Lola Shoneyin's ''How my father’s jailer can offer Nigeria a fresh start''

With presidential polls two weeks away, a Nigerian author explains why she is supporting Muhammadu Buhari – a man who brought great suffering to her family

Read what she says......

''Possibly the worst year of my life was 1984. I was 10 years old and blissfully unaware of the changing face of Nigeria’s political landscape. And a rather unyielding face it was – that of Muhammadu Buhari who had recently overthrown Shehu Shagari, a democratically elected president.

For Buhari, this was a necessary coup d’etat because Nigeria was being overrun by corrupt politicians. However, his regime would have a devastating impact on my family’s fortunes.

For the first time, at the close of the school term in Edinburgh, my father wasn’t there to pick us up. My older brother, aged 15, took charge and we made our way to Heathrow.

Touching down in Nigeria, it was my mother who met us at the airport. She didn’t smile, perhaps couldn’t; her mouth was turned down at the corners like she was being flattened by existence. Something was wrong, clearly. I waited until we were settled in the car and piped up: “Where’s Daddy?” Without turning to glance at me, my mother answered: “He’s in jail.” She always had an aversion to bullshit but even, for her, that was pretty cold. For the rest of the journey, I thought about my Daddy who returned the cash to the phone company when our account was credited with thousands of naira; Daddy who, born into abject poverty, personified what it meant to work really hard and make your own dreams come true, in a hopefully new meritocratic Nigeria.

On getting home, one of my older brothers explained that Buhari’s deputy, the uncompromising, much-feared Colonel Tunde Idiagbon, had commanded that all government contractors in Ogun state had received a notice to appear before a special committee. My dad honoured the invitation and presented all the papers to show that it was in fact the government that owed his company money. He was given two options: to pay a large amount (that no one quite understood how they arrived at) or go to jail.

On principle, my dad said he wasn’t going to pay money that he didn’t owe. He was not alone. I have a group of friends with whom I am forever bound by this shared ordeal of seeing our fathers treated like criminals. And as it was for many, this period signified the beginning of financial ruin.

My father spent six months in jail and came out a different man. For one, he started clapping at our solemn family devotion in the mornings, something we never did. He explained that that was what they did in prison. He was never a big talker but seeing him work at adjusting to normal life was painful for everyone around him.

Before his release, the two giant crushers and all the machinery and equipment that belonged to his civil engineering firm were liquidated. As children, our lives changed too. We were placed in state schools and said goodbye to our privileged lifestyles.

My dad is 87 now and he’s an active member of the local advisory board of the All Progressive party, the opposition party that has recently adopted Buhari as the presidential flag-bearer, 30 years after his first outing as a military head of state. Like many Nigerians, my father was saddened when he heard President Goodluck Jonathan claim that “stealing is not corruption”. With 24% unemployment, there are limited opportunities for young people, making them easy fodder for militants in the southernmost parts of the country and dreaded religious fundamentalists in the north. People clamour for leadership.

For the last three weeks, I have been travelling with the presidential campaign team and I have had the opportunity to listen to people and interview them. I have also had a personal need to understand this man Buhari who has run for the highest office a record three times.

At the beginning, I admit I had doubts and misgivings. It’s hard not to when you’ve been stung before. But after several conversations with him, I have come to understand what the mass hysteria is all about and why Nigerians would vote for this soft-spoken but highly principled 72-year-old.

It’s quite simple and, having worked as a schoolteacher for years, I can use a school setting in my analogy. Kids like a teacher to whom they can give the runaround but when it’s crunch time, they favour an environment where the teacher is firm, one where clear boundaries have been set. Having a president who is widely described as “clueless” may have seemed to many like an opportunity, but the goodwill that Jonathan enjoyed in 2011 has been frittered away. These days, governors in the opposition parties are starved of funds and harassed when they don’t do the bidding of a first lady who campaigns for her personal candidates. Many Nigerians believe that it is time to return to one of the few faces of anti-corruption in Nigeria’s political history. Even my wrongly-imprisoned Dad would recognise that Buhari’s ambition was to stem corruption.

Unlike many Nigerian past presidents, Major-General Buhari does not have a huge mansion. You won’t hear about him owning a bank or sitting on the board of banks. Neither does he own expansive farmland. In fact, he wrote to the minister of finance requesting that he only receive 10% of the allowance that all past presidents receive on a monthly basis. Overwhelmingly, his lack of greed and personal venality means people trust him. Within a democratic dispensation, whatever excesses Buhari’s singlemindedness at tackling corruption might have shown 30 years ago can and will be curbed.

