Nigeria Forced To Revise Budget As Oil Prices Remain Low

Nigeria has been forced to revise its budget following the dramatic fall in the price of oil.
Its finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, says its economy will now grow at 5.5% this year, rather than 6.4%.

The new budget is based on an oil price of $65 a barrel, rather than the
previous assumption of $77.40, although the revised figure is still higher than the recent level of about $60.
Nigeria's government receives more than 75% of its revenues from oil exports.
The country is trying to reduce its dependence on oil.
Prices have steadily dropped in recent months and are now about half their previous levels.
Falling demand on the back of slackening economic growth and an increase in alternative energy supplies, such as shale gas, have led to a mismatch between supply and demand.
'Fast'
Dr Okonjo-Iweala urged Nigerians "to begin thinking of the country [as] a non-oil country".
Nigeria has taken some key steps already in response to the falling oil price, which is at its lowest level since July 2009.
It has devalued the naira and has applied higher taxes on luxury items.
Dr Okonjo-Iweala said: "This budget is based on a few key indicators, $65 a barrel benchmark and we are going to stick to it for now, in spite of the decline in prices, because we feel the average price next year will be around $65 to $70.
"The production level is 2.27 million barrels per day. We've revised the growth rate based on the new parameters for the country, down from 6.35% to 5.5% next year. But that is still one of the fastest growth rates we're experiencing in the world today."
Nigeria's currency, the naira, lost 3.5% on the day, hitting a record low of 187.10 to the dollar. - BBC

    1. For Pete's sake, let us stop this dependency on oil and start focusing on previous sources of revenue like Agriculture. What happened to exporting groundnut and sugarcane from the north, oilpalm from the west, rubber from the south south and other regions that grow it, Cocoa from my dear Cross River State? . I hear we also used to export cotton and that Malaysia got oilpalm seedlings from Nigeria and look where they are today. I tire for my country jare!

Activated the MTN 4.5GB that goes for 2K5 today on my BB and I immediately checked my data balance and got the shock of my life when I saw 2.9gb instead of 4.5gb.
Omo I vex call customer care and blasted them. They were claiming it was network error. It's been restored now anyway.
If I hadn't checked my data balance immediately, na so them for rob me like that.

Oil this, oil that! They should start by reducing the billions they steal to thousands maybe then they won't have to revise the budget. The problem is not the budget, the problem is these thieves are stealing too much. Next thing now, they will increase fuel price.
Nigerians should start thinking of Nigeria as a non-oil producing country, really? Okonjo are you okay? What has the government done to make this possible? Don't you idiots know Nigerians are limited because of lack of basic amenities? What can one do without electricity, good health care, good roads, security, etc? It's too early to rant.

    1. @jayem....bi,, bikonu... Hope you understand that 1 dollar to 250 naira na serious inflation o.....haba.....even.average man for naija go turn beggar by world standard o....
My take is.....they should start by cutting off their allowances that would remit more money into circulation then even.if the budget is revised the backdrop won't be serious....then we should invest into order sectors....like textile, agriculture and the so called oil sector which should be overhauled.. Then an only then would importing rates be reduced and gradually we would start exporting as a nation not as dangote solely to get more revenue...
Mind all these would provide jobs for youths too.

My only problem is Nigerians love jehovah sharp sharp money....nine wants to make a honest living at all....they don't mind being jobless as long as there is a steady supply of hand me downs..

  40. If not that Nigerian leaders are rogues, shouldn't they have forecasted this?,which sane country depends solely on oil?...they should have started facing agriculture which has good yield based on the fact that Nigeria enjoys a good climate.... Now they are devaluing the naira which is already useless so as to,maintain their foolish lifestyle.... They are increasing taxes and yet despite the devalued naira they didn't cut down on their salary...... How can the pension of a president be 23 million naira?....how much is minimum wage?
Anyway for me o....even if I port out of this country farming is the way....my parents despite education are correct farmers....I also learnt how to farm...before becoming a doctor....so I'm looking forward to have my own farm lands o...from livestock rearing to food crops....it will get to a time that every one will know a craft and handiwork will stop generating good revenue in this country but everyone must eat and that food I will provide...
Not my 2 cents.. This is my 1billion dollar plan...

Since 2012,this oil thingy has been showing itself small small but instead of them to face it at that time they didn't and now allowing us buy stuffs too expensive
Agriculture should have been the next line since we have good climate. We should be exporting very well to countries which don't enjoy good climate or have rich soil like we do
Go to the north, all the lands are empty
      That shouldn't be the case

However, the systematic...should I say endemic corruption still needs to be nipped in the bud because we don't now want the same exact thing to happen to Agriculture where you now have majority of the policies are gear towards enriching a minority few and impoverishing the majority. Creating barriers to entry where a handful or one person can create a monopoly on this or that commodity. It is already happening with things like cement, rice, sugar where others are being priced out of the market. Not going to mention any names but we know who were are talking about.
