The family of a lagos pharmacist in his 30's, Paul Oluwaseun Olafare, who allegedly committed suicide in the early hours of Sunday April 12, 2015 in Lagos after drinking a pesticide have come out to accuse wife of murder.
Olafare until his death, was a brilliant pharmacist who graduated from the College of Medicine, University of Lagos in 2006. In 2013 he got the Lagos State Government Merit Award.
Blessed with two kids with his wife, Busayo, Paul was also a leader of the Celestial Church of Christ, Somolu Youth Group, he founded a gospel tract ministry, The Harvesters.
According to reports from HamiltonStyle who originally broke the news, An interview with a neighbour and close friend of the deceased revealed that Olafare allegedly drank poison in two separate gulps and lay on the bed. His wife, Busayo, was in the bathroom having her shower ahead of the usual family preparation for church. She returned to their bedroom only to find her husband writhing in painful contortions.
“Sister Busayo said she shouted at him in panic, asking him WHY HAVE YOU DONE THIS, PAUL?” the family friend said. “She said Bro. Paul only looked at her in pain and said, I AM SORRY. IT IS TOO LATE! He then drank the remaining poison – a high grade, unadulterated pesticide.”
“Bro. Paul had borrowed huge amounts of money from three different sources in order to set up his own pharmacy, but his inability to pay back had put him under severe pressure. Being also a minister of the gospel whom a lot of young people looked up to, and an award-winning pharmacist, I suspect he bottled up his financial frustration and whatever else he might have been going through” said the friend.
On Thursday last week, Olafare had allegedly sent a telephone text to his wife urging her to consider remarrying if anything ‘funny’ ever happened to him.
His wife claims he had become suicidal lately citing an instance when she had to call for help when Olafare attempted to jump down the Third Mainland Bridge into the lagoon.
The brother of the deceased has however debunked the story in a series of Facebook posts insisting his brother did not commit suicide but was murdered by his wife.
The parents of the deceased have also arrested his wife with policemen from Oworonshoki. accusing her of murder. The case has now been transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti in Ebute Metta, Lagos.
So which version do we believe??!
ReplyDeleteSince they dnt want to believe he committed suicide, they should perform an autopsy on d body to ascertain cause of death instead of just accusing the poor woman without proof
DeleteWow. So its true then. We were just talking about it yesterday and his former boss and colleagues were like its not possible. But it is. I am at a place where I feel like I can't go on anymore. If I kill myself nobody will believe it. May God have mercy on us all.
DeleteWhy arrest the lady and detain her? What happened to innocent until proven guilty? Na wah for our police force sometimes. They should do autopsy before too late. God knows crime scene is already contaminated so that's of no use now.
DeleteRIP to the dead.
Rip Seun, from what I read you seem like agreat guy. Only the wearer of the shoe knows where it pinches is what I say.
DeleteHaving said that, all the fb commenters need to return to kindergarten.
Lisa Spencer. In cases like this the spouse is always the first suspect. Especially when there's discrepancies surrounding a person's sudden death. Or... If no spouse, whoever was with the deceased would normally be questioned as a matter of protocol.
DeleteI share the deceased brother's sentiment about him gulping the remainder of the poison before her eyes. Why would she allow him do that? That alone sends a lot of negative signal.
Secondly, for a woman who's met with the shock of her hubby's suicide or death, packing her belongings wouldn't be the first thing to do. This again gives room for suspicion.
However, knowing whether the deceased was suicidal before his death is another thing they'll have to prove to absolve his wife of any wrong doing. The previous times he was said to have attempted suicide, did his family know about it? And what did their brother say was the problem?
Did he show signs of depression? If yes. Was it depression caused by financial debts or one caused by strains in his marriage? This has to be ascertained before accusing fingers are solely pointed at the wife.
Why would his wife want him dead? Motive? He was broke, so it's not a question of wanting his inheritance.
Was she cheating? Did he catch her? That could be the only possible motive here.
Otherwise the family is left with the burden of proof to explain why they think his wife murdered him. All circumstantial. And admissible court evidences has to be tendered if they must claim "murder".
Else they should take it as a huge loss and bid their brother a befitting Farewell. Sad story
suicide is never the way out now!!!
ReplyDeletehe might have been going through depression or mid life crisis.
now, what's with his family accusing his wife of killing him? how can a woman murder her husband and the father of her kids?
what's her gain? to what end?
