Family planning method and its side effects...what ya say docs?
PROBLEM NUMBER ONE
The Best And Convenient Family Planning Method
Hello In house doctors,
I gave birth to my third baby on the 23rd of December. i have two girls aged 3yrs and 17 months. Ever since i got married four years ago. ,its either i am breastfeeding or i am pregnant. i have never taken proper care of my self.
I keep getting pregnant once my menses resumes around the seventh or eight month. i had been so careful yet i always find myself pregnant. i wouldnt have minded but i am on the big side,(weighs 98kg now) and getting pregnant without losing your post pregnancy weight can be very devastating.
I went for my six weeks check up and requested for the best family planning that wouldnt make me add extra weight and i was told to go for coils.
Please in house doctors,is coils the best?. how does it work and for how long can it be in my body. does it have adverse effect. God willing. i intend getting pregnant again in the next four years (make i flex small).
Thanks for your candid advice.
Make i sidon read comments......
ReplyDeleteSame here.
DeleteMe too...
Delete@madam poster, so you don't believe your doctor? Why ask here again? Anywayz, the IUCD aka coil is the best option you've got on the table atleast until inhouse doctors introduce new family planning methods.
DeleteBtw poster u can lose weight. Visit theshapecube.com and get in touch.. Read success stories as well.
DeleteI dont know about contraceptives. My hubby comes from a large family ,so he keeps condoms handy. Again,we use withdrawal method.
DeleteThe first and last time we used withdrawal was in 2009. You know why?.
We have a son to show for the withdrawal method
No form of contraception makes any woman put on weight, it might however make you want to eat more and it is this extra food that makes you gain weight. I was on the copper coil after my 2nd child and my husband complained bitterly because he could feel the thread every time we mad love. My best mate got pregnant whilst on the progesterone coil because it had shifted out of place. My point is, every method has its pros and cons. You just need to find what works best for you.
DeleteI am presently on the implant and two years later I haven't gained an ounce whilst some people breakout or have mood swings.
Try the coil and if after 6 months you can always go for another.
Lol @ irene..na real withdrawal method.
DeleteBest family planning that works for me is to abstain from sex.
DeleteWhy have sex if you don't want to make a baby, why waste the sperm.

Wow! Some people are so fertile! When me I still dey look onto God for mine after all these years...I know this year will not pass me by though infact I've asked God to make it my birthday present (cos next week is my birthday)...so I'm expectant that this month is the month I will conceive in Jesus name. Amen
DeleteLet me perch under your comments....lol
DeleteSome common family planning methods and adverse effects...
1. Let's start with the coil. Coil can be hormonal or copper impregnated. Commonest one around here is the copper T. Main side effect is increased menstrual bleeding and you could have some pain in your Lower abdomen after insertion for some time. May also increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy especially in those with history of pelvic inflammatory disease or previous ectopic pregnancy. It may also increase the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease in some. However, these risks are not very high...major side effect is the first one mentioned and it's contraception effect is easily reversible after removal. I still think it's one of the safest and most convenient. And did I mention that's what I'm using..:-)
2. Implants: it's a small strip inserted into your arm and contains hormones. Main side effects of hormonals include weight gain, increased risk of breast cancer especially in people with a family history, increased menstrual pain, disorded menstrual cycle, mood swings...It may however reduce the risk of endometrial cancer.
3. Oral contraceptive pills; You have to take this almost the same time everyday. And side effects are similar to 2 above.
4. Injectables: also hormones given as injections 2-3 months. Side effects similar to 2 above.
That said poster...The choice still remains yours. All the best dear.
Amen dear, God will do it for you.
DeleteThe weight I gained when I inserted implants no be here. And my period was irregular too. I want to give iud a shot
DeleteHad same problem as urs. Was advised by my gyny to use coil and that's what I have on. Mine it's for a period of 8yrs and dis is just d 3rd year. It's ok and easy but ur hygiene has to be good cos u are prone to infections easily. And am not adding weight but losing weight. Good luck. Oh and was told can take it out when I want. But u have to go 4 periodic checks to make sure it's still in place, and you on your own have to check from time to time if u can feel the thread otherwise u will take in.
ReplyDeleteOnome u have said it all.
DeleteCoils is d best dou it can cause heavy bleeding during menses and longer days of menses.but then we can't have it all.
DeleteBut the catholics think it's a sin to use coils nyway.
Is the coil painful to insert@onomebonny I want to go for it but can't stand pains pls help
DeleteDoc's in the house over to u
ReplyDeleteCalculating your cycle and making your husband to use condom is the best family planning you can ever think off....that's what I have been doing and it's working perfectly well...
ReplyDeleteCoils makes people to add weight as well, poster hope you know??...
U can control weight with Coil. Before family planning u doctor will know the one that will suit you. individual difference. And if you must go on coil your Hygiene must be Excellent, No G- String. You can remove it whenever.
DeleteLOL the queen, I agree with you though I know it's not the best oh.
DeleteI'm team billings.
Personally, none of the artificial family planning method appeals to me.
I might go for the coil after I'm done with child bearing or remove my womb sef.
Coil doesn't make people add weight at all. As far as I'm concerned, it has no side effect. In fact its d best. Afta I gave birth to my son, I went for the coil immediately. I've bin using it for close to 2yrs now. No wahala, no belle. I see my period. I no add any single weight. Its just that you av to go for periodic check up and you should always check by yourself to know if its still in place. It can last up to 10yrs. Whenever you are ready to get pregnant, you should go back to the hospital for it to be removed.
DeleteThe non-hormonal IUD(coil) does not make people add weight. So, specifically ask for that one.
DeleteParaguard you meant to say. Mirena is the one with estrogen and will make her gain weight. I have used both.
DeleteI like ur advise on issues, rite, blunt and practical. I concure wid you on this issue, cancer cases are rampart here in onitsha, me na natural family plannin i de use.

