Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Releases Press Statement After APC Announces Candidate For VP Position

Bola Tinubu Says '' I SERVE THE NATION''

Statement Released by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu regarding his
withdrawal from consideration for the APC Vice- Presidential Position.

I am a Nigerian who loves his country and am hopeful about what it can
become. I have seen and conducted myself as a patriot long before I
thought of myself as a politician. I shall always walk this line and
no other.

After all the political calculations are made and the dust of
competition has settled, it must be this nation and its people who
stand first and foremost. The question becomes whether we stand
strong, able to shape ourselves into our best future or will we stand
frail and trembling, burdened by the abject failure to surmount the
multiple problems confronting us.

It against this backdrop that I assess any action I take. Here I come
to my name being placed in consideration as the Vice Presidential
candidate for our party, the APC. I have labored hard to move this
party from being merely an idea in the minds of a few into being a
political organization that might win this election and govern the
nation in way that gives the people the hope and opportunity they
seek. Nothing is more important to me than to realize this dream not
for myself but for the people of this land I so love.

I helped to build this party, giving no thought to seeking an elected
office because of it. My contribution to the party was never based on
the expectation of a later political handout. Nigeria is in trouble
and we are well past the moment for such narrow, selfish games.

There came a time during the course of the events when our
Presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari offered the Vice
Presidential slot to me. Being a normal human being, I was deeply
moved and honored that he would consider me for the position. Being a
patriot, I had to weigh my potential candidacy in all of its
dimensions.

I have concluded that the interest of the party, our campaign and of
the nation are better served if I retain my position as the National
leader of the APC, allowing me to be a bridge builder across all
divides. Although, I declined the position, I want to thank General
Buhari for extending the honor to me. Despite all the noise and
opposition around my possible selection, he stood firm and steadfast.
He showed the traits of a leader in holding to a decision he believed
was right despite the errant plots against it.

When my name was raised, the political hatchet men tried to chop it
down with rumor and lies. Over the years, I have developed a thick
skin. The personal attacks did not bother me. I am used to them. While
I have a thick skin, I don’t have a thick mind. There has been one
form of attack that has troubled me. That is the attack based on
religion. The PDP and others have stoked fear of a Muslim- Muslim
ticket.

I have removed myself from consideration so what I now say cannot be
seen as self-serving. I plead with the people of this nation to never
allow the power lust of cynical politicians to set brother against
brother, neighbor against neighbor. If you look at those politicians
who raise this issue the most, they are the least devout and faithful
to any religion other their self-interests.

Nigeria has too many secular problems – insecurity, economic
collapse, poverty , corruption and misgovernance – to allow inept
people to use religion to keep us from solving these challenges for
the benefit of all.

Those who exploit religion should be wary. For there really is a God
and he does not like it when you play with his people or use His name
to do the opposite of what He intends.

I ask the people to remove religion from the electoral equation now
that the tickets of both parties are mixed. I ask you to select the
ticket best able to end the downward slide that Nigeria has endured
since this government took over. I ask you to remember that too many
Christians and Muslims are poor. Most of all, I ask you to remember
that the true religion of the PDP is poverty, APC come to bring
prosperity to the people. Please vote for that.

The Nigeria I see is a nation that shall overcome. The Nigeria I see
is a nation ready to sweep aside the broken ways of our recent past
and the government and politicians who impose distress upon us. The
Nigeria I see and seek is one where each person, every man, woman and
child may live free of terrorism, free of the despair of poverty and
free of the fear that the government meant to serve and protect them
has turned its back to them in cold and utter indifference.

I see and seek a Nigeria where progressive democratic governance
creates the political and economic space needed for each of us to
contribute to rescuing and retooling this nation. And, in the process
of this benign endeavor, may each and every one of us share in the
sound promise and good prosperity that shall describe the architecture
of our national revival.

