is broke and blamed the inability of the state and others to pay workers’ salaries and pensions on the nation’s current poor financial condition.
Amaechi said that the nation’s economic condition could be noticed through the dwindling statutory monthly allocation usually received by the state from the Federal Government.
Speaking during a thanksgiving service organised by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, and his campaign outfit, the Greater Campaign Organisation in Port Harcourt on Sunday, the governor recalled that he was described as an alarmist last year when he cried out over Nigeria’s poor financial state.
Amaechi pointed out that the nation’s economy had continued to fall since he made the statement in December 2014.
“When I said sometime last year that Nigeria’s finances was in a dire strait, some people referred to me as an alarmist. Since I made that statement in December last year, the statutory allocation to the state has continued to decline.
“Now, almost all the states are finding it difficult to pay salaries. The state government owes civil servants their April salaries and pensioners’ four months’ salary arrears because the state does not have the money to pay them,” the governor said.
Amaechi explained that he decided to channel financial resources towards the completion of ongoing projects, which he promised would be completed before the end of his administration on May 29, 2015.
He said, “Some people have chosen to make an issue of the difficulty we are currently experiencing in paying the salaries of civil servants as well as the arrears of our retirees. It is not our making.
“No government will deliberately refuse to pay the salaries of its workers. We will pay as soon as we receive our share of our statutory monthly allocation from the Federal Government.
“It is not easy to joggle the payment of salaries and the implementation of capital projects that are actually geared towards developing the state, creating jobs and improving the economy of the state because more monies go into the society when you award contracts and pay the contractors on time so that they can also pay their workers on time.”
Punch reportage.

I remember recently l read somewhere that GMB told State Governors who went to negotiate a bailout for their States & he told them that to the best of his knowledge, Nigeria isn't owing them their allocation, telling them to make salaries their priority yet they squandered the money for their personal gains so what is this fool talking about?
DeleteHow can this stupid Amaechi prefer to pay for on going projects rather than pay salaries? A work man is entitled to his wages it's even in the bible. How do u expect them to feed their families? Oh u don't care as long as you and your cronies are ok. Others can go to hell? Shame on you Amaechi . Edo state is not owing workers cuz the put their priorities right. It's only stupid and useless governors that are owing salaries.
DeleteHmmmmmm
ReplyDeleteNo comment, just stating the obvious. Two hot women fighting for this man with kpomo lips, chai

ReplyDeleteStory for the gods.....
ReplyDeletelook at him even before this issue amaechi has been owing tima-riv ,iwofe road he awarded the contract to MCC he refused to release money for them to do the road so what is he saying
ReplyDelete#GODWIN™
Pls be sure of wat u r saying. Did Amaechi refuse to release money to MCC or MCC mismanaged funds given to them. The bank officials in charge of the advance payment guarantee for dat money are currently under fire as we speak.
DeleteOk leavemcc Has He not solD all the infrastructure in the state to himself? Who owns Olympia hotel? Whatever happened to the monorail and who owns spar? Amaechi is evil. Thats all
DeleteOloddo! I know who owns spar cos I manage that account and that has completely nothing to do with Amaechi. On the issue of monorail, I agree it wasn't a right one to embark on but will u believe me if I tell u those fighting Amaechi are the ones in charge of executing that contract? Olympia hotel is owned by M.M
DeleteAmaechi Amaechi all the time. If you can't pay civil servants in your state, explain to them why you couldn't and stop dragging federal government to your mess. You single handedly finanace Buhari's campaign now you here talking shit.... If Nigeria is broke, it is not in your place to tell us Mr. Governor. Please allow Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to do her job. This your diarrhea of the mouth needs urgent attention mcheeww.
ReplyDeleteU wish he single-handedly did ode!
DeleteDid u say single handedly finance Buhhari's campaign? Lmao! I kip saying it on dis blog that if u pple know how Buhari's campaign money came about una go shock. 90% of the campaign money came from a bank(names witheld) n d funds were fully guaranteed by Jagaban. On the issue of Iweala doing her job, was it not the same woman that said Naija wasn't broke but later revealed that they borrowed to pay staff salaries. So who is fooling who? Uptil now, some federal govt workers r still being owed. U pple shld stop blaming Amaechi for our financial mess. U pple were obviously bamboozled by Iweala's CV as an employee of world bank. Forgetting that theory is different from practical. The question u shld ask urself is how many of world bank policies or strategy worked in 3rd world countries like ours.

