This is not a post for you to call out any Hospital...lets discuss the issue of private versus public hospitals in Nigeria and which is better.
If you have any experience to back up your claim of which is better,please add it and speak to the in coming Gen Buhari government if you have to....I am sure someone from his team might be reading....I AM SURE!

After reading about the Lady that died at Eko hospital I decided to
share this. I'm the poster 'I'm alive because he kept me'. When I had
that accident I was rushed to a private hospital by good Samaritans.
My family transferred to one of the best hospital in my area. The MD
there works in a teaching hospital. He was on ground and he charged us
a ridiculous sum maybe because I was in a very bad shape.
My folks just wanted me alive they bargain a little and 100,000 naira was
deducted from my bill. The doctor said he was charging this much he
will be bringing specialist from the teaching hospital. My folks were
misinformed that doctors in public hospitals were on strike while in
actual fact it was the nurses that were on strike.
Stella only one specialist came to examine me he didn't even treat o.
Though I was well taken care of and was given treatment they gave me
loads of antibiotics. They didn't fix my broken bones neither did they
drain the blood in my body. After 10 days they referred me to a
teaching hospital. They didn't refund any money they even said we are
to balance them. We had no choice than to comply.
When we got to the teaching hospital I was rushed to the emergency unit that same day my bones were fix and the next day they started drilling the blood. I had internal bleeding. Normally this takes 48hrs but because of the time I
spent at the private hospital the tube was kept for 4 days. Stella
remember the personally picture I Sent you, did you see the blood?
that was day 2. The private doctors knew I was bleeding that much
internally but they still kept me to justified the money they
collected.
The doctors at the public hospital were angry at private
hospital doctor for the unnecessary delay I had the best of care at the private hospital no doubt, the nurses and doctors were friendly and listen to my complains. They knew they couldn't treat me but they charged me and kept me for 10 days to justified.
After I left the emergency unit it now dawn on me that I was no longer
in a private hospital o. The nurses had resume work and them no send
you. The doctors there were better just try over complain to the
nurses first then you will hear the story of your life.
Why am I writing this? Stella just the way you treated the issue of
domestic violence please take the issue of hospitals in Nigeria
seriously I beg of you.
Its pathetic. Please let's talk about this and hope our in coming president will do something about it. We know he is a no nonsense man.
Looking back at everything I'm glad the private hospital kept me
unnecessarily that made me strong enough to face the stress of public
hospital. But this isn't how it ought to be.
Finally I will say if you are in this country please take your God seriously.

It's only God that will save us in this country. Medical facilities are the same bother private and public.

DeleteInfact these days, a lot of pregnant women register in both govt and private hospitals.
Govt hospitals are better equipped but lack good/friendly attitude from staff; most often the ccase they be acting like you are bugging them
Private hospitals on the other hand lack well seasoned consultants and surgeons aand they most often the case have those from general hosps come in on some specific days to attend to their patients.
So when there is an emergency, what happens?
Also not all private hospitals are better equipped.
Public hospitals are better in the sense that its like they are more experienced...

DeleteI'd rather go to a private hospital than a public hospital. Some hospitals like DIV, Nzamaye, Nisa Premier all in Abuja trust me can handle any situation without referring you anywhere.
they have different specialists and I'd rather pay for proper treatment and smiling faces than angry striking hospital workers.

D baby was taken to ICU immediately after birth cos he was having difficulties breathing. Nne, they didn't ve one equipment like that so they referred to Garki hospital but unfortunately, d poor boy couldn't make it. He passed out half way. I'm not disputing d fact that dey try bt want to correct d impression dat 'They can handle any situation without referring to a public hosp' Mbanu! No pun intended afterall dats wia I had my first 3kids before d stupid US embassy agreed to issue me a visa. I had d last set of babies in d states. I had my 1st child via CS in a government hospital. The doctors were amazing and they were always ready to listen to me. But the nurses were so rude and will never come to administer drugs or injections on time. My drip may get finished for 5 hours and nobody will be there to change it. I paid far less than I ll have paid in a private hospital. But if I had the money I will prefer a private hospital because of the way the nurses in govt hospital treated me.

