When Employers Owe....

Congratulations, the job is yours!

Whao, intense joy, this has to be shared during ‘testimony time’ in church next Sunday.

After months of searching every job site and dropping off CV’s in various organizations, the hard work has finally paid off. No one said the road will be this tough when shortly after graduating from the UK, I decided to come back home.

Getting a masters degree abroad had been a great experience but staying
back was not an option for me. I have always believed in the saying, ‘no
 place like home’........

It wasn’t long after I came home that I started wondering if I should
have stayed back in the UK working the part time job that I would never be
caught doing in my country. Anyway the CV’s kept going out and the request
for interviews came in trickles. I remember that one interview that made me
shed tears. It was with a financial institution that is known to employ
light skinned fleshy females. Being on the skinny side I didn’t think that
would be a barrier after all, what is in my head should be more important
  than my physique.

The interview was done and to my surprise the interviewer told me ‘you are
qualified for the role but you need to eat more, be full (at the same time
gesticulating with his hands to signify widening up). Imagine my shock!

No way !
did this man sitting in front of me say I was too thin for the job?. I
wasn’t applying for a manual labour work. This was supposed to be a white
collar job for goodness sake. I thought thin was in vogue, if not why would
I be sweating it out taking long walks and jogging daily? Anyway after much
confidence boosting talks with family and friends, I was ready to continue
  with my job search.

Surely a job came shortly, an Internet service provider gave me my much
needed break and the pay I will say was ok. Not fantastic but good enough.
And yeah, right on the island so I was close to family. First week at work
and I could see that the organization needed more structure but asides this
  it was ok.

The pay came at the right time (last day of every month) until it started
coming on the first week of the next month. Well not a big deal, at least
it was coming. Human Resources will usually send a mail apologising and
blaming it on one thing or the other. Then it started coming 2 weeks late,
then 3 weeks late, then 1 whole month late.

 Hmm something was fishy.

Oh wait a minute, Human resources hadn’t sent an apology for the delay yet.
Off course rumours have started to fly, liquidity problems etc. Could this
  be true?

Surprisingly, it was business as usual, routine meetings were still being
held with executives and no one was saying anything. The greatest shock was
that punishment was still being netted out on people that ‘drop the ball’
during the course of performing their duties; 5% deduction from their
salaries, 2 weeks suspension or 1 week working suspension(25% salary
  deduction) .

Can you really blame people for underperformance?

Surely morale was low so lack of concentration was expected. People were probably thinking of how to solve problems that money should ordinarily solve.

So, it’s been almost 3 months and still no wages, no apology from anyone
and no explanation but the MD’s summer holiday was just processed. Business
class tickets for the family to the tune of almost 4 MILLION NAIRA!

This must be a joke. How on earth can anyone think of going on holiday knowing well that their staff has not been paid?

I also just found out that pension and tax are not being remitted, although my payslip states otherwise.

Hmm... my Honourable Governor must not hear this. Afterall, ‘eko o ni baje’.

I wonder if there are state labor laws and employment laws that cater for employee rights because surely owing staff wages must be illegal.

Luckily I am still single with little responsibilities but what about the
colleagues that have wives and kids, the ones paying their siblings through
school or the ones that support their aged parents? Majority are talking of
leaving but are scared they may never get paid if they leave and might also
  be seen as being disloyal.

Funny thing is that job opportunities were just posted on the company’s
website. The ‘lucky’ person will think, finally a job!  Well I don’t know
but that did it for me.

Typed my resignation letter and dropped it off. I will give them one month grace to pay my outstanding after which I might sue.

I am human and I work for money, if you need loyalty, go get a dog.

PS: I did resign, I didn't sue (no need to as the coy collapsed due to
huge debts) enrolled in french school for a few months. 3 months later, I
got a better job. 3 years later, I am still working in the same place and
my salary has never been delayed by 1 single minute!

  1. That's how they do o, especially in Abuja. They'll employ you and not pay you. Its good you just left them, you'll get a good job and they'll pay you well. That's how they do o, spend money anyhow but don't pay their employees.

That above paragraph got me laughing. My 7months salary (in 2013) is still with Purple Health International. I really wish there's anything like Labour Laws and Employment Laws that cater for employees' rights too. And I also have my 1month salary with Landmarks ICT too, since last year. The desirable not available, and yet the available are treating the employee fairly.