He has surrounded himself with a brilliant, savvy team of young Nigerians and I much enjoy the passion with which he talks about his three main priorities: unemployment, insecurity and education. For some Nigerians, he might not be an ideal candidate but for many more, people want anything but Jonathan. And even better it’s someone that they feel they can believe in''.

Hmmmmmmm.....

    1. Whenever I hear pple say Jonathan is clueless, they end up being clueless on factors that qualify him as such! I am still waiting for reasons why he is o. Meanwhile,Why don't y'all just bother to compare achievements of previous administrations with his? This article has further sealed my resolve not to vote for the APC! A coalition of strange bed fellows with only greed as common ground, have successfully hoodwinked a "soft~spoken" 72 year old to be their "paper tiger" for selfish reasons.Do you think Bola,Amaechi,Atiku et al,give a damn about your future? Same bandwagon that stopped Fashola from completing the rail system? Jeez! Enough of this collective amnexia! If turning the other cheek is this lady's cuppa, cos her family got over~compensated lately, to get this charade of an endorsement on the road, then let them enjoy the benefits quietly...for now! As for us in the know,we have chosen to vote wisely! I don't know Jona from a can of paints, neither was I induced or compromised! We need to choose the lesser of two evils. Same man from Osun that pocketed Lagos and gifted you tolls, must not be allowed express license to colonise the entire Nation!

    3. Well, quite frankly I must say that as deep in thought as this writeup, it may not get the desired empathy the lady hoped to achieve. Simply because it was coined around a political candidate. And being that the timing is wrong, as in any little thing as low as coughing in Nigeria now would be termed or considered 'politically motivated".

Everyone has become irascible and overly sensitive. The reflex is astounding, even though I can relate to the crux of this writeup. But unfortunately, the ideals u preach will metamorphose into the thin air of 'political propaganda' .... ur narrative is a personal one but the conclusion will throw a lot of people off because of the obvious.

Perhaps this would make more sense next year.. or if you brought this up earlier last year u would have been applauded. But right now, to many folks in Nigeria, the most sensible comments have suddenly become the most clueless. Yes o. No thanks to the election fever

It's your prerogative, your guiding principle, and that of your father's, and I quite appreciate the angle in which you choose to see your dad's unjust incarceration by Idiagbon through the Buhari's regime.
I have absolutely nothing against Buhari. If he wins I'll support him. But we want to be impressed by more selling points, we want more than the tackling of corruption, which I think is his MAJOR strength and what he is known for. Fair enough

But Please, we expect that anyone who'll assume power should be absolute with every issue. Corruption, yes, but the welfare of the citizenry, employment and security are as important. Truth is..Jonathan has failed in this regards, and that is why any cry would do for a burial. Meaning anyone else would be supported for as long as they can alleviate us from the peculiarity we are faced with in the country.

Enjoyable and an insightful write up nonetheless. But like I said, the politicking imbibed into it has diluted the potency of the message and the messenger.

February 14 should do and come jare. Ok bye

    4. Lola am sure you were paid to utter this rubbish!! I took my time to read this your memo and I couldn't get one point of what you are talking. How did Gen. Buhari curb corruption? The same Buhari that is making this country hell is now a saint ehn? I laughed in arab bcos whether you want it or not, Pres. Jona will win!!! God's hand is upon him and Nigeria and Nigeria will not succumb to your tantrums and pranks...see your mouth like "I enjoyed the passion with which he talks about his three priorities: Unemployment, insecurity, and education. Insecurity pawo! Buhari is Bokoharam leader! Education akuko! Let him show us his SSCE ceritifticate first! Unemployment obulo so! How many of his relative has he influenced positively not to talk about the youth of this country?
Buhari cannot give what he don't have! He should go and rest biko!

    5. Wide eyed...in as much as u have made valid and cogent points, I believe you still don't get the point behind WHY people will vote for Buhari. Most people like me are not voting for his personality, though his promise to fight corruption is a strong motivating force, but we are TIRED of this present non performing government. I am an entrepreneur in Nigeria and it is hard.
Everything is just that bit much too hard...and to imagine mind boggling sums enter the ground never to be heard of again, Stella Oduahs,Diezanis, and so many more. GEJ seems to celebrate corruption. He says he doesn't but his actions or inaction speak otherwise. GEJ hasn't worked for us..its a democracy we want to try another hand and long live democracy If that regime doesn't work, we vote them out. That is the essence of democracy. We will try till we get someone who works.