I hate rubbish talks and people acting without logical reasoning.
namsense!
I don't know about this ish, and I'm not saying the woman killed her hubby but then bloggy, u talk as if u ain't informed a times, how can u ask how a woman can kill her hubby, are u serious or what? Oh yes a woman can kill her hubby, in fact, so many women have killed their husbands, I have seen it happen, some women a wicked and heartless, some kill their husbands for money. My dear leave it oh, umunwanyi di njo.
DeleteSo sad.....RIP.
ReplyDeleteThe sad part of the Nigerian Legal system and investigative bureau. They are so simplistic oh.
DeleteFrom what I know about Nigeria, the use of forensic science in criminal investigation is at its lowest depth. You see registrers touching exhibits(guns and cartridges) like it's banana. Dusting for fingerprints? U say? Everything is clamped together in one chamber for the long trials. Police can even set you up and claim they saw you with a gun and believe you me, you will go to prison if you have no one.
Circumstantial evidence is the only thing thing/major thing that obtains in d legal system.
Speaking devoid of sentiments, the man may be right(she may have killed him and framed it up to be suicide, it's very easy, a pharmacist's wife may be very aware of strong pesticide to finish the man off with. It happens everywhere in the world and half of them have gone scut free and feasting on the poor man's life insurance), on the other hand, it can be suicide(a man greatly in debt, emotionally downtrodden wanting to end his own life, he also may have purchased the chemicals, he knows what to take)...
They should investigate her earlier claims that he wanted to jump off a bridge, sniff around neighbours who may have heard or seen something, does she have a new lover? Does she stand 2 gain anything from his death? Did they quarrel often? Did he confide anything to anyone? Nothing can be taken for granted. (I know Nigerian police can't waste that much time, its who reports 1st or bribes well that his story will be taken)...
As for the brother, he should stop demonising the woman on social media.haba! She may be going thru a lot of pains now. Was he there? How will you say he didn't commit suicide cos he just can't? Plus what's this talk of the woman separating him from his niece and grandma. Sour grapes. How does this correlate or establish her to be a murderer. Plus anyone can panic or be so shocked to see her husband dying and won't think of snatching the cup. This man sef.Haba. He should take it easy
**BonaParte NN
What I ca deduce is he didn't have a cordial relationship with his family and obviously they blame d wife and because of this they are shouting murder.God that knows all things shld intervene
DeleteAnother part of me queries, anyone who is suicidal and is ready to comit suicide will usually do it when their loved ones are not around.
DeleteBut this woman's case, she's seemed to always be around when he wanted to die. First by the bridge, and now she was a door away when he finally did. Makes me wonder.
Why did he want to die before her eyes knowing that she would stop him? After the first attempt and failing by the bridge, if desperate to die he would have done it elsewhere in her absence so she wouldn't stop him. That's what a man desperate to die would do. Hmmm anyway....
Lord take perfect control. RIP to him
ReplyDelete*Larry was here*
I know this guy....lord have mercy
ReplyDeleteU see African tradition..... How come dey quickly assumed that the wife killed him?...
I am not in support of the wife....but I think it's rather unfair to accuse her unjustly.
She is mourning her husband for God sake.... No one should add to her misery
Let proper investigation be carried out.
@Galore
At his soul Rip
ReplyDeleteMay his soul Rip
ReplyDeleteRip to him
DeleteSo it's easier for the family to accuse the wife rather than accept he committed suicide?
ReplyDeleteWhat would be her motive for killing her husband, the father of her kids?
I didn't see where it was mentioned that he has/had issues with his wife.
Nigerian families always look for ways to point accusing fingers at a wife when she looses her husband, their son.
This is not fair!
It's bad enough the man has made her a widow, now they have also arrested her instead of allowing her to grieve in peace.
SMH.
Did they not know their brother was in a financial mess?
What did they do to help him?
Nonsense!
Honestly in African setting once a young man dies before his wife people just assume she has killed him. If he was even very wealthy that would have buttressed their point. But when there's no motive why will she do it? May his soul rest in peace.
DeleteThe brother is grieving. Let him let off steam. But he shouldn't accuse the wife if there's no proof.
My dear Genny, I'm not saying she did it, but it is not impossible.
DeleteLord Lord Lord
ReplyDeleteOnly you know the secrets and the hidden things......
So how exactly did she kill him?
ReplyDeleteTheir son owed money they didn't help him now they want ro like pin it on the wife. Useless family
why will his wife murdered him. when i read he was owing lots of debts and that caused depression.