Had a miscarriage whilst in law school, got rushed to the nearest public hospital (buwari). One particular nurse albeit efficient was extremely rude no sympathy at all but that was what I thought till I met the doctor that was supposed to do my evacuation......... The man not only looked like the devil but acted like one and his demon (another nurse) just made matters worse now this is a mother herself. I got there I demanded to see the doctor who was to do the evacuation and you wouldn't imagine the rudeness. Now I'm bleeding, and the the evil doctor and his nurse just pounced on me just because I wanted to be guided through how the procedure was to work oh. If it was going to be painful and if I needed to be anesthetized. His reaction made me know that he was most probably a quack and might do away with my womb so I refused he was going to touch me. I cried, shouted and pleaded to get another doctor. They sent me back to my ward which I gladly did. To confirm my fears one male nurse came to me and pleaded with me not to take any anaesthetic so as to be awake to know what was being done to be as per them not tampering with my womb. I knew something was off with that nurse and doctor the minute I saw them. So they said I should stay on my bed for some more days since I'm so high and mighty that I should be rejecting a whole doctor. I gladly rested on my bed till one doctor heard my story and came just minutes later. He was super friendly and even told me I didn't need anaesthesia and I don't remember feeling any pain. I think after spending three days in the hospital minus the drugs I bought myself and the evacuation I paid for my bill was 1,500 lol. What I didn't mention is that it seemed the nurses and doctor were particularly rude to me because my fiance wasn't there and I was of a different tribe because they weren't the same way to the lady that was beside me who was obviously from around there and had her husband and family with her.

I have friends and relatives who had very terrible experiences in public / government hospitals.
Their nonchalant attitude, rudeness, unnecessary delays and wickedness is beyond me.
I for one use a very good private hospital. They employ the services of experts from teaching/govt hospitals.
When I had my baby via CS, I had 4 doctors with me in the theatre. Each with a specific role to play.
All were highly experienced. 2 lived and practised for long in Saudi Arabia.
I didn't feel like I was having a CS that day.
They gisted with me, cracked jokes and generally made me feel "less scared".
The only problem I have with my hospital is that when it comes to money, them no dey hear 'go come'.
I remember when my MIL was booked for a surgery in one of the public hospitals here in Lagos. They gave her a date that was 6 months away for the surgery.
This is a woman who is in serious pains.
How can she live with the pains for 6 more months? Meanwhile it took us about 3 days to see a specialist oh.
We had to take her to a private hospital when we saw the date they gave us at the public hospital.
She was immediately booked for the weekend.
Lo and behold, the surgeon was the consultant we met at the teaching hospital.

As for me, I pray never to be admitted in a Nigerian government hospital (at least not now).
In short, I pray not to have business with any hospital sef.
I can only comfortably go to a govt hospital for consultation.
When I want to be properly taken care of, I know where to go biko.
May God protect us all from the failed medical system in Nigeria,Amen.
I pray 'President' Buhari looks into the medical sector immediately he assumes power.

Private hospitals are mostly owned by those specialists in government hospitals whom you don't get to see early enough. The price they charge in private hospitals eh, mtcheww....

I walked as fast as my legs could carry me back to the nurses table.. I called out for her,and with the sweetest of smiles told her that there was an error..
I told her I wanted to register for antenatal ooh.. kikiki nurse Eliza looked at me with a scowl on her face and said,Madam, you are among the lucky ones..ask this woman here the date she got. I turned and saw a lady with misty eyes.. I noticed other women looking sad and wondering which way..

Hmmmm my uncle was booked for prostrate enlargement surgery in Luth. For 2yrs strike made dem postpone and postpone. The man carried urine bag around for almost 2 yrs. Church contributed money for private! Lo and behold same Dr Ajayi in Luth operated him in the private in just 1 week.

DeleteI had keloids on my ear lobes in 2002 and needed plastic surgery.
Immediately i was transfered to a consultant my father started spending money , mother was spending, small me too was spending. The people that keep cards , the cleaners, the nurses were not left out.
When i get to Gbobi afrer surgery for follow up i was given vip treatment. My file would be passed before those that come in as early as 5am.
I was a small celeb ooo.
Money is key in government hospital. While the private that refered me was very good but didnt v capacity for plastic surgery.
The nurses see too many rich people. Am sure i wouldnt have gotten a better treatment in the private hospital.
Till date i have a cordial relatnshp with the staff in Gbobi that are yet to be transfered.
When am ill i prefer general hosp . My uncle is the chief lab scientist in 1 of d lagos general hosp. I get staff treatment to the extent that i hardly have to queeue even for Xray or scan.