    4. Writer did well by going to school and all that nice stuffs...but the mistake she made was ever thinking "no place like home...." that adage does not apply when one comes from naija... That adage should be switched to "no place worse like home if you've got no clout or 'connection'..." a place where labor laws does not exist, where employers treat you like they doing you a favor rather than you adding value to their organization... Nah fuck that I'd rather take my chances abroad.. Eventually person will make headway abroad... Writer is even lucky oga didn't request for a bj in his office.. Stories I heard about bosses and CEOs makes me weep inside... Advice to sojourners abroad getting educated:- DO NOT go back home if you don't have the right connection... Tough it out abroad, it'll pay off at the end...

    5. Bvs please if you have any employer/employee issues it can be reported to the Directorate of Citizens Rights in Alausa Ministry of Justice or Office of the Public Defender Surulere also an agency under the Ministry of Justice. These agencies try to settle employer/employee disputes amicably without recourse to court however if things cannot be settled through Mediation, they take the matter to court FREE OF CHARGE. I work there so I know.

  23. Thank you for posting this.

Nigerian workers are unbelievable. How can you continue to contribute free labour to an employer who doesn't pay you...?

I shredded someone who worked for an employer for 6 months without pay and shortly afterwards, met someone who worked for an employer for one year without pay.

You cant begin to even imagine how much tirade I threw across to the guy.

He would surely have been better off carrying pure water on your shoulders and selling in traffic every 365 days in a year than slaving every day for an employer who wont pay.

I know Nigerian employers take the mick but Nigerian employees give them the leeway.

The bottomline is when you refuse to work for an employer that does not pay, the business will close. When you donate free labour to them, you are contributing to their largesse for free and helping them elude responsibility. It's that simple.

I will NEVER work for anyone who wont pay me. I'd rather set up a frying pan and fry akara in front of my house than contribute free labour to a greedy person.

I wish more Nigerians will be like me and take a stand towards this inhumane maltreatment.

Resigned where I was working joined them July (with three others), (greatest mistake) for the company Heads didn’t want me to for my impacts and relevance. From that day till now didn’t receive a dime from the You Win Sponsored company.
The cursed and useless man uselessed the money, rented and furnished a new apartment, changed wardrobe. Still saying that Glo, World Bank, GT and First Bank will sponsor his company. He will pain the whole Nigeria red. In all these he couldn’t rent an office apartment was later thrown out
Still posting us for the next three four months, (I cried my heart out and my little flesh dried up). Smart me could jump from frying pan to fire. I started combing the streets of Lagos again, got one a year ago 30k. ‘na there I still dey now’. Still looking for a greener pasture, LORD HELP ME!
The animalistic so called MD I saw one day on my way home, pretended that he didn’t recognize me, I called him he asking “where did I know you from, what is that your name ?????”. I knelt in the on the road hit the ground, faces heaven told him “Except there is no God in heaven, YOU WILL SURELY & MUST BEG IN HIS LIFE” he will search for N5 to beg for pure water and he won’t find, not man will ever come to his rescue. He was never remorseful. He regretted bringing me into the company, that he is not owning me bla, bla bla, when the company bounce back he won’t call me. Eversince, it has been terrible. For days now I have been considering suicide: My landlord expects me to pay a year rent, the last day of this month. Can even registered my son for his junior waec. Living has been from hand to mouth. I have failed as a father. No help from anywhere, and am drowning. Everything is at standstill, already overlaboured my wife.
I'm tiredly despondent, and desperately needs help. But since that help is not forthcoming, no choice but to leave this world before shame will embarrass me.

I'm going through incredible shit myself. So many people are. If I commit suicide, it will save a lot of issues for me, but I don't even have the liver.

So think of your son and face up to this challenge boldly. You will overcome. Its only for a while. It shall come to pass..

So, my colleagues started leaving one after the other with their money oh. Whatever they're paying you multiplied my 6months. That's how they saved our 6months salary for us(thinking they are wise) we took our salary without them knowing, balance our account and call them when we are already at home to inform them that we paid ourselves our salary. We were more than 10. Cunny man die cunny man bury am. Na to count car I come obodo mmiri? Oriegwu. Chi Austin

Hello ma'am do you mind doing a post on the constitutional rights of being a Nigerian. I know it's vast but we can narrow it to the most important day to day issues of life like labour, Police brutality, land tenure acts, tenancy etc.
Because I forsee most cases of us not aware of our human rights as Nigerians! Though it was taught in social studies class.
I am sure most of us don't know / remember our Constitutional rights in details.

