''It just rained ice in Abuja . It was such an exciting thing for me to witness for the first time in Nigeria.
It was a really serious down pour of ice . I had to sneak out to the corridor to get one as souvenir. Lol''
Ice rain in Nigeria????..I am shell shocked!
What is going on?
I dont want to say this but it will be disastrous if it happens to snow in Nigeria!
Why do I find this hard to believe?
ReplyDeletelol
This isn't new na. I experienced it in Calabar some 3-4 years back. So it's not strange to me.
DeleteHard to believe? It is a rare occurrence but not a surprising one. Every raining season I witnessed in my lifetime in Nigeria, it rains ice at least once. Whether I'm in Jos, Kaduna or Abuja.
DeleteI once witnessed this as a child, very possible. It was also quite heavy and sustained, so i'm not one bit shocked.
DeleteClick my name for all your celebration cakes and cupcakes, cheers

In terms of lawmakers’ salaries as a ratio of GDP
per capita, the gap is even much wider. While the
salary of a Nigerian lawmaker is 116 times the
country’s GDP per person, that of a British
member of parliament is just 2.7 times.
The average salary of Nigerian worker based on
the national minimum wage is N18,000.00, So,
the yearly salary is N18,000.00 x 12 =
N216,000.00 ($1,333.00)
Remember, Yearly Salary of Nigerian Senator =
$2,183,685.00.
Proportion: $2,183,685.00/$1,333.00 = 1,638
It will take an average Nigerian worker 1,638
years to earn the yearly salary of a Nigerian
Senator.

them beginning with those thieves at the National
Assembly. We the Nigeria youth want the National Assembly Annum to be cut to $70,000.00. Per yearly. Thank you.
It happens a lot, this is not d first time nah.

DeleteIts surprising to me that people find this strange,in my days at FGGC Gusau it was a very common occurence, those who grew up in that axis of the north will know what I am talking about
DeleteSo the whole of Abuja is lying then? Its not the first time its happening in Nigeria so not a new thing!