    6. Quote: You won’t hear about him owning a bank or sitting on the board of banks. Neither does he own expansive farmland." The question is , what does general buhari know to make him seat as a bank board director?? The man is a novice. He doesnt even have verifiable school certificate. He told Nigerians on channels tv that he would stabilise the oil price! And i ask, how does a Nigerian president stabilise a global oil price??? Oil price globally is controlled by OPEC , how does the clueless and incoherent buhari regulate it ?? Buhari since he left office many years ago, hasn't written any book even one, and no book has been written in his name or his his honour. Does this not show you that the man buhari is a stark illiterate and a novice? I pity you young woman and the young generation shouting for change and didn't see the change in fashola but saw it in 72 yrs old "coupist" that overthrew a democratically elected govt. So now he wants to benefit from democracy which he scuttled abi?? Young woman please tell your father to go and pay the money he stole/inflated as a contract and stop giving us this nonsense cock and bulls story of your father being wrongfully imprisoned. You should have said he stole Nigeria ' s money to send you to school abroad. Buhari does not have money yet his children are schooling abroad and he borrowed 1 million from his bank manager to buy party nomination form ! You people should keep fooling yourselves, nonsense.

So somebody in his right state of mind is going to go to the polls to cast a vote for the PDP? What's wrong with people? 2. Miss Shoneyin has erred with this article and placed Buhari's position almost irreparable in the sight of intellectual and discerning minds...

You stated to us that it was Idiagbon that falsely imprisoned your father, how convinient especially now that Idiagbon cannot defend himself.

Fallacious and cacophonous tales full of needless platitudes...

In that case, it's Namadi Sambo that is causing all this depravity happening here. This article was written to be consumed solely by semi-literates and not people of knowledgeable ilk.

Assuming it was Idiagbon that 'falsely' imprisoned ur father, then where was Buhari when all this was happening and how do we know he won't be a stooge to Tinubu n co when he comes in?(that is on this your premise oh)

3)You will have us believe that your father choose a life behind bars and losing privileges over quietly repaying the money? Is he St Francis of Assisi?
These are tales told to you as a kid so you do not hate or judge your father and he remains that hero to you. The sad thing is, you choose to hang on to that ludicrous fable to adulthood and now trying to peddle the tales to us? No, thanks.

      4) Your assertion that Goodluck's wife somehow controls revenue allocated to state Governors and that it is given or witheld at her behest in a federal democracy with competent courts is equal to illiteracy. You just believe that a president sits down with the keys to the country's money in a vault in aso rock and uses it as he likes. My dear, they are channels revenue pass, stealing is not so straightforward as you think and it is not the prerogative of the president 2 directly allocate to states, they are channels 2 dis and it's even a matter bound and controlled by statute. Can bring about serious law suits up to the supreme Court if a state is denied revenue. It's a matter that goes to the root. Stop repeating beer parlour tales.

      5) you attempted to give us reasons why Buhari should have our votes over 14 other candidates and failed. You then wrote 'we want anything but GEJ'. Why not tell us great things about Buhari(on his own merit), afterall, they are not the only 2 candidates? Why should it be him?

This anything but GEJ mentality is based on d premise that 'things cannot get worse than they already are now', to that, I say a resounding NO! There's still so much worse that can happen. Which we can avoid.

Obviously, your father was in the party before Buhari, will he leave the party cos Buhari was given mandate? All he can do is dance 2 the tune of whoever is given the go ahead so you and your generation can bring the family back to its glory days. The same party criticised Buhari bitterly in the previous elections, suddenly all the traits they saw has vanished.

Madam, come back 2 us with cogent and compelling reasons why we should vote him, not this 'he imprisoned my father, now I'm suffering from Stockholm syndrome' tales.thanks

Three weeks ago, pastor Sam talked about this and he was never against or for any political candidate (no trying to campaign in the Church, I really like that). But one thing that he talked about and I so much agree with him on is," Nigeria need vision".If we as citizens of a country come together to have and make a united decision on what and what will make our country move forward, then our problems will be solved. The problem at hand is not who will govern us but what will this people bring to the table? We have a lot of things wrong in Nigeria system; from security, bad infrastructure, poor educational system, corruption, to mention but few to RELIGION, our question should be, if I vote for this person, will He/she be able to deliver and bring about the change and make my vision for my country come through?
We should not think about now but think about a better future for generations to come, facture will might not be part of but our linage will forever be grateful for whatever decision we take now.
When we can answer all these questions then we can decide who to vote for.
Let me quickly chip in this, "by their fruits they say we will know them.Lets bring to the centre square these illustrious sons of the soil (Buhari and Jonathan) and out of the box, let's put Fashola...what is their history?what can they do?what have they done?can they still deliver if given the chance? Will they be the change we so much desire? Let's give it a thought and not cry foul after the elections, we can do it. after that then we can now use the biggest tool PRAYER!
Before, I wrap up, Pls I no no o that's why I am asking, are Buhari and Jonathan the only candidates or another way to relegate the others, give this a thought too *I drop my pen*.
God bless us and Nigeria as a whole. We want a better Nigeria but to get there we need vision because NO VISION NO MISSION accomplished!

