An excerpt

Abuja, Nigeria: Present Day

 “Where is my food?”
I snapped out of my trance, jerked my head left. Chris was standing at the doorjamb to the kitchen, clutching his chequered pyjama bottoms. “I have been standing here for a good two minutes watching you stare at nothing.” He pointed a free hand at the tap. “See how you are wasting water in this economy? Why is my yam not cooked since 4:00 a.m.?”

What time was it now? I shook my head, shut the tap off. The sink was on the verge of spilling over; chunks of yam had wedged into the drainage,  blocking it. “Sorry.”
Straightening my back, I unplugged the drainage, and water sucked in with a loud whoosh. I picked up the yam pieces, loaded each one into the pot. Chriss eyes bored holes through my back as I plodded to the gas cooker and turned on the gas. With a hiss, fire encircled the knobs. I placed the pot on the knob and stood, back rigid. What was Chris still doing behind me?

“What are you thinking of, Destiny?” Chris asked.  “What do you always daydream about?”
“Nothing,” I lied.
“This Stanley Briggs has not left your mind, abi?”

My heart galloped. Was it that obvious?
Chris came up behind me, grabbed a fistful of my hair. “Am I wrong?”
I craned my neck to ease the clench. “Please, I am pregnant.”
“Pregnant for whom? Me or Stanley?”
His grip bit into my neck, pulled at my hair roots, the sting travelling from my brain through to my toes.
“I have not seen Stanley in years.” I struggled to keep my voice in check. “Let me go, Chris.”
He spun me around, slammed my spine into the cooker. It was a miracle the pot of yams did not clatter to the ground.
“Tell me you were not thinking of him.” Spittle flecked at his lips. “Look in my eyes!”
“I wasn't thinking of Stanley,” I said, holding back a cry. “Please, Chris.”
Please. God. My baby.

“I saved you from that bastard,” Chris said, his voice hard and bitter. “And you pay me back by thinking about him for hours on end, in my own house. Under my roof?”

He rammed a fist into my cheekbone. Spots danced in my vision. I groaned, tasting blood. He yanked my arm, dragged me out of the kitchen, and flung me to the cushion sofa. Pain coursed through my body. What had I done to deserve this?
He towered over me, veins pulsating in his neck. “Heaven will welcome you today … today.”
“Chris, no!” I cried, raising my knees against his bulk, bars of protection for my child.
Enraged, my husband drove one, two, three knuckled fists into my jaw. I took the blows with strangled cries, a part of me grateful that he'd avoided my stomach. When he finally staggered off, I crawled to a corner in our sitting room and sobbed, despair descending upon me like a smouldering cloud.
I wanted out of this marriage.
Needed out. .............

  13. So many stella inspired books, checkout this one "how she knew" on okadabooks
....We talked fashion, gossip about our favorite celebrities while consuming our drinks and meat, then our conversation veered to my favorite blogger. She's also fan.
The lady blogs from outside the shores of nigeria, yet it still feels like she's here with us, breaking news and events as they happen in the country way ahead most online news portals, her style is quite unqiue which endears people to her add her wonderful heart to her crazy and eccentric readers, it equals funs, so addicted am i that i have to comment on every post!.
"You visit this blog too?" she ask with awe.
"Are you kidding me, this is my therapy" i exclaimed.
"That makes the two of us!" as she leans closer we're practically glued together now digesting her recent updates. She just annonced that she won the award we voted for awhile back, i felt very happy like it was some personal achievement, though i was positive she'll clinch the award.
"She totally deserves it" Estelle said,
"I knew she was going to win!" i said smiling , typing my own congratulatory message wanting to be amongst the first to do so.
"OMG that is you!" Estelle shrieked as she glimpsed my blog ID. "You do realise you are like a celeb here!?"
"Do you have an ID ?" I asked her still smiling, the truth is not only do i comment, am one of the regulars like she said a celeb if there is anything like that.
"Yes but i hardly comment with it" She is still looking at me like she can't believe am the one and same person sitting there with her. "Am more comfy with the anonymous mode, my skin is not that thick enough for you guys bad mouthing!".
"How do you manage it, i can't reconcile the person i've known for this past weeks with that person on that blog?". She said, shaking her head in disbelief.
"My ID is actually my alter ego, it's everything am not" I explained to her.
"Hmmm too bad and to think they'll never know that." she said
    "It keeps the fun real"
"I never liked you, always cut me across as some arrogant spoilt brat!" She confessed.
"That was the idea anyway, but i do get friends invite alot."
"Sure you'll do, most people love to associate with the badoos!" rolling her eyes.
"You should say something nice to her you know" as i push my phone into her hand and she began typing, i slipped down the rugged floor kicking off my shoes, feeling all relaxed, it's almost three in afternoon i made a note to hang out with her till five then i'll hit the road.
Done, she handed back my phone joining me on the floor.
"Your tat, you never told me what they say, it's chinese right?" she is trailing a finger through the place where i have my tattoo as she speaks, i shivered involuntarily as i follow the movement of her hand am liking the tingling sensation her touch leaves behind. I lift my eyes to look at her and everything suddenly made sense, the puzzle is falling into place, subconsciously i think i saw this coming. Her eyes were lusty.
"Have you kissed a girl before Ada?" ....

  21. I would really like a copy. I am not a victim of domestic violence but I have a friend who is currently going through this. I and some other friends have spoken to her to get out, but she remains adamant, saying that she loves her husband. I don't know how the story ends in your book but I think that she may learn a thing or two from it. I am so scared anytime her my mum calls me cos I think about the worst. Thanks in advance

  30. I still wonder how men feel when they beat up women, even to pregnant ones? What joy do they derive in doing that? The first time I witnessed a man trying to pummel his wife was just last week. Till now I feel as if I was watching home video. I am happy for all these domestic violence diaries, cos it actually made women begin to come out of the cowered state the men had put them in. Made them know that they are not alone and there are actually units that are there to help them heal back. Good work Stella. I'm happy your hardwork has been acknowledged. Keep it up.
