NUC Scraps Out Pass Degree In Universities

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has abolished the award of Pass Degree in Nigerian Universities with effect from the 2013/ 2014 academic session.

Prof Abdullahi Zuru, the Vice Chancellor of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, disclosed this on Wednesday at the 2014/2015 matriculation of 4,133 students of the institution.

“This has far reaching implications on the grading system of students in universities.

“This means that the minimum pass mark for courses in the universities will now be 45 per cent, that is, D-grade, instead of the previous 40 per cent which was E-grade.

“It also means that the minimum class of degree to be earned by students will now be Third Class,” he said.

According to him, no university student will henceforth graduate with a Pass Degree. culled pm news.

*The third class degree is already in extinction in some countries, good that Nigeria has joined the bandwagon.
Is there anyone reading this who has a pass degree from any Nigerian University?Must be horrible trying to get a job with a pass when third class is frowned upon.
Like i said in the THIRD CLASS DEGREE post in October 2014,I am a proud graduate of third class degree from the University of Benin due to being victimised but I didnt let it define who i am or who i have become.
If you graduated with a pass or third class, just try to top up your degree by studying further,Dont sit down and lament.

  1. Minimum pass mark should be 50% as it is in countries serious about education.

    4. I read the last post on "Third Class" grade and even though SDK mentioned how she went on further to better herself with better grades afterwards, the bandwagon comments reeked of how successful she had become with a 3rd Class without harping how hard it is to get by with such a grade in a competitive society. Emphasis should be on how much she did to better herself and not drumming on how grades don't matter.

Students should buckle up and savage their downhill grades and not take consolation on how connections and favour can make the difference. If for nothing, make the good grades to feel good amongst your peers. Isn't it a little depressing when you have to explain to family, friends and employers how you were single handedly victimised for not whetting the xesual appetites of male lecturers? For guys, the excuse is usually " I refused to block".

For people already caught in the web of Pass or Thirdy, don't just sit back and rationalise it away. Do a PGD, get on a Masters Prog. Get certifications to sharpen the edge of your first degree. We live in a certificate society. Give unto Ceasar what's his. Let your grade get you to a point where you can prove yourself. Let's encourage students to work harder while they still have the chance.

Help me check if I have written too much. Thanks!

    8. @ Collin, In the university I graduated from in Australia, exams were 50-70% of total assessment. Mostly 70%.

And pass mark was still 50%.

And you had to get at least 50% of the exam marks to pass a course.

    2. I never used to understand d Nigerian grading system and how people can get pass until I came to Nigeria for law school...the first few months were awful. I was so lost n confused ( even though they made us go thru bar part1, it really didn't really prepare us for bar part2 and the arrival of d Nigerian students)...no one really told u what was expected of us...there were different handouts everywhere, with everyone swearing that one or d other handout was d best. I bought everything, including recommended textbooks n class materials n also took notes in class!...paper everywhere, it was all too much, We ( me n my roomie, a fellow jjc like me) didn't even know where to start... d Nigerian students on d other hand seemed to just dive in from d first day..studying as if d world would end...from d first week you'll hear things like "you still dey there when I don read d whole textbook 2 times, in fact I just started reading it the 3rd time"....n me n my roomie will be looking at ourselves like Jesu!!! What have we set ourselves up for. Needless to say that was only one quarter of the problem. There was d issue of NEPA taking d light especially in the mornings when man pikin need to boil water to bath ( hot water was all i was used to for a while but i had to abandon that idea n get used to cold water sharp sharp n buy rechargeable fan for d heat)..the next was getting over life without internet ( at least internet is better in Nigeria now, but then it was hell)...then there was d issue of food, for the first 3 months, we were purging like crazy... Not that we were not used to Nigerian food, in fact we ate them always but I bet it was d combination of pepper and ajinomoto overdose that wanted to kill us..Lol...then the drama amongst foreign students n Naija students, the numerous boyfriend n girlfriend snatching n all other distractions....all in all I made it out after d first attempt (thank God!), I learnt a lot of things including speaking pidgin n Naija English, which is important for survival ( imagine speaking British English at d market...N100 tomato suddenly becomes N500..look)... And in all my years of studying ( with a 2:1 at degree and merit at masters) I have never been more grateful for the Pass I was able to escape with from d Nigerian Law sch...even my mother was rolling on the floor thanking God, I was d only one that made it out of all her friend's children ( for one, it was d 3rd attempt) and up till today, I do as well ( if not better) than people dat left d law sch with 1st and 2:1....and no one really asks law school grades...lol

      Delete
    3. @SDO lolzzz reminds me of an experience!! Well some law offices like A and O wants 1st and minimum of 2:1 from law school.

