The Rivers State sponsored students currently studying in the United Kingdom have cried out to the state government over their unpaid monthly upkeep allowances.
The students, who are among thousands of students sent by the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA) to study in various universities around the globe, said over five months, life had become unbearable for them as they had not received their allowance.
The embattled students called on governor Rotimi Amaechi to come to their aid before something else happened.
In an SOS sent to the governor, a copy which was obtained by DailyPost, the stranded students said they were now living from hand to mouth.
The letter reads in part,
“SOS CALL: OUR WELFARE AND THE FATE OF OUR UNREMITTED 4 MONTHS UPKEEP AND ACCOMMODATION ALLOWANCES
Dear Sirs,
It is of utmost necessity that I express our unreserved concern over the non-payments of monthly upkeep and accommodation allowances to students sent on scholarship by the Rivers state government of Nigeria through the Rivers State Sustainable Development Agency (RSSDA) to study in various universities around the globe, especially to those of us currently studying in the United Kingdom.
It has been five (5) months since we last received our allowances.
The last time we received bank alert was June 2014 which was eventually paid in September 2014, and ever since then (July – November), students have been living under hardship with little or no support from our poor parents back home who are now passing through the hurdles of sending money to us abroad when the reverse is supposed to be the case.
All calls to the office have proved abortive as they keep making promises, hence the need for the peoples’ voice as our last resort.
In consequence to our unremitted funds, students have been stranded, disorganised and some are evicted from their flat (s) because they are unable to honour the contract signed with their respective landlords and if not for the help of other students (who also are at risk of been evicted from their homes if their rents are not paid in anytime soon) they would have been homeless and forced to live in refugee camps.
I am writing this open letter to all those that matter in government to please come to our aid especially now that the 2015 general election is fast approaching and the probability of us been paid is less than zero.
With a heavy heart”.
*tongue in cheek*
I am sure the governor will respond ASAP to this....if he doesnt, then they should bring back those students home!
The celebrity Governor Amaechi!
ReplyDeleteAlways in the news.
As in ehn. And he makes comic of everything. He makes me laugh though. Quite honestly I haven't formed any opinion of the man, good or bad he's just there. But they should pay these students ooo...it's not funny being broke and going to school in any country at that. please don't let them deport them o, it will be a shame.
DeleteI thought they have settled this issue
ReplyDeleteSettle fire.
DeleteTeachers are owed over 6months salaries.
State civil servants are owed 3months and 4 months over head
State Foot ball teams are owed two months
Students on scholarship owed 5 months
Corpers haven't been paid since 2012
Yet he went ahead to spend 5 billion for that nonsense, no brainer APC rally. Amaechi is of all men/ governors most miserable. #ilovepipilee

DeleteAm amazed at your stupidity....as for Jayem she is a certified Olodo whose only speciality is sleeping with her Italian old man......has it occurred to you idiots that these students would never have come to study abroad if not for the scholarship? So if u give them and u promise to look after them you should fulfill it....stupid talk like this is why our society is not making progress, when ther is a contract you are bound to fulfill it.....yours so far is the most stupid comment

Its thoughtful of Gov Amechi to embark on such a project of sponsoring youths of his state to acquire education abroad. Though the blame is expected to go to him,at thesame time lets no be too quick to judge him coz the delay in disbursement of their money might be ministry of education things. Love me some Gov Amechi!!!.
ReplyDeleteAmechi the controversial governor
ReplyDeleteStrange that they received a BANK ALERT in June 2014, which was eventually paid in September 2014!!!
