Fact Check: 6 Popular Allegations And Claims About Jonathan

During the current 2015 election season, a number of claims have been made about the President by both opposition politicians and members of the public. These allegations include claims that the president hates Northerners as well as claims that  he did not care about the Chibok kidnappings. I’ve highlighted six of the most popular allegations and provided a fact-based response below:

“ In election season, parties make claims. Some are true. Some are not, and some are brazen distortions that can easily be checked ” - Lior Dattel

  • The President does not care about Boko Haram victims - FALSE

The president set up a  $400m Victim’s Support Fund to provide relief and shelter to victims of Boko haram’s terrorist atrocities. In addition, to prevent allegations of corruption being levelled against him, he appointed the respected General Danjuma and Fola Adeola to serve as Chair and Vice Chair of the fund.

In addition, representatives of Nigeria’s Christian and Muslim communities are members of the board. The board also has representative from the PDP and APC as well at the United Nations and the UK Department for International Development.

  • The President did not care about the Chibok kidnappings – FALSE

The officer responsible for providing security to the Chibok area was summoned by his GOC to clarify whether any girls were missing. He told the GOC that none of the girls were missing. That information was passed to the President and that led to the confusion within the Presidency about the authenticity of the missing girls story.
As soon as it was discovered that the officer lied, he and 15 other officers were Court martialled and imprisoned for dereliction of duty and lying to their superiors.

  • The President hates Northern Nigerians – FALSE

The President built universities in every state of the North that did not have a federal university. He is building 125 (103 already completed) Almajiri schools in Northern Nigeria despite the fact that primary and secondary education is the primary responsibility of State Governments. In addition, over 50% of Federal Government subsidies for farmers are concentrated in the North West and North East of Nigeria.

Also the President has appointed Northern Nigerians to important offices of the state. The Chief of Defence Staff (Alex Badeh), ADC ( Ojogbane Adegbe), National Security Adviser (Sambo Dasuki), Defence Minister (Aliyu Mohammed), Principal Private Secretary (Awwal Tukur), Foreign Affairs Minister (Aminu Wali) and Education Minister (Ibrahim Shekarau) are all from Northern Nigeria.

  • Corruption has gotten worse under the President’s administration – FALSE
Transparency International which is the internationally recognised body for measuring countries corruption perceptions gave Nigeria her highest ever ranking (136 out of 174 countries) under Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

  • The Rail Transport reforms are a sham – FALSE

GEJ’s administration rehabilitated the colonial rail network which had been rendered obsolete by past governments. As a result, ordinary Nigerians can travel by rail from Lagos to Kano for 1,900 Naira as opposed to 5,000 Naira by road.

In addition, the administration has signed a contract with the Chinese Government to build a fast rail network across the country. The Kaduna to Abuja Standard rail line which is the first phase of the project has been completed. Also, the global accounting firm KPMG has ranked the fast rail project as one of the world’s top 100 infrastructure projects.

6. The President has been in office for six years – FALSE
This is one of the easiest to disprove, yet at opposition rallies across the country and on social media, the false claim has been repeated so often that it has begun to sound like the truth.
Let’s do the maths: Jonathan became president of Nigeria on 6th May, 2010, which was a day after ex-president Umaru Musa Yar’adua died after his long battle with an illness. May 2010 to March 2015 is just 4 years and 10 months – not even up to 5 years.

D women(including mysef) came out to plea n dey termed us as d tool used by d opposition.Secondly, d insurgency in north got to ds level due to negligency- jonathan knew a northerner was gonna oppose him so he wasn't to destabilize dat area- so dt election couldn't take place in d north mking it easier for him to be reelected. I think he realized dt d plot is working against him n dat pple r truly bitter, now under 1month- weapons r being over-provided n now boko-haram is almost a tin of d past. D soldiers who were mutinied where ryt aftall-. Weapons were insufficient. I don't know if ds man thinks Nigerians r fools. With d way d economy is know n printing of money increase instead of reducing-it ll be a miracle if naira is 400 per dollar by d end of ds election. Nigeria is dying, even d international body r withdrawing der investments n pple r here talking rubbish. I thank God I hv kept enuf for mysef n my children