U of all people should know that passing through the University only takes God's Grace and favour. Alot of brilliant minds are being given result which are bland. They work extremely hard with almost nothing to show for it.

Next time please speak like a someone that have an ounce of empathy. I'm sorry.

    2. Don't insult people like that, most Nigerian universities victimised their students, u will see a student studying like her life depends on it and still comes out with a pass, then u see another playing around comes out with a 2:1.

    11. Genny I think your comment makes no sense. I have always been intelligent. Double promotion in primary school . I entered secondary school at 7. And finished when I was almost 14. I had all a1 in my waec. When I entered university I was really young and I must say very pretty with a shape to die for. It was just a matter of time before lecturers where looking for what was between my legs. I refused and I was failed so many times that when I graduated I have a third class. What does that say?. Because my parents were rich I asked them to send me abroad which they refused before because of how young I was.. I graduated from a university in the UK with a first class and not only that I was the best graduating student. I was given a scholarship for my masters which I graduated with a distinction and once again best graduating student. I was offered jobs but I decided to return to naija to run my parents companies... So please what does that say about the Nigerian educational system.

  13. This is a good move but...

I really don't know how many people who graduated with a third class and pass degrees that would be broken by this but I wanna tell you something. Education does not have the solemn right to define your person. Your degree does not define how high you can soar. If you think it does, please search on the number of first class graduates who applied to be drivers in Dangote's company. These are first class degree holders! Those you feel by now they should be working at all top places of the world!

I know for sure that you are taken as a second class citizens when you go for job interviews, most times you are even discouraged to apply for jobs after staring at your result. Truth is this, you must not work under someone. You must not be the employee. You have the power to be your very own boss with a little capital investment, as little as even #10,000. All you have to do is sit down, draw your life plan then pursue it pants down and success will chase you. First class degree holders will come to you to seek for job. They'll come to you seek for advice. You, a pass degree holder!

Don't let your certificate define you. Remember Dangote. Remember Steve Jobs, remember almost all the richest men in the world, almost all didn't have a college degree, all they had to do was satisfy one basic human need and their names were imprinted in the sands of time, find that need which you can satisfy, pursue it and go have your name inscribed on the sands of time.

    3. @ David Baller, you are right with your imput on this. But have you given mind to the insignificant statistics of people who are like Steve Jobs with lesser grades or no degrees who made it as opposed to those with better grades? Even if you want to be an entrepreneur, it doesn't hurt to first make good grades before veering off to business. Wale Adenuga (Super Story) till date has an enviable academic records in his dept, UNILAG and though, he is not working, his name is on Honour Roll Board. His first class didn't stop him from becoming successful either.

The import of this post is to encourage students to be better and not take solace in the Steve Jobs of this world.

I have a pass degree and have been working ever since i finished my youth service..I actually had a complex and thought i wouldn't get any job.But i heard God tell me,'Never to say Never' and now i've changed jobs like 3times..It's been amazing, but then,i'm good at what i do...It's taught me that we should never let the world put us in a box (u must marry by certain age,u must born by certain age,u must be this or that, otherwise,u won't feel fulfilled)

  38. I carry third class comot, my papa for don kiiiiiii me be that oh. Ahh. Especially when you grow up in a University community, some grades are not just acceptable. Sey wetin happen. But still some of there our grades and certificates still don't matter. If you have such grades, just try and do masters or ogre and the previous grade enters voicemail I believe. All these people that get jobs through connections, how many of them De ask them for their grades.

    1. The certificate is not the end it's actually a foundation to now build a career or business on, with other qualities not exactly taught in school but rather the the university of life!!!

  41. Really, graduating with a pass, third class is bad but not all students are to be blamed. Most students are forced to study courses which they are not interested in.Our education system does not give room 4 choices. And most times, when eventually students begin to get used to the particular course, their GP my have been seriously injured.I'm not trying to justify the third class graduates but believe me when i say our country does not help too

  42. 3rd class is not a waste, atleast not in all cases. I graduated with a 3rd class due to my own nonchalance.i was among the pioneers of post Ume, and I scored the highest for my department, goes to show that I'm not dumb but I just got carried away by Uni freedom.
Anyway, when I graduated with my 3rd class, I was so ashamed, even till date my parents don't know what I graduated with. God favored me, I have a good paying job, a flourishing business, and what's more... Most of the 1st class n 2nd class ITKs in my dept that judged me for my nonchalance r jobless with some looking up to me to hook them up with any available job.. Na #GodWin!