ReplyDeleteHowever thankfully I have neither been to a public hospital nor a private hospital for any kind of ailment,xcept for when I went to general hospital in wuse abuja to remove a tooth,I was well attended to,the dentist was kind,and the doctors were very friendly..
When the doctors saw how scared I was,a very nice looking doctor held my hands through out the process..
Overall I'd give general hospital wuse an 8/10.

DeleteFrom experience, I will choose government hospital any time, any day, but the problem is that most of these hospitals are overcrowded and it takes ages to be able to book an appointment. Also, most doctors at government hospitals have their hospitals and when you visit them at government hospital, they give you address of their hospital and advise you to visit them there. If you ignore them, the next time you visit them at government hospital, they will practically frustrate you.

ReplyDeleteMy first experience in child bearing was at a teaching hospital. The Nurses showed me pepper eh. Even antenatal days was war. Nobody told me before I carried myself go private for VI.
The care was out of this world. They can pamper o but the bill was also our of this world.
Since then, I use private but with open eyes. Any unsavoury story about the hospital, I pick race and look for another one.
Can't compare bc I ve not really been hospitalised in a public hospital. In my own opinion, its the management of the govt dt I wil blame not the govt. Some specialists n Docs in govt hosp also run their own clinics wit less attention to govt property. Any govt establishment suffers the same neglect bc workers feel so non challant. I prefer private bc the neat enviroment, staff dedication to duty, quality assurance unit ;(where complaint are channelled), care n support and timely response that ve seen in private cannot be experienced in a govt setting.

ReplyDeleteYears ago during easter time, den I was very young my mum gave me a thousand naira to go out with my friends cos me and my friends in school planed to spend our easter at a shopping centre so we can also snap pictures, I ate alot and I also came back home with a takeaway meat pie.
I got home dat day ooo I was so healthy about few hours later I began to feel some stomach ache ooo I thought it was normal but later d pains increase, I started shouting crying, I couldn't stand nor seat cos of d pain.
My mum thought I was joking , she said if it was because of d plate I want to wash in d morning dat is making to start with dis tricks dat I will fail lolz
I started rolling on d floor I couldn't say a word but wen I realise dat my mum is not taking me serious I force my self to say, mummy please don't let me die, dis is unlike u, please am dieing help me, I will wash d plate.
She run to me and found out I wasn't joking. .. den she started shouting and crying with me oooo our neighbours came to our rescue. ... dey now took me to a private hospital (stella y u say make we no call name na?) Dis hospital is very expensive ooooo white men are doctors in dis hospital hummm
We got there around 11pm , dey said we've to register, my beloved step sis was with me, my neighbour went to do d registration why d nurse was attending to me.
Her first question was wen last did u see ur period? I Answer her, den she ask did u do D&C (me I b virgin dat time oo) hehehehehhehehe mum start dancing skelewu saying chickito has finish me, so dis is how u want to disgrace disgrace me, wat am I going to tell ur dad. Shuoo
I started shouting saying i no know man, man no know me lmao that's my nick name till date.
My step sis was defending me dat if I do such thing dat she will be d first to know.
Dis am saying I was still crying oooo after d registeration and everything dey ask my mum to pay a huge some of money before dey will proceed treatment, payment was made den I was admitted.

My sister almost died at Duro Soleye(Allen). I almost thought she was the one that sent in this narrative. She was later taken to a government hospital with mean nurses..My mom lost so much weight just attending to her..My sis nko? I cried when I saw my sis the first time..
I had my first baby, CS, in a private hospital in Ikeja as well(Don't want to mention the name). They have quite a large no of preggos in that hospital but when I was wheeled into what they call a theater, I prayed to God to deliver me from this one, that I would never make the mistake again..
I had my second child in US, same CS, but my God!!! THE DIFFERENCE IS ALARMING!!!
Naija, i wasn't allowed to stand up for 24 hrs after the procedure, I could not breastfeed my baby, I was on that spot till the next day..The pain was excruciating when I finally stood up!! The experience still haunts me..US, I stood up just few hours after the procedure, I was given Ice to chew immediately I was wheeled out of the theater..Naija, I did not eat for three days and they expected me to breast feed my baby? how? I had issues lactating cos my baby was not allowed to suck immediately!! That is a very known private hospital o..I can go on and on with the comparison!!
I will drink garri if I have to if I decide to have another baby..It will not be in Naija...
Nigeria is just messed up..Both private and public health sector needs a revamp!!