However, not everyone that shouts the name of Nigeria believes in this
vision. There are many who would have you laid low and our future
tossed asunder that they may persist in reaping the unjust reward of
their selfish ways. There are wolves in sheep clothing and even
jackals in wolf’s clothing. I have seen them but not as residents in
some strange zoo. They populate the halls of this diminished
government and the party from which this government was born.

We have come to the field of fateful choice. We have been brought to
test the scales of weighty decision. Shall we lift this nation upward
so that from its higher vantage point we may clearly see the road to
our better destiny? Or shall we continue to march the march of fools
into the dark of darkness. The current path has but one end. It shall
take us into the den of national collapse. We have gone far enough
down this wicked avenue to be aware of what its continuance portends.

We must awaken of our own accord, my dear people, before the bell of
doom rings upon us. If we wait until that moment, we would have waited
too long. Our future, our fate, our destiny would have been cast into
the snare of utter misfortune. This is not the song of greatness. It
is the poetics of ruin.

For me, political ambition will never triumph over patriotic
conviction. This delicate moment affords no space for emotion to
intrude to blind us from what is best. The APC is the best and only
vehicle to enact the progressive and broad change this nation cries
for. I eagerly lend myself to this fine cause without me having to be
on the ticket.

This is a time for cohesion and an overriding sense of mission. We
must defeat the foe before us and resist all temptations intended to
entice us to fight among ourselves.

I sincerely commit myself to the rescue agenda of General Buhari and
Professor Osinbajo.

I declare to you, I will work and dedicate myself so that our ticket
succeeds and wins the 2015 election -- not for his good, not for my
good, not even for the party’s good but for the good of the nation we
inhabit.

Some may call what I have done a sacrifice. I call it otherwise. It is
my patriotic contribution and duty. I do so with a happy and uplifted
heart and clear conscience because I have committed myself to seeking
the best for this nation before seeking what is good for myself. This
is the creed of statesmanship I chose to follow. May this be the creed
of our party as General Buhari leads us to historic victory in the
2015 elections.

May the light of a bright future always shine on you and on our
beloved nation, the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

-Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu

    1. Beautiful speech, very poetic.
Stella as a leader of APC he is asking Nigerians to vote for their candidate come 2015 as they mean well for Nigeria and Nigerians, as seen in his patriotic gesture of declining the nomination of the VP, so that the fears of Muslim-Muslim ticket will be allayed and the party will have a more balanced front.
Gradually we're edging into a two party state, which is good in my opinion. I love strong oppositions, it makes the other stand on their feet.

  9. Abeg leave story! If you really wanted to serve the nation and not your selfish myopic end then you would have selected either Oshiomhole or Amaechi. You are very deceitful and narcisstic. It is obvious you really believe Nigerians would vote for you as Governor again let alone VP. You are dreadfully mistaken.

Now that you have made a very wrong move, one that I believe will cost the APC the next election, please tell us how you plan to garner the support and much needed votes of the South-South and South-East? You ought to have leveraged on the inroads APC made last week when Buhari emerged as your Presidential candidate. At the very least in the forthcoming election you need to split GEJ's votes and only a candidate from his region would be able to do that. What is Prof Osibajo going to gain the APC? You just threw away a fabulous opportunity because of your selfish interest of always wanting to control. I was so looking forward to voting in APC nationally, but now you have ruined our chance. All those congratulating you do not understand what is at stake here. I am Yoruba and proudly so, but what you have done here is to render the inroads made in recent times by the APC dead on arrival. I hope you can live with yourself after committing such a grave error. Your arrogance once again will cost Nigeria dearly and the weaklings in your party that could not stand up to you for once and tell you the God's honest truth. I still hope APC wins the Presidency and if they do will openly apologise to you, however, I am sure I am not wrong that you have blown our chances and there will be wild jubilations and celebrations in PDP and GEJ's camp because you just gave the election to them on a diamond encrusted platter of gold. Hope you are proud of yourself sir!

    2. Wao wao wao. Interesting analysis. So please tell me Ola,whom would u rather they picked as the VP with Buhari, considering that the Muslim Muslim ticket was a no no?