ReplyDeleteMay his soul rest in peace and may they allow his wife and family to mourn him in peace.
No sane woman will murder her husband except being pushed to the wall
Rest in Peace young man
ReplyDeleteSucide is never an option
I believe the wife is innocent
I mean what does she stand to gain
apart from inheriting debts
The husband's family
should just bury him in peace
and leave the innocent woman alone!
heard the lady was mean when the guy was alive
DeleteShe actually looks mean in that picture
DeleteEven her eyebrows are suspicious. May God forgive me.
DeleteThats his sister not wife.. RIP fellow Celestian
DeleteLol anon you are so crayyyy @her eyebrows are suspicious.
DeleteRIP.
Lwkmd @anon 19:16. Smh
DeleteWhy are the smart ones fallen.. God rest your soul Comrade. I believe their is more to this fairy tale.
ReplyDeleteDid he leave a suicide note?
ReplyDeleteWhy would a pharmacist use local pesticide to kill himself when he could have used drug overdose? Or combine lethat drugs, to make him slip into coma, then pass away?
When a husband dies, the wife is always the first suspect. But when a wife dies, it is her time to go? NIGERIANS! The parents of the wife should fight for their daughter! Was the family not thinking of the 2 children involved? Who is taking care of them? SELF CENTERED ADULTS!
Anon u got me here "when the husband dies, d wife is d first suspect, but when d wide dies it's her time to go". African mentality is just somehow......
DeleteSucide is neva d answer to any problem .......
ReplyDeleteOh na cele? Lips sealed
ReplyDeleteShut up there, u imbecile! What is the essence of your comment? Werey
DeleteHmmm
ReplyDeleteThe deceased brother's english can kill an entire local government,*dude please next time just write in yoruba,we'd rather get translators than allow you display this gross level of "daftness".all this inlaw wahala sef,I can't deal mehn!that marriage must have been hell for the wife with all this venom you are spitting here.rip to the dead, suicide or murder only GOD knows,if the woman did the crime, then she should do the time but if not may GOD forgive you all for tarnishing her image.
ReplyDeleteUr comment cracked me up...
DeleteI said dsame thing when I read it on Laila earlier, they should investigate the wife and all those very close to him.
ReplyDeleteHmmmmmmmmmm, dis is serious oooo! a dead man can't speak, if not they will find d answers dey seek. I think d relationship BTW d deceased wife and his relatives is not smooth however I just hope and pray its not a false accusation, pple who commit suicide or die mysterious deaths complicates issue for those dey left behind. Rest in peace Mr Paul.
ReplyDeleteHmmm..May God grant him eternal rest..n may d truth be revealed. ..Amen..
ReplyDeleteSome family sef...
ReplyDeleteIs any of this neccessary?Olafare is dead and gone.
And whats this thing about accusing a wife being her husbands murderer except of course there's proof?
Rip man.
I think the family need not force thier way into the news with a tale as this one.
One thing I've realised is that, in a typical Nigerian setting, in laws who have a rich brother usually hate the wife because they think she'll turn their brother away from them, enjoy their brothers money with her family alone, or because they think she's controlling him for his money.
DeleteThat's some rich man's typical family dilemma with their daughter inlaw...although myopic.
But when a family with a poor son who is not rich have issues with his wife who's their daughter inlaw, best believe it that most times the issues are genuine....bcos their brother has nothing to offer them, they could leave him to wallow in poverty with his wife because there's no contention...no gain.
Infact some will avoid such a brother and his wife because they'll think he wants to beg for money.
But when a family is concerned about their poor son's well being, then it is because they have seen something gone really wrong in his marriage. My opinion though
Some family sef..
ReplyDeleteHow can she overpower a full grown man n pour pesticide down his throat without him fighting back?
And na Cele pple...
Pls free d woman...
Hmmm, when your inlaws hate you......... Now they want her to take the fall. God sees all.
ReplyDeleteThe brother tho.
ReplyDeleteThe guy should chill o.