Private hospital jare. At Lasuth you have to take the urine or blood sample yourself for the rest... Can you imagine? The nurses in Govt hospitals are wicked. They don't care! Aah... Even if someone else is dying... A pregnant woman lost her life at IGando general hospital last week due to the non challant attitude of the nurses. She was rushed to the hospital by her husband obviously in labour and in a critical condition.. Crying and calling for help... The nurses on duty told her husband to get a card before they would even look at her... The confused husband didn't even know where to get the card.. He was begging for the wife to be attended to... For where! They ignored him. Stella the woman died.. Come see slaps on the faces of the nurses from the man.. Chai... He cries his eyes out... He said they were recently married and that was their first baby.. People around wept. Stella for me I will chose private hospital anytime anyway.

In my state; both are terrible. Because we have doctors working in public hospitals as owners of private ones. The difference is the high charges of private ones. Although, there are exceptional cases of outstanding care by some private hospitals.

I almost died in 2007.infact i died.
I woke up one thursday morning with excruciating pains,that left me unable to even stand up straight.before then i was a pro for cramps from my periods or toomuch intake of sugary things.my parents taught it was one of those days so my dad administered agbo with force as usual..........i threw up the min it touched my bowels and the pains intensified.
By 8pm or so....i was literally screaming from the pains and i had to be rushed to a private hospital around.that was where my suffer part 1 started.
These pple started treating what nobody knew,and writting tons and tons of drugs for my folks to buy(just about enough to start a chemist biz) next day they said i had ulcer.then one ojuju nurse kept saying i must have had an abortion.she did everything to make me confess to it.spending 2nights already and pain on the worst level i ever experienced o.
So on the 3rd day when they prolly noticed i could die there,they askd for me to be transferred.i was to a state hospital and those ones started thier serenren.sha sha sha,at last one angel of a doctor took a look at me and guessed what he felt was wrong,a scan haf to be done,(state hospital didt have the means) i had to be wheeled out to a lab around.
My pple at the long end,baby was suffering from ruptured appendixitis.come and see action....as in i had to be immediately flown into the theatre.what was supposed to be a minor operation left the mid section of my tummy butchered.
As in......i died.the healing process nko?took weeks before i could eat a normal meal.
Only God knows what would have been my story if i remained in the so called reputable private hospital.
Sometimes private hospitals are good, sometimes public hospitals are good, depending on the ailment. The strategy i use is that, I will go to public hospital to see the consultant and let my ailment be diagnosed. Then I will ask around if he has a hospital, which I will use. It will be expensive but I will be getting the best of both sides.

Both av dia shortcomings, private re expensive n most times d doctors even though dey don't know how to treat ur ailment, will still keep u for money and when dey see dt ur death is near, dey will refer u to a govt hospital in which case most patience die on dia way to d govt hospital. I prefer govt hospitals to private bcause of facilities and qualified staff, but the nurses shar get training in bad mouth. what i do when i go to hospital am ready with small give aways no matter how little they dont ask bfore i say take buy recharge card, take 100 buy pure water etc bfore you know my folder don dey on top. during anti natal checks i dont join the line bcause i know what the nurses want they even ask whether l want to wait for consultant or any dr? i always see either dr Akani/Lolomari bcause na wednesday clinic i dey attend for upth. look beyound their bad mouth n befriend them and you re good to go. Another thing dont look down on any of them whether ward attendant act like mumu until they run around you for chicken change n you get what you want shikena.

ReplyDeleteIts not like i got the best treatment in the state hospital but it was obvious the people in charge knew what they where doing.but in the private hospital i could see the confused look on thier faces as they scurried in and out with trays.
Bet why are the nurses in govt hospital so mean?as in wickedly mean.......i suffered o.
Common appendix i took about 2months to heal.and almost 1 in the hospital and a big scar on my once fine belle.and spent about 500k.60% of which went off at the private hospital.