  45. If the Eke Chukwuemeka of Economics Department is the man you are reffering to Elsa, then you are mistaken. FACT. during the ASUU national strike that crippled universities in 2013, It was this man that risked his life and limbs to call for Lectures. He stood for us and was the FIRST lecturer to Lecture. His singular act prompted some others to go to class. NTA interviewed him. These facts are there. The former VC, Prof Adelabu noted his courage and integrity. The HOD promptly appointed him Dept's Exam Officer. During his tenure MALPRACTICES dropped. The new VC Prof Michael Adikwu reschuffled HODs, an ASUU friendly HOD was appointed whose first act was to remove the anti-ASUU lecturer. It has nothing to do with your claims, but purely an internal political maneuvering. That man is widely published internationally and a mentor to many students and ex students. I seriously doubt your claims since you have a third class.

  46. i came out with a pass 10 years ago in Agriculture from a reputatable university in Nigeria as a result of my unseriousness. I cried out my eyes as if i was going to die. I was thinking i would travel to the united state in my year 2 and my i wasnt serious with my exams and stuff, unfortunately the united states addmission didnt click.Although i work in a very good place and earn good pay. i travel in and out of the united states as like anything but i still go tru the trauma.i have done my post graduate diploma in agriculture but no way to proceed to masters. All my effort hv been abortive. Most of my colleagues dont kw my grade ,yet i feel really bad from within and i still cry. i saw the way some pple have abused pple with pass and third class and i think i deserve it and even more. Please scold me more............crying..

  47. Well I will not say mine was because of a bad lecture r or person,I studied for four years at the University of port-harcourt, Nigeria,I suffered alot and made a third class honours,it was so sad,I worked so hard, I was top ten in my class of 70,where only twenty graduated, and a chunk of the rest living with a certificate of attendance,it has been very difficult to believe I ended that way,I don't wish my enemy to graduate with dat kind of degree, believe me,a third class degree is very shameful and it's a course to you, please do not compare a pass degree to a third class honours, a pass degree is useless, I have however managed to conclude my msc in Europe where I managed with a distinction and final GPA of 3.56/4,the university system in Nigeria is terrible, university Of port-haharcourt,is not a good university,at that time it was the norm to graduate with eida a third or a 2.2 while a few escape with a 2.2, the majority of graduates are third classes, well I keep looking up,I however can't underate myself,in my university in Europe I saw a friend of mine from same home university who graduated with a third class as well and has a 4/4 at graduate school, I was a good student, I was victimized ones but again the grading scale of that university is so terrible, that has however prompted the world educational service evaluators to stop evaluating degrees from there as the university does not know how to even prepare a transcript, when my European university saw my transcript, it was however seen and addressed as a list of unconfirmed subjects, as the amount of times u take a course is listed on your transcript, bringing down what you have worked for for years,it's unlikely any university abroad would accept a transcript like that, hence the bann from world educational service evaluators, well from this point of view I would encourage the government to bann third class degrees as well, and the minimum to issue be a 2.2 of at least 3/5, there is however no need for a post graduate diploma, the university should however look for alternative ways to access students, eida through assignments that are marked and duly recorded, test, quizzes and final exams with the best grades picked to encourage students performance, a 2.2 can be achieved by everyone, it's the university that makes it hard,no need giving a grade that can't be marketable, please in the name of God let the government bann third classes and the lecturers develop a means to encourage students,a 2.1 in Babcock university is as easy as ABC,as only your core courses are used to calculate your GPA,even in uniben your final yr courses are 40 percent, meaning a 2.1 wud have been mine if I went there to study same course afterall I made a 4/5 in my finals and still made a third class, well no need to regret afterall employers don't understand this one bit,not all universities are made of the same walls!!a third class from uniport gave a distinction msc in Europe!!

  48. Again most of the lecturers are nonchalant, your life is none of their business,my advice is for you to choose the right university,my kid brother avoided university of port-harcourt but today he's a first class holder from uniben,I had no one to put me through, I had no money, no helpers, but at least I helped my kid bro tru everything, choosed the right department, program based on past experience, and today he has a first, it's easy everyone deserves a first if the lecturers themselves could take the pain and teach properly rather than take joy and running students life's, from my own point of view the teachers needs to learn the best ways to acces their students rather than that old fashioned notes dey carry about.