ReplyDeleteAfter 16 years of looting and misrule, the PDP junta is finally leaving behind an empty treasury and a broke country while the party's politicians have become exceedingly wealthy in both local and foreign currencies and having accounts and real estate located all over the world.
ReplyDeleteIt is pathetic that most of the state governors have failed to undertake revenue yielding projects that could yield foreign exchange for their states, but they would rather wait for federal government monthly allocations. The handwriting has been on the wall for many years now that crude oil is consistently losing its value but our politicians never cared. No country can ever truly develop this way.
if naija is broke now then when APC takes over leadership may 28 the broken state will be mended abi. why and how can amechi pay workers when he has funded APC campaign with state funds. what about your states IGR or the state of naija economy has affected your IGR too. pls stop looking for excuses, pay civil servants.
ReplyDeleteNigeria may be broke...
ReplyDeleteI don't know, it's left for the finance ministries to call it what it is but as NOI said earlier, the country is going downhill with our expenditure
I don't want to get started on the illegal money officials are siphoning hand in hand why shady contractors.Lets not get started on that cos it won't be a party thing. From GEJ to fashola to Amaechi to saraki to Akpabio and el rufai. All these people are tainted which is why I laugh when I hear one faction slating the other. And it's loads of funny when I hear one supporter say bad about the others like they are there or try to vindicate one.
From blatant increase of budgets, to awarding fictitious contracts to forming companies with shady directors(meanwhile they are the shadow directors- 1 man will award contract and still be director in the company he awarded it to), to how they sell fictitious shares and sell back companies to themselves, to outright bunkering of oil to unremitted funds and unaccounted pay cheques, or is it facilities that suddenly mysteriously dissapear? Inflation of budgets(a VC will say Matriculation will cost 20million where you rent your own gown and buy your own food) Or the ministers and perm secs that put their wives and 20 other ghost workers on payroll so that even after five years of retiring, every end of month, they get alerts. These ghost workers even get promoted and reap salaries more than real workers...pls, lets not get started because all this ain't our major problem.
The problem we face is lack of revenue generation. Tell me why states like Jigawa have nothing going for them? Even land locked regions can't find something to invest on or do? Nigerian financial sphere doesn't thrive on wealthy conglomerates owned by Nigerians but small scale business that will go downhill in a decade.
Exportation at its lowest ebb.
Manufacturing, almost non-existent. The companies even import manufactured goods from other power stable small african countries, leaving the consumers to pay the ultimate price.
Tourism, we can't bank on all the historical sites we have plus our superior heterogenous land marks. What don't we have? Seas, mountains, butte's, high altitude, savannah, forests, lakes, waterfalls? Tell me what we lack?
We have human resources, a mouth watering population and commensurate land mass for big industries, textile industries can locate here and produce. We have people to man a say, Marks and Spencer industrial plant. We have water. We have even temperate climates (Jos and co) if need be.
These things are resources big countries use to thrive in the 21st century. Acumen!
Gone are the days of Carlifornia gold rush! Natural resources make a stable country rich, not depending solely on them. Nigeria suffers from over dependence on oil which is a resource like coal and will fail one day.
We found oil. We lumped ourselves in 2 or 3 urban areas with no sanitation or population control then next we employ 6million workers doing nothing in ministries and offices doing nothing that adds value. Creating employment means employing people who come to work by 9am, listen to radio, lunchbreak, 3:50pm, they are gone and 30th of month, salary comes in. Or underemployed NYSC workers, great chance to create salaries for youth for 1year. Cool! But after that year, they are on their own. These jobs don't add much to government coffers. Non productive. On the same road, we have VIO,FRSC,Lastma,Police and co, duplication of office yet they will all get paid. We pay two seats of legislature.
Now oil market is failing, yet we rush to do elections and hand out bags of rice and money.
No austerity measures.
We turn around and claim to be broke.
Any surprises?
Useless man nigeria is broke but u fit pay girl 5million barawo