Delta state has the best government hospitals in the country. That is one sector I can give Uduaghan a pass mark for. Other sectors... nahhhh he didn't really do anything. Maybe because he's a medical Doctor. So I'll say we have it pretty good in Delta when it comes to healthcare.

Most public hospitals esp teaching hospitals have equipments but because it is a teaching Hospital, cases which should be handled by a consultant will be left for students.
You need to know someone above for a consultant to see you in some critical cases.
Alot of people say public nurses and other staffs are wicked(somehow true) because of very bad welfare, working under very unconducive working environment and all. No job satisfaction in anyway.
They are but a number of public hospitals where things work perfectly fine, this has so much to depend on the management of the hospital.
Truth be told, private hospitals is solely business.
Management is interested in your money and that's all. Little wonder why public hospitals specialists will refer you to their clinics???
They will say they can't see more than five patients in a day, run back to their centre and see thousands of patients the same day.
In all, public hospitals should remain the best because they have specialist in different fields which should readily be available.
Aside that, a very good private hospital in Naija which will satisfy your every need will be stupidly exorbitant. HOW MANY NIGERIANS CAN AFFORD IT???

I prefer govt hospital to private any day, but not just any public hospital, the tertiary hospitals are better anytime. Making prescription witout test is most common in private hospital. Federal medical center in Abeokuta has very dutifull, excellent and respectfull staff, the only problem with most tertiary govt hospital is limited facilities and strike. ReplyDeleteI was induced and in labour at d govt hospital. When my waters broke I called the nurses to come n check. They all laughed and said I'm a 1st timer, breaking of water doesn't mean the baby's head is out. I was unattended to for over an hour until the dr came. He was so mad at them. My baby was no longer breathing by then because he had already passed faeces in the belly. Thank God I had an emergency CS

When I was in my 2nd trimester I started having bad cramps. Out of fear I and hubby rushed to the hospital . after complaining to the doc you won't beleive he prescribed tramadol for a pregnant woman. 2 tablets 3 times daily. Only for me to discover after I left the hospital that all I needed was pcm and rest. Thank God I did t take it. This happend @ a govt hospital.
ReplyDeleteNow in my 3rd trimester I went for my final scan result and I was told that they did t see any baby all they can see was a big fibriod.( the devil is a liar) I was booked for cs.. This happened @ a private hospital.
3days after I went into labor and had the most adorable baby. No cs no sign of fibriod.
I birth my baby @ a navy hospital. And I was given maximum care. Even though they have their own shortcomings.
Moral of my story doctors are not God or magicians. Both govt and private hospitals have their issues. Health care system in Nigeria is crazy.
When next u visit the hospital pray for the docs and all staff u will come in contact with. For wisdom to to do right.
Nigeria is my country and change has come.

Private hospitals are a bunch of armed robbers. In December 2013 I slipped and fell down my back stairs while going to put on my generator. My arm hit the metal staircase and I actually saw the bone of my arm bend. I was rushed to my hospital which is a private hospital- Premier Specialists Medical Centre, located in Victoria Island. I had been using Premier for a number of years but had never had any serious emergency, just regular malaria, fever etc. My fall happened very early in the morning and I arrived at the hospital at about 5am. When I got there I was told none of the consultants was available, the only doctors available at that time were house officers. I was in sooooo much pain and they just loaded me with pain killers and told me to wait till 8am when the regular doctors would have resumed. My dear no doctor attended to me till like 9am, by then I was writhing in pain. When the doctor eventually came I was told they would need to contact their external orthopedic consultant from igbobi as Premier did not have an in-house orthopedic surgeon. When I heard this I was a bit glad as I felt that with a consultant from igbobi, I was certain to be assured of good treatment, considering igbobi is the go-to place for anything to do with bone treatment. Stella, the external consultant did not arrive till like 1pm. This is a hospital I arrived at 5 am. Anyway when he eventually came, I was asked to conduct some x-rays. After reviewing the x-rays he said he could see a fracture and that I would need to go into the theatre and be put under anesthetic so he could reset the arm, as it would be too painful for me if he reset it while I was conscious. That's how I was wheeled into the theatre and put to sleep, when I awoke, my hand had been reset and was wrapped in a cast. The orthopedic surgeon then told me that I would have to wear the cast for 3 weeks, and that I should return in 4 days for another x-ray. He also mentioned that he suspected that I might require surgery on the arm to correct a crack, but that when I returned in 4 days’ time and he reviews the x-ray, he would be sure. My dear I returned in four days and had the x-ray done, and the ortho surgeon stated that I definitely needed surgery. I remember asking him that why wasn't the surgery done the first day I was in the hospital. That what this means is that I would wear the cast for three weeks, then have the surgery, then wear a cast again. I felt this was unprofessional. He stated that he didn't see the crack initially, and there is only one hospital in the entire Nigeria that has the type of machinery that would enable you immediately see the crack. I was dumbfounded. He told me to continue wearing the cast, and come back to take it off in 3 weeks, and that he was travelling for Christmas, so he would perform the surgery in January after the yuletide break.

