Nanny Demands N15m For Kidnapped Lagos Children

A nanny, Mary Akinloye, who allegedly kidnapped three kids in the Surulere area of Lagos State has demanded N15m from the victim’s parents, PUNCH Metro has learnt.
Our correspondent learnt that the family was contacted on Thursday by the suspect and others, who were suspected to be members of her group. They were said to have demanded the N15m as ransom.

PUNCH Metro had reported on Wednesday that the Orekoya family had posted information on OLX, an online sales portal, seeking the service of a nanny.
Our correspondent reported that Akinloye indicated interest and gave the Orekoyas the contacts of two people who she said were her relatives.

It was reported that the family agreed to formalilse documentation with the purported relatives before the week ran out.
After the 23-year-old resumed for work on Tuesday, she was said to have taken the three children ─ Aderomola (11 months old), Adedamola (4 years old), Demola (6 years old) ─ out, while their parents were away.

She had since not returned.

A family friend, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the kidnappers contacted the family and demanded N15m on Thursday.
The information was confirmed by another friend who put up the post on a social medium, Facebook.
He said, “Is it a crime to employ a house help? The kidnappers have demanded N15m.”

Efforts to reach the family were abortive as they continued to reject calls made to their lines.
They also did not reply to three text messages sent to them on the matter.
The Police Public Relations, Kenneth Nwosu, said investigations were on.
He said, “Investigations are on and that is all I can say for now.

“There are things you do that can jeopardise investigation.
“What is important in a case like this is to ensure that the children are returned hale and hearty. There are information you may have and if you disclose it, you could break the line of communication. So, we are still on the matter to ensure the safe return of the kids.”

I am so angry!!!

Everything is just wrong with Nigeria!

and WTF is the police doing?why are they not tracking these thieves? What is going on?

God please let nothing happen to those kids,Return them home and let their abductors be shamed and openly disgraced!
That F**KING WEBSITE SHOULD BE CLOSED OR THE OWNERS ARRESTED!

I am just so upset!!

  3. Stella how can they shut down OLX? OLX is to Nigerians what Gumtree is to Australians.
People put their ads up there on their own, it's not the responsibility of the owner of the website to provide safety for whoever uses the website. It's a buying and selling website for crying out loud.

On the other hand, say No to househelps!

    5. The good news in the midst of the sad news when kidnapping occurs is that there's a sudden respite when abductors communicate and seek ransom.

At least one is relieved to know what they want. Now the danger is whether they'll be patient enough to allow u gather resources, or even allow u pay what u can. The better news is that without a doubt they'll take care of those kids. Trust me, they feed them and usually have females capable enough to nurse children under their hold. Yes a mother would rather have her child than have them with strangers. But in a situation like this if u don't want to die of high BP cos of the unknown, think about how much the abductors want the money more than the kids, and for that they'll never hurt them if all is played out well.

    1. In a system that works with basic amenities, well but in this naija where almost women are higher earners and struggle to keep the family, its harder not working. Don't blame working women, we used to have family assistance but now everyone is a suspect even extended families, women now rely on househelps. I used to think that naija women were unreasonable relying on househelps cos I could cope where I lived then until I lived in naija and understood their plight. Yes, there was some element of carelessness but the system aids these evils. God have mercy for thy namesake .. Ameeen. Sharon

WHO GETS A MAID OLX, I don't really understand who does that. To even buy clothes/shoes on-line in Nigeria,i hesitate. I bout one shoe and when it came it was of such low quality to d pics I saw.
Some of us women have become so lazy, even go as far as ordering soups on-line.
I understand we are all career women, but smtimes somethings have just got to give. This cld as well happened to any1 cos a maid uv even hired for 10yrs can suddenly join a bad crew and do this. Mother's if a particular job is affecting your family life, pls look for smthn less demanding. I recently left the bank after 5yrs to work smwe'r more flexible,it took me 1yr to get it, but in the end was worth this.

  49. The nanny must be a very wicked soul to have betrayed the trust of her employers. I wonder how some people 'kill' the voice of their conscience. The investigation can be started by digging through the evil nanny's call log using access from her network provider...although I won't be surprised if her team made her use a hidden line for communication in order to outsmart the police. That aside, the Nigerian police are an incredible bunch of people. They won't do any thing until the family 'mobilizes' them by paying every single bill required for the investigation. From paying for recharge cards, fueling their vehicle to providing transport and feeding money for the investigating officers. It's shameful. I hope the missing kids get returned to their parents without harm.