Deletestella this is his elder sisters picture not his wife, the story of this his elder sister is one of another day oloriburuku somebody Paul was like the only responsible person in their family he kept distance from his family when he got married making BUSAYO Tairu the lady in the picture hate his wife so much that's the reason they locked his wife they felt she made their brother stop contacting them
ReplyDeleteFrom the English of the junior brother, u would know the family na one illiterate frustrated family.....the wife don enter one chance expect God stands for her...cos looking at the scenario, she is not loved @ all
DeleteEhn that not withstanding. There's no couple that do not have disagreements. So if that's the only issue the family have with the wife then there's no case. Cos they can't say becos she fights her hubby or doesn't like his family, hence she wanted him dead. Was he the breadwinner of their entire family? Cos that's the only reason they can get angry that his wife shut them out. Abi?
DeleteI dey follow this una case bumper to bumper. So no vex

Women always face in-laws once they are widowed.....In-laws keep blaming them 4 the deaths of their sons, but 4rm what I read here, I can deduce that the man actually committed suicide, so please, they should let that woman go......
ReplyDeleteSo because the man's family dsnt like the woman or had issues with her means she killed him? Only in Nigeria .. Once they dnt accept the wife ,anything that happens to the man is on the woman
ReplyDeleteNo mind them. Me wey don dey package my own sef. Make I see whom they go BLAME. Which one is easier: gun, poison or jumping off the freeway? All suggestions welcomed.
DeleteI believe the wife. A lot of men below the age of 50 commit suicide and suffer from mental depression but it is a subject that is never discussed. But as usual, in Nigeria we love to blame to wife. My prayer everyday is that after many many decades of marriage and in old age, IF it is God's will that my husband should leave before I do, may I not be there o!! Before his family will come and arrest me too.
ReplyDeleteChoi
ReplyDeleteI know the guys family and I don't believe he committed suicide. The family liked her when he was still leaving with his mummy at alagbole and she stays with him most times, her behavior changed when she got pregnant for their first child which they lost because of the wife her over controlling wife who took her to give birth in cele church against the will of everyone and they later lost the child, when she later gave birth to the other child who is now the first child, they didn't inform the family until a day to the naming and when they got thre the sister in the picture called the wife cos the guy wasn't in tha house at the moment that you guys gave birth and couldn't inform us until yesterday , that's how the wife and her mother started trouble and his sister gave it to them real good. It got bad that if family members call the guy that I am coming to visit next 2morrow , when they get there they will meet their door lock and will call only to inform them that they are in church. If he wants to see them he will tell them to come and meet him at his work place . If she is really innocent, Why didn't she inform his family about the first attempt to jump in the lagoon? Is it possible for you to see your husband in pain and not shout for help , instead allow him to drink the last gulp of the pesticide? These case is complicated oooo. If he needed money that bad he would have called a family meeting cos their late mummy was a distributor for major brands like guiness, 333, Nigeria breweries and his siblings are still running the business and are feeding fat on it, The ladi in the pix is his sister of the deceased (shes the first) and she just got a jeep, the 2nd born a guy has a jeep also and the 4th who is after the deceased has car all gotten from their mothers business.
ReplyDeleteSo having a jeep means u have physical cash... secondly r d grammatical errors due to rush or dats ow well u can explain urself,u n d deceased brother av something in common.
DeleteYour English though. Are you sure you're not the brother?
DeleteAnony pls I beg u, shut up!
DeleteWho exactly are you to the family?
Go back and read your comment.
It clearly shows u guys don't mind your business, too nosey , poky and controlling
If the family really loved the deceased, would he have died? Wouldn't he have gone to them to aid him financially? Would he have attempted the first suicide you stated ? (the attempt to jump into the lagoon)
I am sure it's the over bearing attitude from you guys that made them stay away from you all.
You guys had better set that woman free and allow her mourn her husband
Namsense!
All these story still doesn't prove she killed him. Like I've been repeating from the beginning of this thread, the only thing she's guilty of is allowing him complete the suicide in her presence. And I agree she should have alerted everyone when he first attempted suicide. No matter how hostile her in laws, when it started looking like the guy wanted to die she should have used that opportunity to run to them so they can all find help for him. No family will hear that from a daughter in law that they do not like, and will not answer her or set aside their grievance to help their brother. She should have famzed them with his predicament. Na where she do mistake be dat o
DeleteSisi Eko,you are on point jare.Don't mind that Anonymous rat talking about jeep n car.Razoid.We know their type.Overbearing, wicked in laws that won't allow people be.Weresious Elements.I hope the wife is from a good family background so they can give them real fire and not allow their child suffer unnecessarily In the hand of those predators
Deleteaiye ma lee gannnn
ReplyDeleteRIP to the fallen, only God knows what killed him, Him alone can tell. If his wife is innocent, God will vindicate her and embarrass the man's family.