Anonymous 17 13:18 I fell your plight, for I felt the same way before. In one of those days, under a scorchy sun, I felt like doing the same, )don't know what spirit came over me). Each day I will go and come back without anything, kids will ask "Mummy you didn't buy anything for us, even that tiny type of biscuit".
I have watched kids cry for hunger and no money to buy anything for then. They joined me loose weight, then

I was thinking toward suicidal. Trully, wishing there is a lagoon around mai area, so that I can easily jump into.
Help is coming to you asap. Just hold on, God won't give up on you, so don't give up on yourself.

  54. Typical Nigerian companies!

Forget suing! I did (at the National Industrial Court), and after over 2 years of adjournment and changing judges (they kept getting transferred), the 'kind' judge that passed judgment awarded me less than N70k in damages (way lower than the salary I was owed).
Not even mentioning the fact that if the salary is paid (very unlikely), it would be eroded by inflation.
    *sigh*

  55. sorry but I shall be real!
why on earth will anybody continue to work and not be paid? yes the employees are taking the piss...you as well are taking the piss out of your own life!
1 month, 2 , months....1 years salary being owed!? WTF!
Nigeria is a lawless country, which is why they can get away with this! But you as citizens encourage such behaviour! who in their right minds will work and not be paid? or are you going to work to catch fun, is it not for money?
Shit like that can't happen here. I remember some years back, there was a technical fault and colleagues woke up to find that they hadnt been paid on the expected day.....come see trouble! pay was only hours late! just hours, not even a full day but all members of staff ( a few hundred were now paid "compensation" and all charges that may have been incurred (i.e direct debits that were to be paid but couldn't) were also dealt with.
And this was just a case of pay being delayed by HOURS not MONTHS!

Nigeria is so education (and religion) obsessed how has the country benefited from this?
    what are the youths doing?
    why are there no protests?
why are there no laws changes?
why do you all except it?

  71. Hey folks!

Tears in my eyes as I read through the comments.  I think the tears is cos of pple's ignorance and oftentimes when we throw our hands in despair and "leave it to God" I personally know this writer. I will name and shame this company. SUBURBAN TELECOMS.

The CEO is BRUCE AYONOTE. This was a great company with  huge potentials, but due to the recklessness, haugtiness and financial shenanigans of the MD, the company went down. Liquidity issue. When you cannot manage your inflow and outflow. Imagine borrowing 5billion naira from Access Bank and Oceanic Bank. That is 10billion naira. And you lavish it on frivolities without pumping the money to acquire assets for the company.

One of the major flaws was hiring incompetent buffoons called P.U.R.E. (Prebiously Unidentified Recruitment Error) into cricritical roles ( A strategy I will explain later).

The Head of HR and other key staff members could not tell Bruce Ayonote the truth, they could not look him in the face, eyeballs to eyeballs. He believed in the old philosophy of staff are lazy and must be monitored (micro managed). This company does monthly appraisal and deducts 10% of your monthly salary. Who does that?

While salaries are yet unpaid you are hiring other unsuspecting innocent people. The strategy was to keep hiring, after you are owed for 4 - 6 months you get fed up and leave then a new person is hired. That was continous free labour.

Working for such a company like Suburban Telecoms (Suburban WestAfrica) can ruin your career. I am typing from a phone. I will come back with some more exposé

Employees should be bold enough to sue emoloyers for such sharp practices and Lawyers should also be willing to offer commission based fees prosecution job to aggrieved employees.  I have realised what discourages most emoloyees from seeking legal redress is the cost of paying a lawyer to file a suit in court.

My wife too, raids the same course and certificate with me. We have two kids one of 3yrs and the other going to 2yrs and they all feed and go to school? Madam, i have all it takes by Jesus to work as an engineer in any oil or chemical engineering firm, but no job seems to come our way. We have applied severally for jobs since 5yrs now, no job? It’s really affecting my psyche. We have been living by the grace of GOD through people? Don’t know how to pay my kids school fees dis term. The most worrying part of it is that, my last year rent is still pending, my landlord and his legal people, won’t allow us to sleep. We are confused. We need a job, to work out a living for our self, to pay our kids school fees, to pay our house rent and other social responsibilities, we pray that our good God should help us through you or through this forum in Jesus name.

Am really very interested in working with your organization, or anyone within our reach? We are very ready to send our CV to WHERE ever it needs to be sent to. We will appreciate it ma, if you will give me guide lines on how to go about it? even as i write now, my two kids are at home because of thier school fees.