Legal, God-permitted, Morally-acceptable sex!
Poster, your best choice is the IUD (Mirena) because you are already obese, anything else will make you gain weight.
ReplyDeleteAnd try losing weight too for health purposes. Goodluck.
IUD IS same thing as coil.
DeleteLisa....mirena is hormonal o and that will make her add weight. I'm sure you meant copper T..lol

DeleteAnswers o, this is my exact predicament
ReplyDeleteYou need to give yourself a break abeg. Haba 3kids in 4years of marriage! Yes to some extent, coil is better than the rest. Peoples body react to things differently. I know someone that has been using it for the past 15years and she is perfectly okay with it. All u need to do is to go for your checkup regularly.
ReplyDeleteI prefer u use intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD), cus if u wanna use hormonal like injections, it can cause cervical cancer n oda tins.... tnk you

I am totally clueless here.

Use withdrawal method

Yes coils or IUCD ( Intra Uterine Contraceptive Device) is a good barrier method of FP in that it does nt contain hormones that will make u fatter n also it can be removed at anytime u wc to, d doc or midwife will tel u wen to come for check up too, it is very safe n effective Bt u Av to be very neat n keep a good personal hygiene to avoid infection
ReplyDeleteAnd as for how it works, it acts by causing a mild inflammatory reaction in d endometrium wc bcoms infilterated wt leukocyte n macrophages thereby preventing conception
Ensure d insertion n removal is done by a trained person
Good luck
Try the implants, they r just the best, for me anyway. The injections will make u fat but the implants don't and ur fertility is not tampered with as you can take in immediately u take them out. And since u are looking at a long term plan, it will serve u well as u can fix for between 3 to 5yrs. Goodluck
ReplyDeleteExactly! I was actually reading through to see if anyone agrees with using implants.. The only reason why women gain weight with contraception is because its incresses your appetite and not because its putting fat in your system (this should be explained to you when getting contraception). I personally dont like people putting anything inside my "tingy" so i prefer the implants under the left arm (undee the skin), this lasts for three years and you dont get pregnant but the only downside is mist women dont see their period for that amout of time (which i dont think is something to worry about cos it can happen with any contraception). So coils are good for long term use but i think implants are still the best, easy in, easy out...
Delete*am out*
Missing periods were beginning to freak me out till my obgyN xplained its side effect. Easy in!
DeleteSasha,is the implant painful?
DeleteI am worried about this because my doctor has this lopsided smile anytime I talk about pain!
Same smile he gave me when I asked if contractions are painful!
@ Iphie it's not at all. It's just a lil cut on the arm. And the area is numbed with anesthesia so u won't feel anything thing during the procedure.
DeleteNope,Iphie,contraction is just like orgasms.
DeletePainless
Sweet
Fulfiling
Paradigiminious
Implants made me fat o!
DeleteI don't know anything about this one.
ReplyDeleteLet me sit and learn.
But madam is it not better u have all the kids you want now and then go for a permanent one?
I may be wrong.
But my cousin who got married in 2010 had her 3rd child last December, according to her that's her last. She planning for a permanent family planning.
Waiting for comments.very intrested in this issue, because am in a similar situation.
ReplyDeleteI personal think that coil is the best, however the side effect in my case is heavy blood flow during my menses and if it's not fully done well, you might get pregnant with it again
ReplyDeleteAfter I had my second baby, I put coil, but got pregnant with it and my baby brought it out with her hand when she was delivered ...lol
But after the third baby, someone told me to visit a good doctor that did her own and now I have been with itfor more than five years now
Some of my friends have had theirs for 10 yrs
If am ready to give birth again, my doctor will remove it....
I think it is the best family planning
Anony. You are joking right?
DeleteLmao! Can't you see am already freaked out??
Loool...iphie don't freak out oo..ALL contraceptives have their own percentage failure rate. The one with highest is of course billings and amongst the lowest is IUCD. And you know no matter how much u prevent some babies from coming...dem go still come o. And bring ur yeye IUCD back for you...lol
DeleteFor heavy bleeds..abeg switch to tampons. You just have to be extra neat n hygienic.
DeleteYes that is the best.. You can carry it for years.. The only effect I know is that your period becomes really HEAVY.. . VERY HEAVY.. But asides that Nothing.. . You just go for check up at the appointed time given to you.. Then every morning before bathing ensure you dip your finger in your vagina to see if you can feel the thread attached to the coil. . If you can't feel it then something is definitely wrong... I prefer it over drugs and injections. .. My mum carried hers for over 7 years
ReplyDeleteDip?
DeleteHaaa
I know a friend who used coils and it worked for her to my knowledge no side effects. Removed it two years ago and got pregnant. Gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Please ask your gynecologist for a medical opinion. Thanks.

