Mercy Johnson Speaks On Boarding Train With 'Ordinary People'

''My picture and that of my daughter, Purity in a Lagos train has surfaced online and quite a number of people have asked me what I was doing in a train and in Lagos for that matter; not Paris or London.

I was around Iddo at Ebute Metta when my Range Rover developed a mechanical fault and I had to make a very important appointment in Ikeja regardless of the usual traffic congestion in Lagos. Luckily, a member of my management team was around, he suggested a train ride and we were in Ikeja
in less than 30 minutes but that is not the crux of this statement.
Like I mentioned earlier, I have had to answer questions in private and public as to why I would board a train because trains in Nigeria are considered a means of transportation for the ordinary and not-so-rich people. A friend called and said I just devalued my brand by being on the train with ordinary people.

I couldn’t help but laugh. Are we extra ordinary people because we are celebrities?
In as much as I understand the concept of branding, packaging and exclusiveness, I will never trade the experience to sit, interact and feel the pulse of so-called ordinary people.

By the way, I am part of the ordinary people. I grew up as an ordinary person among ordinary people. Why would I avoid them now? Would that be because I am now famous? Without these ordinary people, how would I have been famous in the first place?  Without the so called ordinary people, where would Nigeria's growing population of so-called well packaged celebrities be today?

For the purpose of clarification, I was not on that train due to lack of money to get a well packaged cab or to get somebody to bring another car from the house but,  my car developed an unforeseen fault and I needed a fast , reliable and convenient alternative immediately as there was urgent business to be attended to and I respect time a lot.

The train was available where I was; most importantly, I did not want to turn down the opportunity to be with the people who would ordinarily not have access to me so I grabbed the opportunity with both hands and here we are.

I want to thank my co-passengers, officials of the train for treating me with absolute respect and courtesy, I am indeed, very grateful''.

    3. I thought in an interview she said she doesn't have any friend? That aside, it is this same mentality that has landed us where we are. Who is seen as an ordinary man? We devalue our own train, even with the nice ones they seem to have brought out, but when we travel abroad, we jack our luggage and struggle to get on the train. Does it mean that those ones are not ordinary? Are they aliens? Naija my country.

    5. Myopic people everywhere. So it's more cool to jump on the train abroad but demeaning to do same in Nigeria? Looking at the picture I didn't even know that we had a functional train in lagos. It looks neat and conducive. Truth be told I feel like jumping on that myself, if only to experience it for the first time in Nigeria. It's a very good development in our transportation system.

Meanwhile, in the UK, the prime minister hops on the train to central London. Matter of fact, most MPs and other important personalities use the underground/over head trains in the UK. Even Richard Branson...so what the heck?

Same with the U.S.. these people park their very expensive automobiles to join the train. It's faster, and has even become expensive these days. So the elites have adopted this means of transportation because it is very convenient. Nigerians need orientation.

Only Nigerians will read nonsense meanings to something that should be of pride. Some of them who are criticising her, I'm sure do not have cars o..they prolly beg for rides or use cabs, forming big madame. Mercy J, don't mind them jor, what you've done will encourage others to start to use the train.

You are the wise one and they the foolish ones. Let them keep forming posh, while they wallow deep in their ignorance.

      OK bye

  12. God bless Mercy Johnson! Virtuous woman; I salute you. You will yet be lifted up by the most high.

And for those castigating her; so if one boards a train in London or US, it is no longer with "ordinary people"? Sorry for these set of deranged cerebelles (without cerebellums) "celebrities"; I shrug for you. As a matter of fact, I live in Houston, A Nigerian-American and I board trains; even in Nigeria. In Houston, so called celebrities board trains; I've met high class musicians in it. The celebrities here ride bicycles; I've seen a lot of them. Nigerians are terribly infected with incurable inferiority complex.

If Mercy Johnson like let her board okada; she remains an indisputable high brand. I will chose her movies above all other Nigerian female actors any time any day. In fact, when I go to buy movies, I look for "Mercy Johnson". Her marriage is solid; better role model; no more nudity and indecency . . . I wish Mercy will upload those "text messages" and reveal who sent them lets help her insult those "low lives"

All these just brought me lots of male friends
Both the useful and the useless
2 whole years gallivanting searching for hubby
Cos after nysc started going to offices in search of job
That one brought useless married men that tried to convince me how am too beautiful to be working
How they can take care of me
After I got a job my boring life resumed.
    I worked weekends too.
Only had Sundays which was for church and sleep
    Fast forward 15 months later
My cousin visited from the east and had some stuff from my folks for him
Went to his hotel room and he was expecting a client
We were leaving same time client decided to drop me off t d bus stop
7 months later that client became sweetest hubby
It was d most peaceful and no - stress relationship I ever had
Today that client is the father of my beautiful kids

      Sweet.

Girls/ ladies in the house una don hear?
It's the man that should find you not the other way round.
Just be decent, respectful, humble, kind, responsible and approachable at all times.
You can meet Mr right anywhere. Even in the most unlikely places or in the most unlikely circumstances.

I have a friend, the way she met her hubby is so unique.
      Lemme share;
So this my sweet friend went to visit her boyfriend in his (he was meant to have graduated oh, but had some carry over that held him back) .
Mind you, this guy cheats on her like there is no tomorrow. He hits her and never appreciates her.
We her friends have begged her to leave the low life, but for where...
It was like she was jazzed.