    1. Madam, Asari isn't an aide to Jonathan. The first lady only cried out that there is God out of frustration. If you study the video, with an unbiased mind and with the intention of seeing what's going on, she only cried because all that she asked for, did you come with two teachers, did u see the security advisory not to hold exams there which was not heeded to. All these made her frustrated like she was meeting roadblocks and not like they were lying.
How would he know a northerner would oppose him all the way from 2012. You seem to know more about the future. What if the opposition chose someone from his homebase to distablise him from home? Think about it.
And as a soldier, u shouldn't disobey your commanding officer.

Madam, please get your facts straight before making up theories in public. I personally didn't like Jonathan until i saw how facts were being twisted. And trust Nigerians, we vote based on sympathy. Same thing they used and gave him in 2011, its about to repeat itself.

    7. Jonathan hasn't done anything isn't the issue in anon 17:35's comment. Its the issues raised in the earlier comment that he or she replied to. Do u know if she's politically neutral? But u have ran in and started making unnecessary statements. Unbelievable!

      Delete
    8. It would be unfair to say that GEJ hasn't done anything. Very unfair. What many are however complaining about is that he hasn't done enough. Which is a fact whether we like it or not.

Especially as it borders on security in Nigeria. Many would have overlooked his other shortcomings,. but for the huge loss of lives in the past few years. Inadequate infrastructure etc, can take the back seat, but not when lives are involved.

OK,. if they are claiming that GEJ has revived our railways, he has provided jobs etc, and yet people are dying due to insurgency every day, how do we reconcile the loss of lives with the creation of jobs and adequate govt infrastructures? Is it not humanbeings that'll use them? If everyone dies, who will GEJ govern over?

The only reason that Jonathan is greatly opposed in governance today is because of the Boko Haram insurgency. It's a major defacto even as is being analysed from outside Nigeria. Take it or leave it.

Patience Jonathan cried that day because there were things she couldn't express regarding the chibok girls. I mean things like the underlying propaganda that she had no authority to speak about in public. Don't forget that initially, it was said that the Presidency didn't believe girls were abducted. Asari amplified their thoughts severally even though unofficially.

Patience thinks that a lot of governors are out to frustrate her husband out of office, especially the northern governors. So all these are what frustrated her to cry, not so much because of the missing girls.
      I remain non partisan. .

And if you want to talk about completing 2 terms, then the Hausas are on point wanting to get back to power. Yaradua never finished his first term, not to talk of having a second term. So, lets just say they also are fighting for the left over of their uncompleted tenure!

  20. My long response to Michael Ehioze
    ......................
@Michael Ehioze i don't think there are new information we need to know about your notes as we already know the truth about your post and our leader. We are Nigerians & no amount of cover up about the truth of current state will deter people like me from speaking out. You will not deny the fact that Nigeria is not getting better if you say it is ask your neigbour struggling to survive in benin city.
    1. Yes we heard $400 was donated, my question is where is that huge sum? Don't you think if such amount is visible a lot of things will change within affected families? Just imagine each family receiving 2M, i guess they will be a bit ok financially after their lost. That means your president has failed in that aspect because fund donated have not reached the needy, my village girl was killed in one of the kano bombing her family never received anything. How can someone who cared not hasten the redistribution of such amount?
He danced at a PDP rally after one of the bombings would someone who cared act in such an insensitive manner?

    2. Of Course he never cared about the chibok girls because he did not take drastic action as soon as they were kidnapped, even with all the protest he was still reluctant to act. Why didn't your president accept the deployment of African union peace keepers when AU members wanted to assist Nigerian government he bluntly refused now we have Niger and South African solders at the northern part of Nigeria the past 5weeks after 276days he just visited Borno state last January 16th . Can someone who cared about his citizens visit affected areas after almost a year?

