Family planning method and its side effects...what ya say docs?

PROBLEM NUMBER ONE
The Best And Convenient Family Planning Method

Hello In house doctors,
I gave birth to my third baby on the 23rd of December. i have two girls aged 3yrs and 17 months. Ever since i got married four years ago. ,its either i am breastfeeding or i am pregnant. i have never taken proper care of my self.

I keep getting pregnant once my menses resumes around  the seventh or eight month. i had been so careful yet i always find myself pregnant.  i wouldnt have minded but i am on the big side,(weighs 98kg now) and getting pregnant without losing your post pregnancy weight can be very devastating.

I went for my six weeks check up and requested for the best family planning that wouldnt make me add extra weight and i was told to go for coils.

Please in house doctors,is coils the best?. how does it work and for how long can it be in my body. does it have adverse effect. God willing. i intend getting pregnant again in the next four years (make i flex small).
Thanks for your candid advice.

    1. @madam poster, so you don't believe your doctor? Why ask here again? Anywayz, the IUCD aka coil is the best option you've got on the table atleast until inhouse doctors introduce new family planning methods.

    3. I dont know about contraceptives. My hubby comes from a large family ,so he keeps condoms handy. Again,we use withdrawal method.
The first and last time we used withdrawal was in 2009. You know why?.

We have a son to show for the withdrawal method

    4. No form of contraception makes any woman put on weight, it might however make you want to eat more and it is this extra food that makes you gain weight. I was on the copper coil after my 2nd child and my husband complained bitterly because he could feel the thread every time we mad love. My best mate got pregnant whilst on the progesterone coil because it had shifted out of place. My point is, every method has its pros and cons. You just need to find what works best for you.
I am presently on the implant and two years later I haven't gained an ounce whilst some people breakout or have mood swings.
Try the coil and if after 6 months you can always go for another.

    2. Let me perch under your comments....lol
Some common family planning methods and adverse effects...
      1. Let's start with the coil. Coil can be hormonal or copper impregnated. Commonest one around here is the copper T. Main side effect is increased menstrual bleeding and you could have some pain in your Lower abdomen after insertion for some time. May also increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy especially in those with history of pelvic inflammatory disease or previous ectopic pregnancy. It may also increase the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease in some. However, these risks are not very high...major side effect is the first one mentioned and it's contraception effect is easily reversible after removal. I still think it's one of the safest and most convenient. And did I mention that's what I'm using..:-)
      2. Implants: it's a small strip inserted into your arm and contains hormones. Main side effects of hormonals include weight gain, increased risk of breast cancer especially in people with a family history, increased menstrual pain, disorded menstrual cycle, mood swings...It may however reduce the risk of endometrial cancer.
      3. Oral contraceptive pills; You have to take this almost the same time everyday. And side effects are similar to 2 above.
      4. Injectables: also hormones given as injections 2-3 months. Side effects similar to 2 above.
That said poster...The choice still remains yours. All the best dear.

  3. Had same problem as urs. Was advised by my gyny to use coil and that's what I have on. Mine it's for a period of 8yrs and dis is just d 3rd year. It's ok and easy but ur hygiene has to be good cos u are prone to infections easily. And am not adding weight but losing weight. Good luck. Oh and was told can take it out when I want. But u have to go 4 periodic checks to make sure it's still in place, and you on your own have to check from time to time if u can feel the thread otherwise u will take in.

    2. LOL the queen, I agree with you though I know it's not the best oh.
      I'm team billings.

Personally, none of the artificial family planning method appeals to me.
I might go for the coil after I'm done with child bearing or remove my womb sef.

      Delete
    3. Coil doesn't make people add weight at all. As far as I'm concerned, it has no side effect. In fact its d best. Afta I gave birth to my son, I went for the coil immediately. I've bin using it for close to 2yrs now. No wahala, no belle. I see my period. I no add any single weight. Its just that you av to go for periodic check up and you should always check by yourself to know if its still in place. It can last up to 10yrs. Whenever you are ready to get pregnant, you should go back to the hospital for it to be removed.

      Delete
    4. The non-hormonal IUD(coil) does not make people add weight. So, specifically ask for that one.

  21. Yes coils or IUCD ( Intra Uterine Contraceptive Device) is a good barrier method of FP in that it does nt contain hormones that will make u fatter n also it can be removed at anytime u wc to, d doc or midwife will tel u wen to come for check up too, it is very safe n effective Bt u Av to be very neat n keep a good personal hygiene to avoid infection
And as for how it works, it acts by causing a mild inflammatory reaction in d endometrium wc bcoms infilterated wt leukocyte n macrophages thereby preventing conception
Ensure d insertion n removal is done by a trained person
    Good luck

    ReplyDelete
  22. Try the implants, they r just the best, for me anyway. The injections will make u fat but the implants don't and ur fertility is not tampered with as you can take in immediately u take them out. And since u are looking at a long term plan, it will serve u well as u can fix for between 3 to 5yrs. Goodluck

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Exactly! I was actually reading through to see if anyone agrees with using implants.. The only reason why women gain weight with contraception is because its incresses your appetite and not because its putting fat in your system (this should be explained to you when getting contraception). I personally dont like people putting anything inside my "tingy" so i prefer the implants under the left arm (undee the skin), this lasts for three years and you dont get pregnant but the only downside is mist women dont see their period for that amout of time (which i dont think is something to worry about cos it can happen with any contraception). So coils are good for long term use but i think implants are still the best, easy in, easy out...

