Properties worth millions of naira were reportedly lost as fire gutted the popular Uselu Market on Ugbowo road in Egor Local Government area of Edo State yesterday.
The incident, which started around 8.30pm on monday night, left 50 shops, on osamwonyi Street, burnt to ashes.
One of the victims of the fire incident, Mr. Chidera Nwakeze, who spoke to Punch, said he lost everything he newly stocked his four shops with. These, he said included bags of rice, beans and other goods.
However, most of the people who were affected by the fire outbreak believed the fire outbreak was not an accident.
A source who also spoke concerning the incident believe that the fire was allegedly caused by some traders who were against the success of others.
“I don’t think that the fire was caused by any electrical fault because the section which got burnt has been out of electricity supply.
“Someone must have set fire on this area of the market because it is dominated by Igbo people,” she said.
The council chairman, Mr. Victor Enobakhare, while commenting of the incident, said the inferno was a case of sabotage by persons who were against the reconstruction of the market.
He however pledged N1 milloin to help alleviate the pains of the loss of the victims while also promising to inform the State government. about their plight. - punch.
I thought we have passed this era of fire.
ReplyDeletePeople need to be careful, switch off all electrical appliances not in use.

ReplyDeleteVery sad. Sometime ago, same market was demolished to erect better structures, though I never saw any meaningful thing there. Sad that people's means of livelihood can be destroyed by hoodlums, if indeed what the traders are saying is true

This is wickedness. The rate which shops are burning these days is so alarming. Edo people are synonymous with juju.
ReplyDeleteDont be stupid pls! Why do u have to generalize? Its like saying all. Ibo people are ritualists, or all yoruba people are jazz people and armed robbers! Pls respect urself!

Why will someone purposely set shops on fire.
ReplyDeleteSome people are just wicked

ReplyDeleteWhy would one set people's store on fire just bcoz he is selling more goods than you? Na wa o. What jealousy will do to some people in this life will be sumfin else...
ReplyDeleteIt's a good thing you talked bout this market. Imagine the chairman destroying half of the market 2 weeks ago.. without providing warning or notice to the traders. Saying he wants to rebuild the market. No temporary place for them to trade. Cutting off people means of surviving. This is what people get for electing touts into power.
ReplyDeleteI suspct d chairman then. This way it will be easy for them to do the so called reconstruction. But they forget that they are toying with people livelihood. God comfort the traders affected
DeleteAnd this same chairman is promising 1m, for over 20shops that burnt, I want to believe he said 10m cos will 1m buy the goods?
DeleteChai...sorry for d loss,people!

They are talking about loosing goods worth millions of Naira nd Mr chairman is talking abt alleviating their plight with 1M. Diaris God oh... Well, I thank God no life was lost.
ReplyDeleteOvbe sa kpo! It has happened o, Oya all the Edo / benin haters start with the hate/diss comments.! Mscheww later y'all be screaming white people are racists, na una be d biggest racist bcos @list white people like themselves, but una still dey discriminate amongst una same skin color!
ReplyDeleteYou must not like a tribe, it's not by force but instead of always speaking bile why not pray for God to change things for that tribe if it bothers u so much? If u don't stay in Edo, who knows,ur family, friend, neighbour or kinsman may end up there so y not pray instead of castigating them everytime?
They need to investigate properly the cause of the fire before casting aspersions and causing unnecessary beef because of what some people "believe", and I know for a fact that those 50 shops that were affected were not all ibo people's shops bcos there is no ibo line in uselu market! Only in new benin or oba market (which are bigger markets and there are still benin traders in those lines) so am sure some Edo people were affected too.
But I thought these markets have security men (or watchnight as they call it) who go round to ensure the safety of the trader's shops, so how come someone (or people) were able to set the place ablaze and no one saw anything? Osalobua
Kai I feel bad for the traders who lost their goods, I hope Edo state government compensates them because these are some families source of livelihood.. it is well..
Fire again, wicked people.every week fire outbreak hmmmmmm
ReplyDeleteVery bad
ReplyDeleteUselu market again??? I feel for the traders o
ReplyDeleteMy house isnt far from the market.
Some are still tryin to heal from the last fire outbreak, now this has happened again. It is well
