Gospel act Obiora Obiwon carted away four awards at the 4th Annual Nigerian Gospel Music Awards (NGMA). The event which held Sunday 14 December 2014 in Lagos, Nigeria yielded four (4) wins out of five (5) nominations for Obiwon, whose rise in the gospel music scene has been gradual and steady ever since announcing a switch in July 2008.
The NGMA winnings were in the following categories and for the following works: Best Collaboration Song for “Hail My King” featuring Frank Edwards, Eben and Kenny K’ore; Best Soul/R&B Song for “Good To Me”; Worship Song of the Year for “Pour Your Love” and Album of the Year for his latest LP “Gold Water”. The entire songs and album were produced by longtime collaborator Phat E who also won the NGMA Producer of the Year
While picking up his fourth plaque for the night, Obiwon rolled literally on the floor in appreciation to God for a surprising night and a good 2014. It may be recalled that in the same year Obiwon was blessed with a son, got another award, several nominations and continued to exert an appreciable level of impact on the Nigerian gospel music audience.
‘‘Gold Water’’ is Obiora Obiwon’s third full length album and his second in the Christian/Gospel genre. The title is inspired by a combination of ‘Water’ as a symbol of cleansing and restoration and ‘Gold’ for divine glory.
"Gold Water" was nominated thrice at the 2014 Crystal Awards for excellence in the gospel music industry where it also took the Best Collaboration trophy for "Hail My King". The album was produced by Phat E who worked with Obiwon on ‘The Rebirth’ album and the smash single 'Obi Mu O'. Their undeniable synergy is once more felt on the album which continues to sustain attention.
ABOUT OBIWON
Obiora Obiwon announced a full-time gospel music ministry in 2008 and followed through in 2009 with his sophomore and first gospel album "The Rebirth". Since then he has consistently impacted the events and gospel music scene with his new sound and “The Rebirth Band”.
The album became noted for the praise song "F.a.t.h.e.r" but mostly for producing the hit wedding anthem "Obi Mu O". His 2006 debut "Overture" previously produced the classic ballad "Onyinye", garnering vocal performance awards at the Nigerian Music Awards and at the acclaimed HipHop World Awards both in 2007.
Subsequently the R'n’B-singer-turned-urban-gospel-minister received his first gospel music honours at the 2013 National Gospel Awards, was awarded at the 2014 Crystal Awards and received four awards at the 2014 Nigerian Gospel Music Awards. The impact and influence of his faith-based transition continues to grow steadily all over the Christian community and music industry.
