A Family's Tragedy On Children's Day!

What you are about to read happened today in Port harcourt.....

''Stella my love please help me share this story for women who give their children self- medication without going to the hospital to find out properly what is actually wrong. I was so heartbroken today being children's day, I am still crying even though the kid is not related to me, I just can't control my emotion.

Today I went with a colleague of my who wanted to do a scan to know if her baby is developing well, because she has been having severe pains lower abdomen, immediately I stepped into the gate I saw a man holding a baby boy covered in wrapper, seated on a chair and crying, then a woman by the side and other people hanging around.

I asked the gate man what happened he said that the baby the man is holding is dead, he died even before they brought him and that they couldnt take his dead body into the hospital,I started weeping, shivers all over, I went close and inquired from a lady standing by what happened, she said the baby was not feeling well a week ago, he was running temperature that his mother said she did self medication and brought down his temperature, the sickness got serious and she took him to a chemist that didn't inquire what was wrong with the baby, just checked the baby's temperature and said it's Malaria and gave the baby malaria injections.

Yesterday the baby started vomiting and the mum still didn't take him to the hospital, until this morning the when the baby wasn't breathing again, she ran to her neighbour who is a pastor, and woman said immediately she carried the baby, she knew the baby was gone,  to fulfil all righteousness she told the dead baby's parents to enter the car so they could head to the hospital. On getting to the hospital the nurse who checked the baby outside and pronounced him dead.

I walked up to this dead baby's mum in tears, I asked her why?? Why?? Why?? She said ''aunty no money to carry my baby to hospital''

I said ''why you no go government general hospital @least''

she said ''Ma my husband na police man, no money for transport, nothing''

I said ''so it has gotten to this point what would you do now? You have lost your son''

I held her, prayed with her and her husband, they said they wanted to carry the dead baby to the village to bury him, I called a cab, that will take them from Port harcourt to Ogoni, gave all the money I had on me to them and left in tears.

Stella sorry for my typo errors but my emotions are having the best of me right now, but I just want you to share this story as a lesson to mother who will stay@home and give their sick children self- medication without knowing what they are treating.. it is bad..... Stop it.

Today is Childrens day and a family is mourning their child due to carelessness, please!!! please!! please!! Mothers in the house always pay close attention to your children's health, they are Gods divine gift to us''

Thanks *sobs*

    4. That is what they do, they stay home till it's too late then run to the hospital shouting doctor help with a dead child! The way you helped them with transport is the same way they would have gotten help with treatment at general hospital. If I tell you how many times I and other doctors have contributed money for patients eh? Even nurses save medicine rich patients don't want or beg the pharmacy for free medicine to at least commence treatment for indigent patients. Last 2years December I lost a child on xmas day that shouldn't have died, he was brought in already in shock his silly mother kept laughing when I asked her how long he'd been having diarrhea for, she said only 3 days. In this case money wasn't a problem, just ignorance. It's frustrating!

    5. Before everyone condemns the woman, until you are in her shoes you will not understand. Our health system is pathetic. Government owned hospital? Which one is functioning? No mother in Nigeria will allow her child die without doing anything. Why can't we be like other countries, treat first and ask for the money after. I am in the health sector. I have seen people die blc they could not afford to but Paracetamol. I remember when my dad was alive he was so sick and there was no money, he needed to eat we had pap but no sugar, we went to a vendor to buy 2 naira sugar but the lady refused. We went to a chemist to buy drugs for fever the chemist guy said no, he is going to market in the morning and need all the cash he can get. You need to see there are people suffering. That mother is dead in several places and her husband is the worst hit. When I was in medical school an old couple came to our hospital, the man could not pee from his penis. They were reffered to a specialist hospital. It was late. They passed the night. The man was given temporary medications and relief that night. When it was time to leave in the morning. The hospital refuses to allow them go till they pass their overnight hospital bill. I died watching them say they have only transport fare to the new hospital. When I couldn't bear seeing a man old enough to be my grandpa crying in pains, I paid their hospital bill with my last feeding fee. I am telling you this for u to know that the struggle is real. Who knows what happened at the specialist hospital where you will pay before seeing a Doctor? Asking that woman WHY? Killed her a million times. We need God's intervention. People are suffering. Hope the parents will forgive themselves.

    6. May the child's soul RIP. This corruption of a thing is deeply rooted, why won't someone that protects lives and properties be paid their salary and allowances? Just a few bucks would have saved the child's life. God have mercy.

    11. The truth is that poverty is responsible for so many deaths. Yes, governmment hospitals are cheaper but most of the time, you will only see a doctor after spending the whole day there. After seeing the doctor nko? That fee is just for consultation. You will still have to buy your drugs and pay for any tests that they want you to do. How many people can afford all that? That's why it looks as if they are trying to do shortcuts by going to chemists. It's not. It all boils down to poverty.

    12. Ĺet's excuse poverty for a bit. What of d educated ones that can afford to go to d hospital but won't? I'm tired of hearing vasoprin, lezotan, n d likes in our house (self medication) U hv hbp, u hv d monitoring device but u won't use it. U have strength to cook n clean d house from morning till night but u won't find 30 minutes a day to work out. U take coke like no man's business. U won't go to d hospital because u r afraid of what d doctor will find. Now which is better? Abeg let me stop here. D boy is in a better place free from all d pains. May God comfort his parents.

    2. Jesus. Even as adults we are guilty of self medication. If headache persists after the first day please go to the hospital. It may be something to do with ur BP ..and passing it as mere headache has killed people I know. That's why u hear people say "he slumped and died, nothing was wrong". NO...it's not true. Some signs had been showing itself but he ignored it.

May God rest the child's soul and keep us and our wards.

  7. It is well oh. RIP to the little one. As an adult I hate hospitals but make sure I take my kids to the hospital when they are sick. Luckily for me my neighbour is a paediatrician with university of Port Harcourt teaching hospital. The last time I could not go to the clinic cos it was very late @ night, had to go and knock on her door oh. She had to bring down his temperature and by morning na straight to the clinic. Please mothers and wards try and go to the hospital. See a doctor and if u can't afford the drugs in the hospital, take the prescription out and buy it. @ least that is better than self medication. And in rivers state here there are health centres all over the place. @ least obio health centre is there run by shell petroleum company. The chemist they went to was money not spent there? That money would have taken them to the nearest health centre. Transport fare is still normal in PH.

  24. Well,i keep saying it.... it is better to go to a hospital than self meditate...
Run to a hospital that can accommodate the little you have.

My mom used to make fun of I and hubby when our Lil girl was born... we were always in the hospital, asking one question or the other, clarification. I even had samples of different colours of poo-poo.

I used to carry my little log book... filled with questions... observations.. At the end of the day, only God saves, but we have an obligation to these little ones.

Am so sorry for the parents... I don't want to blame them... I will never know their condition or their situation.. Rip to that angel.

Every mother should have first aid kit at home and there's limit to self medication which shouldn't be more than paracetamol to control the temp. But going to the Chemist is a No. Pharmacist better pass chemist but hospital is the best.
