President Jonathan And Other ECOWAS Leaders Head To OUAGADOUGOU For Crisis Talks

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT JONATHAN, OTHER ECOWAS LEADERS HEAD TO OUAGADOUGOU FOR CRISIS TALKS

President Goodluck Jonathan will travel to Ouagadougou tomorrow as a member of the three-man delegation of Heads of State and Government raised by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to facilitate the rapid resolution of the current political crisis in Burkina Faso.

Other members of the delegation of ECOWAS leaders are President Macky Sall
of Senegal and President John Mahama of Ghana who is the current Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.

During their one-day visit to Ouagadougou, President Jonathan and his Ghanaian and Senegalese counterparts are expected to meet with Burkina Faso’s interim Head of State, Lt.-Col. Isaac Zida, opposition leaders, members of civil society and other political stakeholders in the country.

Recent political turmoil in Burkina Faso led to the resignation of former President Blaise Compaore and the assumption of power by Lt.-Col. Zida
The African Union’s democratic charter requires its 54 member-states to act against the forceful overthrow of elected governments on the continent.

The Union has given the Burkina Faso military an ultimatum to transfer power back to a civilian administration within two weeks or face sanctions.
President Jonathan will be accompanied to Ouagadougou by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Nurudeen Mohammed and some of his principal aides and advisers.

  7. Good morning SDKERS . Africa spring on sit tight Presidents . May God help Burkina Faso to have a very smooth transition of power to democratically elected Government without any more blood shed Amen. POWER TRULY BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE AFTER ALL!!! This should serve as a lesson to our leaders that they shouldn't push the masses to their breaking point coz they will surely resist it. President Campoare would still have being the president till next year and hand over to another person thereby leaving the office honorably and ceremoniously but power grab has denied him that.

  10. I don't understand how someone will be helping another person put off his chair that caught fire when his own roof is on Fire. Good Morning BVs

  11. Yes. He needs to go to Burkina Faso and fix their problems. Seeing as his own country has none. Afterall, BH taking over 5% of his country (a land mass the size of Wales) isn't an issuue. Ride on, GEj

  14. He is not going as Prez GEJ. He is going as an ECOWAS person. Sometimes u don't want to do something but u owe the organization that is sending u an obligation,so that when you need them they will come

  18. Jona is hot footing it to Burkina faso so that he will answer elder states man okwa ya? Yet his own house is on FIRE! Boko haram is daily sacking people from their villages & rendering them homeless; taking hostages left, right & center & gradually moving towards the west; Army generals are busy promoting a non existent cease fire & what is our Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces doing?
Does a man chase rats when his house is on fire? What crime did we citizens commit cos we deserve better than this.
He is busy fulfulling his calling as an Ecowas rep; what about him fulfilling his obligation to protect the citizens from real/ perceived threat from outside/ within?
