•Edo revokes clinical training deal
Medical students of the Igbinedion University, Okada, Edo State are in for a tough time as the state government has terminated an agreement to train them at its specialist hospitals over a N350 million debt.
Commissioner for Information Mr. Louis Odion, at a news conference in Benin city, the state capital, yesterday said the university had not paid anything to the government since the agreement was entered into on September 1, 2006.
He said Governor Adams Oshiomhole approved the termination with immediate effect.
The MoU was entered into on September 1, 2006 under the Lucky Igbinedion administration to enable the Igbinedion University use the state-owned Central Hospital Benin and Stella Obasanjo Hospital for the practicals of its medical students. It was part of the condition demanded by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) to grant the Igbinedion University accreditation to train medical students in the clinical specialties.
Odion said: “Consistent with his avowed commitment to the principle of probity, accountability and transparency, Comrade Oshiomhole in 2013 directed the State Ministry of Health to invite the management of Igbinedion University to settle the outstanding liabilities as well as convey to the university management a notification for an upward review of the annual fee to reflect current economic realities.
“However, the university wrote back and offered to pay a ridiculous N50,000 per month for use of the facilities and highly-skilled personnel/consultants at Benin Central Hospital and Stella Obasanjo Hospital.
“Regrettably, concerted efforts made ever since by the State Government to make the management of Igbinedion University to pay the debt that had accumulated over the years and also agree to an upward review of the annual charge have proved abortive.
“In the circumstance, the government is left with no other option than terminate the MOU in public interest. The Ministry of Health has equally been directed to inform the Nigerian University Commission and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria that the Benin Central Hospital and Stella Obasanjo Hospital will no longer be made available for the use of the medical students of Igbinedion University.”
The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Eghosa Osaghae, said the university was yet to be informed about the decision.
Prof. Osaghae, who spoke in a telephone interview, said the university honoured the terms of the MOU and wondered why the state government would rush to the media instead of writing to the university.

Oh wow. The government can slash the accumulated debt to enable the school pay a reasonable sum & the school should make a realistic offer.what's a govt for, if it doesn't make things easier? I see the school making alternative plans elsewhere because that backlog sum is back-breaking!

The backlog sum is not only back-breaking. If they had paid dia debt as at when due will it be back breaking. If its the students that are oweing the sch dey won't get dia certificate until they pay. Abeg let them go and pay its not as if they can't afford it

Ghen ghen
ReplyDelete*when two elephants fight,it is the grass suffers.*
ReplyDeleteThe students would be the ones to bear the brunt of this action.
If this allegation is true then the management of igbinedion university needs to be flogged cause with the amount of money being paid as fees by the medical students I don't see why they should not be able to pay the said amount since 2006.
That's about 370,000 a month give or take a few thousands which am sure is equal to if not more than the school fees of one medical student.
They better do something fast about it for the sake of the students.
Lol @ flogged I actually imagined them being flogged
DeleteHmmmm so what's gonna happen to the poor students
ReplyDeleteewoooooo...na to dey transfer go other schools after third year?i dont understand..oghenebiko..it is tough enough as it is.

ReplyDeleteThey can apply to other TH,hopefully those ones will train them.
ReplyDeleteTo even think I once considered studying medicine in this school...
ReplyDeleteChief G.O. Igbinedion can owe for Africa so I am not surprised that he hasn't paid. I feel for the students who pay outrageous amount of money for tuition and the likes every session yet nothing to write home about. May God free us from people who just want to be draining our pockets without results Amen...
ReplyDeleteIgbinedion university has always had issues with their medical students, initially it was an agreement with UBTH(university of benin Teaching Hospital), he owed and switched to Central hospital, now same problem...Same Reason my family Friend left the University @200level Medicine, to go study somewhere else....

ReplyDeleteEdo withdraws ITV's accreditation
ReplyDeleteEdo State Government has withdrawn the
accreditation of the Correspondent and Cameraman
of the Independent Television (ITV) attached to the
Government House, for the TV station’s
unprofessional reportage of news and events aimed
at deliberately misinforming the people on the
government’s programmes and activities.
In a letter to the General Manager, Independent
Television (ITV), Benin City, owned by Chief Gabriel
Igbinedion, Special Adviser to the Governor, Prince
Kassim Afegbua said: “You will recall our earlier
discussion with you on the series of fabricated and
adversarial reportage of issues in the state which
has continued to misinform, misrepresent and
confuse the people of the State.
“As you know, these deliberate false reports which
have become your editorial policy offend the ethics
of broadcast journalism and the code of conduct
spelt out by the National Broadcasting Commission
[NBC].
“In view of the above, we are withdrawing the
accreditation of your correspondent earlier attached
to Government House with immediate effect.”
The station was also sacked from the Government
House during the short tenure of former Governor
Oserheimen Osunbor for unprofessional conduct.
Na 2day? The Igbinedions r chronic debtors na! Heard d Esama still owes coca cola millions of naira.
ReplyDeleteServes dem right abeg!
Mtcheeewwwww
The lgbinedion owned Independent Television has been engaging in propaganda to defame the governor of Edo state since Gabriel Igbinedion left the then ACN for PDP just before the governorship election of 2012 ... Recently they started fabricating lies to score cheap political points. The governor came out two weeks ago to warn the station that those who live in glass houses do not throw stones
ReplyDeleteGo and pay your debt abeg..that is why d gap between the poor and the rich is growing wider everyday.pay up!
ReplyDeleteI was a medical student here..I quickly changed to anatomy because of the problems and the increase in fees. I graduated last year. These medical students pay 850,000 as school fees..when you add other charges like their development fee, one stupid local government fee that is 40 abi 50k and the rest of them..its up to a million! For what?! That school is living on past glory...the school management is so messed up..they hardly pay lecturers salary..always owing. Medical students are just suffering there..some are even showing little signs of depression. Today accreditation..tomorrow no accrediatation. Its really sad but Edo government did the right thing. They should pay!! What do they do with the money? Look at the terrible roads in okada..lemme not even talk about the hostels!
ReplyDeleteThey pay peanuts and when it's time to pay they won't pay
DeleteIgbinedion has money now,tho i heard he has not pay some of his staff!
ReplyDeleteIgbinedion should pay up abeg...the hospital does not belong to his family..what rubbish..he is busy buying benley and rolls royce up and down..pay ur igbese..akaosa
