Good Morning - Things You Need To Know This Saturday


. Members of the islamist Boko Haram sect have recaptured Chibok from the Nigerian troop. Chibok is the home town of over 200 schoolgirls abducted by the insurgents in April. Report says the insurgents attacked and seized the town on Thursday evening.






- Defence Headquarters yesterday confirmed the death of three crew members in the military helicopter which crashed on Thursday night in Adamawa state. Report says the Air Force fighter helicopter that was deployed for military action against the Boko Haram crashed near Yola, the state capital.


- Bomb ripped through Kano on Friday evening, killing six people and injuring many others when residents were returning home after the close of work. Report says the blast occurred along the Maiduguri Road, opposite an NNPC filling station in the Hotoro area of the city.

- The Arewa Consultative Forum, has asked the Federal Government to declare a total war on the violent Boko Haram sect. The ACF has suggested that the Federal Government recalls trained and retired members of the armed forces and other security agencies to execute the war against the insurgents.


-Report says former Vice-president, and a presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and a national leader of the APC, former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu, held separate meetings with a former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on Friday. 2015 election was reportedly the agenda of the meetings.


- Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, on Friday, declared his acceptance of the All Progressives Congress presidential nomination form obtained for him by some members of the House. The forms were presented to him by 5.09pm at his residence in Maitama, Abuja.

-Son of the late Prime Minister, Dr. Abdul-Jhalil Tafawa-Balewa, has said he will still challenge President Goodluck Jonathan for the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party despite the assertion by Chief Edwin Clark that he had stepped down for the incumbent President. He made the disclosure while speaking with journalists in Abuja on Friday. He was returning his presidential nomination and expression of interest forms to the office of the National Organising Secretary of the party, Alhaji Abubakar Mustapha.


-. Vice President, Namadi Sambo was with the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party on Friday to submit President Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential nomination and expression of interest forms.


-. Report says the visit of the First Lady, Patience Jonathan to Bayelsa state to distribute items to the people of the state at the Samson Siasia Stadium turned sour as a kid reportedly lost his life, while another got injured in a resulting stampede.


-. The National Chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, yesterday said that two of the Commission’s Ad hoc staff were arrested for carrying out a house-to-house registration of voters in Kano State. Report says the arrest was made possible through the operatives of the Department of State Service, DSS, and the Police in Kano city.


- Former Vice-President and presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Party (APC), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, yesterday lamented the defection of former Ogun State governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba from APC to Social Democratic Party, PDP.He described the development as “regrettable and unfortunate”.Atiku, however, expressed confidence that reconciliation between Osoba and Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State was still possible.


- Journalists on their way to cover the presentation and acceptance of the presidential expression of interest and nomination form of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, narrowly escaped being shot as they were attacked by the security details attached to the Vice-President, Namadi Sambo yesterday.
The Nation reports that a convoy of the reporters was attacked at Aso Drive junction (close to the Three Arm Zone) as the Vice President, who was on his way back from Jumat prayer at the National Mosque, passed the junction.
A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Buba. K, triggered the attack when he ordered the arrest of Mr. Emman Ovuakporie, who is a Senior Correspondent with the Vanguard newspapers, claiming that the reporter beat a security cordon mounted by the security details of the Vice President.

Buba could not be convinced that one of the mobile policemen attached to the VP’s security convoy passed the journalist’s car.Other journalists passing packed their cars and protested the undignified manner in which the policemen were manhandling the reporters, which caused a sizable gathering.The Vice President’s security details were further annoyed on learning that the reporters were on official assignment to cover the presentation and acceptance of the presidential nomination form by the Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal.
A mobile policeman, Corporal Ayubu Ayefu threatened to shoot a cameraman with Africa Independent Television (AIT), Femi Akinpelu, in an attempt to disperse the protesting journalists.




- Some prominent Nigerians including Chief Ayo Adebanjo and Malam Nasir El-Rufai on Friday urged renowned cleric, Pastor Tunde Bakare, to return to active politics.The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bakare bowed out of active politics after his election bid as a running mate to the Presidential Candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), in 2011.Speaking at the launch of Bakare’s biography in Lagos, Adebanjo, also a lawyer, said that Bakare would be doing disservice to Nigeria if he refused to go back to politics.

Goes to show Shekau and his cohort are triple daring Jonathan even as they are yet to resolve the former issue. Such impunity should trigger any individual to a gangster 'retreat', not to mention a government full of active Armies. Mr President, C in C, this is your call. We are waiting
