Woman Arrested For Alleged Child Abuse...

A mother in Murrieta was arrested Wednesday after her 3-year-old twin sons were hospitalized for malnutrition and neglect.

Police arrested Courtney Lynn Stewart, 24, and charged her with willful harm to a child and corporal punishment or injury to a child.

According to police, one of Stewart's 3-year-old sons was hospitalized in critical
condition at Rancho Springs Hospital Nov. 7. Hospital staff found the child to be severely malnourished, weighing less than 15 pounds. He also had what they determined to be suspicious bruises. Staffed called police to the hospital before the boy was taken to Rady Children's Center in San Diego. He remained hospitalized in the ICU Wednesday.

Police launched an investigation at the child's home later that day. They found the child's twin brother also appearing to suffer from malnutrition. He was taken to the hospital for an examination, where staff determined he had a fractured jaw, and severe case of nutritional and medical neglect.

Stewart is being held at the Southwest Detection Center.culled

Na wah.this child abuse thing is really confusing and varies.especially if you live in the diaspora...where does discipline end and where does child abuse begin?

  3. Malnutrition isn't discipline.
With the current wave of news cropping up here and there from obodo oyibo and here regarding how people kill, maltreat their kids, am beginning to think there is something they breath in the air or eat from their food or drink from their water that makes their brain alter and go gaga. The other day I read how parents beat their own baby to death. They beat the child so much his intestine ruptured.
I just don't get it anymore.

  5. Well discipline doesn't mean deprivation, parents need to learn to discipline in love and not out of anger. Why deprive a 3year old food?A 3year old would always behave like one,it takes patience, love and maturity on the parents part, and these are your kids not someone else's,abi dem force you to born?reminds me of the maid that was sentenced somewhere in Africa.#SayNoToChildAbuse

  13. i know the laws abroad can be quite crazy when it comes to child abuse but this particular case is a clear cut example of child abuse. A 3 year old weighing less than 15 lbs along with fractured jaws and all. Even if you were to discipline your child, would you do that to the extent of starving and breaking his or her jaws? I think not...at least if you're still sane that is.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Lol@the nigerian way....

If all those laws work here, majority of our parent would know wsp but a typical child is prone to beating but abuse no no...When you abuse a child too much, hanhan datz wickedness na or how do you sleep@night?

    10. *sigh* here we go again...
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Its really funny how we make a fuss out of very trivial issues.
Everybody can't like you, the fact remains that we now live in a world where it's "legal" to kiss ass and a crime to be real. Some days I like Stella's comments/posts and some days I just waka pass. That doesn't make me an enemy. I'm a strong believer of airing your views without insults. I have this close friend who I confide in but the closeness doesn't mean that we don't have heated arguments. In fact if you want to see a real "fight" just ask us about our political views. But after everything, friendship continues.
This is just a blog and even if you have a blog ID, you are still anonymous except in cases where you use your real name and photo.
It won't be surprising (to me) to find out that all the people that shower accolades on you in the open are the same ones that murder you in secret.
The same person that you insult for airing his/her views might just be the neighbour that gave you your only meal yesterday or someone you helped... might even be your mum ( my mum is 62 but she's tech savvy)
We have so many brave people here but in reality, they are cowards.
There's so much energy flying around on this blog and I wonder why Nigeria is still the way it is. This is the kind of energy we need to stop police officers that harass innocent citizens but when that time comes, the heavyweight champions we have here will automatically turn to featherweights....

  20. There is discipline and there is child abuse
Some parents don't discipline but abuse children. Beating them its okay. But doing it to the extreme, putting pepper in their eyes, scratching and biting them is all child abuse. Looking them in a dark room without food for long is abuse. Beating them till they have bruises all over and broken bones is abuse. Malnutrition is abuse.

  21. A fractured jaw is not discipline but abuse. The woman needs to be jailed. We grew up in the U.S and were still disciplined the Nigerian way sometimes but not in an abusive way. If you did something that required flogging, my mom will tell you that she is going to flog you and that you can go ahead and report her afterwards but you better be ready to live in a foster home afterwards...LMAO...we all know the type of abuse some of these kids in foster homes go through. We are all grown now and we sometimes joke about that period of our life.

  26. Pardon me, Stella.

What's discipline got to do with malnutrition and neglect ?
She left her boys hungry and uncared for.

Spanking a child is good but it shouldn't be done in excess, one needs to know when to draw the line.

I read somewhere that over flogging a ward/child actually reduces such child's IQ.

While growing up, I was spanked once or twice but it was the endless talk (sitting me down and admonishing me) by mom that worked more (or so I thought).

Because, I recollect after such talks with my mother, I would really hate myself for being naughty. (My mama sabi insult you so tey, outsiders go think say she beat you, when they see you weeping profusely).

Though, some people say such talks battered their self esteem, but for me I think it did me more good than harm.

A little spanking, here and then hurts no one,

    So, it's your pick.