    3. They north will feel hated, they have every right to feel so due to non action taken by the president. Am sure if we at south and east feel same bombing, Nigerians will feel same pain and hate toward their leader but the fact that bomb is not being thrown in Lagos,PH and Enugu everyone is dishing out i don't care attitude. You just have to live at the north to understand their pain and hatred as the president is not doing enough to help them. Building so called Almajiri schools are not enough, those schools are meant to be built anyway so is not an achievement any responsible government should be proud of. People talk about present government building 14universities,please can anyone send pictures of those universities? Are they structures started by current president or he just finished structures stated by former or renovated buildings.
By the way how much is to build an empty block of classroom ? Why do Nigerians feel their government is doing them favour instead of asking same government questions.

    4. Railway structures the current government gloat about are not something a real government should be proud of.
    a. They are locomotive Chinese made train, contact Siemens Germany to come and help you build REAL railway system not China.
    b. Train Is not fully functional at major areas in lagos thats no achievement Mr Michael.

you said the current adminstration are gloating about the railway, The past adminstration did they revive it? but this present revived it.
For you to claim you didn't see the pictures of the 14 universities that means you didn't do your research properly. This present adminstration started them and completed them

What did Obj and Atiku do? Instead they built expensive private universities for themselves.
You said the Northerns will feel hate? They should hate Buhari and their Northern Leaders, When Rtd General Ihejirika was killing the bokoharams their leaders said they were violating human right? Who said the Bokoharam should be given Amnesty? Same Grand pa Buhari? You said the So called Alamajiri should be there after all, The Noth have for 34 years did they care to.build it? The Only federal University in Buhari town during the Military as Head of State he closed it down because he "HATES EDUCATION AND HATES HIS PEOPLE" but pays his Daughters School in UK (12,000Million)

I disagree with you in terms of Corruption in GEJ adminstration, He is a Democract, He has allowed Rule of Law, the Judicary are doing their work, EFCC and ICPC unlike Obj sends EFCC to go after his "ENEMIES"

  21. 5. Everyone knows that corruption is higher now than the past years as no government officials are being prosecuted or jailed. Does it mean government officials are innocent of stealing? they are all guilty including your president.
How do you deal with corrupt system when people are not punished? People being sent to jail are pity thieves like yahoo boys and bank fraud guys, you can't claim government is working while elites/politicians who steal huge fund walk free some are even given MON and other titles.
Transparency index you sent shows it still high until the current government reduce corruption to minimal we still have a long way to go.

    6. President was Acting president from 10th February 2010 to 6th May 2010 then sworn in as president after Yar Adua's death before he was declared election winner 18th April 2011. That means he was president both in acting capacity and president capacity before 2011 general election. Would you throw away those years and act like no one ruled us? He was in charge of government, so he has ruled us for almost 6years Ehioze.

I hope i have also clarified people like you who really want to convince us by all means but our conscience will not be sold for sentiment. I will surely support any Nigeria leader who's directly impacting its citizens by creating jobs for jobless youths, security, light just normal necessities.
I was watching a red nose charity documentary last week and was with a British lady who's in charge of money laundry. Do you known what she said? That Nigeria is so rich but with wicked elites/politicians. 70% of money laundry file at her desk is about huge fund currently siphoned by our politicians and government workers. The irony is that those fund will never go back to Nigerian. It's GONE.

  25. Micheal....story for the gods. You claim the rate of corruption reduced in GEJ's administration....and you actually got this fact from a mere paper work that this same government probably submitted to this international body. Is it news to citizens that most of GEJ's achievement is on paper and not reflecting in the lives of the people? And this also goes for this level of corruption issue.

All the funds this writer claims GEJ gave out to BH victims in the north.....did it actually get to them? And that is also part of the paper work i talked about.....money given out in paper, not in reality.

Micheal, y are you even helping Mr President to cover up his tracks when he already admitted that he under estimated BH which was why he's been inactive about them all these years. Now, that election is around d corner, he suddenly woke up from slumber and he knew d right thing to do. All these years, no ammunitions were provided for the poor soldiers, and many lost their lives at d battle front.....but now, they suddenly remembered some other countries where they can get d amunitions from.