Let's narrow it down. Would Amechi have been a better candidate to run as VP? If so why? I ask honestly and I hope u respond cause I love your analytical mind.

I think if given the chance, Amechi would become uncontrollable and a stress mate for Buhari. I may be wrong.

And of course Fashola apart from being Muslim, stepped out of the race on the basis that he's politically tired and needed time for his personal life and family.

As for Oshiomole, well, candidly speaking I'm not sure that I can trust him that much. Perhaps I would have opt for him some 6years ago but not after he became governor. He changed from being the voice of the masses to a self serving politician. My opinion.

Fayemi of course is not worth being considered for obvious reasons.

Oyinlola? Well, being an ex military man who is cordial with GMB in terms of their military background etc, for me would have been better than Osibajo. Osibajo can be likened to Jonathan. In that both have/had a history of merely being civil servants, albeit passive, not politically savvy or rugged, are more of administrators than politicians, but were picked by their superiors because they can be easily manipulated. Which is the end result of what we get from GEJ today. Push push push!!

I also gathered that OBJ sent a word that Oyinlola be considered for the post.

Note the trend with our politicians, and this is with all political parties. The godfathers pick candidates who are passive, never the ones that know what is right and will challenge their authorities. Same happened with when Fashola who was chief of staff during tinubu's, was elected governor but would later disappoint his oga, which came out to favour Lagosians, but caused a strife btw the duo.

Quite honestly the capacity of the VP has become a ceremonious title with little or no impact and relevance. This has been the case since Jonathan was VP to y'aradua.. unlike Atiku with OBJ. GEJ as VP was none existent until the man passed. And see Sambo again, I don't even know what his voice sounds like because we hardly hear him speak. I sometimes forget that the man exists. Very dormant and excessively passive man. So I don't see much coming up from Osibajo not unless things are done as they ought to.

Finally Tinubu cannot deny his ambition to become VP because he had been nurturing it for so many years. Thank God he took the advice and "rejected" the offer. It would have been a colossal blunder.

His autocratic way of governance is what I am afraid would eventually sink the APC ship if care isn't taken. This election is going to be tough and I can't wait. God preserve us all.

PDP would have found some dirt to discredit Amaechi or Oshiomole should they have been picked. Try finding dirt on this man.... you'll be going on a wild goose chase. Except they want to lie against him; for which God will level them patapata.

    1. Stella don't mind this cunny fellow, it's all a game of interest. This man will sell Buhari out at the dying minute like he did to Ribadu. Imagine Buhari chose tinubu as his successor not Fashola or anybody else but Tinubu, that's the person that wants to bring about change. Many APC members opposed to it so instead of accepting the offer he stepped down and offered his stooge Prof Yomi. Muslim/Christian ticket or Fulani/Yoruba ticket. Nigeria is theirs alone to rule abi? Let me just say it here, Jonathan will win with a landslide victory..the south/East/northcentral belongs to GEJ. Tinubu will sell APC out at the dying minute, all it takes is a juicy contract or oil block. What they are all playing is politics of personal interest. Change ni Chan kor. The Yorubas and their lords the Hausa/Fulani will always be at one end. Tinubu wants to turn Nigeria to his family business like he did in Lagos, he knows Amaechi, Fashola and Oshiomole will be difficult to control hence Prof......PH GAL

      Delete
    2. Hmmm PH babe. Na wa o lol. Na true u talk though. If what I heard is anything to go by, since nothing is confirmed these days. I gathered that GEJ pointed out matter of factly, in house of course, that tinubu had been "paid" to deliver the yoruba people's votes as his side of the quota. Mind u this was implied during the last elections too, that tinubu and GEJ conceded and had an understanding. But what I query, as it is conflicting, is that, how can tinubu "sell out" to the pdp when he can benefit more if his party wins the federal election? How much could they possibly pay him to suffice? With the oil wells they say he was given? I don tire. We shall see

      Delete
    3. Don't mind the yeye old man. They tried selling a dummy to us by spreading the muslim/muslim ticket because he was eyeing the VP position. The thing no fly because he knows if he present himself as a presidential candidate nobody will vote for him, he is just trying to stay politically relevant. APC Lagos state governorship aspirant is just a stooge so he can continue to run the affairs of Lagos state.