ReplyDeleteI then asked him, isn't the surgery urgent, and shouldn't I have it immediately the cast comes off. He answered oh it’s not that urgent, that I could wait till January, that no harm done. He stated that the type of surgery he would conduct was called excision of the radial head. My dear I carried the cast for the 3 weeks and went back to the hospital to take it off. I was told that the ortho surgeon had travelled and wouldn't be back till January. My dear like 2 days after the cast came off this was like December 22nd, I was in unbelievable pain. It was like my arm was on fire. When I contacted the hospital I was told to keep on taking the pain medication. Meanwhile Premier Specialist had charged me a bill of over N500,000. Infact they didn't touch me until i had made a deposit. When I would have had the surgery, my bill would shoot up to almost N1 million. After I while, I asked myself, what on earth am I doing, this is how I will sit here and between premier and their external consultant, I will lose my arm. My mother is based in New-York, and 2 of my sisters live in the states. When I initially fell, they had wanted me to come over for proper diagnosis and treatment but I felt it would be a waste of money. However, after I saw the kind of back and forth I was getting in Nigeria, I decided to travel, however this Christmas period and not only were tickets sooooo expensive, I also couldn't even get a flight out. The earliest flight I was able to book was in the 2nd week of January. Luckily my sister had booked an appointment with a doctor in New-York, so once I arrived America I saw the doctor the next day. First of all an x-ray was conducted and after viewing the x-ray, the doctor told me that my bone got broken when I fell, and it was criminal for the doctor in Nigeria to have kept my broken bone in a cast for 3 weeks without properly addressing it as it only made everything worse. He also said that the surgery that the doctor wanted to conduct on me in Nigeria i.e. excision of the radial head, was an outdated procedure and that particular surgery was no longer being carried out in America since the 1980s, and he was shocked that any doctor could be recommending such a surgery in 2014. Can you just imagine? He then told me that he would need to conduct surgery on my arm the very next day. Stella, that is how I went in for surgery, that lasted over 5 hours. The doctor said by the time he opened my arm and got in, he was shocked at the level of damage that had been done to the arm and how bad things were. My ligaments were all destroyed and my radial head which is the elbow bone was totally gone. He had to take out my elbow bone, and put in a prosthetic, which I will have for the rest of my life. Stella, it wasn't a joke. The doctor also said that if the procedure had been properly managed from the onset, i.e. a proper surgery carried out immediately I fell, the procedure would have been a very plain vanilla procedure. But because over a month had passed since I first fell, and my broken bone was put in a cast for 3 weeks, and even after the cast was taken off, the arm was still left without any proper treatment, too much damage had already been done. In short, I had to have another surgery 3 months after the initial surgery to assist with mobility in my arm, and I also had to undergo 4 months of physiotherapy.

