While Segun Oyeyiola was a student at Obagemi Awolowo University, he converted his gas-guzzling Volkswagen into a fossil-fuel free machine by installing a giant solar panel on top and a wind turbine under the hood. The idea is that it becomes “Nigeria’s future car.”
At inception, the battery took 4-5 hours to charge, which was not ideal. The biggest challenges, according to Oyeyiola, was finding the best materials to use, and the people telling him he was wasting his time.
Here is an animation of a solar/wind powered car, showing how batteries are charged via the multiple turbines.
Wow..dats cool..hard work pays
ReplyDeleteStella it's obafemi not obagemi, thank me later.
DeleteWe are getting there gradually!
DeleteThat's so cool.
DeleteThe government should invest in people like this but no, they will rather buy foreign products.
ReplyDeleteThis is cool... I Waka
DeleteWe don't value what we have in this country..those German men would buy this man very soon and invest in him wisely ...God bless your hand work bro

Great Ife!!
ReplyDeleteOk try ohh...u can do it
ReplyDeleteNa poverty dey worry am.
ReplyDeleteHe should go and buy gas for his car and drive like regular people.
Who will buy a car that has a giant tray on it in the 21st century?
Smh! I'm very sorry to say this but it's obvious that you lack the ability to think outside the box. Did you say poverty? What rock did you crawl out of?
DeleteOnce upon a time the tiny memory card you use now was bigger than 10 computers... someone made it,other people modified it and now we are enjoying it.....
DeleteOnce upon a time the airplane was just a drawing (400 years before it was actually made)
I can go on and on but my point is... that the solar panel on the car top is big now doesn't mean someone else can't modify it to be better. Whenever that is done,no1 will deny that the innovation was this guy's brain child
I'll stop by saying that there are 3 categories of innovators....1) those who do the thinking (they aren't really innovators tho)...2) Those who take the first actual step in the "doing" (exactly where this guy belongs)....3)Those who modify first steps and make it more beautiful!!!!.......SO LEARN TO APPRECIATE PEOPLE'S EFFORTS
Kai, a times u talk like a fool, a complete idiot! Who says d guy can't afford to fuel his car? And whose talking about poverty here, have u ever in ur miserable life invented anything, and ur here bad mouthing someone who has achieved for himself. U most really be a bitter and ugly fellow.
DeleteBruno , your head is empty such a pity.....
DeleteAnon 9:37 same thing I thought when I saw this, once an investment firm picks him up, this his innovation can be modified and turned into something smaller, our laptops now were once mainframe put in a big room, until someone came with an idea of table tops, now laptops, now palmtops, little chips here and there!
DeleteBianca Bruno I like it when people like you talk, you give to great minds saying their mind, I love all the replies her, I am a materials engineer and I can tell you that's a good one by Segun Oyeyiola. Just to make it easy for you without much words.....it is stated that it wasn't easy for the young nigerian getting materials. If this were to be a country where things work Segun will be picked up and investors will make his dream come true by supporting him, let me just tell you that the panel can be inbeded on the roof of the car with lovely materials that will have great finishing and you wouldn't notice any fault........what is needed is MONEY which we have in abundance in nigeria but it's in wrong hands. May God help us. Thanks to Stella for giving us such stories. I will surely look up this guy and I believe God will do something soon. Good bless Stella DimokoKorkus Blog. God bless Nigeria.
Deleteoh wow, that's quite something. heartwarming to see we have innovative people & inventors even with all the crippling factors holding back technological advancement in his country.

Tell that man to go to India and show them his prototype because here in Nigeria. He's wasting both his time and brain energy.

ReplyDeleteSo na so I waste my mb to watch toy way they move? Isorai'
ReplyDeleteThe panel is too big abeg, not impressed.
ReplyDeleteGood Product
ReplyDeleteAbeg Innoson group should get this guy and that Anon saying he should go to India....smh. Is that how they ran from their country to your own? Instead of us to stand with one voice and put pressure on ourselves that N̶̲̅☹ matter what we would make this country work, we advice them to run to other countries that won't let me them come back.
ReplyDeleteWe, Nigerians, have got to change our selfish mentality of me first before anyone else. Its LOVE that can better this country and spur her to heights greater than all the countries put together.

ReplyDeleteWow,that's amazing
ReplyDeleteGood one from him
ReplyDelete"Obafemi" please.
@Galore
Kudos to him....I pray he gets noticed and picked up by people who are willing to invest in his dreams and innovations.
ReplyDeleteGreat Ife!!
ReplyDeleteWow, what innovation, the thing we have in abundance in Nigeria is sunshe. It needs a lt of refinement obviously. Methinks they can find a way of making the actual roof out of solar panels. I really hope they follow through with this invention so that we can reduce our dependence on fossil fuels
ReplyDeleteKudos bro....soon you'll get into Toyota company