Anyway, she sha went to visit him that faithful day with food she prepared with own money. On getting there, she met his absence ( he told her when she called that he is home oh).
So she decided to hang around the hostel and wait for him.

As she was waiting, the hostel cleaner, an elderly woman was sweeping the hostel.
My friend went to help her.
This girl is a beauty, tall, dark, shapely and very beautiful. Black beauty with a beautiful soul too.
Imagine such a sexy girl stopping low to sweep the hostel, not even her hostel.

After she helped the woman to sweep, and even went to dispose the refuse for her, the woman was so touched she asked my friend for her number which she gave.

It happened that the woman's distant relative in the US was looking for a wife.
This old cleaner gave her relative my friend's number and one thing led to the other they got married after months of talking and dating.
She didn't want to give the man chance before oh, cos of her stupid bf, but after her hit her one time, she left him for good.

This her hubby is super rich, kind and generous. If you see his house eh, you go bow.
Immediately we graduated, he took my friend to join him over there till date.
She has 2 gorgeous sons now.

Till date, she hasn't stopped thanking God for giving her the grace to humble herself before that old cleaner.

Her hubby has changed her life, that of her parents and siblings.
Her siblings are now in the best schools abroad.
Her parents travel out of Nigeria at will now.
These were just average civil servants before.

Her useless bf is still loafing around telling everyone who cares to listen that my friend left him cos he had no money, LOL.
As at last time I heard of him, he hasn't served oh.

So ladies, if you have a good character, you attract the best without stress.

  67. Sanctimony!
    Ok, we get ur point.
Although you're rich, you can stoop low anytime
You're not like you're high and mighty colleagues.
And after the stoop, you still have the courage to address ordinary people and tell them they are ordinary but you were once ordinary too. So you can do ordinary things too and shouldn't be ridiculed." (all sarcasm intended)
I don't see where anyone said she did anything wrong. Anyone with half a wit knows she's rich and successful(by naija standards) and definitely has a car. Didn't she just come back from NY?

In essence, she's taking the usual model's route.
The humble cat, script. "They are telling me I'm beautiful, yes! I'm beautiful but won't agree I am, in public so as not to offend ugly people and I will tell them im normal like them"...whatever this means.
So now, she has established the fact that
    1) she is rich with a range rover(incase u don't know)

2)she can mingle with poorer people

3)her colleagues don't mingle with them

4)She doesn't listen to proud colleagues

    5)She is very humble.

If people are telling you stuff, why not tell them back? Why a press conference to address a train trip when the people you're talking to already know you have cars and it was done as emergency or fun"? Didn't Jayz board a train the other day? What of Rihanna in economy class on a flight? Or is she only trying to debunk the GEJ rumour indirectly? Pray tell us, Mercy.

Call me a cynic. Lmao. I'm jus having fun. I see through these people.

  71. Oh Mercy! Releasing a statement explaining yourself and using style to state u have access to cars (Don't we all? RME!) is sooo unnesarry if you ask me. You really don't owe anyone any explanation. Why the pictures hit the net in first place, I don't know because if I were on that same train with you, I wouldn't bat an eyelash. Now to those people who want to say this is news worthy and compare it to how other celebrities here in the USA enters train and it's in the tabloids. I would like to use Mariah Carey as an example. The reason it was news and tabloids worthy is because she has a reputation for everything fabulous and glamorous. She has alot of diva antics which she doesn't hide and thats a known fact about her. So it was intresting to see her get off her high horse n do something regular-like the other celebs-for ones. After which she didn't release a statement or act as though she knew the street was talking. You Mercy on the hand aint about that life. You hv never come across as fabulous neither hv you ever come across as glamorous. Seeing u in a train, on an okada or in a bus wouldn't come as a surprise to me.You trying to hard to be relatable. People who can relate with you will do without you explaining yourself, so will those who can't relate to u. The talk about brand, please honey your brand has always been the girl next door type. I see no way how a train ride would better or damage it. That was how you said you going to improve your dressing in one of staments. What was that info for? Couldn't you just note that in your heart and then take actions? Chile! You just need to calm down, take a dose of "shut the fuck up" and please share with your sister Toyin aimakhu. U lots are beginging to come off as annoying.

  73. It's this kind of attitude that has landed so many of them into high class prostitution, turning them to liars. Etcetera is the right man to deal with them. All because everyone wants to belong.

Contrary to what most people here have said, I dislike this statement. Mercy, you live in Thomas Estate, we all know you have a Range, did u have to say it? I feel you released this statement for ur vain colleagues and not the general public. Because that's the way it sounds as you have written. Your intent may have been right, but your tenses and the way you put it isn't the best. You had to stress the Range? Puhlease!!

Anyhoo, I thought it was a campaign strategy immediately I saw it. And I still believe you will use it as such.

Whenever I remember you from when I used to visit the Barracks in those days, when u used to hassle my uncle's fiancée (now wife) for transport fare to go for auditions, with your younger ones running around- I thank God for you. But please, get a publicist if you can't make a critic - free statement. Thank you.

@Anon. 18:56 - Err... why would a guy with so much money have a relative sweeping hostels? He can't open a petty trade shop for her?

That said, I hate it when people come and give this formulae for finding hubby. THERE IS NO FORMULA! Arrogant runs girls have married good men, while decent good girls have been single and are still praying.

It's just the MERCY OF GOD. Anyone who finds favour in God's eyes should be thankful and stop instructing people to use his/her formula. Just be yourself and keep having faith.