ReplyDeleteAll this because Premier Specialist Hospital and Dr. Popoola their external consultant could not properly carry out the right diagnosis and treatment for a simple fall. This is upon the over N500,000 I paid to Premier. As you know, treatment in America is not cheap. For the two surgeries I had in New-York, as well as the 4 month physiotherapy sessions, I spent over $40,000. Yes o, over Forty thousand DOLLARS, apart from the N500,000 I had already spent in Nigeria. In all this I just thank God that I had the opportunity and the financial means to go abroad and get myself treated. So many people in Nigeria are not that lucky, rather they are forced to contend with these rogues that call themselves private hospitals that overcharge you for their poor and shoddy treatment. I thank God anyway. My arm will never be 100% the same and like I mentioned already, in place of my elbow bone is a prosthetic that I will wear for the rest of my life, but it could have been worse. Like my American doctor said, if I had left them to conduct the surgery in Nigeria, I would definitely have lost my arm. A number of people told me to sue Premier Hospital but we all know what the Nigerian legal system is like. I have left Premier and Dr. Popoola to God, as they will definitely get the Karma that is waiting for them.

$40k What for one arm? God bless great Britain God bless the NHS. My friend who has a hole in his heart receives very expensive treatment costing over £8k every two weeks free of charge here in the UK. They are even advising him to stop working so as to be getting benefits but he refused.

ReplyDeleteAs a medical student and house officer in LUTH, I always wondered why any right thinking person will come to LUTH for treatment. Facilities were non-existent and when available, were embarrassingly out of date. Staff morale was low, and although the doctors were often able to overcome this and still show compassion, the nurses came across as nasty and insensitive, when in reality, they were simply overworked and underpaid.
Then I had my first baby, and having delivered babies and assisted in Caesarean sections as a house officer, I was certain in my mind that I could never have my baby in a government hospital. How stupid I was. I registered for antenatal in a so called reputable private hospital in Ikeja. All went well during my antenatal. The problem started when my pregnancy progressed beyond my due date and I had to be induced. I had the worst childbirth experience ever, including third degree tears and the use of uterine fundal pressure in the final stages of labour - a practice that we were clearly taught in med school never to use. The experience was so bad that I couldn't bond with my baby in the first few days. Conclusion below.........
My first experience with LUTH was antenatal cos I was referred to a consultant genealogist who has experience with women with high risk pregnancies....I only endured the rubbish cos I knew I would only be seeing them for a short period.....first of all to give me a medical report was an embarrassing episode. The doctor first demands your file from medical records, write the report on letter headed paper, send to medical records for endorsement from medical director bla bla bla... Apart from taking more than a week, the doctor was looking for LUTH letter headed paper like gold...lol...
ReplyDelete2) my clinic days were Tuesday's at 7.30am but most times We don't see the doctor till btw 12-3pm...they start with some long talks which in my opinion could be avoided by just giving out leaflets to women....I hear in some hospitals the women sing some songs during clinic days..lol
3) during your visit you have to buy specimen bottles for urine samples for 50 naira with one woman who had a table by the toilet outside the building.... I was informed that those specimen bottles are supplied by contractors and should be part of what you are given when you pay maternity fees...
4) during the period of my visits their was always no light on the maternity floor and even the whole building.
5) the toilets were always dark and no light..when I wanted to wee I will open the door so light can come in, bend slightly over the toilet sit while at the same time holding my handbag cos no place to keep your bag and the tot of my bag falling....lol.....did I mention there was always water on the floor and the Taps were dry...so will use my water to wash my hands then my sanitizer which was always in my bag (it was during Ebola period self)...
6) to make any payments u had to collect receipts from a cashier on that floor, then go downstairs and pay to the main cashier who will now give you another receipt with stamp before you go back upstairs....of course if no light na stairs u go climb with all the fatigue of pregnancy....
Yes the consultants are experienced and very good cos the one I was seeing came highly recommended cos he was German trained and have been in LUTH about 30 years....but the conditions are appalling.. The nurses are so rude and mean..they always have this air of " you are at my mercy" when you ask questions they look at you like you are feeling you know too much...just don't know why they are always angry with humanity....lol...everything you have to buy buy buy......if you are looking for experience and following routine procedures, equipment tho not up to date for some then it's govt hospitals, but u need a trailer load of patience and money to buy buy......sadly all that expenses is still a lot for some women , like most of the scans we had to do was in some private hospitals and they were expensive....you can imagine women in rural areas who have high risk pregnancies and can't afford some of those examinations? Will it not be only devine intervention or local birth attendants who will improvise? People die needlessly in this country and am always so pained when women die during childbirth...
As for the private companies it's all money money...all the doctors know is to treat malaria...lol....they will charge the companies like 5k to treat malaria and when the patient is going home it's just paracetamol and vitamin c...as for me I read up and ask questions and also demand certain test..also I ask questions concerning medications they give me and treatments they wanna give.....,we still have a long way to go with health care delivery in this country but sadly cos most of those in power can afford to still travel out for medical treatment not much is being achieved.....let's hope APC will begin to make a difference.....