ReplyDeleteInlaw palava,i dnt tink she is d one dt killed him..cos hw wil she pour poison in his mouth nd he wil b watchin her,d problem here is dt d lady is nt friendly wt her inlaw nd has isolated their son frm dem,dt is y dey ar accusing her rongly..nd some inlaw ar so mean even if u ar friendly wt dem dey wil stil hat u,may God help us.
ReplyDeletethis is a serious matter but the guys English meeehhnnn!!!!
ReplyDelete'her husband was writing in pain' with what pen??
'shout to the environs' are environs human beings?
'can never commit a suicide'.....
haba oga!!!nwayo ooo!!!
Hehehehehehehehe. tHe guy English na real waa! !!
DeleteIf she still has that text message he sent her, then its enuf proof
ReplyDeleteRIP but suicide is not the way out,
The time the text message was sent is of the essence. As if truly she killed him, she could av sent herself a text with his phone as allibi
DeleteAfrican Tradition
ReplyDeleteWomen Always at the receiving end
When will this stop
Nigerian family always quick to pin the wife as a murderer
ReplyDeleteInlaws and their wahala, did i not read hefe that he drank pesticide? Are they saying the lady forced it down his throat? Pls lets stop this wickedness in Africa am not saying women cant kill their hussys but this case seem highly unlikely. Rip bro Paul i can imagine the level of depression he must have been in doooh.
ReplyDeleteYorubas no dey joke with babalawo, so if it's the wife, they will know if not...
ReplyDeletesome pains are unspeakable. God deliver us from evil
ReplyDeleteThe people that do not joke with babalawos, if its true d wife don enter one chance.
ReplyDeleteR.I.P brother. Hope proper investigation is carried out. May God in his infinite goodness comfort his widow and his children.
ReplyDeleteI don't belive she killed him. Because how could she have forced him to gulp down the poisnous substance. The only way someone can poison you is in small doses through your food etc. besides everyone who has lost a loved one to suicide never belived it was possible . See how the death of comedian robin Williams shocked us all. He has everything yet hector his son life and several others . Mental illness and depression is real and hard to accept. They should release the woman , the so called family friend that says they always locked the door to his family members. So ? Did she force him to not want to see his family? How is not liking your troublesome inlaws a reason to kill your husband? Besides some men keep their families at bay if they are nasty to their wives . I pray for justice for her if she is truly innocent .
ReplyDeleteThere is always three sides to a story. Theirs, urs, and d truth. Nkan nbe! Strange things happening.
ReplyDeleteGod bless you, Yeshaazy....you've said my mind #noenergy #2vexed
ReplyDeleteIt's so unfair that the family blames the wife. Its possible the man's household enemies turned his life upside down and killed him with their juju. Now they are blaming the wife. It's such a shame that his life was wasted.I pray God fights for the mother of his kids.
ReplyDeleteShe has no reason to kill him plzzzzzzz . Terrible in laws
ReplyDeleteNigerians fooling themselves since 1900s....keep hiding sucide and more people getting frustrated...even if a man is broke arse, nasty and a wicked husband if he dies the wife will be the first suspect while a woman always dies of natural causes mschweeeeeew....it's obvious there was no cordial relationship between the wife and family...don't know what she stands to gain by killing the man so can't wrap my head round that school of thought....it's a pity proper investigations are never carried out in naija....something happens and the police will arrest all the Neigbours Including the dog...
ReplyDeletePeople go thru a lot of emotional issues that can knock them of, but cos of society they have to maintain a front that all is well....learn to seek counseling and share problems..there is always a way out of any situation
This guy had been struggling with depression since 2011, without anyone offering help. Read a posting he did in 2011, November 15 precisely. Go to

So sad !!!!
IT COULD BE TRUE HE COMMITTED SUICIDE AND IT COULD ALSO BE WHAT THE FAMILY SUSPECTED. I JUST FEEL THE POLICE NEEDS TO DO PROPER INVESTIGATIONS. IF THE WIFE IS INNOCENT, THEN THE FAMILY OWE HER AN APOLOGY, IF NOT THEN SHE SHOULD GO TO GOD FOR HELP. COS KILLING A HUMAN BEING IS GRIEVOUS NOT TO TALK OF THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE,LOVE IS A STRONG FEELING THAT TRANSCEND ABOVE ALL ODDS.