DeleteThis is not surprising, Ice fall in the north when it rains most times. It happened a lot during my childhood days in the north especially in Jos.
DeleteIt's for real.
DeleteAbuja's an extremist!
Everthing's in excess.
I've seen a pile of ice-cubes in front of my house after a heavy rain fall n that was about 4yrs ago.
It's a regular occurrence cos i've witnessed it about 3 times since then.
Oh pls they r called hailstones and it happens quite often in Jos. I guess its exciting for those who have not seen it b4
DeleteNot new, I experienced it in my secondary sch Compro, Aiyetoro in Ogun state many years ago and also in Kano during youth service. It's regular in Jos I heard
DeleteWow , I remember when I was a little girl, we were playing in the rain with loads of ice falling down that was was in the 80s though .
DeleteI've withnessed this before nd that was 5yrs ago nothing new..btw wherre in abuja did this happen? Cuz my area is as dry as. Sahara desert
Delete....all the time it raiined in jos in the 80s,they were dese hailstones, and we enjoyed playing in them whenever we were dia for holidays, dont know why all dat has stopped.and talking abt snow,in Panskin local govt of Plateau state, heavy snow used to fall up until d 90s.so we don see all dese things before na,maybe depletion of d ozone layer made them stop...missing dose days.
DeleteBtw which part of abj rained ice and I didn't see hear?hmmm!BV hope d ice isn't from ur fridge as Wide eye said.lol!
I also witnessed while growing up...nothing new under the sun.
DeleteStella, is it now breaking news??? Chai
DeleteIce rain ko ni!!!! IT IS CALLED HAIL not ice rain. Knowledge is power and Google is your friend. This was quite common growing up in Enugu. The ice varies in size and can be quite painful if it hits your skin.
DeleteLol ok
ReplyDeleteI don't believe tho
Abeg nothing serz, just hailstones.
DeleteIt rained ice last year too
DeleteI don't doubt it
DeleteExperienced this ice rain as a child during one'f those visits to villa
It looked just like ice block*, not snow flakes
Icy rain is not a new thing in Abuja. Once there is serious rain it mostly happen.
DeleteOya start. Its our enemies abi????
DeleteIt's a very normal thing in jos. Always raining hailstones.
DeleteIt happened in Enugu sometime around '01 '02
DeleteWhy would it be disastrous if it snows? You would just get ready by buying winter clothes n shoes ni.
ReplyDeleteThis country is getting boring For me Stella!
So what do u want Stella to do about your bored state?
DeleteOf course it would be disastrous because houses back home are mostly built with bricks... It would take forever to heat up those houses.
DeleteBabe, what part of Toronto do u live in? We should hang out. Toronto can be boring if u don't have the right friends
DeleteStella it won't be such a bad idea if it snows in Nigeria biko. This heat is too much...can't even sleep at night gosh
DeleteThis is even small ice, ice fell in abeokuta as rain bout 3years back and it was way bigger than this. I still have the picture of it
ReplyDeleteWonders shall never end.
ReplyDeleteIce what!
ReplyDeleteAfi Souvenir
lmao
Stella!!! Which one is ice rain again??? Even in Kaduna, this type of hailstones used to occur every now and then. This is not new at all. These are simply pellets of frozen rain which fall in showers from cumulonimbus clouds. Rising air will often reach a point in the atmosphere that is below freezing (hence, ice will form).
ReplyDeleteSoooooo true! I remember my days in Queen Amina Girls College, Kakuri, Kaduna. Ice rained so much that we(students) had to place buckets in strategic points just to gather large quantities.
DeleteSome crazy students used The ice they gathered to make ice-water tea! Lol
Soo what are u now saying????..the same thing???..it all boils down to ice rain nau
DeleteSee English.
DeleteKeep the grammar for corner. We grew up knowing this as ice rain and the word ice rain give a rush to memories associated with that period in time it does not mean SDK lovers no no sey na hailstones or stella.. who ask you scientific explanation sef?, Google is our friend n we learn summarization 4 school. ReplyDeleteOh I remember the acid rain ish. Lol.
DeleteI was in Uni then and was scared to go to school but I had alot to do that day so I bone. The rain started unexpectedly, luckily for me I wasn't out in the rain. It fell on a friend of mine and nothing happened to him so I dunno what the big deal was about it.
Sometimes I wonder if anything could be worse than RAIN. The answer is yes---acid rain could.
DeleteSULFUR DIOXIDE causes acid rain. Sulfur dioxide is one of the gases that causes acid rain.
When the sulfur dioxide mixes with the clouds it forms dilute SULFURIC ACID. This then falls as acid rain.
In the same way, OXIDES OF NITROGEN causes acid rain by forming DILUTE NITRIC ACID in the clouds.
Acid rain causes lakes to become ACIDIC and many plants and animals dies as a result.
Acid rain kills trees and damages limestone buildings and ruins stone status. It's shocking! !!
Also, link between acid rain and human health problems have been suggested.
You can see one do not pray to see acid rain ooooo....lolz
Ice rain?
ReplyDeleteReally?
Oh well Anything is possible.

I witnessed it for d 1st time in 2003 wen I was having my NYSC in Jos & ever den I have witnessed it here severally in Abuja. If it comes big & heavy crashing on your head it can give u some serious wound or pain. Way back in Jos once d ice start dropping we ran inside to avoid it landing on your head, lol

Bajan Chick
Hail and hailstorms can be created in any continent and can occur in any country around the world, even the countries which have good weather. If this happens, they could be very dangerous when they come down in a rain shower. Though, if they aren’t large, it shouldn’t be anything more than a normal rain shower.
ReplyDeleteLagos/Bajan Chick
Not thé frist oooooo. Lol. In my village we used to rush out when it raining just to pick mkpuru mmiri. That Finger is dirty. Lol.
ReplyDeleteIts called hailstones. Not ice rain.

ReplyDeleteWhat sort of Journalism is this?

LWKMD!
SDK don't you know the English name for it?
Now your some of ur BVs will think Ice Rain is the correct thing to call it. smh
This is Normal, growing up they call it "Rainy of the year". Its usually Heavy rainy, that means farms can start planting without fear of drought.
ReplyDeleteWhen you see hail like this it also means there will be plenty rainy for crops to grow very well. there is no myth about it at all.
We use to play very well inside this rainy, i remember a particular year we gather so much hails, it use to be fun. For the Ajebos who never enter the rainy they will think its snow. lol
Naija is tropical no snow here.
It is very possible and this is not the first time. I have seen it before in the East when I was a kid. We were chased inside the house so that we will not be harmed by the ice but my uncle was able to get some of it.