ReplyDeleteI learnt from that experience that the main difference between government and private hospital in Nigeria was the quality of staff. Government hospital doctors and nurses, by virtue of the sheer volume of cases they see daily, are much more experienced, because practice does indeed make perfect. Private hospitals are staffed by only one or two experienced medics, the rest of the staff don't know jack.
And then I experienced government hospitals in the UK as a doctor and twice as a patient, post Caesareans. The difference is as stark as night and day!
Nigeria has a long way to go, both government and private hospitals.
FastForward to the rest of my antenatal/ postnatal care in the UK.....no need to write much on the difference cos some people here will now start insulting me like someone who called me an idiot for wanting to have my next delivery abroad...lol...

ReplyDeleteBoth public and private hospitals are bad in Nigeria, but if you need specialist care with loads of experience I would say go to a public hospital. I lost my cousin's wife at a private hospital during a repeat scheduled c section, the guy was not experienced and killed the woman just like that. I believe she might have survived if she had gone to a public hospital. I also have negative experiences with private hospitals. It is well. God help us all
ReplyDeleteHad a miscarriage whilst in law school, got rushed to the nearest public hospital (buwari). One particular nurse albeit efficient was extremely rude no sympathy at all but that was what I thought till I met the doctor that was supposed to do my evacuation......... The man not only looked like the devil but acted like one and his demon (another nurse) just made matters worse now this is a mother herself. I got there I demanded to see the doctor who was to do the evacuation and you wouldn't imagine the rudeness. Now I'm bleeding, and the the evil doctor and his nurse just pounced on me just because I wanted to be guided through how the procedure was to work oh. If it was going to be painful and if I needed to be anesthetized. His reaction made me know that he was most probably a quack and might do away with my womb so I refused he was going to touch me. I cried, shouted and pleaded to get another doctor. They sent me back to my ward which I gladly did. To confirm my fears one male nurse came to me and pleaded with me not to take any anaesthetic so as to be awake to know what was being done to be as per them not tampering with my womb. I knew something was off with that nurse and doctor the minute I saw them. So they said I should stay on my bed for some more days since I'm so high and mighty that I should be rejecting a whole doctor. I gladly rested on my bed till one doctor heard my story and came just minutes later. He was super friendly and even told me I didn't need anaesthesia and I don't remember feeling any pain. I think after spending three days in the hospital minus the drugs I bought myself and the evacuation I paid for my bill was 1,500 lol. What I didn't mention is that it seemed the nurses and doctor were particularly rude to me because my fiance wasn't there and I was of a different tribe because they weren't the same way to the lady that was beside me who was obviously from around there and had her husband and family with her.

Some private hospitals are very neat nd very good nd hv good doctors u won't even kw u're in the hospital. My sister goes for ante natal by 5am, one day she told the abou doctor her problem and he said what do u want me to do.

From experience, I will always give this advise:

If your medical case is not an emergency, walk into a Teaching Hospital..Not a General Hospital o, Teaching Hospital and ask to see the Professor in Charge of the Department of the type of health care you want. eg. Pediatric, Maxilofacial, O&G, Cardiology etc...Talk to him and ask him to treat you rivately...You will be surprised that treatments in their private hospitals are cheap and you will be assured of the best and latest knowledge and treatments.
2. If your case is an emergency, rush to a private hospital, get emergency first aid treatment, and do the above or have your relatives do it for you...
My two Chronicles of Hope was as a result of the above steps.
Not all doctors are doctors o...like you and I, many came out with third class and even pass and cant even treat themselves to save their lives and these ones are the ones that will look all tush and fancy and charge large bills...the hood does not make a monk, so does the jacket not make a doctor neither does a fancy building make a great hospital!
For your info,Mr adviser,doctors do not graduate as second,third or pass grade. It's either you pass or fail..or u have a distinction,which is uncommon. If u fail u repeat the exams or are thrown out of med school. So pls be informed.
