Theresa May Wants To 'Send Home' Foreign Graduates‏

Foreign students could be forced to leave the UK after their courses finish under tough new rules being considered by the Home Secretary, reports say.

Theresa May wants the Conservative party's next manifesto include a pledge to make non-European Union graduates return home and apply for a work visa from abroad if they want to continue living in Britain, according to The Sunday Times.

At the moment most students switch easily to a work visa from within the UK.
Under the proposal, universities and colleges would be fined and stripped of the right to sponsor foreign students if they fail to ensure that students left the UK.
A source close to the Home Secretary told the newspaper that Mrs May has warned the Prime Minister that failure to act on foreign students will make it impossible for him to hit his target of cutting net migration.

"Making sure immigrants leave Britain at the end of their visa is as important a part of running a fair and efficient immigration system as controlling who comes here in the first place," the source said.
"Theresa is pressing for the next Conservative manifesto to contain a policy that will make sure that anybody coming here on a student visa will have to leave the country in order to apply for a new visa of any kind.

"She wants to make the colleges and universities that sponsor foreign students responsible for ensuring their departure.
"And she wants to be able to fine colleges and universities with low departure rates and deprive the worst of them of their right to sponsor foreign students."
But senior Liberal Democrats warned Mrs May's plan could deprive the UK of highly-skilled graduates.
A senior Lib Dem source said it made "zero economic sense" and "such a blunt instrument would not get our support".
An aide to Deputy PM and Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg added: "We think it is a very bad idea to get rid of people who have spent years training to be physicists and computer programmers.
"We've invested a lot in these people and to turf them out for the sake of some figures doesn't make any sense."

Mrs May is also likely to face resistance from Chancellor George Osborne, who encouraged David Cameron to ditch quotas for immigrants in his recent speech on EU migration because it would hurt the economy.
Mr Cameron has insisted that only the Tories can offer "competence" on dealing with immigration.
Writing in the Daily Express on Saturday, Mr Cameron said his Government had addressed some of the problems inherited from a Labour administration that "let immigration get out of control".
"I came into office with a single-minded determination to turn all this around - and real progress has been made," he said.
"We put a cap on those coming here to work from outside the European Union - and we have seen the numbers fall significantly, close to levels last seen in the 1990s.
"Major work has been done to clamp down on the bogus 'colleges' that were really just a front for people to come here, with more than 800 of them shut down so far."
Official figures from the Office for National Statistics show that 121,000 non-EU students entered the UK in the year to June, but only 51,000 left, meaning 70,000 stayed behind in just one year, The Sunday Times says.
The business department has calculated that the number of foreign students coming to the UK will rise by more than 6% a year up to 2020.

  15. No be today students don dey run comot ... Took off after my postgrad.

They have no clue about what they need to do that's why they are victimizing international students, the people from the EU claiming benefits are the problem without contributing a penny to govt coffers..... It's so bad that Polish and Lithuanians are claiming benefits for kids in Poland and Lithuania ooo and same for other EU migrants ... Just yesterday EU court of justice granted Turkish migrants same benefits and the UK cannot appeal ... Rubbish

  16. It's good in my own opinion. At least all those ajebutter Nigerians who run there to further their studies will have a chance to come home and try their hands on something in their country. Theresa May should push it.....

  19. These home office people should get their acts together joor.
They keep changing their rules, almost as if they're not quite sure which direction to go.
You go to the UK as a commonwealth citizen and they still expect you to write their English exam to prove your proficiency, but someone from Poland or Romania who doesn't speak a word of English goes straight in and is given same rights as a British citizen, just because they're white!

They should just state the real reason for these rash policies. Mschewweew!

    1. Your right. Uk immigration policies are so racist. It is clear for all to see. It is targeted at non white countries. Those Eastern Europeans English is very bad but yet they come to uk freely with no problems and yet a so called commonwealth citizen who English was a first language faces so many obstacles.

Like the home students go to school or how much do they pay despite being given students loan. Most constitute a nuisance on the streets yet she is got eyes on the International students pumping money into their economy all in a bid to study abroad. She dey crayyyyy.. Shege bansa

  31. Another wrong solution ma'am, you and David Cameron won election with immigration crack down. It has failed. If you like chase all Africans and Asians away from the UK, your immigration problem is EU. Failed manifesto, failed govt.

Your immigration nuisance is from EU and not from Africa and Asia put together!

But that's none of my business!

  39. Stella,

3 very important points to note

1- ".....At the moment most students switch easily to a work visa from within the UK....."

This is not necessarily true as this changed about 2 years ago. It is no longer easy to switch to a work visa after graduation.

2- ".....Under the proposal, universities and colleges would be fined and stripped of the right to sponsor foreign students if they fail to ensure that students left the UK......"

This can never ever work. Are Universities and Colleges the Immigration Services? And attempting to blackmail students by withholding certificates or threatening to withdraw such if the students are not able to prove that they have left the country would fall flat on it's face. Even the academic community would rise up in arms against such nonsense.

3- The already financially deprived university system in the UK CANNOT afford to alienate foreign students as it is their money as well as brains that keep the system going. A lot of disciplines wouldn't have been on offer if the system did not have students coming in from India, China, Nigeria etc.
Universities in Canada, Australia and the United States especially are fighting very seriously for the attention and they are rapidly getting it

I know I said 3 but make I add one jara....

4- Anybody who wants to come and study in the United Kingdom should feel free to do so BUT be careful with the Universities that you choose. All the ones jumping up and down for your attention in Nigeria are usually third rate and even to get a job with their certificates can be difficult for those who can work in the UK.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I blame people that go there to school. How many of their children can afford the fees? If international students stop going there na dem go suffer.