  54. Stella, I disagree. The website has nothing to do with this. OLX is just a connecting point for buyers and sellers. until now, I did not know anyone could 'order' house helps online.

I have sold something via OLX before and before the buyer picked the item, she did all her due diligence- vigorous due diligence and I dint mind cos it was expected. We were total strangers, she had no reason to trust me and I had no reason to trust her as well. Mind you, this was an item not a human being.

Not to sound like I am apportioning blames, getting a house-help from a site today and leaving her with your children the next day, get as e be sha but e don happen, na to find solution.

I pray that God will see them through this period and grant them the wisdom they need to handle these kidnappers. In the end, I hope they don't just recover the kids but arrest the kidnappers.

I really doubt cos I have gotten 1 from a trusted lady that a lot of people use and the guy later confided that he doesn't know the woman from Adam and she can't really trace him home he just went to her cos she's an agent and getting a job will be faster that way.

  69. First feel sorry for the parents and pray they get their kids back safe.

But then why should the website be closed???? Who goes online to find a maid without back ground check?

If both parents are working and have to leave their kids at home alone with a maid/nanny then some safety precautions should be put in place.

Like rent a house a an estate that restricts movement of visitors in and out (where you have to call the gate for visitors access), make sure your gatemen know you nanny and should never allow her out without a call from you even when you are home!!

And you should never employ a nanny/maid that can find their way to your house alone, always make sure someone brings them to you or better still find time to go and pick them up yourself..that way you know the agent's house or office.

It is always better to get the ones without mobile phones, buy them a cheap phone when they get to your house, and search their bags to see what they are bringing into your house before you let them sleep even one night. Some of these people even come with charms. Invest in a CCTV, why are you were gold and fine cloths if your safety and that of your family is not guaranteed..set your priorities right.

Whatever you do, follow your mind!! The more calculated/perfect a maid looks or sounds, the more they are likely to be a fraudster.

Work is important but the satefy of your child should be paramount.

Its the whole system that is messed up ans this could happen even if she got the mAid from her ancestors. She must have been desperate to do that and then go ahead to leave the kids alone with her in just a day. She is already killing herself over her mistakes lets be sympathetic to her plight and continue to pray for the safe return of her children.

  80. Madam stella you might be angry, but don't bring down another man's hustle because an unfortunate incident happened via their website. What if you were the owner of OLX? And by the way there is a caveat that you should verify whatever product or service you are buying.my prayer is that God Almighty protects these kids wherever they are and punish the criminals. And I feel the online media should reduce the investigations info they give out so as not to frustrate the work of law enforcement agents. kidnappers have access to the internet too

  81. Ha Stella, OLX should not be blamed o. They are only there to provide a platform for buyers and sellers to meet. Anything beyond that, you need to use your church mind. With all the terrible happenings, why would anyone take home a virtual stranger? Even the people you know well and can trace back to their great grandparents, you still have to careful with when it comes minding kids. How much more some one you just met? and the next day you leave your kids with her alone?! May God have mercy and forgive our errors o.

I pray the police will have intelligent ideas that they can execute sha. Some years back, we were looking for a friend who disappeared. The police couldnt (or didnt want to) come up with any suggestions o. We had to be telling them to trace his last calls from Telcos and check bank account for activities and check ATM camera because withdrawals were made after his disappearance. They were so sluggish about the whole thing and he was never found. Because of the bad reputation the NPF have, people opt to pay ransoms o cos extracting the kidnapped successfully would be a miracle! I pray these kidnappers are all caught in Jesus name.

  82. I feel a bit relieved... They are safe...15m???
The heartless maid came with a mission, regardless if she was left alone with the kids for the first time or not...she would have found any way to get them out of the house.
I pray, they are apprehended, and the kids are well taken care of.

  84. Stella chelukewa so if in all of these your matchmaking scheme,a murderer is hooked to a lady or vice versa, you will close down your Website? Olx is in no way responsible for what happened to those kids.I sympathise with the parents because they will be going through traumatic times.God help us

  85. Please someone should advice Busayo to personally go and contact the MD or Chairman of UBA and ask them to assist her , I am sure that the Top Management of the Bank will be able to help her and raise part if not all of the funds, time is running out and every second that passes, the kids lives are in danger.
Let's all keep praying and l trust God for divine protection. The children will come out alive, but their mum should make definite and fast move to get the ransome. It is well!