  25. I personal think that coil is the best, however the side effect in my case is heavy blood flow during my menses and if it's not fully done well, you might get pregnant with it again
After I had my second baby, I put coil, but got pregnant with it and my baby brought it out with her hand when she was delivered ...lol
But after the third baby, someone told me to visit a good doctor that did her own and now I have been with itfor more than five years now
Some of my friends have had theirs for 10 yrs
If am ready to give birth again, my doctor will remove it....
I think it is the best family planning

  26. Yes that is the best.. You can carry it for years.. The only effect I know is that your period becomes really HEAVY.. . VERY HEAVY.. But asides that Nothing.. . You just go for check up at the appointed time given to you.. Then every morning before bathing ensure you dip your finger in your vagina to see if you can feel the thread attached to the coil. . If you can't feel it then something is definitely wrong... I prefer it over drugs and injections. .. My mum carried hers for over 7 years

  33. I'm not a doctor, but from my personal experience, I almost bled to death the first time I used the non-hormonal IUD (which is what you are referring to as the coil). But I tried it again the second time some months after, because in my case I can't use any hormone based contraceptives because of my history of lumps in my breast, and this time my body has accepted the IUD much better than the last time. BUT be ready for a few things which could happen e.g very heavy periods lasting several days longer than usual, spotting between periods and sharp pains during periods too. But all in all, I prefer to have the IUD in than out so that my husband and I don't have to be panicking whenever my period is late. Oh and one more thing, no more 'cowgirl' for me because it hurts, but i can happily live this way.

  34. use an implant...its safe and effective and lasts 3 to 5 years

    ReplyDelete
  35. The coil works by stopping sperm and the killing the sperm too. It stops the sperm from getting to the ovaries and by stopping the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. It is in itself a contraception. There are threads attached to the coil, which make it easy for you to check it is still in place. The copper coil works for about 10 years. You need to attend regular check-ups though to make sure that the coil is still in place.

In terms of side effects, some women experience heavier and more painful periods with the copper-based contraceptive coil. This can be a problem if you are already prone to heavy and painful periods. If that applies to you, this type of contraception might not be right for you. Other side effects are uncommon but include: Cramps, Nausea, Backache, Vaginal discharge, Inflammation of the vagina.

If you do eventually agree to go for it, please do get your doctor to check for signs of infection in the 3-4 weeks after the contraceptive coil has been inserted.

Another (rare) risk is that the coil comes out or slips out of its place which is most likely to happen during the first 3 months. If this happens which if inserted properly shouldn't, you should see your doctor as soon as possible. You can also try to check the threads that come with it to see if it is in place.

For your own safety, you should never try to put the coil back in place yourself. Always leave it to a healthcare professional to insert the contraceptive coil. I do hope this information does help a bit.

  36. By coil,I suppose u meant copper T.yes it won't make you add weight cos it doesn't alter your hormones.it just prevent sperm from fusing wirh your eggs
Try it,but you have to be careful and observant to feel whether the string attached is pulling out cos many people complain of its failure whereas, the string is out and they don't know
You have to be extra hygienic also to prevent infection
As long as it is intact,it can stay up to 10years or 12years.but you can also remove it anytime you want to start kwaffing again.

    Kisse to your kids

  37. my dear. urs was my type of story until i finally had an IUD implanted. Though i had mine done after i had my last baby in the USA and i was told it could stay up to 10 years. i had mine done over a year ago and so far so good, i ve been great except for the heavy flow. NB; if ur huby na he-goat dt sleeps with anything in skirt, my dear it is not for u o, because having an IUD in place makes u more susceptible to infections, because a string is attached to the IUD
dt hangs at d top of ur Vay jay, u can actually touch it whenever u want to check if it is still in place after each monthly Period, so any infectious contact will lead straight into d womb. Another point to note is dt, u have to go for regular check-ups. good luck dear.

  38. Coil seems to be the best option for you considering your weight, any woman that weighs above 70kg does not qualify for hormonals again.
To the side effect, there's nothing that has an advantage without the disadvantage. Some of the things you may encounter includes; heavy menstruation, cramps after insertion. If you also react to copper like necklace and earrings you do not qualify to use coil. And when you are ready to conceive, remove months before so that your body system can return to normal.
While in use, maintain proper hygiene to your private area as little negligence may cause infection.

  53. My boy was 3 months when I took in for my girl....

It wasn't funny @all but I later adapted, thanx to my loving hubby and mum...

After my daughter's birth, hubby de fear to touch me oh until I went to family planning clinic and cos of my weight, I got the usual coil(copper-t)

Side effect,---- like others have said, heavy flow....
But u will so have peace of mind...

Anyways, fast forward 6 years later, that's last year, I discovered the mirena iucd (still coil) but with local hormone ..I didn't waste time in going to change to it oh

It's been a blissful 3 months mehhhhhnnnnn, very light flow of 3 days...as in very light,.....

    I'm in contraceptive heaven.....

  54. LushGreen, withdrawal means your parner unplugging his d from your socket when he wants to offload.
Failure rate is high. My pal had her 5th baby last december and i was d one that convinced her to be using withdrawal. She has not returned my call since new year day cos i misled her.

  57. Our plan was for hubby to get a vasectomy, but we waited too late. My period is late & I hope it's from stress, I don't want to be pregnant because I have two kids under 2 and a half.

Whoever coined the term "morning sickness" should be shot, I've been nauseous all day long. I'm so miserable.......wailing!!!!!