ReplyDeleteLet me learn from this, not married yet but I really envy you three kids in four years....
ReplyDeleteLol
ReplyDeleteU should have asked d doctor that suggested it.
Coils ain't good for everybody.
Wat are you gettin pregnant again for??? I tot u just had your third baby in decmber?? Do u work?? Are you the only child? Is your hubby the only child?? Kilode! Three kids is okay. Get a job or start abusiness and keep urself busy. Ah ahn
ReplyDeleteHian...you no dey tire. How many children do you wanna have?
ReplyDeleteI'm not a doctor, but from my personal experience, I almost bled to death the first time I used the non-hormonal IUD (which is what you are referring to as the coil). But I tried it again the second time some months after, because in my case I can't use any hormone based contraceptives because of my history of lumps in my breast, and this time my body has accepted the IUD much better than the last time. BUT be ready for a few things which could happen e.g very heavy periods lasting several days longer than usual, spotting between periods and sharp pains during periods too. But all in all, I prefer to have the IUD in than out so that my husband and I don't have to be panicking whenever my period is late. Oh and one more thing, no more 'cowgirl' for me because it hurts, but i can happily live this way.
ReplyDeleteuse an implant...its safe and effective and lasts 3 to 5 years
ReplyDeleteThat's odeshi,very convenient
DeleteThe coil works by stopping sperm and the killing the sperm too. It stops the sperm from getting to the ovaries and by stopping the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus. It is in itself a contraception. There are threads attached to the coil, which make it easy for you to check it is still in place. The copper coil works for about 10 years. You need to attend regular check-ups though to make sure that the coil is still in place.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of side effects, some women experience heavier and more painful periods with the copper-based contraceptive coil. This can be a problem if you are already prone to heavy and painful periods. If that applies to you, this type of contraception might not be right for you. Other side effects are uncommon but include: Cramps, Nausea, Backache, Vaginal discharge, Inflammation of the vagina.
If you do eventually agree to go for it, please do get your doctor to check for signs of infection in the 3-4 weeks after the contraceptive coil has been inserted.
Another (rare) risk is that the coil comes out or slips out of its place which is most likely to happen during the first 3 months. If this happens which if inserted properly shouldn't, you should see your doctor as soon as possible. You can also try to check the threads that come with it to see if it is in place.
For your own safety, you should never try to put the coil back in place yourself. Always leave it to a healthcare professional to insert the contraceptive coil. I do hope this information does help a bit.
Oochurchiii!