Tinubu should take a chill pill, we win some, we lose some. Amaechi had better watch his back, coz the EFCC might be coming after him real soon to account for the rivers money he pumped into APC in order to acquire vice presidency position/running mate of Buhari.

  53. Ok Aunty Stella, the reasons he released this statement are as follows: To tell us that he was chosen as a running mate for GMB but declined it. To let us know that it pained his mind when people speculated that APC is going for a muslim muslim ticket. To make us understand that religion has nothing to do with what APC aims to achieve if they should win the presidential race. To tell us that the present administration has nothing to offer Nigerians. To tell us that PDP is bad APC is good. He also insinuated that some people are actually asking him why he did not take up the offer of a running mate to GMB. To tell us that by not taking up the office, he rendered a selfless service. Finally, to tell us to vote for APC in order for GMB's rescue agenda to become a reality. With these viev explanations of mine, I hope you now understand why he released the statement. Oriegwu!!!

If a candidate is qualified enough to "rescue" the country from its current situation regardless of religion, such person or persons should be considered because insecurity and poverty cuts across religious lines. And also although he was considered by Buhari to be his running mate he declined because he feels he can better serve Nigeria being in the leadership of APC.

  70. This is really a dying generation! Choi!! I cant even deal. Most of you bvs can`t even take the time out to read. You can`t even analyse issues. This is such an intellectually lazy and selfish generation. Nobody is talking about how deep we`ve sunk as a nation and we desperately need to get out! We are here discussing useless politics! The future of this country is bigger than any single individual or any single party. Our nation is in trouble and God has presented us with a golden opportunity to vote out this corrupt and grossly incompetent regime. Maybe we are going to sit down and wait for God to come and vote for us. I`m sure we wouldn`t be ranting on this thread if we had a kidnapped daughter held up in the den of boko haram. Get serious people! If we should blow this chance we would not get it again in the next 50 years!!!

  71. Stella you amaze me sometimes. You haven`t even tried to understand the statement and you are looking for the reason behind it or you are just trying to court controversy.. Reason? It has become necessary to clear the air after the furore over the choice of a vice presidential candidate.. Period! Haba.. Great uniben student!

  72. As a counsel opportune to work with pro.osibajo at the ministry of justice. I make bold to say pro osibajo is an incorruptible human being and an epitome of financial discipline both in open and secret.

  75. It's so sad that people can't even understand the power of information and even someone like Stella claiming or rather saying she has no idea of what the write-up is about. Some are even intimidated by the length of the write-up. It shows how shallow and lazy a lot of Nigerians are and we really deserve some of this lazy, dull, clueless , Nollywood watching leaders we have. He is simply clearing the air on the issue so that some dumb arse Okupe wouldn't come out with a twisted version. Two, to clear the air on the issue of putting Nigerians, brothers and groups against each other using religion. What the hell do politicians mean by a Muslim, Muslim or Christian Muslim ticket .... what about the tradition religions afterall the are also Nigerians. And yet they ask for votes from even the devil just to retain their office. Abeg, lets face the issue at hand and ask ourselves the basic questions. Is PDP headed by Jonathan solving or adding value to this great Nation? Is he fit to rule us for another term? I feel a president that fails to understand that 19 is more than 16 cannot understand why he is even president. Simple maths and simple truth is a perfect reason why we are where we are today. 215 girls missing and it took a sitting government a month to confirm it, Not even sure what his military is lacking to fight boko haram.... No weapons, expecting America to come to our rescue. Can't even buy arms as a nation and yet a tout can acquire seven war ships for his leisure ride....... So has Jonathan done well?