    2. @Jasmine, You are a fool. Would he/she go steal to raise capital to start up a business? He/she has the right to blame Jonathan cos they have stolen all funds meant projects that would create employment. All we hear is billions of dollars missing plus excess crude account and foreign reserve being reduced below 20billion dollars from 67billion dollars left by Obasanjo and Yar adua. This thieving govt have even gone ahead to borrow money and put Nigeria in debts. Enough is enough. This is time to stop all these nonsense and vote in a new govt. We want a new Nigeria and it has to start from the top.

    3. Jasmine don't mind her. Who even knows if she graduated with a third class or a pass and she is here making noise. Dont worry Jonathan go soon come to your house to spoon feed you. Buhari can't even appear on a debate to tell us what he intends to do for us. Why is he running away from debate from if truly he knows what to do to better the country? Buhari is not the change.

Yes,GMB is old but he's tested and trusted..maybe a bit tougher but we need someone who is not greedy or selfish and who is highly disciplined and principled.
I do not have PVC bcos I don't believe in the electorate right now but I campaign at every opportunity. I pray for my Nation too bcos if Nigeria suffers ,We the citizens suffer too, both local and those on diaspora bcos they have loved ones here.

  42. How can he stop corruption when he's surrounded and sponsored by corrupt people Eg Tinubu.
He payed the huge amount for the form to run for presidency and he never complained about the exploitation and he wants to make us believe that he can fight for our rights?
When Buhari was invited to clear his name during the Oputa panel why didn't he show up?
Why is he not bold enough to attend the presidential debate? Why does he have to stall? If he's as innocent as he wants to make us believe shouldn't he be bold enough to take some heat or is he looking for only scripted interviews where he's given the question before hand?
The current president might be terrible but I know this, Buhari is NOT the change that Nigerians need. Libyans cried and shouted that they needed change... well, look at them now. They got the kind of change they didn't bargain for.
It's sad that other parties are not as "strong" as the APC and the PDP because nobody seems to be looking at the other candidates that may actually be better off that GEJ and Buhari.
Nigerians, there is more than meets the eyes. Vote wisely.

What were you looking @ before Buhari came on board, did anyone deny you of contesting for presidency? Nigerians put their trust in Jonathan in 2011 and had failed woefully, Buhari had been tested and trusted to fight corruption in the early 80s which is the first problem of this country. Buhari we have tested, Buhari we are voting.

1.someone who has given us the true meaning of democracy.citizens of Nigerians talk and are heard without being bullied or assassinated. the person who passed in the FOI bill which others could not do.the President whose era was devoid of political assassination.a President who has been bashed with all manners of insult and still swallows all with delight.
2 a president who has taken our agricultural system to another level.in His regime food stuffs remained the same during Christmas
3.a president who has made us to stop sleeping in filling stations because of scarcity of fuel.even during festive period we don't queue on lines again.
4.a president who has built major roads that have taken many lives and roads which other regimes could not do.Benin - ore road as an example.
5 a President who has given us railway as another means of transportations; which other past presidents could not do
6.a president who had revived many auto mobile companys and also approved the making of nigerians cars.like our own brother innossin
7.a president who has built up to 125 well equipped amajiri schools which past hausa presidents could not do. what they do is to use them for their own selfish reasons like book haram
8.a President who has built more equipped universities within a short period.

Many foolish Nigerias would want continuity of this clueless, crafty and silent-killer regime all because of sentiments. It is also true that we Nigerians deserve the kind of president and leaders we have because of the way we think. We like to suffer and smile, instead of standing by the truth, we live in falsehope that the man who claims to be our brother, who like a leech is sucking us dry will one day make life better for us. Don't be fooled. Jonathan does not intend to loose the election or win fairly... that is why his 'dogs' are threatening if he loses. Whether he wins or not... He will not have my vote. I will not vote for a man that cannot make any intelligent argument. I can make better statement and better judgement more than him. Chai Daris God OOO!