Hmmmm
Iphiedearie..ole ni e o....lol. common go and see your doctor now and settle for one. Or you wan make I come put one for you?..lol. Na twins remain o if you're not careful
DeleteIphie,withdrawal is the key.
DeleteIf you entangle your legs fast enough
Or if he can unplug before discharging his crude.
Side Effects:
I no belleful why you come out
Messy sheets
Belle
Iphie seriously am as scared as u are, I have been thinking about this contraception ish! Let me continue enjoying the lactational amenorrhea for now, maybe after that I wil try the natural method
DeleteBy coil,I suppose u meant copper T.yes it won't make you add weight cos it doesn't alter your hormones.it just prevent sperm from fusing wirh your eggs
ReplyDeleteTry it,but you have to be careful and observant to feel whether the string attached is pulling out cos many people complain of its failure whereas, the string is out and they don't know
You have to be extra hygienic also to prevent infection
As long as it is intact,it can stay up to 10years or 12years.but you can also remove it anytime you want to start kwaffing again.
Kisse to your kids
my dear. urs was my type of story until i finally had an IUD implanted. Though i had mine done after i had my last baby in the USA and i was told it could stay up to 10 years. i had mine done over a year ago and so far so good, i ve been great except for the heavy flow. NB; if ur huby na he-goat dt sleeps with anything in skirt, my dear it is not for u o, because having an IUD in place makes u more susceptible to infections, because a string is attached to the IUD
ReplyDeletedt hangs at d top of ur Vay jay, u can actually touch it whenever u want to check if it is still in place after each monthly Period, so any infectious contact will lead straight into d womb. Another point to note is dt, u have to go for regular check-ups. good luck dear.
Is the process of putting it painful?
DeleteI hate pain..any form of pain!
And the thread, how does it feel during lovemaking?
The process of putting it in is not painful, plus during sex, your husband is not allowed to finger you so as not to dislodge the string
DeleteIf you've had it fixed by a competent doctor or midwife...and you guys are very hygienic...omo nothing wey u no fit do o...I dey do anything o. And some husbands say they feel it a little but my hubby never talk am before o. I dey do monkey style sef if there's anything like that. And as for the pain scared cat iphie...yep you gonna feel some discomfort and slight pain and maybe even light bleed cos an instrument called a speculum will be used in putting it in...
DeleteOmg!
DeleteDr I hate any form of discomfort too..
Oh noooooooooooo
Not fingering one?
DeleteI refuse
Chai! Iphie dearie can fear for Africa. The process of putting it isnt painful at all. You will just feel cramp-like pain after it has been inserted and then you will bleed a little. Your period will be very heavy sha. Fear not iphie dearie, copper T is the best method. Depends on what will work for you sha
DeleteCoil seems to be the best option for you considering your weight, any woman that weighs above 70kg does not qualify for hormonals again.
ReplyDeleteTo the side effect, there's nothing that has an advantage without the disadvantage. Some of the things you may encounter includes; heavy menstruation, cramps after insertion. If you also react to copper like necklace and earrings you do not qualify to use coil. And when you are ready to conceive, remove months before so that your body system can return to normal.
While in use, maintain proper hygiene to your private area as little negligence may cause infection.

Ensure proper body hygiene
Thank God I've sterilised myself.

Hello poster, I feel your pain. I was also in your shoes 3 years ago. My daughter was 5 months old when I took in for my boy, I was really pissed off at first but later adapted months after giving birth I did family planning( IUCD) that's coil. Although at first you will feel uncomfortable but after wards I'm used to it. I have had it for 2 years plus, hoping to remove it soon because I want to take in soon. For me, it's the best it last for 5 years. Just to to any neatest general hospital, it's free.
ReplyDeleteOk let me learn!

ReplyDeleteFirst of all my dear 3 kids dey ok abeg, biko, take care of urself..if u want to go for family planning,u need to see a specialist, they'll carry out several test..that way they'll know which one to give u..In my case, after the tests, the doc said its the pill that will work best for me..I went on the pill, taking one everyday at a particular time..I was on it for 2 years and 7 months..when I was ready for baby number 2,I stopped taking it,a month later,I took in..just had my baby 4 months ago and my first son is 3years plus now..I NO BORN AGAIN oooo..fullstop for me..lemme enjoy my hubby and my sweet son and cute baby girl

ReplyDeleteYou can't just use any one..you have to go for a test to know which one will be suitable for your body
DeleteWhich test o Nora? Educate me abeg...All you need is for them to let you know pros and cons of each one..You go back to read about it and pick the one best suited for you. You better don't let any private hospital take your money...