Talking about d Chibok girls, we all remember when a relative of GEJ was kidnapped a while ago, we know how all the security operatives swung into action and in less than 48hrs, the person was found but in the case of the Chibok girls, it took our president almost 2weeks to even accept that there was a kidnapp case and even after that.....his right hand guy, Asari Dokubo kept yelling no girls were missing......if his daughter, niece or sister was part of those girls, would he have handled that issue with so much levity....and you expect the Northerners to be happy with GEJ? Micheal, am sure you wont be writing this piece if your daughter or sister was one of the missing girls, so just shush it up. Nigerians know better.

Every day, i remind God of Pastor Adeboye's prayers concerning those that collected the bribe, and I pray that the prayer should be fulfilled in their lives. They have failed the body of Christ.

  30. Bring in Mandela or Mother Theresa, there’s no way $400 would be shared to those people completely without the Head of the Commission tampering with it. E.g. Have you worked with NGOs before? the funds meant for Malaria/Polio eradication, do you think they committed the said funds to it without the Directors cutting their shares? #theywillclaimHOLYpassGovtofficials.
-He never cared about the Chibok, have you stayed in the North before let say Jigawa, Sokoto pr Bauchi? When they news of Chibok girls came out, the govt of Maid was hiding it in fact Nigerians knew/heard what the Gov said and even what the Principal said, she was not consistent which made it a ‘false’ as some Northerners are happy about it because the Chibok people are Christians. Who masterminded the kidnap? That’s what you should ask, was it GEJ or Mama Peace.
    - “…North will feel hated’ hated that Boko Haram was set up by Uncle Jona or Mama Peace to slaughter them? Those in the North know this, their aim… to kill the Christians. I was in Kano when the first blasts occurred on Jan. 20, 2012 in fact I slept in my office that day.. it was terrible – d first bomb went off 5pm, 2nd - 5.30pm n 3rd -6pm, Jona planned it abi? No one should pray for such thing. Let me tell you a little story- Do you know that almost all the Hausas in Kano knew about the plot and one even told my Aunty to be careful on that Friday 20. Their plan was to bomb the markets, churches in Sabon Gari (Christian dominants) but somehow it backfired and the same people were heard saying “… they taught these people would’ve entered Christian areas and killed all of them so that we can claim their buildings.’ #fact.
Do you remember when the Soldiers were killing them, what the Arewas said, Jona should withdraw the soldiers because they were killing their children (Boko Haram), that means something is fishy about it.
Train is not a sham, yes we have been boarding it. The Yorubas/Hausas can testify to that.
Being Acting and Actual are 2 different things. You can be Acting President but can’t be called a President, abi na lie. You can be asked to act as a Manager but can’t be officially appointed as one, true or false?
LET’s put it this way, what was the Northern people’s agenda on Boko Haram? Shebi e don backfire? One’s enemies are never tired; they keep plotting and failing because Jehovah God is involved.
GEJ may not be ‘saint’ but this country should be happy that we have someone like him as president. IBB and Obj may be tough but where have their toughness taken this nation to? Who is the founder of corruption, the youths have forgotten. The politicians are corrupt but we don’t like our kids to be disciplined in schools and we even pay huge sums for them to pass WAEC n JAMB which some kids can’t defend till tomorrow and when they enter university, sorting becomes the main koko. Are we not corrupt too? How many of us can queue in a petrol station to get fuel without looking for a way to give d fuel attendant money so as to give us fuel before our turn? Or is it in the banking hall? Let’s call a SPADE a SPADE. The politicians that are corrupt, are not our ladies sleeping with them and collecting the same money from them and some will come on SOCIAL MEDIA and be ranting ‘out-of-sense’.
Had it been the North didn’t set-up this Boko Haram menance, Nigeria would’ve been singing a different song altogether but in all, I thank God for GEJ and I pray he wins. This same people shouting CHANGE, the change has started but some are blind to see the transformation agenda. I pity Osinbajooo…

Are they the ones to give themselves pass mark?
Anyways, Jonathan and co cannot force themselves down our throats.
Come March 28th by Gods grace the electorates will speak. No amount of last minute distribution of rice, yam and money can change this.
