Hello In House Docs...Thank you for all time you spend in this section,God will reward you....keep reading...

PROBLEM NUMBER ONE

Sore and painful areola during breastfeeding

Hi dear... I have a 13 months old baby whom am still breastfeeding. When he was 7months old he had thrush and it was treated but after then I noticed any time am on my period around my nipple becomes red, sore with tiny rashes, little wound, itchy and very painful.

It all goes away after my period. I have gone to see the doctor and was given a drug sometimes ago but it didn't work. I want to know if there is anyone mother in the house that had gone through this while breastfeeding and how did they handling it..
Thank you

PS...am still breast feeding my child.

    1. Madam, pls don not listen to naysayers... D riteway to breastfeed is 6months exclusive and continue breastfeeding for up to 2years while u have introduce
Use d cucumber cuz its a coolant and has some lil antiflanmmatory properties
Except ur child is hiv positive or d wound is open or has a sore in d mouth feed wit d affected breast ro reduce d engorgement and d pain..u cn also apply abit of d breastmilk on d wound but ensure u expose d breast to air..I must commend u on doing the right baby friendly..don't listen to all dz people feed ur baby breastmilk till 24months..u are doin her/him a lot of good..
See a doctore too but be wary of drugs u take b4 ur child takes it in as breastmilk..

    2. You are right about the pain going to the medulla.inshort I just finished going through a phase of that too.
@poster,when do u plan on weaning the child, some people may tel u there is no more nutrient the child is getting from it cos I was told d same too.I made up my mind that I will wean at Eyears and I am succeding but I went through bashings from relatives.hehehehe

The more you prolong the time of weaning, the more your child becomes addicted and the more it would be hard to take him from it when you are ready(TRUTH)
I am a stubborn girl and once I made up my mind, dats it o so my son would be 2yrs next month and I am just starting to wean him.my own full story na for another day

Just do as GW said and don't panic,it happens esp when he sucks for a long time on a breast that milk is not much on

    1. Gosh, a lot of people are just dangerously ignorant. It is scary!!!
Yes, you are supposed to breastfeed for 2 years(24months). It is done exclusively for 6months without water and then you can introduce complementary feeds afterwards with the breast milk as well. Don't know how else to educate you. Please google these things before you expose your ignorance here. You don't have to be a mother to know this. There is a huge public awareness on breastfeeding, can't understand why people still ask foolish questions when you can easily look up these things on the net.

  28. Stop breast feeding ur child if ur nipple is sore n wounded. Its not healthy. At 13months ur baby's mouth is already so strong that if he doesn't suck gently he will injure u coupled with the fact that the breast becomes tender n painful during menstrual period. U must b undergoing a lot of pain. My advice to u is to stop breastfeeding ur baby n u will b fine. I started feeling so much pain wenever my baby sucks when he was 7 months. In fact I cried sometimes cos the pain was extreme, I couldn't bear it any longer so I had to stop breastfeeding him cos I already did 6months exclusive of breast milk alone for him and lucky for me he moved on immediately without even demanding for it for a day. Then I got myself back.

    1. Murna, really sorry to hear. Are you married? Can you freeze your eggs? Do ivf?

Ppl there is nothing wrong with breastfeeding a 13mth old!! I did till 14mths, though my baby started solids at 5-6mths as well. Career women do so as well! Yet it was work! I would be exhausted from pumping at night! But my baby got my antibodies and was super healthy. As a doc, I dislike folks trying to force their experience on any mother, so just let her be.
Poster it's the thrush, you need to get it treated. Topical nystatin or miconazole (lotrimin, monistat) apply on it, wash before breastfeeding, make sure the baby is treated as well. No need to stop breast feeding. Make sure you are changing your nursing pads often! Don't let your nursing bra get damp! Wash and sterilize them! Should clear up in 3-5 days with treatment.

You guys need to be more educated!
There is absolutely nothing wrong with her breast feeding HER child at 13 months! not even 18 months!

And then you have some saying the child should be in school....maybe you should worry about your own child being in school.
school at just 1 yeras of age...hmmm okay.
you go and take your 3 month old child to "school" in Nigeria, that has the hightest rate of child molestation and paedophilia.

It's amazing how people just come here and vomit ignorance......there is absolutely nothing wrong in breast feeding till about 2 years....you can however start giving food to the child at 6 months cos that is when the digestive system becomes mature enough to digest solids....since you however have the problem with your breast you can weane your child and observe the symptoms better and avoid reinfection to yourself and your baby....
